The Celluloid Mirror - Coming Soon from 4MileCircus
The Celluloid Mirror is a new podcast from 4MileCircus (4milecircus.com). Join Nicole Solomon and Sean Mannion as each episode they delve into two very different films to see what they reveal about each other and their audiences. Upcoming episodes include pairings of Funny Games (2007) and Transformers: The Movie (1986); Babe (1995) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974); and The Big Boss (1971) and Sorry to Bother You (2018).

Episode 46: Summer Vacation Special 2018
On episode 46 Sean and Nicole focus on 4MileCircus news you can use before going on a summer hiatus. We talk about the world premiere of 4MileCircus’s first feature-length film Meme at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, where it won Outstanding Narrative Feature Film! We also discuss the NYC premiere of our short film Sanctuary at IndieWorks’ annual Pride screening, where it won the Audience Choice award; the upcoming premiere of our surreal short Rubber Ducky; and the status of our next horror short, It’s Normal and what we’ll be working on over our summer podcasting break.
We conclude with the Q&A from Meme’s premiere screening featuring Writer/Director Sean Mannion, Producer Carolyn Maher, DP Peter Westervelt and star Sarah Schoofs discussing what prompted children to yell “fuck your movie”, among other behind-the-scenes gems.
We’ll be back in the fall! Have a great summer and see you then!

Episode 41 - Manny and Lindsay Serrano
Horror filmmakers Lindsay and Manny Serrano of Mass Grave Pictures join us for our 41st trip to the circus and discuss their movies Beneath, Theta States, Blood Slaughter Massacre. Lindsay and Manny also discuss their experiences working with distributors versus self-distribution, share tips on recreating the 1980s as authentically as possible onscreen, and reminisce about the very first horror scene they shot together, including grisly details about how they did the gory DIY effects and why they never worked with some of the cast/crew again. We conclude with a warming round of Uncle Sean’s Snow Trivia.
Be sure to check out Lindsay and Manny’s own podcast, Filmmaking Sucks, which will soon feature Sean and Nicole talking about the ins and outs of social media for filmmakers! For more of Lindsay, listen to episode 38 of this podcast which was recorded live at the Ax Wound Film Festival and features a filmmaker panel of Lindsey, Christina Raia and Monika Estrella Negra.

Episode 40 - The Shotgun Murder Santa Holiday Special
Merry Christmas! We’re allowed to say that again. BOOM. Taste the freedom as we wait for Santa (or is that Shotgun Murder Santa?) to slide down our chimney on Xmas Eve while making merry with some good old-fashioned holiday cheer. Said cheer mostly involves our feelings about The Last Jedi (skip from 8:32 min in to 43:50 to avoid TLJ spoilers!), comparing our best film and TV of the year lists, and discussing which shitty pop star’s fans have been leaving loseriffic (and homophobic!) comments on our YouTube channel (hint: might sound kinda like Roast Pantone). Along the way we pause to share what Nacho Vigando told us his Star Wars movie would be about, debate whether or not green milk can be vegan, and play a peppy and adorable round of Uncle Sean’s Porg trivia (and yes, Nicole is still holding out for Vulptex trivia).

Episode 38 - Ax Wound Ancillary Content Panel
Live from the 3rd annual Ax Wound Festival in Brattleboro, VT, it’s The 4MileCircus! This time we have three guests, all of who screened films at the fest: Monika Estrella Negra (Flesh, Audre’s Revenge), Lindsay Serrano (Beneath, Mass Grave Pictures) and unofficial 3rd co-host of the circus, Christina Raia (Night In and Enough, Congested Cat Productions), all gathered together to talk about “ancillary content” (aka #ExtraFilmicContent aka #SynergyOfExtraFilmicContent™), which is basically any content you may create beyond your central film for creative and/or promotional purposes. Specific topic discussed include getting bts on set, the spoileriffic perils of social media, creating films-within-films, the importance of building community, and how zines are awesome. We also boost Sean’s self-esteem, take questions from the audience, and play a confusing game of vaguely-ax-related trivia.
This episode was recorded live at the Hooker-Dunham Theater in Brattleboro, VT on Saturday, November 25th, 2017 at the 3rd Annual Ax Wound Film Festival. Huge thanks to AWFF founder Hannah Neurotica for letting us do our thing.

