Bandits vs Ogres Post Battle Analysis
Discord battle requested of Bandits vs Ogres with a CR draft of 4. After reviewing the monster CRs (as is my process) there are some changes to each: Bandits CR 1/8 ► 1/4, Captain is CR 3 if you use full multiattack, Ogre CR 2 ► 1 which is fixed with stronger weapons. After applying these CR changes, we have 8 CR 1/4 Bandits (CR 2), one Bandit Captain CR 2 (no full melee multiattack), and 2 CR 2 Ogres. Big brutes vs lots of crossbow bolts and scimitars. With the winner found, lets look at the data the dice gave us. If you haven't seen the video, you must watch it first before listening to this spoiler filled episode. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! This was a long battle that came down to blow to blow to find the champs of this battle.

The Hungry CR Exposed
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, I expose the CR for The Hungry. Not only is The Hungry hungry for your attention but also and time a caster heals in just about any form. Listen along as I discuss the basic information about this monster and how it's stats, defenses, and offenses can affect the Challenge Rating. Then finally how to use this monster in combat and other suggestions on what to use and not to use.
New Episodes every 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd of the month!
The idea of this podcast is to break monsters down into their bare components: DCR & OCR. These two values will allow us to see how strong they are and to see where D&D got the CR values from. I'm doing this because all too often, players skip right to level 3 to avoid the hell levels and possibly end up dead. Generally, each monster is a balancing act that isn't equal to the final value.

Diderius' CR Exposed
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, I expose the CR for Diderius. This mummy is found in the Rise of Tiamat campaign and could be an interesting fight or encounter, depending on how the group handles this. Listen along as I discuss the basic information about this monster and how it's stats, defenses, and offenses can affect the Challenge Rating. Then finally how to use this monster in combat and other suggestions on what to use and not to use.

Hydra CR Exposed
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, I expose the CR for the classic Hydra. This five-headed monstrosity is an iconic monster to use, especially when it starts growing heads back! Then finally how to use this monster in combat and other suggestions on what to use and not to use.

Chain Devil Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Chain Devil. This is a front line fiend that loves to use chains w/ reach (basically whips) to torcher and disrupt the players plans. Making sure this fiend is in a room with extra chains is critical as well. Listen along as I discuss the basic information about this monster and how it's stats, defenses, and offenses can affect the Challenge Rating. Then finally how to use this monster in combat and other suggestions on what to use and not to use.

Junior Drow Priestess of Lolth Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Junior Drow Priestess of Lolth. If we use all of their magics to their fullest advantage, DM's can really crank up the damage! Listen along as I discuss the basic information about this monster and how it's stats, defenses, and offenses can affect the Challenge Rating. Then finally how to use this monster in combat and other suggestions on what to use and not to use.

Cloud Giant Smiling One Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Cloud Giant Smiling One. This particular giant is interesting as it's more of a caster/controller type rather than just being "smash all tiny creatures" type. The idea is that the giant "should" gain advantage somehow to increase their damage out put but it's not dependent for the printed CR value. Listen along and you'll see that even though you may want to gain advantage, it's not needed in order for the giant to stay at it's printed value.

Spy Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Spy. Having looked at the Challenge Rating for the Goblin, I knew this "monster" would be about the same with it's Cunning Action. Good thing I didn't use this Spy in a previous quest because it's a little higher than it should be from it's printed CR. The funny part is, it's not nearly as dramatic as the Goblin was. So sit back, get a quick drink of water, and listen how the Spy's CR breaks down.

Vargouille Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Vargouille. Quite the interesting monster to look at with it's curse that can help repopulate the Vargouille community. If you're a DM, use that feature sparingly unless you want to spur a side-quest to save that player's character. Otherwise, the Vagouille is a very quick and straight forwards monster to look at and give battle tactics for.

Frost Giant Skeleton Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e, I deconstruct the Frost Giant Skeleton. The most viewed Monster Shorts episode from my YouTube channel. This episode goes into more detail that the 60 second shorts episode can and discusses how I find the CR rating through calculations, if there are any discrepancies, and battle tactics if I were to use it at the table. 👍 This follows the standard process you're accustomed too but now in a more relaxed nature and without the rush for time. I hope you enjoy this episode and you can contact me with the email address below with recommendations or other comments about D&D 5e and the monsters we find in our adventuers!

