The Survivor by Amanda Blackwood

The Survivor by Amanda Blackwood

By Amanda Blackwood presents: The Trauma Survivors

For the first two seasons of my podcast I focused on what human trafficking is and on my own story of survival. Through my journey I’ve learned that there are thousands of others who have survived traumatic experiences and have written about them, too! It’s time to put a spotlight on all the incredible people I’ve met on this journey. Stay tuned for some of the most amazing people you’ve never heard of, and maybe a few you have!

Jimmy Rumsey's parents were on the run when he was born. Now this author explores his past to help others.

Jimmy Rumsey's parents were on the run when he was born. Now this author explores his past to help others.

When he was born, his father was on the run from the law because of a violent altercation in the US. That was the perfect set up for a traumatic childhood and young adult life. But after a nearly fatal incident when his children were very young, this courageous man decided it was time to learn how to fight back in healthy ways. Now he works with at-risk (or at-promise) youth to help them make better choices than he did as a child himself.  If you survived trauma and wrote your own story of survival, please let me know if you'd be interested in being interviewed! Miranda Pacchiana, MSW is a personal coach,  writer, survivor, and host of the podcast Truth and Consequences:  Navigating the aftermath of trauma. She worked with homelessness so much that her unique perspective might change yours.

When Nicole Hanson interviewed on my podcast back in December, it was a magical day. She was such a shining light that I immediately bought a copy of her book for a friend, and told my husband I wanted one for myself (which he gave me for Christmas). But she did something else, too. Nicole Hanson spoke with a young lady by the name of Leigh Lincoln who had worked so extensively with assistance in finding support, housing, and basic needs for those facing homelessness.  She also assisted with first-time home buyer programs, community outreach programs, and neighborhood task forces. Then she wrote a fantastic book from the perspective of a homeless woman. Her heart changed the minds of others, and it might touch your life, too.  If you survived trauma and wrote your own story of survival, please let me know if you'd be interested in being interviewed! A phycology student was run over by a car, and his life changed forever, but Joe Reidy overcame the odds to survive.

Joe was eighteen-years-old and two weeks into college studying to become a psychologist, when a nursing student changed his life in the blink of an eye. For a series of seven years, Joe experienced mini-seizures, and finally two massive Grand Mal seizures on Christmas day 2019, during which he flat-lined. Joe has died three times so far in his life, and his struggle to overcome the nightmare he found himself in has been nothing less than harrowing. He had to give up on his college dreams, redirect his life, learn to speak all over again, and (with the help of inventor Ross Lilley), he's continuing his rehab in learning to walk once more. Joe's book "My Nightmare... And How I Woke From It" has been helping so many other people, but he's gone beyond that, too. This amazing young man and his father teamed up for some original music on YouTube. I've included the links below. The music is set to a slideshow and you can watch Joe's journey yourself.  Find Joe Reidy's book on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/My-Nightmare-How-I-Woke/dp/1940244145 Check out the ORIGINAL music and slideshows he and his father put together!  What Love Can Be: https://youtu.be/dmLGEPNxiMA One More Turn: https://youtu.be/NBeU7EJowVc Norm Reidy's music can be found at: https://normanreidy.bandcamp.com/ ---------------------------------------------------- If you survived trauma and wrote your own story of survival, please let me know if you'd be interested in being interviewed! Two brain surgeries, three cancers - how is Keith Guernsey still alive? He says it's a positive mental attitude.

Two brain surgeries, three cancers - how is Keith Guernsey still alive? He says it's a positive mental attitude.  Keith confesses that he grew up in a suburban paradise, twelve miles from downtown Boston in an upper middle class neighborhood. He said he was entitled and spoiled, and it seemed as though his surroundings cultivated a party-boy as he wandered through life from 25 to 44, but meeting a WWWF (he'll explain what that is) changed his whole life. Somehow life threw some obstacles in his way, and even after overcoming trauma from cancer, brain surgery, morbid obesity, and more, Keith maintained a sense of humor and a loving heart. He's also a Myeloma coach and an Imerman Angel now. Wait until you hear him read part of chapter 7 in his book. "Everyone needs a laugh."  Find Keith on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3AKeith+D+Guernsey&s=relevancerank&text=Keith+D+Guernsey&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1 Follow Keith on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/keith.guernsey.50 If you survived trauma and wrote your own story of survival, please let me know if you'd be interested in being interviewed! Jack Roney - Real Life Detective