Episode 37- Halloween Special 2017
Happy Halloween! On this 37th episode, GoreMileCircus partners Sean and Nicole share films viewers should watch (and avoid) this spooky season. There’s plenty of time for terrifying digressions into why Sean believes LL Cool J’s roles in Halloween H20 and Deep Blue Sea are “the best reflection of life in America,” Nicole’s strong feelings regarding American Horror Story: White Nonsense and the Little Shop of Horrors Director’s Cut, confusion regarding Chastity the vampire comic book vs Chastity the vampire stand up comedian, how to start a Small Talk fight club, how True Detective ruined Sean’s script, our mutual affection for Paz De La Huerta, Nicole’s chastising of Sean for not having seen enough Jim Jarmusch or Phantasm movies [note: since this recording, Sean has seen ALL of the Phantasm movies], debating whether or not Trump is an effective cult leader, why they don’t make body switching comedies much anymore, and the urban legend that ruined Halloween. We conclude with a raucous, impromptu game of Little Shop of Horrors trivia.
For perfect Halloween viewing, may we suggest 4MileCircus’s own Small Talk? 23 minutes of terrifying fun that critics call things like “unique,” "funny," and "one of the best horror films ever made." Decide for yourself on Amazon, Seed&Spark or Vimeo OTT:

Episode 36- Ashlee Blackwell
Ashlee Blackwell is a writer and the creator of the indispensable Graveyard Shift Sisters, a website dedicated to “purging the black female horror fan from the margins.” On episode 36 of The 4MileCircus, Ashlee talk to Nicole and Sean about how the site has evolved over the past five years and the community that has developed around it, using Patreon effectively when it’s hard to ask for money, why she (mostly) likes twitter and thinks Facebook looks like Jack Nicholson’s typewriter in The Shining, the 31 Days of Black women in horror challenge, the joys of both great and terrible horror flicks, meeting Toy Newkirk (ANOES 4) and what makes horror conventions so special. We conclude with (what else?) a thrilling game of “Graveyard Shift Trivia.”

4MinuteCircus: Vampire Movies With Annie Rose Malamet
Welcome to the inaugural episode of The 4MINUTECircus, a bite-sized version of The 4MileCircus podcast. Halloween is coming up, so we had a seasonally-appropriate roundtable discussion with recent guest Annie Rose Malamet about our favorite vampire movies. What could they be? Listen and learn!
Also be sure to listen to episodes 34 and 35 of The (full-length) 4MileCircus in which we talk to Annie about her work as an interdisciplinary multimedia artist and DIY curator.

Episode 35 - Annie Rose Malamet (Part 2)
Interdisciplinary media artist Annie Rose Malamet joins Sean and Nicole for episode 35 and the second half of an in-depth conversation about her work. This time we get into the nitty gritty on how she financially manages being a multimedia artist and DIY curator. Topics include how she incorporated lack of funds into her aesthetic including working with found footage and shooting on her phone, what it takes to put on a gallery show including how to recalibrate after a major sponsor flakes and part of your exhibit is destroyed by a drunk bro, providing financial support for artists and the high cost of applying for such through most institutions, and selling underwear both for art and plain old commerce. And in a a particularly confusing twist, we all enjoy a game of Uncle Sean’s Curing Trivia (it’s kind of related? Maybe?)

Episode 34- Annie Rose Malamet (Part 1)
Annie Rose Malamet is a horror buff, interdisciplinary media artist, and DIY curator based in Brooklyn. On episode 34 of The Circus, she is kind enough to sit down with Sean and Nicole to discuss her work remixing found images and her shows “Fatter IRL” and “W4W”. We also talk a lot about Tatu’s “All The Things She Said” video and its original impact on a 13-year-old Annie, Annie’s love of reality television, how she uses Instagram to help curate exhibitions, and the lack of fat people and diversity in general in so much of the NYC art scene. We conclude with an eye-opening few rounds of Uncle Sean’s NewlyMet Game in which Annie and Nicole answer profoundly unfair questions about one another after having just met.