Booyahg Booyahg Booyahg Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look at the Booyahg Booyahg Booyahg from Volo's guide to monsters. When you get to the section about this monster, you'll only find a small blurb that says, "hey, go to the mage page in the monster's manual" and then you give it nimble escape and wild magic surges on every cast. Wow, is this a crazy deconstruction this week, it nearly melted my brain with all the possible DCR values flying around! Come listen as I do my best to give you the proper CR value for the Booyahg Booyahg Booyahg, which I believe means "magic" in Goblin.

Thorn Slinger Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look at the Thorn Slinger from Tales of the Yawning Portal. This large plant is a printed CR 1/2 that can hide among the other plants and surprise it's victims, first, with a barrage of thorns. After which, any unsuspecting creatures that get too close to combat the plant will find that they're quickly grappled by the sticky fluids the blossoms produce. Come join along as we deconstruct this plant and look at it's battle mechanics to determine if the CR 1/2 is correct or not.

Displacer Beast Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look at the iconic Displacer Beast & the Reduced Threat version from Tales from the Yawning Portal. With only two traits to work off of and a simple multiattack. It's good we look at both versions of this monster since the Displacer Beast is a quick run down and has a very standard array for it's DCR & OCR. So come join us as we take a look at this elusive, angry cat and see how it deconstructs.

Tanarukk Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Tanarukk from Volo's Guide to Monster. This nasty fiend of an orc has a battle fury to relentless, it could very well TPK the group if the players are not careful. With that, this episode is a difficult one to deconstruct due to the Unbridled Fury it has. Sadly there's no guidance from D&D on this reaction and I'll do my best to break this monster down and give a variety of different FCRs.

Corpse Flower Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the corpse flower from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. This CR 8 plant monster has some great traits to work with for either defensive tactics or offensive tactics. Listen along as I deconstruct the corpse flower to find it's rather low DCR and it's pretty high OCR to understand what brings this stinky plant to "life."

Abyssal Wretch Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the abyssal wretch from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. This basic monster is an easy CR ¼ monster for monster players to defeat. As we deconstruct this monster, though, this might not be the case for every class to easily defeat the abyssal wretch. This episode quickly covers the little bits of traits but goes into discusses about the big differences a simple resistance to cold, fire, and lightening and immunity to poison can make in a match.

Hook Horror Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the hook horror monstrosity. This monster is as basic as they come for a CR 3. With virtually nothing special in it's skills & traits area to the quick actions section. This monster proves to be a fast deconstruction but shows some interesting numbers when it comes to the DCR & OCR sections and review.

Season 2 Special Announcement - Coming May 8th
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters, Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e. I discuss the changes coming to the podcast for Season 2. Much has gone on since I last recorded and uploaded a scheduled podcast. I've since changed the videos I upload to YouTube and now can make both the YouTube channel and podcast unique and different! If anything, I may now upload my podcast episodes to YouTube, lmao. Anyways, this short update announcement just goes over what's been going on and how my videos/podcast have evolved and quickly!

Remorhaz Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the remorhaz, the terror of the frozen norths. This monster was more technical, this time, to pull together and used the mechanics found in the giant frog as well as a new feature we haven't looked at yet. So come join us on this quick journey to see how the CR of the remorhaz fairs and if it's a properly balanced monster or not! I hope you enjoy it, it's a fiery good time.

Anvilwrought Raptor Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the anvilwrought raptor. A construct created for purposes of carrying messages to and from people that could afford these flying, mechanical raptors. As well as being used for spying and other nefarious deeds. The great thing is that this raptor could be used a familiar if the DM allows it as per the variant rules not covered in this episode. Just as usual though, the findings of this raptor's CR value should come at no surprise and taking a listen will provide valuable information for any DM or player if they're used in combat.

Orc Claw of Luthic Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Orc Claw of Luthic. These female orc clan members show service to the clan through their healing arts and protection in home lands. Don't let this fool your adventuring party though. If provoked, the orc claws aren't named so for their looks. The claws are lacquered to razor points and used for fighting. Listen in to see how this divine caster can also put up a good fight!

Yuan-ti Mind Whisperer Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the shape-changing Yuan-ti Mind Whisperer. This is a fun monster that not only combines the shapeshifting from last weeks Werewolf but also includes innate spellcasting and regular Warlock spellcasting. This gives the monster a very rounded approach to not only casting spells to subdue players but also strong melee attacks as well. I hope you enjoy this weeks episode because it leaves some unanswered questions and a first for the podcast.

