#93 - A Pastor and a Priest Walk into a Bar... A Joyful, Curious, and Enlightening Conversation with a Catholic Priest (featuring Father David Michael Moses)
A pastor and a priest walk into a bar... it sounds like a joke? Or to some, even offensive... like an argument waiting to happen. But that's not the case with Father David Michael and myself. We are new to our friendship, but we are committed to showcasing the unity that can still exist between us, first and foremost, as Christians. (Furthermore, we are only a few months apart in age!) Catholics and Protestants have a lot more in common than many think! And at the end of the day, we are both part of the body of Christ and the kingdom of God. However, there is no way around it, we do see some things differently. This was a fantastic conversation where I inquired about some of those things. I also shared with Father David Michael something I believe is closer to Catholics about than some Protestants do. Overall, it was an enriching conversation and I hope you are blessed by it!

#92 - Habits of the Household with Justin Whitmel Earley
Friends, I am so excited to have a conversation with Justin Whitmel Earley. His book, Habits of the Household, is immediately one of my favorite books! The way in which Justin talks about how the story of God and gospel truths influence our habits, rhythms, and liturgies at home from how we wake up, to how we discipline, to how we spend time in the car together, to much more. All I have to say is you need to read this book, but first, tune into this episode as I introduce you to Justin and some big ideas that are unpacked in his book!

#91 - Vocational Singleness, Friendships, and Equipping the Church to Love Gay People (with Pieter Valk of Equip Your Community)
The first episode back in a while and we are not messing around! I found Pieter on Instragram and have been enthralled by the awesome ministry he has been doing. Pieter is a gay Christian who is committed to a biblically traditional sexual ethic (celibacy). What makes Pieter stand out is just how compelling his life is. He is showcasing how the Church can retrieve the power of friendships and restore dignity to those who choose a life of vocational singleness. Listen in for some great insights from my new friend!

#90 - The Surprisingly Easy and Freeing Way to Be Humble (1 Peter, Part 7)
Often when we talk about humility it is discussed in a way that makes it seem unattainable. But what if there was a way to be humble that was surprisingly easy and even freeing? And what if this shows us something awesome about God? Let's lean in on what Peter teaches us about humility and God in this last week of our series in 1 Peter.

#87 - What It Means to Be the "Royal Priesthood" (1 Peter, Part 4)
Honing in on 1 Peter 2:4-10, we look at some language that often comes across as very "churchy," which isn't a bad thing, it just means we probably take for granted the power of what is said and might not actually even know what it means. Through this interactive teaching format, we discuss key things like being a "spiritual building," offering "spiritual sacrifices," and especially, what it means to be the "royal priesthood."

#86 - How We Misunderstand Holiness & Why It Matters (1 Peter, Part 3)
One of the most misunderstood concepts in Christianity is holiness. As we look at this passage in 1 Peter 1 we begin with some groundwork in what it means to be "ransomed" or "redeemed" and then move into some really important coneptions and misconceptions about holiness and how that is relevant to our everyday lives. As mentioned before, these episodes in 1 Peter are taken from a live interactive teaching format so let me know what you think!

#75 - From Spiritual Disciplines to Spiritual Delights!
Many of us, as Christians, feel an obligation to read our Bible, pray, and practice these things that have been traditionally called "spiritual disciplines." But if we are honest, these can feel like chores and it can be difficult to make them a regular part of our lives. If you have felt that way, you will want to listen to this as I share how to go from practicing spiritual disciplines to practicing spiritual delights!

#74 - How to Lead Your Family Around Personalized Values
It has been said: "Direction, not intention, determines destination." In other words, we all are leading our life a certain direction based on a set of values, whether those values be explicitly clear or unclear to us. So, why not be intentional about the values that guide the decisions and direction of our life? Listen in as we talk about what it means to live our life by a set of values, how Scripture speaks to this, and how to actually create a list of personalized, Christ-centered values! #61 - The Crowd Hears; The Disciple Responds (Sermon on the Mount, Part 15)
We conclude the sermon on the mount by looking at Matthew 7:13-29, where Jesus challenges the crowd who has been listening in to respond to the message. We cannot simply admire the teaching, we are called to take action and to build the foundation of our life on our it.