Episode 33 - Beach Party Summer Special
It’s The 4MileCircus Beach Party Summer Special! Nicole and Sean sit down with themselves to discuss what 4MileCircus has been up to over the last few months and what we have in the works for the rest of the year. They discuss shooting Sean’s upcoming short Rubber Ducky and shooting with Tara Cioletti (of his films Abel and Cain, Time Signature, and Meme) again. They also discuss Nicole co-directing previous guest Jeanette Sears’ short film Sanctuary and raiding Nicole’s grandmother’s house for era-appropriate props. Nicole also confuses chloroform for formaldehyde when discussing the contents of the cough syrup from her grandmother’s house. Nicole’s short horror film Small Talk is also now available streaming on Seed&Spark, which currently offers one month free when you subscribe. The film will also be playing at the PDXtreme festival later this year. As the beach they are on is invaded by hordes from Atlantis Sean and Nicole discuss who should be on their Zombie Apocalypse team (spoiler: not one another) and play a round of Mets trivia and a round of John Heard trivia.

Episode 32 - Jeanette Sears (Part 2)
Pop open a La Croix and tune in to the stunning conclusion of our 2-part interview with cinematographer Jeanette Sears! We discuss crewing on films in various roles, The difference between a tuba and a sousaphone (Jeanette plays both!), being director of cinematography on films like Ryan Kramer’s Arm Bar, Christina Raia’s Night In, and Sean’s own Beneath the Black Moon, editing video for Astrea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, working as a wedding videographer and generally finding film work, and how Jeanette got into filmmaking in the first place. We also discuss our preferred zombie film sub-genres, debate which Nightmare on Elm Street film featured a return Johnny Depp cameo for way too long (it’s #6), and play a rousing game of Uncle Sean’s Geoff Trivia, in honor of Jeanette’s dog.

Episode 31 - Jeanette Sears (Part 1)
Jeanette Sears is a queer cinematographer, director and editor who has made tons of awesome stuff, sometimes even with Sean and Nicole! They’ve shot a number of 4MC productions (Small Talk, Mare, Beneath the Black Moon) and most recently wrote, directed, and starred in the short film Sanctuary (co-directed by Nicole!) which was inspired by Leslie Feinberg’s classic book Stone Butch Blues and is currently in postproduction. We discuss that production as well as their short film Happenstance (co-written with Nicole!) and the pros and cons of various social media platforms for filmmakers. Sean and Nicole try to bully Jeanette into favoring twitter over Facebook through discussion of creepy privacy violations, live tweeting congressional votes, the #MakeMineMilkshake hashtag, and Sean’s incredibly practical film ideas, and we all discuss the viability of a combo road trip/film shoot. We also play a nail biting round of Uncle Sean’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us trivia, competing for a coveted can of cool and refreshing seltzer. Who gets to drink it? Listen and learn!

Episode 30 - Michael Anderson
Michael Robert Anderson is a Staten Island-based actor, writer, director and producer who has made a number of short films with his production company, Purple Cloud Entertainment. On episode 30 of the 4MileCircus, Sean and Nicole talk to Michael about his latest short, the World War II-themed Major Key, which Anderson wrote, directed, produced, and stars in. We discuss how he managed to wear all those hats at the same time, finding his cast (including his co-lead Sabrina Matarazzo, sister of Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo), and why he wanted to make a romance about a US soldier and German musician set in Nazi Germany. We also play an invigorating round of Uncle Sean’s Historical Trivia focused on Julius Caeser (not for any particular reason related to current events. Nope, not at all.)

Episode 29 - Hannah Neurotica (Part 2)
Hannah Neurotica is the mastermind behind Ax Wound zine, Women in Horror Month, the Ax Wound Film Festival and so many more deliciously horrific projects. In the second half of our conversation with her (and our 29th trip to The Circus), we talk to Hannah about writing and directing her own films, online misogyny, the Soska sisters’ blood drive, her own upcoming feminist dystopian horror film, living in dystopia, Facebook-induced panic attacks, making augmented reality sea creature videos, why Snapchat is actually awesome, what Hannah loves about social media marketing, why Hannah thinks paper zines will make a comeback as a safer place to communicate in politically fraught times, safety and Facebook’s “real name” policy, the brand new Women in Horror Month message board, and how everything old is coming back. We also play a nail-biting round of Uncle Sean’s Elias Koteas trivia.

