Podcast playlists are a powerful way for you to get your show discovered by new podcast listeners and subscribers. In this article, we’ll break down how you can take advantage of them on Spotify.

What Are Podcast Playlists?

Podcast playlists are collections of podcast episodes organized by topic, theme, individual preference or Spotify suggestions.

How Podcast Playlists Can Increase Your Listenership

At Spotify, playlists have helped music creators reach more listeners and find new fans. Artists like Starley Hope, YONAKA and Tones and I have found listeners around the world thanks to the global reach of Spotify’s playlists.

Podcast playlists can potentially do the same thing for podcast creators. As Diaz-Hurtado puts it, “On Spotify, sometimes fans go straight to the latest episodes of their favorite shows they’re following. But other times, they’re in the mood to discover something new, and that’s where podcast playlists come in.”

Types of Podcast Playlists on Spotify

Spotify has three types of playlists: editorial, personalized and user-created.

1. Editorial Playlists

Editorial playlists are curated by Spotify’s editorial team. “(Spotify’s editors) are searching for the best, most engaging shows and episodes and are giving them a powerful platform for discovery,” says Diaz-Hurtado.

Podcast episodes in editorial playlists are seen by Spotify’s users in the order in which they’re chosen by Spotify editors. Different countries have different editorial playlists specific to their region and market, and there are also a few editorial playlists Spotify listeners around the world have access to: Best Podcasts of the Week, Brain Snacks and Crime Scene.

2. Personalized Playlists

Personalized playlists are collections of recommended podcast episodes for Spotify’s users. They’re different from editorial and user-created playlists because each user’s personalized playlist is unique to their interests and past listening history. For example, Daily Podcasts curates a playlist of podcast episodes from shows you follow and individual episodes from new shows you might like.

“As your show gets more streams on Spotify, our recommendations get stronger and stronger about new listeners who might enjoy your podcast,” says Diaz-Hurtado.

Other types of personalized playlists provide collections of podcast episodes, news clips and music based on your listening history. Daily Drive offers a daily collection of songs and news briefings and Daily Wellness offers a daily collection of wellness-related music and podcast episodes. When your show gets added to these mixed media playlists, your listenership has the potential to grow even more.

3. User-Created Playlists

User-created playlists are a great tool for connecting with your audience, of both long-time listeners and brand-new fans.

Anyone— listeners or creators—can also make their own playlists. You can create playlists to organize your past episodes around a certain theme or topic. For example, Hannah Hethmon, host of “Museums in Strange Places,” created a playlist of all her favorite podcast episodes about museums—some of which were her own.

You can also use playlists to curate music that might pair well with your show. The producers of “Dissect” create companion music playlists for each season of their show.

“These aren’t the only ways to engage with your audience,” says Diaz-Hurtado. “You can get creative and let your imagination run wild with it.”

How to Create a Podcast Playlist on Spotify

To create a playlist on the Spotify desktop app or web player, click *Create Playlist* in the left-hand menu.

To create a playlist on the Spotify mobile app:
  1. Go to Your Library.
  2. Tap the + button at the top right of the screen to create your playlist.

You can also create a playlist, or add podcast episodes to an existing playlist, on the Spotify mobile app:

  1. Navigate to a show or episode you love.
  2. Tap the three dots next to the track or episode.
  3. Tap “Add to playlist.”
  4. Select an existing playlist you’d like to add it to.
  5. Or, tap to create a new playlist from scratch!

How to Know If You’ve Been Added to a Spotify Podcast Playlist

Your Spotify for Podcasters Dashboard is where you’ll be notified if you’ve been added to a podcast playlist on Spotify.
  1. Log in to your Spotify for Podcasters account.
  2. If you’ve been added to an editorial playlist, you’ll see a notification in your dashboard.
  3. If you have multiple shows or manage a podcast network, we’ll aggregate information about all your shows in one place.

What to Do When You’ve Been Added to a Spotify Podcast Playlist

Getting added to a podcast playlist is an opportunity to celebrate and share the news with your audience.
  1. Create a social-friendly promo cards for your show using our Promo Cards tool.
  2. Share the news across marketing channels like your website, newsletter, and social media accounts.

Grow Your Audience with Podcast Playlists on Spotify

Playlists are an excellent way for new listeners to find your show and potentially become long-term fans. Whether they come across your show on an editorial or personalized playlist, or through a playlist of your own, listeners have a chance to get an immediate sense of what your show is about.

“That’s what playlists are all about,” says Diaz-Hurtado. “Connecting with your audience and finding new ways to grow your show.”
