It’s almost here and we’ll finally know who the new Lions will be. This week Randy and Rich keep exploring the names in the draft and the rounds the Lions may find them in. Maybe it’s because the Lions are a better team than we’ve had to talk about in years, but it’s been tougher than most to guess the game plan being hatched by Brad Holmes and his staff. No less fun but a bit more contentious and sometimes the discussions have gotten more heated due to differing viewpoints. QB or not to QB, or just when to QB. And really you could insert just about any position into that last sentence. We have one more Pod before the Draft begins and it seems a safe bet there will be more than just the draft on our minds.

We’ll be crossing our fingers for trading out of the 6th over all pick, while waiting over a month for news on Jalen Carters legal issues. News of in house free agent signings are trickling in and we hope there are a few more to talk about next week, as we continue to hash out the possibilities in this years draft.

The 2023 draft season is upon us. The Lions and Bears are among the teams that will shape the first round and set the dominoes up for the rounds to come. Randy and Rich discuss some of the possible scenarios at the top and whether they’re popular or unrealistic, each has its merits and detractors. There is still cloudy free agent talk that will begin to clear up as teams make decisions about their players and team direction in 2023. But, until then we have Championship weekend, the Super Bowl, and all of a wintery February to enjoy while our early discussions kick off draft season.

The Lions finish the 2021 season winning their last three games at home with a win against Green Bay that hopes to point towards many a good Sunday down the road. We spend a lot of time on the offense, and rightfully so, but the defense had its moments when nobody really gave them a chance. The next few weeks we’ll have a season wrap up and get into Free Agency before really hitting the draft. Another almost win in Atlanta this week as the Lions come closer to sealing up the #2 spot in the draft. The stats show the Falcons were out played by Dan Campbell’s Lions but 6 false starts and a game ending interception helped keep them as a two win team for now. The Lions move on from a now surprising second place, 7 win Atlanta team to a 4th place, 5 win Seattle team that just lost to the Bears in a snowy game in Seattle. This week on the @M66NDLP we have heavy hearts for the Lions 2021 season. It’s not over and there is still plenty of football left. This week on the M-66 North Detroit Lions Podcast Randy, and Rich are joined by our friend Rocky, as Tom takes the week off. It was great to have Rocky so Randy and I didn’t talk about the #66yardheartbreak for two hours. We split the episode between offense and defense while going through the roster updates as well. This week on the @M66NDLP Randy, Tom, and Rich dive right into the game. Lions at Packers is always a game we look towards on the schedule initially, to see when it’s played, in hopes there’s no possible freezing cold December snowstorm on the horizon. This year it wasn’t December but the weather still played its part, with two second half fumbles by Goff, possibly due to the September Lake Michigan rain-effect. There were a few transactions to note this week and we give our takes on the roster as it stands. Next up are the Baltimore Ravens as they make their way to Ford Field. Hopefully, Baltimore’s injury ridden preseason, compounded with a short week, after an emotional Sunday night win will all work in Detroit’s favor, on their way to the first win of Dan Campbell’s coaching career.

#Lions football is back!!! Randy, Tom, and Rich bring you this weeks @M66NDLP. Besides the outcome Dan Campbell’s Lions gave us everything he said they would. Finding themselves in a deep hole they nearly erased a 41-17 deficit in the last minutes of the game with what may become a trademark toughness and grit. There were a lot of story lines this week including some transactions that happened before the game due to Taylor Decker ending up on the Injured/Reserve list due to a finger injury. Another key injury happened during the game when cornerback Jeff Okudah left the game with what turned out to be a season ending Achilles injury. It wasn’t all bad and the Lions picked themselves up like Dan Campbell said they would. Great offensive line play, great running game, TJ Hockenson, and a guy named Trey Flowers 👀 were immediate standouts in the loss. There were more negatives to point out but we’ll let you listen in for those, lol.

Randy, Tom, and Rich ventured south of the 45th parallel last week. Picking up Rocky along the way the M-66 crew had smooth sailing to Detroit as I-75 hit a stand still going north. Our personal guide for the weekend was Ted as he helped us avoid all of the current construction going on in the Metro area. It was a beautiful weekend to be outside in Allen Park and the atmosphere was full of mutual excitement and admiration felt between, not just the fans and players, but between the fans and Lions staff as well. Randy, Tom, and Rich are still processing everything we took in during our four hour tour of Allen Park and our lunch afterwards at the Melvindale staple, Fredi The Pizza Man! The football was fun, the food was never ending, and the friends and Lions family was #OnePride! We do talk some football in there too, lol, as we meander between our visit and events that happened after our trip. There was an addition to the OL group and pads went on Tuesday morning, which really points to the start of football. It was a fast hour that ended too fast. We’ll be back next week to preview the first pre-season game of 2021!!!

