Adventures in Theology

By Brayden Brookshier

Who says the Bible has to be boring?

Join podcast host, Brayden Brookshier, as he takes listeners into the biblical text and teaches us to learn to read the story, trust the story, and live the story of the Bible. Each episode is brief—like a devotional—but profound, thought-provoking, and full of enthusiasm!

We explore the Bible in search of timeless, life-giving truths; because, after all, there is no greater adventure than knowing the God of the Bible.

Brayden's vocation and education involve biblical research. MA (New Testament Research), Johnson University.

Abdu has been on with us before and he is back again! This time we talk about his latest book, More Than a White Man's Religion, but we especially hone in on the issue of slavery in the ancient world and how we read that in light of modern times. As always, it's a great discussion with this very intelligent Christian apologist.  Get Abdu's book: More Than a White Man's Religion: Why the Gospel Has Never Been Merely White, Male-Centered, or Just Another Religion

#91 - Vocational Singleness, Friendships, and Equipping the Church to Love Gay People (with Pieter Valk of Equip Your Community)

The first episode back in a while and we are not messing around! I found Pieter on Instragram and have been enthralled by the awesome ministry he has been doing. Pieter is a gay Christian who is committed to a biblically traditional sexual ethic (celibacy). What makes Pieter stand out is just how compelling his life is. He is showcasing how the Church can retrieve the power of friendships and restore dignity to those who choose a life of vocational singleness. Listen in for some great insights from my new friend!

#61 - The Crowd Hears; The Disciple Responds (Sermon on the Mount, Part 15)

We conclude the sermon on the mount by looking at Matthew 7:13-29, where Jesus challenges the crowd who has been listening in to respond to the message. We cannot simply admire the teaching, we are called to take action and to build the foundation of our life on our it.

#60 - The Surprising Context of the "Golden Rule" (Sermon on the Mount, Part 14)

Everyone agrees that the "Golden Rule" is worth living by. However, the famous quote from Jesus does not come out of thin air. There is a context to it. Listen in as we talk about the source and power of being able to live out the "Golden Rule."

#59 - How to Have Meaningful Conversations in Polarizing Times

#59 - How to Have Meaningful Conversations in Polarizing Times

We take a single-week break from our series on the Sermon on the Mount to address an important topic. All of us are aware of how polarizing almost any topic is right now. Whether a conversation of faith, or politics, or almost anything else. Here, in this episode, I am not interested in bringing up any particular issue, instead I want to challenge us to be people who think critically and engage responsibly in conversations. I want to give you some original thoughts on how I have meaningful conversations with those who I disagree with, or vice versa. The key here is not that we back away from hard conversations, but that we make sure we have done quality research, understand the other side, represent them well, and focus on the ideas. More will be said, so tune in!

#57 - What Do You See? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 12)

What does it mean that the eye is the lamp of the body? Matthew 6:19-24 presents a triad contrast of two's: two treasures, two eyes, and two masters. The journey of wholeness involves making sure we find ourselves on the right side of the contrasts.

#56 - Praying to the God Who Hears (Sermon on the Mount, Part 11)

#56 - Praying to the God Who Hears (Sermon on the Mount, Part 11)

Why do you sometimes pray lengthy prayers? There is certainly nothing wrong with praying for great lengths of time. However, WHY we do and what we believe about God as we approach Him in prayer makes all the difference. Matthew 6:7-15 is an insightful passage which begins by contrasting how the pagan "gods" of the Graeco-Roman world listen, versus how our Father listens to our prayers. The differences cannot be exaggerated!

#55 - Who Do You Do It For? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 10)

Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reasons? In Matthew 6:1-6 Jesus challenges our motivation why we do something and, more specifically, who we do it for. After all, our audience will always reward us, so who is our audience and what does that reveal about the authenticity of our righteousness?