#60 - The Surprising Context of the "Golden Rule" (Sermon on the Mount, Part 14)
Everyone agrees that the "Golden Rule" is worth living by. However, the famous quote from Jesus does not come out of thin air. There is a context to it. Matthew 7:1-12 presents us with the exposition around it. How does this help us better understand this great way to live? Listen in as we talk about the source and power of being able to live out the "Golden Rule."

#59 - How to Have Meaningful Conversations in Polarizing Times
We take a single-week break from our series on the Sermon on the Mount to address an important topic. All of us are aware of how polarizing almost any topic is right now. Whether a conversation of faith, or politics, or almost anything else. Here, in this episode, I am not interested in bringing up any particular issue, instead I want to challenge us to be people who think critically and engage responsibly in conversations. I want to give you some original thoughts on how I have meaningful conversations with those who I disagree with, or vice versa. The key here is not that we back away from hard conversations, but that we make sure we have done quality research, understand the other side, represent them well, and focus on the ideas. More will be said, so tune in!

#58 - Why Do You Worry? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 13)

#57 - What Do You See? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 12)
What does it mean that the eye is the lamp of the body? Matthew 6:19-24 presents a triad contrast of two's: two treasures, two eyes, and two masters. The journey of wholeness involves making sure we find ourselves on the right side of the contrasts.

#56 - Praying to the God Who Hears (Sermon on the Mount, Part 11)
Why do you sometimes pray lengthy prayers? There is certainly nothing wrong with praying for great lengths of time. However, WHY we do and what we believe about God as we approach Him in prayer makes all the difference. Matthew 6:7-15 is an insightful passage which begins by contrasting how the pagan "gods" of the Graeco-Roman world listen, versus how our Father listens to our prayers. The differences cannot be exaggerated!

#55 - Who Do You Do It For? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 10)
Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reasons? In Matthew 6:1-6 Jesus challenges our motivation why we do something and, more specifically, who we do it for. After all, our audience will always reward us, so who is our audience and what does that reveal about the authenticity of our righteousness?

#54 - Be Whole as Your Heavenly Father is Whole (Sermon on the Mount, Part 9)
Turn the other cheek? Pray for our enemies? Everything that is said in Matthew 5:38-48 sounds too idealistic and not practical to actually live out. Or is that the case? What if Jesus was inviting us into a greater level of "wholeness" as we reverse retaliation and repay our enemies with love? Join us as we adventure into one of the most difficult passages in the Bible in terms of putting into action the ethics of our Lord!

#53 - The Greater Righteousness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 8)
What does it mean to have a righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees? Is this even feasible? What if it was? What is Jesus getting at, here? As we look at Matthew 5:20-37, we see how Jesus begins to unpack what this "greater righteousness" is. The true righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees. Today we address what Jesus says about anger and lust, with far more implications than can be summarized in such a quick description!

#52 - How Being "Salt" and "Light" Connects Us to the Whole Story! (Sermon on the Mount, Part 7)
Have you ever heard idiomatic terms or phrases that needed explaining? The terms "salt" and "light" are terms that need a deeper exploration. As we look at Matthew 5:13-20, we see how Jesus calls His followers "salt" and "light," terms that connect them to the greater story of the Bible. His point? Well, you'll have to listen in to find out! I reference quite a few passages today, (in this order): Numbers 18:19, 2 Chronicles 13:5, Exodus 30:35, Leviticus 2:13, & Isaiah 42:6.

