The nursing faculty shortage is a critical component in addressing the nursing shortage. The inability to recruit and retain competent faculty is a cultural phenomenon, stemming from systems issues that frequently contribute to faculty burnout and moral distress. The novice faculty member often enters academia unprepared for the faculty tripartite role, and often encountering a less-than healthy work environment.
