Understanding Fasting and Weight Loss over 40
Ever thought about (or even tried) a fasting diet for weight loss since you turned 40 or 50? How did you find it? Did you see the results you were looking for? Get ready for a deep dive into fasting diets, and more specifically, how they impact women over 40.
Today, we embark on a fascinating journey into various fasting approaches, from the 5:2 diet, 16/8 or 14/10 intermittent fasting, to severe calorie restriction five days a month. We'll examine the research into the efficacy of these diets, laying bare the good, the bad, and the ugly. Spoiler alert, while the 5:2 diet reigns supreme for the fasting diets for weight loss, it merely offers up to 5% reduction in body weight, and that too hits a plateau after six months.
Shifting gears, we'll dissect the influence of fasting on hormone levels, and why it may not be the silver bullet you're searching for in the realms of weight loss or hormone balancing.
Be prepared for some hard truths as we highlight who should steer clear of fasting regimes - think individuals with blood sugar issues, Crohn's disease, or a history of disordered eating.
But, it's not all gloom and doom.
There's light at the end of the tunnel with the 12/12 window of eating, a possible alternative to radical fasting and the power of personalised nutrition. I'll outline how this approach can help balance hormones, optimise sleep, and manage stress.