#51 - Purity of Heart and Peacemaking (Sermon on the Mount, Part 6)
Being pure in heart does not equate to being perfect in heart. As we look at Matthew 5:8 we see how, when we cross-reference it with Psalm 51, is not about never doing anything wrong again, but about a heart condition that rhythmically returns to God in repentance, knowing that God is the only one who can purify and renew our heart so that we can stand pure before Him. In this episode, we conclude the macarisms and go all the way through verse 10. (Technically verses 11-12 are part of the macarisms as a continual thought on the eighth macarism.) Keep listening in the following weeks as we continue exploring the Sermon on the Mount!

Mercy: it is so much more than how many of us narrowly think of it! #48 - The Counter-Intuitive Way to Take Over the World (Sermon on the Mount, Part 3)
What do all world powers throughout history? Well, they certainly did not rise to rule the world by means of meek methods. Yet, in Matthew 5:5 Jesus congratulates the gentle-spirited because they will inherit the earth. How can this be? And what does this mean? Join us as we explore the counter-intuitive way to take over the world according to Jesus!

#47 - Happy Are the ... Unhappy ... ? (Sermon on the Mount, Part 2)
In the second macarism (Matthew 5:4), Jesus congratulates those who are grieving as the ones who have it figured out. Why? A few questions provoke this... What kind of mourning are we talking about? How does mourning lend itself to experiencing God's comfort? And in what way does God deal with the very things that cause us grief? Listen in as we go in-depth on the second macarism in Jesus's paradoxical path to true happiness!

#46 - Spiritual Poverty & the Paradox of Happiness (Sermon on the Mount, Part 1)
Does the world really know the best way to live? The Sermon on the Mount presents a counter-intuitive way of being that produces true flourishing. We begin this series by looking at Matthew 5:1-3 and how the paradox of happiness is presented as a posture of the heart, specifically, recognizing that we are spiritual beggars before God. Listen in as we explore how Jesus connects spiritual poverty to being "happy" or "blessed," and how this results in receiving the kingdom of heaven.

#45 - Understanding and Delighting in God as Trinity (with Abdu Murray of RZIM)
The word "Trinity" is a single word compacting a robust truth about the nature of God being one Deity in three persons. Unfortunately, many Christians have a hard time explaining (let alone understanding) one of the core doctrines of the faith. Enter Abdu. Abdu Murray finds the subject of the Trinity his favorite. As a former Muslim, this was one he used to get Christian's stuck on, now, he (rightly) sees it as one of the most fundamental and distinct doctrines of Christianity. Listen in as Abdu and I provide insights into how to understand and delight in the Trinity!

#44 - God Wants You to Be Both Happy and Holy
There is a common phrase you have probably heard in or around church: "God doesn’t want you to be happy; He wants you to be holy." But is that true? I don't think so. Listen in to today's episode as I explain how there is an intrinsic relationship, and even inseparable relationship, between holiness and happiness. #43 - The Center of the Poem; The Heart of the Book of Lamentations
When we are venting about genuine hardship, the last thing we need to be told is to "look on the bright side!" Lamentations is an important and often overlooked book of the Bible. Now, our circumstances certainly are not parallel to that of Lamentations, but the message of Lamentations is still beneficial for us today. How we read this book gives us insight and understanding of how to focus on hope, while also walking through difficult times.

#41 - "Faith" as Allegiance (with Professor and Author, Matthew W. Bates)

#39 - The Return of Jesus Will Be Like a Royal Parade, Not a Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
I cannot tell you how many times I encounter people talking about "the rapture." It is so engrained in some Christian's minds, but is that what the message of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 really is about? Furthermore, is that really what we are hoping for when we anticipate the return of Christ? I don't think so. Listen in as we go verse by verse through this passage as we remember what the hope of the second coming entails!
Also, (while not discussed in the episode) I think it is important to note that "rapture theology" only came into existence in the 1800's. No one believed this in church history prior. For a quick video on the history of rapture theology, check out this 5-minute YouTube video from Dr. Ben Witherington: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_cVXdr8mVs&t=133s
Here is a summary of the three key things we wrap up with at the end. According to 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the return of Jesus will encompass:
The Return of Christ to forever reign in a new world with His people; The Resurrection of the body and all of creation; The Reunion of believers in Jesus, dead and alive.Like the podcast? #32 - How Can We Be Full of the Spirit But Continually Filled by the Spirit?
Scripture is clear that when we give our lives to Jesus we receive His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. As post-Pentecost, new covenant belivers, we are filled with the fullness of God's temple presence (1 Cor. 3:16). In light of that, why does Paul command believers to be continually filled by the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18? How can we be full of the Holy Spirit but also continually filled by the Spirit? Is this a contradiction? Or is there a rich paradox waiting to be explored! I believe the latter. Let's explore this great question!