Episode 28 - Hannah Neurotica (Part 1)
From the celebrated and historic Ax Wound zine to Women in Horror Month to the more recent Ax Wound Film Festival, Hannah Neurotica is a key figure in the thriving feminist horror community and a lovely human being whom we have the pleasure of interviewing for our 28th trip to The Circus. Hannah talks with Nicole and Sean about how Ax Wound--the first feminist horror zine--was born out of riot grrrl and punk rock feminism, the oft-hostile world of online horror fandom, life on Livejournal, the importance of zine distros, why she started Women in Horror Month and the crucial role of social media in making it successful, the difference between healthy and unhealthy professional competition among women, how she put together the first Ax Wound Film Festival and what to expect for year three, the Ax Wound VHS Mixtape, and how Nicole and Hannah first (virtually) met! It involves an as-yet unproduced phone sex horror short that is not Small Talk. We also play a terrifying round of Uncle Sean’s Women in Horror Trivia.

Episode 27 - Christina Raia (Part 2)
Filmmaker Christina Raia returns for our one year anniversary episode and the second half of our conversation about her new feature film About A Donkey. More specific discussion topics include the changing landscape of film funding in general and crowdfunding on Seed and Spark in particular, what it’s like when preproduction and crowdfunding campaigns overlap (spoiler:there’s not a lot of sleeping), working with donkeys, how both weddings and babies are like films, taxes taxes taxes, kicking off year five of the IndieWorks screening series, and the utility of writing groups. We also play a rousing round of “Best of the Best Trivia”, discuss recent favorite horror movies including Get Out and The Lure, and propose producing a horror anthology film together!

Late Cambrian’s John Wlaysewski and Olive Hui sit down for the first of a two part conversation about making it work as an indie rock band. From meeting as background actors on Nurse Jackie through snagging reviews for their current LP, Golden Time, Olive and John take us through building and promoting a band. Topics discussed include the pitfalls of finding band members through Craig’s List, releasing music on cassette, getting big in Japan, starting a PR company, and the art of balancing peppy melodies with depressing lyrics.

Episode 23 - Shawn Setaro (Part 2)
Shawn “Other Shawn” Setaro is the host of acclaimed hip hop podcast The Cipher, a prolific journalist for Forbes and Complex among other publications, and a long-time musician. In the conclusion of our two part conversation, Sean and Nicole talk with him about using Patreon: from wtf it even is and how it works to planning patron incentives, effectively promoting the thing, and why Shawn still doesn’t have a video up on his page. We discuss The Cipher’s stance on sponsorship, as well as how being a white guy doing a podcast about a black art form affects his thoughts on monetization. Shawn also talks about what it’s like being a key support person for someone else who is crowdfunding, how he gets work as a music writer, the importance of doing your research, and The Cipher’s newish no-blunt-smoking-on-the-air policy.
Sean “Original Sean” Mannion shares a crowdfunding (and life!) tip about using parties to build and maintain enthusiasm among supporters, and we all play a rousing round of “name that Shawn/Sean."

Episode 22 - Shawn Setaro (Part 1)
Shawn Setaro is the host of the acclaimed hip hop podcast The Cipher as well as a prolific music journalist for Forbes and Complex, an award-winning composer, and seasoned professional bass and guitar player. In Part One of a two part interview, Nicole and Sean talk with “other Shawn” about making the shift from being primarily a musician to music journalist, using social media to build audiences for his writing and podcast (and how that differs from using it as a working musician), finding your social media “voice”, boosting posts effectively on Facebook, hashtagging efficiently on Instagram, coming up with content for posts when you’re out of ideas, getting interview subjects to spread the word, the importance of networking in meatspace, cultivating super fans, and much, much more.
Sean also shares a social media tip about exclusive time bound content such as Snapchat and Instagram Live, and we all discuss our current favorite things including I Am Not Your Negro and James Baldwin’s work in general, New Girl, drinking to forget, and a fabulous New York Times article from back in February about how Trump doesn’t know wtf is going on and his staff literally can’t even find the light switches in the White House.
Next up: We talk more to Shawn about using Patreon and making your work sustainable, financially and otherwise.

Episode 21 - Joselin Linder (Part 2)
Author Joselin Linder's just-released The Family Gene is a memoir about the deadly effects of a unique genetic mutation on her family, as well as their efforts to stop it. In part two of our two part conversation, Sean and Nicole sit down with Linder to discuss her new book and the ins and outs of making a living as a writer, including finding an agent, getting work for hire, using a pseudonym, and winning battles against writer's block.
Sean also shares a crowdfunding tip about making your campaign a team effort, and we conclude with a rousing round of Uncle Sean's Literary Trivia, a highly subjective and deeply unfair game that's almost fun for the whole family.
The Family Gene was just released on Ecco/HarperCollins. Come to the book launch party on Monday, March 20th (that's today!) at 7:30 PM at Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene, Brooklyn!