Hopefully by now you have sufficiently sprung forward and are now celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and the Football New Year. Randy, Tom, and Rich welcome our friend Todd back to the show. You could say we recorded a little early Maybe we should have waited a day. But Tuesday is our day and the NFL doesn’t wait for anybody and the Lions got to work. We discuss two free agents the Lions retained, Defensive End Romeo Okwara and LB/ST Jalen Reeves-Maybin plus how Mike Disner used a new CBA rule to keep JRM. We’ve talked in the past about eight cuts the Lions could make in order to get under the cap before the end of the league year. Seven of those eight players have been released with DL Nick Williams the lone player making it to the new year. Speculation on Defensive Line and Running Back get the rest of our attention before the hour is up. Then a few hours later the Lions, while burning the midnight oil, kept working and signed DT Michael Brockers and RB Jamal Williams. Now Thursday morning we wake to another late night deal. Another ex-Packer, QB Tim Boyle, has been signed this week. We’ll be sure to get to these additions and everything else that happens between now and next Tuesday. We’d like to mention the nonprofit from Uganda that Tommy teamed with named Acrobatic Circus Troupe. ACT helps mentor and feed kids in Katwe, Kamala, Uganda by teaching them Acrobatics and juggling, which Tommy says gives them hope and purpose.

Here in February us Lions fans get a break from all of the packed news days we’ve had recently. Randy, Tom, and Rich bring this weeks @M66NDLP conversation knowing that the 2021 salary cap isn’t set and cap casualties are just beginning to trickle in, which makes it hard to speculate on in coming free agents. And because of this any draft talk is kind of premature. So, we continue buttoning up the coaching staff, talk about free agents Kenny Golladay and Okwara , and consider some needy positions on the roster. Our “Friend of the Show” Rocky tweeted at us this week. With a number of the national media picking the Lions to finish last in 2021 and only outliers predicting a quick turnaround, Rocky asks for our opinion on team building and the different scenarios involved with the Lions figuring out when to pull the trigger on a new QB. And as the Lions move on with that search it was announced that the Staffords left one more charitable gift as they left town. This week from the, Tip of The Mitt, it’s all about what the @M66NDLP crew are hearing from Lions Training Camp. Randy, Tom, and Rich start with roster news. Wide Receiver Chris Lacy and Running Back Wes Hills are back, and we welcome Defensive Lineman Will Clarke, as well as Running Back Jonathan Williams. Of course there had to be a casualty so, we say good by to Offensive Lineman Caleb Benenoch. We give a lot a time to the Linebackers and the new wave of Special Teams players. In health and safety news Coach Matt Patricia is a fan of lineman wearing knee braces and the team is doing very well keep the Covid at bay. It’s a shame how High School and College football players will be affected by the limitations needed to keep everyone safe. In the second half we catch up with Lions veterans Jamal Agnew, Miles Killabrew and Jalen Reeves-Mabin. All three have a chance to see their roles on the team grow in the next few weeks. Before this weeks episode of the @M66NDLP gets rolling Randy, Tom, and Rich take some time to honor former Lions Defensive End and Petoskey, Michigan Native, Herb Orvis. Yup, the #Lions lost another one score game that, at one point, they had the lead in. Randy, Tom, and Rich discuss Jeff Driskel and Matthew Stafford, and the QB situation moving forward. The injury report is a long discussion, as we try to figure out substitution possibilities on the O-Line. Bo Scarorough was a nice surprise, although it’s too bad he didn’t have much help keeping the offense on the field. This week we hope to hear some news about Austin Bryant. It’s time for the Lions to make a decision on whether he’s ready to be activated or not. Hopefully Bryant can get some football in before the season ends. Hey there Lions fans! The fourth loss of the season is upon us. Randy, Tom, and Rich touch on a couple happenings of the week. A new face from Dallas appears and a fairly clean game injury wise leads to Austin Bryant having been taken off the injured reserve list giving the Lions 21 days to activate him. The final play of the game gives us a chance to talk about the Jumbo Package and the Full Back. Christian Jones received a two-year extension shoring up the third/fourth LB spot. The question is what other changes could be made at that position? CB Darius Slay had some choice remarks on the defense after the game on Sunday. Is he right? Are his thoughts telling of his future with the team? It’s only week 9, and all is not lost, but the toughest division in football going 0-4 was a glaring missed opportunity for the Lions to gain ground on the Vikings and Packers. The second half of the podcast moves to the offense. A team shouldn’t have to score 30+ points to win a game but it feels the Lions could and should be scoring more often. Matthew Stafford had another game with two 100 yard receivers but, he fell down in the pocket for a sack, was responsible for an interception, and credited with a fumble on a botched handoff to McKissic. If the defense can get healthy and get their act together Matthew and the Offense won’t be tasked with having to play perfect football in order to win. 3-4-1 marks the halfway point of the season. 7-1? Can it be done? Hey there Lions fans! Add a W to win column and start the season’s second half off right. Randy,Tom, and Rich were all ready for trade talk but Bob Quinn made no new moves. We start with the injury report. Some new names appear after this one but it’s the name that didn’t appear pre-game, Da’Shawn Hand, that made a big difference. The run defense got a real shot in the arm and had their best performance of the season holding. NYG running back Sayquon Barcley to 64 yards. On the other side of the ball the Lions running game woes continued. Can Ty Johnson catch a break? It seems every other time he touches the ball his efforts are called off by a penalty. Matthew Stafford had another great game, as well as the receiving core. How about Marvin Hall, the speedster we didn’t know we had!!! The third phase of the game in Special Teams has two very special players in Miles Killabrew and Jalen Reeves-Maybin are #1 and #2, respectively, leading the NFL in tackles. The biggest roster move this week was LB and Special Teams ace Steve Longa being elevated to the 53 man roster. The rich get richer. Next up are the Oakland Raiders. Seemingly better than their 3-4 record we’ll how the Lions fare on this trip out west.