#31 - The Fire that Burns in You (Acts 2:3-4, 17-18; Exodus 19:17-18)
In a very passionate episode, we unpack one more thing about Pentecost is what made it so counter-intuitive for its day. Listen in as we talk about how the temple presence of God, the fire of God, has left the temple!

#30 - The Untold Story of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-5, 1:6-8)
Welcome to part 2 of our Acts series, where we seek to explore major themes and passages in the book of Acts. Few episodes are as difficult to communicate as this one. On one side of things, this is an eye-opening dialogue on how Pentecost serves as a major hinge between phases of the biblical story; and yet, it is almost like trying to summarize the story of Israel at one event. And that is what makes Pentecost so profound... the single event showcases the Jewish believers in Jesus as the true Israel who have the honor of ushering in the new humanity of the new covenant. Listen in for a thought-provoking conversation as we explore the untold story of Pentecost!

#29 - When a Sequel Get's it Right! (Acts 1)
Today, we kick off the series in Acts! Acts is Luke's sequel to the Gospel of Luke, and unlike most sequels in the movie world today, Acts is a sequel done well! As we will see, the book of Acts answers the question of "What's next?" for us as followers of Jesus.

#27 - The Life-Giving Wisdom of Sabbath (with Dr. Matthew Sleeth of sabbathliving.org)
The Sabbath is a 24 hour period in which we cease from the toil of work to simply enjoy the life given to us. Is the Sabbath still applicable today? Listen in as Dr. Matthew Sleeth and I try to persuade YOU that Sabbath is not legalistic law, but life-giving wisdom.

#26 - Flowers, Weeds, and the Power of Habits
The phrase: "Don't pull weeds without planting flowers" has been deeply influential to me. Today, I share my candid, off the script insights on the topic of habits. As Christians, we should recognize the power of habits in how the rhythms, routines, and habits are forming a lifestyle, and even identity, of who we are becoming. Healthy habits form healthy people. Listen in as we talk about the journey of how healthy habits start as a duty, become a discipline, and (if we stick with it) they become a delight!

#24 - Let's Abandon the Phrase "Everything Happens For a Reason"
Some phrases and cliches may be trendy in culture or even in the Church. But does that make them true? Of course not! Popular opinion does not make something true or false. Phrases (and the beliefs behind them) have to be thought through and examined. Today, we discuss how the phrase "everything happens for a reason" is not biblical, not helpful, and should be abandoned altogether.

#23 - What is the Biblical View of Hell? (With Chris Date of RethinkingHell.com)
For most of my life, I did not even know other perspectives on the topic of "hell" existed! In today's episode, I speak with Chris Date, of rethinkinghell.com. After my own study in the Bible on this subject, listening to many debates (some Chris was part of), and reading books on the subject, I came to the same conclusion as Chris; that the position, known as "Conditional Immortality" (aka "Annihilationism"), best represents the biblical view of hell.
Listen in with an open mind. We are not trying to cause division, we are simply trying to spur conversation. While this discussion may not be the most fun, it is an important topic.

#18 - The Economy of Grace: Equality of Reward & Status in the Kingdom of God
I have heard people say things like: "Billy Graham was so faithful, so influential as a Christian, he will definitely have a greater heavenly reward than me. He will have a high position of authority in God's kingdom." But is this biblically true? Will there be degrees of reward and status in the next life? Join me as I refute the misconceptions and make a compelling case for equality of reward and status amongst believers. God's economy of grace and reward is not like our's. We live, speak, breathe, and give Gospel because we are filled with Gospel. Our obedience and good works are about appreciation and gratitude, not promotion and competition.