#54 - Be Whole as Your Heavenly Father is Whole (Sermon on the Mount, Part 9)

Turn the other cheek? Pray for our enemies? Everything that is said in Matthew 5:38-48 sounds too idealistic and not practical to actually live out. Or is that the case? What if Jesus was inviting us into a greater level of "wholeness" as we reverse retaliation and repay our enemies with love? Join us as we adventure into one of the most difficult passages in the Bible in terms of putting into action the ethics of our Lord!

#53 - The Greater Righteousness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 8)

#53 - The Greater Righteousness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 8)

What does it mean to have a righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees? Is this even feasible? What if it was? What is Jesus getting at, here? As we look at Matthew 5:20-37, we see how Jesus begins to unpack what this "greater righteousness" is. The true righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees. Today we address what Jesus says about anger and lust, with far more implications than can be summarized in such a quick description!

#52 - How Being "Salt" and "Light" Connects Us to the Whole Story! (Sermon on the Mount, Part 7)

Have you ever heard idiomatic terms or phrases that needed explaining? The terms "salt" and "light" are terms that need a deeper exploration. As we look at Matthew 5:13-20, we see how Jesus calls His followers "salt" and "light," terms that connect them to the greater story of the Bible. His point? Well, you'll have to listen in to find out! I reference quite a few passages today, (in this order): Numbers 18:19, 2 Chronicles 13:5, Exodus 30:35, Leviticus 2:13, & Isaiah 42:6.

#51 - Purity of Heart and Peacemaking (Sermon on the Mount, Part 6)

#51 - Purity of Heart and Peacemaking (Sermon on the Mount, Part 6)

Being pure in heart does not equate to being perfect in heart. As we look at Matthew 5:8 we see how, when we cross-reference it with Psalm 51, is not about never doing anything wrong again, but about a heart condition that rhythmically returns to God in repentance, knowing that God is the only one who can purify and renew our heart so that we can stand pure before Him. In this episode, we conclude the macarisms and go all the way through verse 10. (Technically verses 11-12 are part of the macarisms as a continual thought on the eighth macarism.) Keep listening in the following weeks as we continue exploring the Sermon on the Mount!

Mercy: it is so much more than how many of us narrowly think of it! Looking at Matthew 5:7 we explore the broad and dynamic meaning of mercy and how we can even learn something incredibly memorable and powerful about mercy from an illustration about a cup and the ocean. Tune in and try the challenge at the end of the episode!

#49 - Starving for Righteousness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 4)

Jesus congratulates those who hunger for righteousness. But what does righteousness even mean? Looking at Matthew 5:6 we lean into looking a little closer as to what it means to be a people that are desperate for righteousness.

#48 - The Counter-Intuitive Way to Take Over the World (Sermon on the Mount, Part 3)

What do all world powers throughout history? Well, they certainly did not rise to rule the world by means of meek methods. Yet, in Matthew 5:5 Jesus congratulates the gentle-spirited because they will inherit the earth. How can this be? And what does this mean? Join us as we explore the counter-intuitive way to take over the world according to Jesus!

#47 - Happy Are the ... Unhappy ... ? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 2)

In the second macarism (Matthew 5:4), Jesus congratulates those who are grieving as the ones who have it figured out. Why? A few questions provoke this... What kind of mourning are we talking about? How does mourning lend itself to experiencing God's comfort? And in what way does God deal with the very things that cause us grief? Listen in as we go in-depth on the second macarism in Jesus's paradoxical path to true happiness!

#46 - Spiritual Poverty & the Paradox of Happiness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 1)

Does the world really know the best way to live? The Sermon on the Mount presents a counter-intuitive way of being that produces true flourishing. We begin this series by looking at Matthew 5:1-3 and how the paradox of happiness is presented as a posture of the heart, specifically, recognizing that we are spiritual beggars before God. Listen in as we explore how Jesus connects spiritual poverty to being "happy" or "blessed," and how this results in receiving the kingdom of heaven.