There’s big news this week breaking during our recording. The trade deadline approaches and everyone has been talking about what position of need the Lions might be chasing. Well, before any of that happened Bob Quinn sent Safety Quandre Diggs to long time Lions trade partner Seattle. Another loss came through the Injury to Kerryon Johnson, as he was placed on injured reserve. And to round things out the third loss off the week happens to be the third loss of the season. The Minnesota Vikings had there way with Detroit’s defense for most of the day. Thankfully the same can be said for Matthew Stafford and the passing game. Matthew became the fastest QB to 40,000 career passing yards, while throwing four touchdown passes to Marvin Jones Jr. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough. We had all hoped for a defensive lift from Da’Shawn Hand after finishing the week as a full participant in practice. The wait continues this week after another game of bottom of the league pass rushing. Can the Lions pull it together against the NYG and get things headed in the right direction? The M-66 Crew doesn’t spend the whole episode on phantom penalties, and referee ire but we easily could have. The refs don’t control how the Lions run the ball in the Red Zone. The refs aren’t keeping DT Hand on the injury list. The refs won’t stop this team from getting better but the Lions shouldn’t have to push through these debacles time and time again. Hopefully the league speeds up it’s slow changing ways, in this High-Def Slo-Mo age, and fixes it’s officiating problems to maintain its integrity. Heading into the bye week the Lions will have time to learn from losing to the Chiefs and heal up a bit before the trip to Lambeau Field on Monday night Oct 14. Randy, Tom, and Rich start off refreshing the newer names on the roster and discuss another slew of roster moves and practice squad changes. All of that is really just a distraction before our favorite segment, “Stupid Penalties Talk,” false starts and takes too much time. Next is the offense. Kerryon Johnson became the fifth Lion in four games to gain over 100 yards joining Hockenson, Amendola, Golladay, and Jones. Unfortunately Kerryon is the only one of the group that was unable to add a touchdown to his stat line. It’s hard to get away from turnovers and penalties, in this episode, but the defense gave us a reason. They deserved a lot of love for disrupting the Chiefs in ways few other teams have been able to do, even when healthy. In the end though the Lions fell short and the bandwagon still isn’t all that crowded. Everybody knows what they have to do. And that is WIN. The Lions are the last team to enter the race for the NFC North crown as the Lions get ready for Lambeau. It feels like good timing as the Lions are rolling now. If you can’t beat the Chiefs just beat the Packers and watch the bandwagon fill up even more.

The Detroit Lions get their first win of the season in exciting fashion! Randy, Tom, and Rich explore the win and which #Lions players came thorough on offense and defense. It seems each week a different name will rise to the occasion in this new offense while Special Teams play is still a worry even after last years mid-season coaching change. The injury to LT Taylor Decker was admirably backed up by Tyrell Crosby, who is no stranger to injury himself. The defensive line is still missing key players but the defensive backs are making up for the lack of QB pressure. Yes, the good, bad and ugly of it, although not in that order. The 2019 Preseason comes to an end as Bob Quinn and Co. narrow the Lions roster from 90 to 53. A few surprises were in store for the fans eagerly awaiting news about the players they hoped to see playing come Sunday.