Jack Roney - Real Life Detective

At first it might sound like something from a 1940's radio show, but as amazing as that would be, this is even better. Jack spent 33 years as part of the police force in Australia, most recently as a child protection detective. With the encouragement of family and friends, he retired from the job he loved to pursue the passion he had for writing.  As he says so eloquently in this episode, he couldn't be a detective and a crime writer at the same time - that would be seen as a conflict of interest. Jack was also a police consultant for the ABC television series “Harrow” and now offers workshops and personal insight into the real world of policing for others interesting in writing crime fiction. His fascinating history includes moments that would cause a weaker person to crumble. He found a way to release emotions he didn't know were pent up when he began to tell his story through the eyes of a fallible detective named Jerrod O'Connor. Homeless and abused in childhood, Tyler Wittkofski has beaten all the odds.

Homeless and abused in childhood, Tyler Wittkofski has beaten all the odds.

Tyler grew up homeless and abused by his father for the first ten years of his life. Instead of the comfortable beds like most kids are accustomed to, he slept on cold benches and in hotel rooms. His father was verbally and physically abusive toward him. Tyler was constantly made to feel like a lesser person. This led way to quite a few mental health disorders that stem from that kind of trauma, but this remarkable young man has overcome so much to write his story and to be here with us today.  Follow Tyler Wittkofsky online https://www.facebook.com/TylerWittkofsky instagram.com/TylerWittkofsky https://twitter.com/TylerWittkofsky If you know someone who survived trauma and wrote their own story of survival, please have them reach out to the podcast with their contact information by emailing  AuthorAmandaBlackwood@gmail.com . Early abandonment, traumatic death, and young assault never stood a chance at beating this incredible woman, SHARON DOUGLIN.

Early abandonment, traumatic death, and young assault never stood a chance at beating this incredible woman, SHARON DOUGLIN.

When she was just a young girl, Sharon's parents sent her to live with her grandparents. Feelings of abandonment swelled within her, and her father's death when she was still young didn't help. But the worst of it all came when she was assaulted by their family pastor only a year after losing her father. Now this incredible woman has not only overcome the past, but she's fought back to have a truly meaningful life helping others with her own ministry. Sharon Douglin is a force to be reckoned with and she really was "Made for More."

Hypnotherapist, Birth Trauma specialist, and author, Jami Christine

TRIGGER WARNING: In this episode I'm talking with a trauma survivor about their history and how they found writing to be healing. Jami Christine was planning an at home birth for her first child. She had an overwhelming fear of hospitals, and a deep desire to give birth naturally. Unfortunately, life often pokes holes in the best made plans. Her son got stuck while Jami was in labor and she was sent to the hospital anyway. Jami found herself shutting down emotionally and mentally, and everything she did NOT want to happen, started to happen. She completely shut down emotionally and found herself completely disconnected during the c-section. Things only got worse from there for a while. Welcome to the show, Jami. Interview with military veteran and mom, Jasmine Shouse

Interview with military veteran and mom, Jasmine Shouse

Jasmine is a personal hero of mine and I don't believe you'll be surprised when I tell you why. Not only did she survive unspeakable assaults while in the military, but this incredible woman did a lot of counter trafficking work when she was in the military, too. She worked with Intel mostly, so she didn't get to talk to many of the survivors. She's struggled with self-hate and despair thinking about the ones they couldn't get to in time - which I can certainly relate to. It's called survivor's guilt for me. I call it "Schindler's Syndrome" in the case of incredible people like Jasmine. No matter how many people someone saves, they always believe there could be just one more. But a hero is a hero, and Jasmine, you are incredible. On behalf of survivors around the world, thank you for everything you've done. WE LOVE YOU. And thank you for being here with me today. Custom Justice - Chapter 43, Night Out