#45 - Understanding and Delighting in God as Trinity (with Abdu Murray of RZIM)

#45 - Understanding and Delighting in God as Trinity (with Abdu Murray of RZIM)

The word "Trinity" is a single word compacting a robust truth about the nature of God being one Deity in three persons. Unfortunately, many Christians have a hard time explaining (let alone understanding) one of the core doctrines of the faith. Enter Abdu. Abdu Murray finds the subject of the Trinity his favorite. As a former Muslim, this was one he used to get Christian's stuck on, now, he (rightly) sees it as one of the most fundamental and distinct doctrines of Christianity. Listen in as Abdu and I provide insights into how to understand and delight in the Trinity!

#44 - God Wants You to Be Both Happy and Holy

There is a common phrase you have probably heard in or around church: "God doesn’t want you to be happy; He wants you to be holy." But is that true? I don't think so. Listen in to today's episode as I explain how there is an intrinsic relationship, and even inseparable relationship, between holiness and happiness. My friends, you don't have to choose one or the other. God wants you to be both holy and happy in Him.

#43 - The Center of the Poem; The Heart of the Book of Lamentations

When we are venting about genuine hardship, the last thing we need to be told is to "look on the bright side!" Lamentations is an important and often overlooked book of the Bible. Now, our circumstances certainly are not parallel to that of Lamentations, but the message of Lamentations is still beneficial for us today. How we read this book gives us insight and understanding of how to focus on hope, while also walking through difficult times.

#39 - The Return of Jesus Will Be Like a Royal Parade, Not a Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

I cannot tell you how many times I encounter people talking about "the rapture." It is so engrained in some Christian's minds, but is that what the message of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 really is about? Furthermore, is that really what we are hoping for when we anticipate the return of Christ? I don't think so. Listen in as we go verse by verse through this passage as we remember what the hope of the second coming entails!

Also, (while not discussed in the episode) I think it is important to note that "rapture theology" only came into existence in the 1800's. No one believed this in church history prior. For a quick video on the history of rapture theology, check out this 5-minute YouTube video from Dr. Ben Witherington: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_cVXdr8mVs&t=133s

Here is a summary of the three key things we wrap up with at the end. According to 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the return of Jesus will encompass:

The Return of Christ to forever reign in a new world with His people; The Resurrection of the body and all of creation; The Reunion of believers in Jesus, dead and alive.

#38 - The Real Prisoner Who Was Set Free (Acts 16, Part 2)

Last episode ended sitting with bewildermnet as Paul and Silas responded to their terrible circumstances with praise. What happens next might be even more shocking! There is so much to appreciate in the next few verses and their interaction with the Roman Jailor. And then we tie all of Acts 16 together with a nice bow showing how the three conversion stories have an awesome connection to an ancient Jewish prayer!

#34 - The Historical Reliability of the Resurrection of Jesus (With Historian Dr. Gary Habermas)

Can we defend the resurrection of Jesus from a historically reliable vantage point? Yes! And I brought on the most prominent voice on the topic to give a brief introduction into why. Dr. Gary Habermas is second-to-none in his forty-plus years of scholarly research and writing on this topic (and others). When people reference "the scholars" on the topic of the resurrection of Jesus, they better be dealing with Dr. Habermas' work. It was such an honor and a privilege to have him on. #32 - How Can We Be Full of the Spirit But Continually Filled by the Spirit?

#32 - How Can We Be Full of the Spirit But Continually Filled by the Spirit?

Scripture is clear that when we give our lives to Jesus we receive His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. As post-Pentecost, new covenant belivers, we are filled with the fullness of God's temple presence (1 Cor. 3:16). In light of that, why does Paul command believers to be continually filled by the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18? How can we be full of the Holy Spirit but also continually filled by the Spirit? Is this a contradiction? Or is there a rich paradox waiting to be explored! I believe the latter. Let's explore this great question!

