#80: Natural vs. Synthetic with Master Perfumer Christophe Laudamiel
In this episode, Frauke brings back a favorite guest, Master Perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, to help educate us on the age-old debate of natural vs. synthetic in Perfumery. Christophe begins by defining what natural and synthetic molecules are, explains the role of petroleum and pine oil in perfumery raw materials, as well as describes the safety, availability, and consistency of natural materials vs. those from a lab. He debunks the myth that natural disasters are the reason brands move from natural to man-made (ie. Madagascar vanilla, Grasse rose, Tunisian neroli), and passionately pleads for more support for aromatic plant farmers and communities around the world. Christophe explains how he uses both naturals and synthetics to inform his artistic creations, and what role each plays based on what you're trying to achieve. He also discusses the "clean" movement and the importance of getting facts from the right sources, as well as explains the incredible misinformation about sustainability. This conversation is not only eye-opening and clarifying, but will leave you more informed that one is not better than the other, but rather both play important roles in Perfumery.

#79: Digitizing Smell with Alex Wiltschko
In this episode, Frauke sits down with neuroscientist and Google Research spinoff Osmo CEO Alex Wiltschko to discuss the exciting frontier of digitizing smell through artificial intelligence. Alex shares the groundbreaking work Osmo is doing to help the fragrance industry find new and interesting odor molecules never smelled before. He discusses where we are in terms of understanding our sense of smell vs. our other senses of sight and sound (hint: it's about where we were with vision in 1820) and the incredible potential he sees in having AI support the artistic work of perfumers, and providing them with the means to be even more creative. Alex shares how Osmo works exactly, where its potential lies beyond perfumery, and what the future holds for digital noses. This episode will leave you amazed at what possibilities lie in store for olfaction - we just have to follow our nose.

#78: Making the Invisible Visible with Luciano Vera
In this episode, Frauke sits down with analytical chemist Luciano Vera to discuss his use of different analytical methodologies to make invisible odors visible. Luciano explains how describing odors is a way we humans try to make odors visible, yet our odor vocabulary is a paradox that needs to become more robust, standardized, and must include emotion. He then explains the analytical tools he uses, including Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), GC-Sniffing, and E-Sensors to identify and interpret odor molecules. He shares what we can learn from the data and how it can be useful in various industries. He explains what the machines can't detect, but our human noses can, and vice versa. He also shares what olfactory nuances he's observed among various cultures, and reveals what project he found to be particularly curious (hint: it involves a gorilla). Finally, Luciano shares what he believes is coming in the future, which in fact may already be here.

#77 Olfactory Sounds with Yuliana Kireyeva
In this episode, Frauke sits down with choir conductor, vocalist, vocal and piano teacher, and aromatherapist Yuliana Kireyeva to discuss how she translates scents into musical melodies. Yuliana shares how she smelled everything as a child growing up in Belarus, and reveals what innovative measures she took to create her very first perfume. She explains in which ways composing music and perfume are similar and different, and clarifies the elements of notes, chords, melodies and dynamics. Yuliana and Frauke then engage in a fun exercise where they smell 3 scents - lemon, clove, and patchouli - and Yuliana translates their scent into music. They invite you to join along, too. This episode will have you engaging with scents in a whole new way, and maybe even singing or playing an aromatic tune.

#68: Scent in Fiction with author Erica Bauermeister
In this episode, Frauke sits down with New York Times bestselling author Erica Bauermeister to discuss the focus of scent in fiction. Erica shares what the sense of smell means to her, explains what she believes people get wrong about the sense, and gives her perspective on its potential. She tells Frauke about her journey to writing fiction, including what brought her to incorporate scent as a focal theme (hint: Italian food may have been involved). Erica also talks about the time she lost her sense of smell, inconveniently right as she embarked on her bestselling novel The Scent Keeper (btw it was a Reese's Book Club pick). After listening to this episode I know you'll be inspired not only to read her books, but to find yet another way to connect with your sense of smell more. What a gift!