Richard was so happy with everything I'd done for him while he was away that he wanted to treat me to a night out in Glasgow with his sister and her husband. Custom Justice - Chapter 42, The Burst of a Plan

I developed another cyst, and while it wasn't enough to stop Richard from demanding my performance with his guests, it was enough to scare one in particular away finally. As much as it caused me intense pain, it also caused immense relief each time it burst. But that wasn't the only thing that burst into action. I finally developed a plan and started to put the wheels in motion.  *TRIGGER WARNING* I Do discuss difficult situations, such as forced sexual encounters, rape, molestation, abuse, suicide attempts and more.  SEASON THREE STARTS SEPTEMBER 2ND! Custom Justice - Chapter 41, Cornbread Suicide

Custom Justice - Chapter 41, Cornbread Suicide

From baking for his family to a trip to Ireland, I had determined I was no longer fit to live. It was such a terrible extreme within my emotions that I didn't know how to process what I was feeling. I knew I wanted to die, and I knew I didn't want to be identifiable once my body was found. Nobody would care, and if I just disappeared maybe Richard would live in fear of my coming back to haunt him. But how would I go about ending my own life in such a way?  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. SEASON THREE STARTS SEPTEMBER 2ND! Custom Justice - Chapter 40, Caroline the Crooked One

Custom Justice - Chapter 40, Caroline the Crooked One

So much of the abuse that happened in Scotland has been shoved into the recesses of my memory as though nothing more than a bad dream, but this night - this one particular night - I was shown a little kindness and so the entire night exists in my memory as a living nightmare. It gives me the worst of the flashbacks, all because I was shown some kindness in the middle of the worst abuse. It was nothing of the sort. But the kindness came from the most unlikely of sources.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 39, A Punch to the Kidneys

Custom Justice - Chapter 39, A Punch to the Kidneys

I'd been in Scotland less than a month and already was trying to find ways to get back to the USA. I didn't have my passport or my driver's license, but I could con Richard into giving them to me for a couple days at least. I didn't have much money, but what I did have I would spend on an emergency flight home. I didn't have my health, but I was willing to do what it took to make the flight - until things took a turn for the worse and I ended up needing medical assistance. What would happen?  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 38, When The Nightmare Began

Custom Justice - Chapter 38, When The Nightmare Began

I was only there a short time before he'd taken away my passport, driver's license, and debit card for 'safe keeping' and I didn't even recognize it as a form of control. Then things got ugly. He started watching his live porn again. He started frequenting the swingers websites again. Eventually his addiction was getting the better of him and he would no longer be satisfied with just watching it on a computer. Custom Justice - Chapter 37, Welcome to Scotland

I never imagined that I'd be landing in the midst of a snowstorm where I'd need a parka and only arrive with a leather motorcycle jacket, but there I was. Custom Justice - Chapter 36, Preparing for Flight

Custom Justice - Chapter 36, Preparing for Flight

I couldn't WAIT to get to Scotland, to the waiting arms of the man I loved. Strategically, just like my great escape plans back in chapter 20 (titled "A Reunion of Sorts" if you remember), I planned my vanishing with such precision I'd have made an international spy network proud. By the time I left it was as if I never even existed at all. I didn't know for quite some time, but I guess my boss went by my apartment the first day I was missing in order to check on me since he couldn't reach me. When he found the place with the blinds open and completely vacant, he knew something was up. (I don't mention that part in the podcast though.) I absolutely vanished into thin air. I'd had plenty of practice over the years, as often as I'd run away and moved since I was 15 years old. This was nothing new. The excitement of being engaged and having a marriage visa certainly was new though.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 35, Catastrophe

Custom Justice - Chapter 35, Catastrophe

*TRIGGER WARNING* This podcast is about human trafficking.  While receiving the silent treatment from Richard, I was devastated. I believed I'd never hear from him again. But then the unthinkable happened, and a man I didn't know tried his best to force me into oncoming traffic on my way home from work one night. Realizing I could have been killed, Richard finally began to speak to me again. What he said was beyond reason. I look back now and realize how twisted and depraved he really was, to have gone from one extreme to another.  This week's episode art is the damage done to my vehicle in the collision I describe.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 34, The First of the Photos

*TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice.  This chapter covers the first time Richard took photos of the incidences I was being forced into. A little hotel in Long Beach, California was home to a nightmare for me. Five martinis in and I was vomiting in the bushes, but that didn't stop Richard from marching me up to a hotel room where a pilot invited us in. When the man handed money to Richard, my entire life changed once again.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 33, Drover's Inn

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
Steeped in history along the side of Ben Lomond, the Drover's Inn stood in its opulent magnificence. It was over 300 years old and had been a resting place to some of the most famous Scots of all time. I couldn't believe I'd be spending the night there myself. I never imagined I'd be standing beside Richard, lager in hand, belting out traditional Scottish songs I didn't know all that well.  Two of the songs mentioned are added to the end of this episode so you can see what they actually sound like. They're beautiful.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 32, Speak Ill of the Dead

Custom Justice - Chapter 32, Speak Ill of the Dead

Dealing with Clark's death reminded me of how I had to deal with my own death. In the year 2000 after my son was born I was rushed into an emergency surgery where I died three times in the process. As frightening as that is, I wasn't frightened at all. I was perfectly fine, because my grandfather was there showing me all the good stuff that had happened in my life. It was truly amazing. The photo for this week is of a painting I created in an attempt to explain that dream visually.  **TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 31, The Death of Clark

Custom Justice - Chapter 31, The Death of Clark

I had no freaking clue what I was feeling when I heard about the death of my ex-husband. I didn't know how to process my confusing emotions that ran the gamut from guilty to glorified, from angry to absolved. Figuring out my next steps and if I could ever find open communication with my son would be something I'd need help with, primarily from my brand new therapist. She was amazing, and she was able to read into things more than I could have imagined. Following her advice would be a massive challenge though.  *TRIGGER WARNING* Things are starting to get really ugly in the world of Custom Justice. Custom Justice - Chapter 30, Realizations of Trafficking

Custom Justice - Chapter 30, Realizations of Trafficking

I still couldn't wrap my brain around what human trafficking actually was. I started reading statistics, but at first they were still just statistics. They weren't faces. They weren't people. Then, through the amazing groups I was working with in Colorado, I was able to meet several other survivors of trafficking and they were no longer just numbers. They were faces and names and survivors. They were people who would become my friends. They were incredible souls who, like me, lived through Hell and somehow survived. But what exactly did all of that mean?

Custom Justice - Chapter 29, the Last of Edinburgh

Custom Justice - Chapter 29, the Last of Edinburgh

William Wallace was a real man, but the movie Braveheart certainly was not based on real events. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't visited the Wallace Monument in Scotland while on that vacation. It was a stunning structure. Afterward I received a brief informal education on the differences of language between Scotland and American English. Some of the everyday polite words we use here in the USA are some of the most vile, disgusting words you could possibly use in Scotland, especially when used to describe a person. I'd learn that all too well and experience that sort of verbal abuse the following year.

Custom Justice - Chapter 28, Prisoners of War

Custom Justice - Chapter 28, Prisoners of War

Waking up with a hangover was a new experience and Richard taught me all about the local cures for such a malady that day. I was also quite successful in tricking myself into thinking the stranger in the hotel room was something that hadn't happened the night before. Eager as ever, I went on about my way, and we went to explore the castle. I saw things that would blow my mind and leave me speechless, and would later serve as a reminder of what my own life would become. The photo was from that morning.

Custom Justice - Chapter 27, Edinburgh Hangover

Wandering around Edinburgh was incredible. Richard drank entirely too much for me to keep up, and even trying left me feeling as though I were lost in a fog. We wandered from one street to another, one pub to another, and one ancient building to another. We found some of the most incredible places that sent chills up and down our spines. Then, at the end of the evening, I knew it wasn't just alcohol I was feeling, and we weren't alone in that hotel room. How was I going to get out of that mess?