Werewolf Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the shape-changing werewolf and the dangers that the party can encounter when running into this beast of the night. This episode was a surprising one and a bit different than our usual fare. On top of that, I swapped my recording location and there is a small amount of an echo but shouldn't be too distracting. I'm working out the best methods for top level recording without having to spend a fortune. With that, I hope you enjoy this episodes howl at the moon and learn a thing or two about the dangers of the D&D 5e werewolf.

Enchanter Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the enchanter. This CR 5 humanoid is a full fledged caster and all of it's offensive capabilities will come from any damaging spells they may have. Luckily there were only a few to go over but it made it easier to calculate the final CR for this enchanter. If you'd like to see spell damage table and calculated DPR for this enchanter, then see my Google sheet for this spell caster.

Bandit Captain Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the bandit captain and see how this ruffian leads a band of misfits and dregs of society into a somewhat functioning organization that steals and pillages local towns, travels, and the such. The bandit captain has some new features not yet discussed on the podcast that show how these extra little features really change the final CR of the monster.

Copper Dragon Wyrmling Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the copper dragon wyrmling and what makes this chaotic good dragon a threat to your adventurers if they decide to fight it. On the other hand, this wyrmling could be the mind-controlled product of a dragon cult and forced to fight adventurers. So this'll be good knowledge for any player or DM and how the dragon's breath can really tear an adventuring group up. Also, it looks like the goblin from the last episode wasn't happy that their episode ended so early and messed with this episode. I hope you bear through the tin can sound as the information provided is well worth listening. It's not unbearable, just not the quality you're used too.

Goblin Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the goblin and all it's hijinks it can get into. The goblin has to be the monster that blew my mind when I deconstructed it so many years ago and saw how unproportionable it is vs it's actual CR. This goblin is what spurred the passion of deconstructing D&D monsters to see how they actually look bit by bit. So enjoy this episode as we go over all the things that make these little green baddies... well bad.

Gray Ooze Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Gray Ooze and it's metal eating qualities. Although this ooze isn't much to look at in terms of DCR and OCR. The real fun is the metal eating traits it has, even though it doesn't effect the final CR for it. Damaging a players non-magical metal armor and weapons is pretty hilarious. Besides that, this ooze has the typical lower DCR and high OCR. Come take a listen and see how this ooze's traits affect the FCR!

Giant Frog Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Giant Frog and how it's bite IS as bad as it's... hop? This beast was a fun one to break down as it introduces the concept of the grapple/restrict mechanic and how it factors into the final CR of the beast. The fascinating part of the bite/grapple is how it works and heavily depends on the size of the target it's biting to allow further disrupting of the players plans. Come listen and see how this Giant Frog deconstructs!

Feathergale Knight Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Feathergale knight from one of D&D's modules. This knight is part of an air elemental cult and maintains their base of operations up atop mountains where the winds run free. These knights also wear a special piece of armor, called wingwear, that allows them to glide down to lower surfaces safely. This armor is also where I get confused, part way through the episode and start referring to them as Winggale knights rather than Feathergale knights. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Piercer Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the piercer and see how deadly this living stalactite can be when it drops from a variety of heights and what happens if it misses. So if it's a 10 ft. drop or a 60 ft. drop, it's going to be a interesting one-shot monster. Going over the piercer we'll also discuss some skills & traits it has and move on to all of the usual stuff.

Giant Rat Deconstruction
In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look over the Giant Rat and touch on the variant a little bit. Going through the giant rat, we'll discuss some skills & traits it has and move on to all of the usual stuff. Better sound as the last episode but still a little stiff in terms of nerves. The episodes get better and smoother as I get more comfortable recording. Speaking of, this episode was recorded back in September of 2020.

Troglodyte Deconstruction
This is the second episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e. In this episode the sound quality gets much better as I've found a better spot to record my audio in. On top of that, we look at the Troglodyte and find out this monster is a bit underrated of the CR 1/4 it is printed at. Now with 90% less heavy breathing!

Bandit Deconstruction
This is the first introductory episode of 8-bit Monsters Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e. This was the first time I recorded an episode and did this right at my computer in a very non-sound proof room. There will be a lot of echo because of this as well as a bunch of nervous energy. You'll hear some word stumbling and somewhat robotic talk as I learn how to record an episode for podcasts and YouTube.