#67: Death and Olfaction with Nuri McBride
In this episode, Frauke sits down with Israeli-based writer, perfumer and community organizer Nuri McBride to discuss the intersection of death and olfaction. Nuri shares her life journey that led to the work that she's doing now, including working in refugee resettlement and torture treatment primarily in Kenya, Thailand, Israel, and the United States, as well as later joining a Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) and becoming a Metaheret. She explains what death and scent have in common in Western culture (hint: both are ignored and heavily sanitized). She also discusses the concept of "death positive" and argues for the need to teach death literacy instead. Nuri talks about using art in her death meditation workshops to help people become more comfortable with the idea of death, and shares why the concept of the brevity of time, and the immediacy of pleasure, are so critically important to understand and embrace. Nuri also gives a global perspective on the intersection of death customs/rituals and scent, revealing the many ways cultures use scent to create space around special occasions like death. This is a conversation that will certainly leave you with new perspectives on death and the positive role olfaction can play.

#66: The Language of Scent with Sarah McCartney
In this episode, Frauke sits down with London-based writer and indie perfumer Sarah McCartney to talk about the language of scent. Sarah shares the unique and fascinating journey that led her to perfumery which, in her words, was "the long route." She explains what brought her to start working as a writer for Lush cosmetics (yes, the famous bath bombs) and shares how she learned to write descriptively about scents to entice people to buy products without having smelled them. Sarah also reveals the clues in people's language that let her know what scents they like, and don't like, and shares her thoughts on the need for retailers to gender scent and use the dreaded "notes list." She also shares the meaning behind her company 4160Tuesdays and how you can join her Patreon to learn how to make perfume affordably. Finally, Sarah and Frauke discuss their work with UK smell and taste disorder charity Fifth Sense, incl. how Sarah ended up making a parosmia-friendly perfume. She also explains what brought her to finally settle down in Los Angeles and eventually start the IAO. Saskia discusses what she believes people get wrong about the sense of smell, what potential she sees in this beautiful sense, whether smelling, and scent for that matter, is a human right, as well as why perfume is more than just the liquid in a bottle. #50: Making Sense of Smells with Charlie Atkins
In this episode, Frauke sits down with congenital anosmic Charlie Atkins to answer her curiosities about smells. Charlie was born without a sense of smell and had a bunch of questions about smells she wanted to ask Frauke. These are everyday curiosities about odors that we, as smellers, frankly don't think about much. Questions like "What does it feel like to smell?", "How long do food smells last?", "How do you buy products to avoid clashing smells?", "How does smell travel and stick to things?" and a whole lot more! This was really hard! But Frauke is always up for a challenge. It certainly makes you think a lot more about this beautiful sense that so many of us take for granted. And the great thing about this conversation is that it allows everyone across the smell spectrum to gain new perspectives. So, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

#45 Testing & Diagnosing Olfactory Health with Valentina Parma, PhD
In this episode, Frauke sits down with experimental psychologist, Assistant Director, and Assistant Member of the Monell Chemical Senses Center Valentina Parma, PhD to discuss where we are today in terms of testing and diagnosing the health of a person's sense of smell. Valentina shares how COVID became a magnifying glass for connecting the sense of smell to our health, and how unprepared we all were in our ability to assess olfactory health when smell loss became a key symptom of the virus. She explains how screening for small, incremental changes in olfactory function (and dysfunction) from an early age has the potential to help doctors detect olfactory disorders, then monitor their progress, and even intervene early in the diagnosis of such illnesses as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Valentina also provides information on an exciting new rapid smell test being developed by Monell scientists and collaborators called SCENTinel, and reveals her mission to get this quick and inexpensive screening tool into every doctor's office around the world. Frauke and Valentina also discuss the important collaborative work being done by the GCCR and the 3 simple tests you can do at home to assess your own olfactory health.

