The Open Research Knowledge Graph - A conversation with Vinodh Ilangovan and Jennifer D'Souza

Vinodh Ilangovan and Jennifer D'Souza work on the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) aiming to describe research papers in a structured manner and make them easier to find and compare. They join Jo on this podcast to give more insight into the tool and their organization.

The Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) is a tool designed to make research outputs more discoverable and machine-actionable. The ORKG uses a semantic model to represent information and provides structured descriptions of articles, allowing for easier searching and building upon previous research. The tool is currently in English, but efforts are being made to incorporate other languages. Researchers can sign up for an account and add content to the ORKG, which can then be visualized and cited. The ORKG aims to enhance the quality of human life by improving access to scientific knowledge.

Making science more sustainable in the lab and also across institutes and universities - A conversation with Jan Heidelberger

Jan Heidelberger works as Scientific Coordinator for the Max Planck School Matter to Life in Heidelberg. During his time as a PhD student, he co-founded the grassroots initiative IMB Green at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz together with colleagues and has since been passionate about implementing sustainable measures in the laboratory and science sector. After joining MPS Matter to Life, he joined the Max Planck Sustainability Network (MPSN) and has been part of the steering committee since June 2021.

Jan joins Jo to talk about the ways of making science more sustainable in the lab and also across institutes and universities.

The Max Planck Sustainability Network (MPSN) now comprises 45 individual sustainability groups at various Max Planck Institutes (MPI). In 2021, the network published the Catalog of Recommendations for Sustainability in the Max Planck Society (https://www.nachhaltigkeitsnetzwerk.mpg.de/doi-2021-care), which contains measures that can be implemented universally at institutes. The network is in exchange with national and international partners to jointly develop ideas and find solutions to make their own work more sustainable and to encourage and support others to do so.

Improving our quality of life to make an impact - A conversation with Natasha Martinoska

Improving our quality of life to make an impact - A conversation with Natasha Martinoska

Natasha Martinoska loves coaching people to open their hearts, discover their true identity and potential, build strong self-confidence, take their place, and find their drive to play a bigger game without hesitation.

She has always been interested in what makes people really successful and truly happy. For a long time in her early life, she thought that this means a good education, a good job, a good salary, and a high status. Since she's educated in a culture (in Macedonia, a little country in the South of Europe) where the social control is very high and belonging to the family and the group is very important, as well as the success symbols from outside, she became very good at fulfilling people’s expectations and achieving those symbols (good education, good salary, high status, respected job…) to feel worthy of Love.

She discusses with Jo about her career and her journey into becoming a coach.

[BONUS] The Data Quality Imperative - A conversation at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022

[BONUS] The Data Quality Imperative - A conversation at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022

From manuscript preparation to business-related best practices, scholarly publishers increasingly integrate data capture and analysis into their systems. These efforts are considered essential to enable interoperability, ensure transparency, and build trust with authors, funders, and institutions.

On Thursday, October 20, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, CCC presented The Data Quality Imperative: Improving the Scholarly Publishing Ecosystem. a special Frankfurt Studio session.

Panelists Sybille Geisenheyner, Director of Open Science Strategy & Licensing, American Chemical Society; Dr. Johanna Havemann, Trainer and Consultant in Open Science Communication, and Co-founder & Strategic Coordinator, AfricaArxiv; and Laura Cox, Senior Director, Publishing Industry Data, CCC, all shared insights with CCC’s Chris Kenneally on the impact of consistent data quality strategy on the people, processes, and technology in your organization.

“There needs to be trust in the data, and that is always something we start with,” said Geisenheyner. “The data will never be 100% perfect, but it can get even better. How many articles get published? What is the APC spend on an individual basis? What is the subscription spend? We do have a lot of data. And to share that data is key.”