#30 - The Untold Story of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-5, 1:6-8)

Welcome to part 2 of our Acts series, where we seek to explore major themes and passages in the book of Acts. Few episodes are as difficult to communicate as this one. On one side of things, this is an eye-opening dialogue on how Pentecost serves as a major hinge between phases of the biblical story; and yet, it is almost like trying to summarize the story of Israel at one event. And that is what makes Pentecost so profound... the single event showcases the Jewish believers in Jesus as the true Israel who have the honor of ushering in the new humanity of the new covenant. Listen in for a thought-provoking conversation as we explore the untold story of Pentecost!

#26 - Flowers, Weeds, and the Power of Habits

The phrase: "Don't pull weeds without planting flowers" has been deeply influential to me. Today, I share my candid, off the script insights on the topic of habits. Listen in as we talk about the journey of how healthy habits start as a duty, become a discipline, and (if we stick with it) they become a delight!

#24 - Let's Abandon the Phrase "Everything Happens For a Reason"

Some phrases and cliches may be trendy in culture or even in the Church. But does that make them true? Of course not! Popular opinion does not make something true or false. Phrases (and the beliefs behind them) have to be thought through and examined. Today, we discuss how the phrase "everything happens for a reason" is not biblical, not helpful, and should be abandoned altogether.

After my own study in the Bible on this subject, listening to many debates (some Chris was part of), and reading books on the subject, I came to the same conclusion as Chris; that the position, known as "Conditional Immortality" (aka "Annihilationism"), best represents the biblical view of hell.

Listen in with an open mind. We are not trying to cause division, we are simply trying to spur conversation. While this discussion may not be the most fun, it is an important topic.

Every Monday at 6pm (Pacific time) RethinkingHell.com goes live to discuss this topic. Tune in here: http://rethinkinghell.com/live/?fbclid=IwAR14OjQ7d92mhxMpXbCVqp1erCwJ4Xr8HTLU2COBedIpFewDVcryTC76Zlc

#22 - God's Law & the Good Life (With Matt Marzec)

Today, Matt and I discuss the relationship between God's Law and what we call "the good life." We hope to convey that God wired us with many innate desires that only can have their answers found in Him and His way of life.

#21 - Common Objections to God, Jesus, & the Bible (With Matt Marzec)

The past few weeks we have tackled questions like: "Why Jesus?" and "Why the Bible?" Today, I want to fire similar questions at my good friend, philosopher/apologist, Matt Marzec. We discuss the main objections that keep people in accepting there being an intelligent Creator; objections about Jesus; and objections about the Bible--all under 40 minutes!

#20 - Why the Bible? (With Frank Turek of CrossExamined.org)

Have you ever heard objections to the Bible like: "I can't believe the Bible because it was written by man." Maybe you have wrestled with these questions yourself. In today's episode, I have a conversation with world renowned apologist and speaker, Dr. Frank Turek of crossexamined.org. Join us as we defend the rational and logic behind the Bible being a reliable account of God's interaction with humanity. This is good!

#18 - The Economy of Grace: Equality of Reward & Status in the Kingdom of God

#18 - The Economy of Grace: Equality of Reward & Status in the Kingdom of God

I have heard people say things like: "Billy Graham was so faithful, so influential as a Christian, he will definitely have a greater heavenly reward than me. He will have a high position of authority in God's kingdom." But is this biblically true? Will there be degrees of reward and status in the next life? Join me as I refute the misconceptions and make a compelling case for equality of reward and status amongst believers. God's economy of grace and reward is not like our's. We live, speak, breathe, and give Gospel because we are filled with Gospel. Our obedience and good works are about appreciation and gratitude, not promotion and competition.

#16 - Returning to a Place We Have Never Been (Reimagining Heaven, Part 5)

If you have grown up in the Church you have probably heard about the "streets of gold," but have you ever been curious to know what that means? What if John's vision of the streets of gold is actually communicating something? Today we bring some memorable conclusions to Revelation's key theme of God's presence in the new creation.