#17 - Even Greater Than Eden (Reimagining Heaven, Part 6)
Revelation 21-22 presents more than Eden restored, the new creation is even greater than eden! The shocking contrasts between the first and the final eden encourage us that the hope we hold is contains more privilege and more responsibility than we expect. #16 - Returning to a Place We Have Never Been (Reimagining Heaven, Part 5)
If you have grown up in the Church you have probably heard about the "streets of gold," but have you ever been curious to know what that means? Today's episode covers Revelation 21:5-8, and then we also talk about what the Bible says our resurrection bodies will be like in the new creation. We will not be raised to eternal life disembodied, no way! We will have a resurrected, glorified, new... body. This is central to the Christian hope.

#14 - The New Earth (Reimagining Heaven, Part 3)
We have been talking about how God's endgame plan is not to discard his creation, but to make a new creation: a new universe, even a new earth! Today's episode covers Revelation 21:1-4, which is about the future hope of all who trust in Jesus. What will the new earth be like? We get a few details here. What John chooses to use as symbolism is quite surprising! Get ready for a great adventure in a great episode!

BONUS Content - How to Read the Book of Revelation Responsibly
In this bonus episode, I want to briefly introduce you to a few reasons why we can't read the book of Revelation the same way we would read some other books of the Bible. To read it literally is to ignore the literary genre the message is written in. For example, we wouldn't watch a Sci-Fi movie with the same expectations and rules that we would impose on a documentary. Why is that? Because these films are two completely different genres. Hopefully this bonus episode helps make us aware with what we are dealing with when we read the most extraordinary letter found in Scripture!

#13 - The Event in Heaven That Changed Everything on Earth (Reimagining Heaven, Part 2)
Revelation Chapters 4-5 presents a single vision of "Heaven." So, what is this look behind the scenes show us? Well, I'll tell you that it does not answer any of our questions that we ask about Heaven. What does it mean, then? What is the purpose of this vision when we enter the text without imposing our own agenda on it?
We are going to see how this vision of Heaven does show us something that changes everything about the trajectory of earth, and continues the premise that we stated last week: Heaven is less like a home, and more like a train. #11 - The Most Important Words Joshua Ever Uttered (Joshua 24:14-15)
In this final episode of our series in Joshua, we cover what is the most important message Joshua ever spoke! We are looking at two verses from Joshua's final address to the people of God. As we sit as some of the listeners, we quickly discover that this message transcends time and is for every generation. The underlying question Joshua lays out before the people is the question we must answer today. This episode has many quote-worthy moments so get ready to take notes.

#10 - The Old Testament as Our Heritage & Our Role in Environmentalism (2-Part Ft. Dr. Sandra Richter)
In this packed episode I have a wonderful conversation with Old Testament Professor, Dr. Sandra Richter, who quickly has become a friend. This two-part conversation is lengthy, yet a rewarding one.
In our time together we tackle two discussion topics:
1) First, we clear the air with all of the confusion regarding the Old Testament. Isn't it an outdated book for those who are ethnically Jewish? Shouldn't we merely appreciate it as history? Dr. Richter and I beg to differ! If you are a believer (no matter your ethnic background) the Old Testament is your story, too! We both find ourselves specializing in the study of the Old Testament, so get ready for an engaging conversation in which we argue for the continual relevance and continuity that the Old Testament has for us today!
2) Second, (starting at 53 minutes, 18 seconds) we talk about Dr. Richter's upcoming book on environmentalism. You will discover that Dr. Richter's mission is so much more than just saving the trees; it is about saving lives! And it is more a theological discussion than a political one. Dr. Richter and I argue that the topic of environmentalism is an unavoidable one if we want to take our role seriously in bearing the image of God on earth.
We appreciate Dr. Richter and want to support her. Check out her resources available!

