One thing that we see quite often is that people will spend a lot of time at the gym doing cardiovascular exercise instead of doing any type of resistance training. Resistance training often gives you more bang for your buck in calorie expenditure as well as longer term metabolism rate increase.
The second big thing that we see at the gym is that people will work out a great intense workout and then use that hard work as an excuse to overindulge in a meal, a dessert, beverages. Our hard work will be cancelled out by a highly calorie dense meal that is being excused away as a reward. Try a non-caloric reward like a massage or a new outfit instead.
The third biggest mistake that we often see is a failure to have a plan. Like the old saying goes, "Fail to Plan is a Plan to fail". It's very true. Without a plan, we are sure to miss the mark.