#11 - The Most Important Words Joshua Ever Uttered (Joshua 24:14-15)

In this final episode of our series in Joshua, we cover what is the most important message Joshua ever spoke! We are looking at two verses from Joshua's final address to the people of God.  As we sit as some of the listeners, we quickly discover that this message transcends time and is for every generation. The underlying question Joshua lays out before the people is the question we must answer today. This episode has many quote-worthy moments so get ready to take notes.

#10 - The Old Testament as Our Heritage & Our Role in Environmentalism (2-Part Ft. Dr. Sandra Richter)

#10 - The Old Testament as Our Heritage & Our Role in Environmentalism (2-Part Ft. Dr. Sandra Richter)

In this packed episode I have a wonderful conversation with Old Testament Professor, Dr. Sandra Richter, who quickly has become a friend. This two-part conversation is lengthy, yet a rewarding one.

In our time together we tackle two discussion topics:

1) First, we clear the air with all of the confusion regarding the Old Testament. Isn't it an outdated book for those who are ethnically Jewish? Shouldn't we merely appreciate it as history? Dr. Richter and I beg to differ! If you are a believer (no matter your ethnic background) the Old Testament is your story, too! We both find ourselves specializing in the study of the Old Testament, so get ready for an engaging conversation in which we argue for the continual relevance and continuity that the Old Testament has for us today!

2) Second, (starting at 53 minutes, 18 seconds) we talk about Dr. Richter's upcoming book on environmentalism. You will discover that Dr. Richter's mission is so much more than just saving the trees; it is about saving lives! And it is more a theological discussion than a political one. Dr. Richter and I argue that the topic of environmentalism is an unavoidable one if we want to take our role seriously in bearing the image of God on earth.

We appreciate Dr. Richter and want to support her. Check out her resources available!

#5 - The Faith of a Prostitute (Joshua 2)

Today we will learn more about what it means to have the courage to trust. And we will learn from the most unlikely of people… a prostitute! In the story of Rahab we see that before any conquest takes place in the narrative of Joshua, mercy gets precedence. Listen in as I express how baffling, yet befitting, this story is in the grand narrative of the Bible. This goes to show that God's preference is mercy, not judgment.

#4 - The Courage to Trust (Joshua 1:5-9)

#4 - The Courage to Trust (Joshua 1:5-9)

Last episode we concluded with highlighting what made Joshua and Caleb such a great leaders to take the people into the promised land. They had what the Bible called "a different spirit" about them. I suggest that the "different spirit" was the courage to trust God, despite the obstacles in their way.  Okay, cool. So we should desire to have the courage to trust. But how do we cultivate that? How do we cultivate the courage to trust God? Ah! That is the question.

In this episode, we look at Joshua 1:5-9, and the fascinating literary structure in it, which reveals the answer to our question. Today we discuss the key, nestled at the center of the chiasm; the key of how to cultivate courageous trust. Join is in the 21 day challenge proposed at the end of the episode!  Here is the link to view the color-coated chiasm that we discuss on part of this episode:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SkWUKJLrRuQqqCouB7IKAAlS2l7lZOSgnEOFVcNS2Ss/edit

#3 - A Place to Call Home (Joshua 1:1-4)

#3 - A Place to Call Home (Joshua 1:1-4)

As we open up the text of Joshua it becomes clear that this "promised land" is REALLY important to these people. But why? What is the big deal about this plot of land? And why should I care about Joshua's quest to take the promised land? This is what we want to tackle on today's episode. And hey, if you think we are just talking ancient history, you will be surprised how encouraging this is for us, today!

#2 - Enough is Enough (Intro to Joshua)

#2 - Enough is Enough (Intro to Joshua)

We begin a series of episodes dedicated to exploring the book of Joshua! But like most books of the Bible, somethings have to be prefaced...

In this case, the elephant in the room with this book of the Bible is the violence and war due to it being a conquest narrative. Many Christians struggle with how to reconcile the love of God with the command to go eradicate this plot of land of its current inhabitants. How do we respond?

This episode contains six points of clarification, which help us reframe how we think of the conquest narrative of Joshua so that we can appreciate the message of the book for us readers, today.