#43: Smelling History with Caro Verbeek
In this episode, Frauke sits down with art and sensory historian Caro Verbeek to discuss what riches we can learn from smelling the past. Caro takes us through her personal scent journey growing up in the Netherlands and reveals the moment she knew that being a smell historian was what she was meant to do. She explains the role that historical smells can play in helping us to understand the past in new ways, and argues how smell is just as much a part of our heritage as music (hearing) and art (seeing). She explains why it's important to understand smells in history, and how we can apply smelling to evoke a more contextual understanding of history in museums, including for the visually and olfactory impaired. Caro reveals the most interesting, and surprising, historical smells she's encountered, and shares her experience of smelling Cleopatra's famous perfume Mendesian. She also shares information about the exciting new project, Odeuropa, she's taking part in which aims, among other things, to recognize, safeguard, present, and promote olfactory heritage. #42: Scent in Palliative and End of Life Care with Madeleine Kerkhof
In this episode, Frauke sits down with Clinical Aromatherapist Madeleine Kerkhof to discuss the role that our sense of smell, and scents, can play in oncology, palliative (incl. dementia and Alzheimer's), and end of life care. Madeleine shares her journey that led to the work that she does now, why she believes integrative care should be the true focus of health care (and not sick care), and why we need to focus on the needs of the individual person as much as possible. Madeleine also shares how she approaches using scent as support for those with dementia and Alzheimer's, and offers some tips as to what you can (safely) do at home to help. This is an important conversation that sheds light on the wonderful ways our sense of smell, and scents, can play an integral role in providing safety, comfort, and calm even in the most difficult circumstances, and most painful moments in life.
Note: please only use essential oils and CO2 extracts on the most vulnerable if you are trained to do so. Essential oils are highly concentrated substances that need to be used with the utmost safety in mind. Thank you.

In this episode, Frauke explores why we have two nostrils; why not just one? And she'll explore what that means for how we smell. She'll discuss: Why is it that, even though we have two ears and two eyes, having two nostrils is still a little different? Why are our nostrils important for our health? Why are they important for our safety? What does having two nostrils suggest about how we perceive the world around us? To wrap up, as always, Frauke offers a simple exercise you can do to apply what you've learned.

#4: How Smelling Influences Eating
In this episode, Frauke discusses the role your sense of smell plays in enjoying food - not only while you're eating, but even when you're preparing it. Frauke explains how we smell two ways, why our perceptions of smells are so different depending on how we smell our food, and she reveals an interesting insight about why humans are so unique in terms of smelling (it involves a bone, speech and choking - can you guess?). Learn how our brain perceives food aromas depending on where it's from, what shapes our enjoyment of food, and why it even matters. The episode also includes a few fun exercises to try out. At the end, as always, Frauke will reflect on the learning and provides guidance on how to apply it in your everyday life, including some cooking tips to enhance your eating experience.

#3: Why Is Smelling So Personal?
In this episode, Frauke discusses why no two people perceive smells the same way, and how it's possible for a person to love the smell of cow manure and hate the smell of roses. Frauke explains why we're all on our own personal smell journey, and she reveals where that journey begins (you might be surprised!). Learn why it is that not all smells are universally loved, what shapes our scent preferences, and why it even matters. At the end, as always, Frauke will reflect on the learning and provides guidance on how to apply it in your everyday life.

#2: A World With No Smells with Comedian Dia Kline
In this episode, Frauke talks to comedian Dia Kline about what it feels like to live in a world without smells. It's a fascinating (and hilarious) conversation that explores what it's like to grow up with congenital anosmia, the inability to smell since birth. Dia explains how she interprets smells, despite never having smelled anything, and what its' like to navigate a world surrounded by people who can smell. She shares the first time, as a child, that she realized there was this thing called smells. She takes us through the challenges of being on her own, dating and becoming a mother. And she reveals her curiosity about fragrances and her obsession with armpits. Needless to say, this episode is packed with a punch and plenty of giggles. But don't be fooled because Dia has a message for those of us who can smell, and there's a lot we can learn from her.

#1: The Underappreciated Sense
In this first episode, Frauke explores why our sense of smell is such an under-appreciated sense in our culture. She discusses why so many Millennials are willing to give up their sense of smell, what our language says about what senses we prioritize, what it was like back in time when smells (and smelling) were an integral part of society, and what two periods in history shaped how we value our sense of smell, and smells, today. She also explores what role COVID-19 has played in shifting the conversation about smell. At the end, Frauke reflects on how we got to where we are today, and offers two simple exercises you can do to apply what you've learned.