#9 - Keeping the Promise; Carrying the Name (Joshua 9-11)
What does your word mean to you? When you give a promise or an oath does that stand through the storm of life's circumstances? What if the oath was made under false pretensions and imperfect motives? Joshua 9-11 make for a great story! I walked away from this episode incredibly challenged in how to better "carry the name" of our God! We learn a lot about what representing God means in a messy world with messy circumstances through this chapters... so settle in; open your Bible; and lots embark on this week's adventure!

#8 - Seven, Sabbath, & The Strangest Military Strategy Ever (Joshua 6-8)
The story of Jericho is one of the most famous in the book of Joshua. But don't let the commonality fool you, this is a strange story! I have never seen such a bizarre military strategy. So, what is God trying to communicate through this?
Let me say that I was surprised how much these chapters ministered to me. I will never read these three chapters the same!

#7 - When You Are Invited onto Holy Ground (Joshua 5:13-15)
This is a strange part of the story... From the strange being Joshua encounters, to having to take off his sandals because he stood on "holy ground," this passage can feel out of place. What is the point of this?
Let's see what we can learn from Joshua's "holy ground" moment. I bet you'll never look at the removal of sandals to step on holy ground the same again!

#6 - The Reward is in the River (Joshua 3-4)
Do you know what the arch nemesis of faith is? Um... oh... wait... what was it again? Gotcha!! Forgetfulness is the enemy of faith. Therefore, the friend of faith is memory. Commemoration is so important for our spiritual journey in recounting God's faithfulness in the grand story as shown in the Bible and also in our own lives.
Joshua 3-4 will be our text today. And we will see how the crossing of the Jordan river was no ordinary thing. And there is something special about the stones that they grab. By the end of this episode I bet you'll understand what I mean when I tell you that there are more rivers with more stones to be found. And so the adventure continues!

#5 - The Faith of a Prostitute (Joshua 2)
Today we will learn more about what it means to have the courage to trust. And we will learn from the most unlikely of people… a prostitute! In the story of Rahab we see that before any conquest takes place in the narrative of Joshua, mercy gets precedence. Listen in as I express how baffling, yet befitting, this story is in the grand narrative of the Bible. This goes to show that God's preference is mercy, not judgment.

Last episode we concluded with highlighting what made Joshua and Caleb such a great leaders to take the people into the promised land. They had what the Bible called "a different spirit" about them. I suggest that the "different spirit" was the courage to trust God, despite the obstacles in their way. Okay, cool. So we should desire to have the courage to trust. But how do we cultivate that? How do we cultivate the courage to trust God? Ah! That is the question.
In this episode, we look at Joshua 1:5-9, and the fascinating literary structure in it, which reveals the answer to our question. Today we discuss the key, nestled at the center of the chiasm; the key of how to cultivate courageous trust. Join is in the 21 day challenge proposed at the end of the episode! Here is the link to view the color-coated chiasm that we discuss on part of this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SkWUKJLrRuQqqCouB7IKAAlS2l7lZOSgnEOFVcNS2Ss/edit

#3 - A Place to Call Home (Joshua 1:1-4)
As we open up the text of Joshua it becomes clear that this "promised land" is REALLY important to these people. But why? What is the big deal about this plot of land? And why should I care about Joshua's quest to take the promised land? This is what we want to tackle on today's episode. And hey, if you think we are just talking ancient history, you will be surprised how encouraging this is for us, today!

#2 - Enough is Enough (Intro to Joshua)
We begin a series of episodes dedicated to exploring the book of Joshua! But like most books of the Bible, somethings have to be prefaced...
In this case, the elephant in the room with this book of the Bible is the violence and war due to it being a conquest narrative. Many Christians struggle with how to reconcile the love of God with the command to go eradicate this plot of land of its current inhabitants. How do we respond?
This episode contains six points of clarification, which help us reframe how we think of the conquest narrative of Joshua so that we can appreciate the message of the book for us readers, today.