Custom Justice - Chapter 26, The Best Made Plans

I couldn't believe I was finally in Scotland after so many years of wanting to go and thinking it would never happen. And though I knew everyone around me was speaking English, it certainly didn't sound like it. Something needed to be done with my ears so that I'd understand that accent!

Custom Justice - Chapter 25, The Beginning of the End

When Richard and I reconnected, he knew all the right things to say. There was no possibly way that I could have seen through him extravagant love letters, straight to what his true intentions were. I was willing to do whatever it took to see things through this time. Somehow I felt that if everything else had failed, there had to be a reason, and that reason had to be that man. Surely I was supposed to be with him. I had no warning that he was a predator of the worst kind, and the next two years would be spent in constant survival mode.

Custom Justice - Chapter 24, My First Home

I clawed my way out of ruin, one step at a time. It never would have been possible without working long hours, pouring my all into my job, sacrificing any social life, and somehow making some amazing friends along the way. I was truly motivated in a way I don't think I've been forced to be since. It left me exhausted and spent, but incredibly grateful and humbled. By the time I managed to land where I wanted and needed to be, I was only too grateful to sleep on a floor with my cat and a large stack of cardboard boxes. But how long would that last?

My new place was a disastrous paradise, much like my life had been. Eventually having been stripped of everything left me only wanting to improve everything so much more. I became extremely ambitious yet again, searching to find my goals and achieve the impossible. Part of me doubted that I could do it, but most of me didn't even have time to be concerned with that sort of insignificant detail.  My cat deserved a better life.

I wasn't there a matter of hours and I was already itching to leave. When I found out about how my cat had been treated one day while I was at work, I got to work immediately, hatching a plan. But I needed help to make it happen. Would I be able to recruit the help I needed?

Custom Justice - Chapter 21, Again and Again

It seemed as though I might be destined for a 'do over' sort of life. Just about the time I started to find myself on my feet, the rug would be yanked out from beneath me. I still trusted too blindly, and when something seemed too good to be true, it usually turned out to be exactly that. When I lost my 6 figure income job I was never qualified to do and ended up in retail, I thought that was the worst thing that could happen to me. Then, after adopting a kitten, the man I was engaged to marry told me that I needed to find somewhere else to go.

Custom Justice - Chapter 20, A Reunion of Sorts

Naomi wanted me to talk more about how I reunited with Richard, but instead I became sidetracked with wanting to talk about how I escaped a different abusive relationship. Talking about my second escape from Bill became more easy to talk about than Richard because of the type of abuse used. Naomi tried to reign me back in but I still just wasn't ready to talk about the horrors more recent. Diary entries from 2006 surfaced to complete this chapter, reiterating word for word what I was thinking, feeling and doing to manage my life while under the misguided control of someone who claimed to have loved me.

I loved Chris with all my heart, but things went sideways much faster than I could have predicted. Something I don't discuss in this episode is that his mother also accused me of having an affair and the two of them conspired to leave her husband and me behind, the two of them disappearing together. I didn't wait for that to happen.

Custom Justice - Chapter 18, Make it count

I found the world of online dating to be much more interesting than the neglectful relationship I left Arkansas for. In a single day I met both Richard and my next ex-husband (who left a negative review on "Custom Justice" on Amazon. I guess he didn't like the truth being told. That comes out in a future episode.) This one is pretty short and sweet, but that's perfect for me as I'm recovering from my thyroid biopsy.

Custom Justice - chapter 17, Back to Arkansas

When I was dumped on the side of the road yet again by people I thought I could trust, there was no alternative but to return to Arkansas. Not knowing what choices are available inevitably leaves someone with no choice at all. Both good and bad things came from that experience. My son was born, and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. But I also met death as a result. Then I became fatally ill for a long time, living my life from a wheel chair. I wouldn't have survived without the kindness and love of a man so deeply misunderstood by an entire town.

Custom Justice - Chapter 16, The Great Unraveling

Florida turned out to be a nightmare. While this chapter is only a brief overview of my time there, the book "Detailed Pieces of a Shattered Dream" does go into a lot more detail of that time. I was tricked, lied to, abandoned by family, homeless, flea infested, jobless, threatened, sold, raped and beaten during that time. I do glaze over the truly brutal stuff so it's not quite as horrendous as it could be, but the other book does talk about more of those details. I've been told multiple times that "Detailed Pieces" is actually a real life thriller.

