I finally stepped out of Brendo’s shadow and did one of these interview thingies by myself. Turns out the tech side is way easier than he makes it sound!

The problem though, is that Gary (Gaz) and I can talk the corn! I think it was 3 hours 53 minutes to be precise, but don’t worry we only recorded an hour or so.

Gaz is as bullish on Bitcoin as the rest of us, but his knowledge and life experience also gives him a perspective on risk that many of those that have recently been rekt by leverage could learn from.  You don’t need to risk the farm; you just need to get off zero.

It’s easy to talk a big game.  Backing it up is harder.  However, what we’ve found over the last 7 years, is that the closer you align yourself with Bitcoin, the better things turn out.

We live in the sticks.  We’re happy living in the sticks.  You couldn’t pay us enough (even sats!) to live in the city.  The problem with living in the sticks, however, is that you may be the only bitcoiner.

It was just as expected.  A few words that spring to mind:

Welcoming.  Old friends.  New friends.  Honest (sometimes brutally).  Intellectually Stimulating.  Steak.  Beers.  Art.  Proof of Work.  Growing.  Committed.  Humble.  Curious.  Family.  Fun.

That was our third and certainly not our last.  We’d love to make it to QLD, VIC and WA to attend theirs someday.  Let’s see.

Bitcoin is a game of patience.  Daniel has been here a while and has shown more patience than most.

It’s great having new guests on to tell us how they found their way to Bitcoin or explaining what they are doing in the Bitcoin ecosystem, but it’s also interesting to follow a story and see the progress over time.

Owen is an example of the latter.  We first met at the OG Bitcoin Bush Bash in Murrurundi in 2020, then we travelled to his farm in northern NSW to check out his beef operation (EP22).  We spoke again as he went over to El Salvador on a scouting mission to see if it really was somewhere he thought he could live (EP43) and now we catch up with him as he’s finding his feet in San Salvador.  He’s not a talker...he’s a doer!  He’s also a good talker...we discuss:

There are bitcoiners who are made, and there are bitcoiners who are born.  The former are to be respected.  They have a different perspective on life, but when presented with new information, they change their mind.  Totally logical, but all too rare.  However, the latter have always been bitcoiners.  They’ve had a Bitcoin mindset forever; Bitcoin just didn’t exist.

Michael – @Talej – is definitely in the second group, and his recent article in Bitcoin Magazine proves it.

One of the things I’m enjoying the most about doing the pod, is that we are starting to develop a little community of like-minded, no-nonsense bitcoiners.  So, it’s great to have one of them back for another chat, to see where things have changed since we last spoke, what we got right and what we got wrong.

Scotland has given the world many things, from the TV and telephone to the fridge and the toaster, but none of it is better than Haggis.  So, if you need a good Bitcoin twitter handle, @HaggisHODL is it.

Pod Shout-outs

It really is fun to sit down to record a pod and have no idea what direction it’s going to go.  This week we predominantly discussed library policies. I know, I know that sounds unbelievably depressing, but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised...seriously!

Our guest is @BitcoinSampo, and we’re delighted to go international again.  We want to hear perspectives from all over the world and get out of our own echo chamber.  So, we’re (virtually) off to Finland.

Despite sounding like an assassin, Sampo is a prolific Twitter poster about both Bitcoin and human rights.  An English teacher by profession, he currently operates a small business that offers translating services, most recently in the gaming industry.

He – like many – are class of 2017, but really put in the work in 2018 to “discover the beauty of Bitcoin”, and for the last 3 years has been Bitcoin only.