Episode 20 - Joselin Linder (Part 1)
Joselin Linder is the author of The Family Gene, her memoir about the deadly effects of a unique genetic mutation on her family, as well as their efforts to stop it. In part one of a two part conversation, Joselin, Sean, and Nicole discuss how to effectively build a social media following, the perils of accidental tweet-jacking, the book marketing potential of Instagram, and the pros and cons of Twitter vs Facebook for both personal and professional use.
Sean also shares a social media tip about not talking about your own campaign 24/7 while crowdfunding, and we conclude with a discussion of our current favorite things including the latest Run The Jewels LP, The Alamo Drafthouse and House of Wax Museum and Cocktail Bar, the film version of Fences, Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist, Roller Lash, and Billy on the Street.
The Family Gene comes out March 14 on Ecco/HarperCollins. Come to the book launch party on Monday, March 20th at 7:30 PM at Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene, Brooklyn!
This conversation was recorded in late January, which is why certain references (Viola Davis winning a...Golden Globe?) are so dated.

Episode 15 - 2016 Year-End Special
2016 was a year. Nicole and Sean take the final episode of it to review what has happened generally and what we ourselves have done. We discuss the impact of social media on the election, as well as shooting Mare, The Shondes music videos, starting this podcast, hosting the Social Media & Crowdfunding workshop at the Ax Wound Film Festival, hosting the Friday the 13th Small Talk VOD release party in May, and co-hosting the Artists in Action forum with Congested Cast Productions in December. We also look forward to 2017, home of our upcoming Social Media & Crowdfunding: Strategies and Realities workshop on January 28th, 2017 at 1PM at Videology in Brooklyn. A ticket to that might make for a great gift for anyone still on your list!

In our fourteenth episode, Chris talks to Nicole and Sean about his Greatest Hits Project, which reflects on his storied and celebrated career. Chris also discusses "old school crowdfunding" to make the original music video for Pearl Jam’s "Jeremy", the importance of surrounding yourself with the best people in order to produce the best work, and the peacemaker role he played between Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder. We also weigh in on evolving band line-ups from Van Halen / Van Hagar to the re-united Guns ’n’ Roses. Our social media tip concerns the importance of prioritizing social media platforms rather than spreading yourself too thin. In our twelfth episode, 4MileCircus partners Sean Mannion and Nicole Solomon talk with filmmaker Heidi Moore (Dolly Deadly) at the 2nd Annual Ax Wound Film Festival in Brattleboro, VT. We discuss Heidi’s film Dolly Deadly, her experience crowdfunding for the film, and what it's like spending all day on social media. Nicole shares a post-election social media tip about prioritizing self care. Also, Games! Episode 11 The Halloween Special
In our eleventh episode, 4MileCircus partners Sean Mannion and Nicole Solomon celebrate Halloween by talking about our mutual love of horror movies and our own spooky film projects including Small Talk, Beneath the Black Moon, and the brand new, just-released-on-the-same-day-as-this-episode horror short, Mare.
We also offer a very special social media tip on “Halloween Talk”--or maybe we should call it Halloween “Stalk”?--and discuss what actually scares us in horror movies.
Thanks to special Halloween guest Boney the Skeleton Ghost, everyone who left us reviews on iTunes, and Sean's headache, which rendered him even crankier than usual!

Episode 8 - Louisa Solomon and Eli Oberman of The Shondes (Part 2)
In our eighth episode, 4MileCircus partners Sean Mannion and Nicole Solomon bring you part two of our talk with Louisa Solomon and Elijah Oberman of independent rock band The Shondes. This time we focus on crowdfunding for their tour van and European tour--what worked, what didn't, and lessons learned. How can audience perception of "success" undermine a band's ability to raise needed funds, and what does it mean to "succeed" as an artist, anyway? How does or doesn't it relate to financial stability? And what's the deal with Patreon? We get into all that and more! Sean also offers a tip on consistency in social media posting, and everyone tries to guess which song Sean misheard as “What a man, what a man. Rock a party like nobody can.” The Shondes' new LP Brighton was released September 16 on Exotic Fever Records.