Custom Justice - Chapter 10, Firing on All Cylinders

Losing my job in 2019 was completely devastating to me at the time.  They claimed that I 'seemed unhappy' but since publishing the book I have discovered that the truth was that they had discovered that I'd been made famous on a pornography site and they didn't want that associated with the company.  Too many of the employees were likely to find me in their hidden, twisted, sickening debauchery. Revenge was served, and not even by my hand.

Custom Justice - Chapter 9, The Last of the Innocense

Trigger Warning - this episode does deal with self-blame after rape, as well as pedophilia and molestation. It took me a very long time to realize that what I'd been through had actually been called rape because, no matter how often I'd heard them say it on crime shows on television, those rules didn't apply to me.  I wasn't on television. I was in my own home with someone I'd known for years.

Custom Justice - Chapter 8, Hasty Decisions

Early on I was trained to have a particular mindset. By the time I was a teen, I was making some terrible decisions. Still, that doesn't justify the abuse I suffered and the hands of family, friends and strangers alike. No amount of poor decisions will ever justify molestation, rape, or abuse of any kind. It took a long time for me to learn that, but it's a lesson I'm only too eager to pass along now.

The first time I found out that I was being hunted by my abuser I was a crushing blow. But through the encouragement of a friend, I figured out how to fight back. Sadly, it didn’t get me anywhere. This weeks podcast cover photo is one I took in Calendar Park in Scotland, Easter Day 2011.

Not all my memories of my mother were bad. I actually had some that were fine, amusing, and downright mischievous. This weeks podcast cover photo is a photo of me as a little bitty redhead around the age of four.

Custom Justice - Chapter 3, Busted

Sometimes child abuse doesn’t mean being hit or punched or kicked or even screamed out. Sometimes it’s nothing more than neglect as punishment. This weeks podcast cover photo is me at 15 with my dog Cookie. Conveniently cropped out, my father.

Custom Justice - Chapter 2, The Dog House

Custom Justice - Chapter 2, The Dog House

I grew up with dogs in my house. They were the greatest companions, often risking themselves in order to keep us safe. But even then, they were treated as though they were only animals. Now I have cats, and I finally understand the value these animals bring into our lives. This weeks podcast cover photo is one of me at 13 holding my dog Cookie.

Custom Justice - Chapter 1, Juniper

My earliest memories surfaced in my 20s in such a violent way that couldn’t understand them for a long time. Now that I do, they’ve driven a wedge between myself and my family that will likely never be altered or removed. This weeks podcast cover photo is a photo of me at around 4 years old. And Then She Was Strong

And Then She Was Strong

I had somebody ask me a question earlier today, if I were nominated to do a Ted talk, what would I talk about? You got me thinking, which can be a rather dangerous past time I know, but it can also be very rewarding. Sometimes it reminds me of who I really am.

His Name is David Humphrey

His Name is David Humphrey

Sometimes we get the opportunity to go backwards in time and catch up with people who remind us of things in our childhood long forgotten. Sometimes it’s those who are long lost who gave us the opportunity to begin with. Tonight’s podcast interview is with a childhood friend of mine, David Humphrey. David and I reminisce on the days we had in detention, we talk about what he’s done with his comedy and extreme level of intelligence, and even discuss the book he wrote. More than anything, we laugh. We remember. We understand.

The Lens of Randy Poe

The Lens of Randy Poe

I long admired his work and his mastery of Lighting. He had a special way of bringing back old Hollywood glamour that I had not been witness to in a great many years. I finally got my chance to work with this master of his art and once all the girlish giggling was done and I managed to calm my joy, we had a little sit down chat.

Surviving, then Thriving: Trauma Recovery Spotlighted

Human trafficking seems to be what everyone is talking about lately but from the point of view of degrees and legal groundwork. Very few survivors are willing to speak up. That’s where I come in.
