Alchemy in Marketing with Rory Sutherland | Strategy Sessions Podcast

Alchemy in Marketing with Rory Sutherland | Strategy Sessions Podcast

Rory Sutherland is, perhaps, the closest thing to industry royalty that we have in marketing. He’s Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, a best-selling author, owner of one of the best TED Talks you’ll ever see and the man behind MAD Fest a marketing, advertising and disruption event taking place in London 4 – 6 July.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Lionfish, toothfish and pilchards – how rebranding fish drives sales
  • Humans have strange value systems
  • The map is not the territory – Alfred Korzybski
  • The relationship between innovation and marketing
  • All decisions look different with hindsight
  • Rory being a heretic
  • Mercedes v Toyota and how they manufacture quality without trade offs
  • Why people buy expensive wines
  • How to get young people to invest in pensions
  • When you shouldn’t use nudges
  • Why economists are the worst people on the planet
  • Why the Uber map is genius
  • Why random brands exist on Amazon
  • The benefits of being on Chris Evans’ breakfast show
  • How the Walls Viennetta came about
  • How managers can convince the board to invest in radical thinking

Rory Sutherland

Rory is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy, an attractively vague job title which has allowed him to co-found a behavioral science practice within the agency.

He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour - these are the often small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make - for instance tripling the sales rate of a call centre by adding just a few sentences to the script. Put another way, lots of agencies will talk about "bought, owned and earned" media: we also look for "invented media" and "discovered media": seeking out those unexpected (and inexpensive) contextual tweaks that transform the way that people think and act.

It is a hugely valuable activity - but, alas, not particularly lucrative. This is because clients generally do not have budgets for solving problems they did not know they had.

Before founding Ogilvy’s Behavioural Practice, Rory was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988. He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global. He writes regular columns for the Spectator, Market Leader and Impact, and also occasional pieces for Wired. He is the author of three books: The Wiki Man, available on Amazon (at prices between £1.96 and £2,345.54, depending on whether the algorithm is having a bad day), and the best-selling Alchemy, The surprising Power of Ideas which don't make Sense, published in the UK and US in May 2019, and, co-written with his former colleague Pete Dyson, the newly released Transport For Humans on the behavioural science of transport.

Rory is married to a vicar and has twin daughters. He lives in the former home of Napoleon III - unfortunately in the attic. He is a trustee of the Benjamin Franklin House in London and a Patron of Rochester Cathedral.

Hamptons Tech Week Special With Stephen Sabo

Hamptons Tech Week Special With Stephen Sabo

Hamptons Tech Week is back at the end of June.

It’s one of the must attend events in the tech sector because of the incredible network of people who attend. Steve Sabo is the Co-Founder of the event and he explores what makes the event special. He’s also the Founder of Ethereal, a blockchain and Web3 consultancy, a massive golf fan and the CEO of Vin & Fin, the financial services event you never knew you needed.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Hamptons Tech Week – what makes it special and what the plans are for the future
  • Why small events can keep a spark that the huge events can’t
  • The differences between the UK and US in the entrepreneur space
  • Is Web3 over hyped?
  • Why FOMO makes a terrible business model
  • Will the incumbents let Web3 ever reach its potential
  • Starbucks being the world leaders in using Web3… and why no one knows about it
  • What comes next in the Web3 space – and why it could be great for hipsters!
  • What role does government have to play in legislating for new tech
  • The intersection of tech and golf
  • How golf can change to capture a new audience and stay relevant
  • Why Belfast has a big future in the tech space
  • Vin & Fin – why pairing financial advice with wine tasting is the future

Stephen Sabo

Early on in his professional career, Steve recognized an opportunity to educate others with a CFO style approach designed to make the complex world of financial planning, taxes, and insurance accessible and simple. With this approach as his foundation, Steve founded Simple Society where he serves as the CEO today. At the core of Simple Society lies a dedication to providing objective, honest, and precise strategies.

Through this firm’s dedication to education of clients, Steve created a trademarked course called Vin & Fin, which pairs wine and financial education to make the complex topics in life easier on the palette.

The pandemic hit, making Vin & Fin press pause until events were "back" which allowed Steve to find his other passion in the world of blockchain and web3.  He created the consulting company Ethereal to help companies understand and integrate this technology into their businesses.  Ethereal also has its own projects which include Hamptons Tech Week and Liquidity CC.

Steve’s passion for connecting with others allows him to act as a partner, often developing mutually beneficial relationships for people in his vast network.  In his free time, he enjoys golfing at Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands, NJ where he lives with his wife and two children.

Strategy Sessions Podcast Episode 20 Twenty20

Strategy Sessions Podcast Episode 20 Twenty20

Episode 20 is about Twenty20 cricket. T20 to most fans these days.

But this episode isn't about cricket.

About 20 years ago the English cricket authorities identified a problem. Falling attendances, reducing relevance and people moving away from cricket.

This week's guest, Stuart Robertson, was the marketing manager at the time. Luckily, he knew his marketing onions and used researched, insight and a deep understanding of the problem to 'invent' T20 cricket.

This isn't a podcast about cricket, although we do chat a lot about it. It's a podcast about marketing and you'll find a whole host of information about how to solve problems through a marketing lens from this show.

And finally, we've got a T.O.P.T.I.P from Jane Roper, from Behind The Ad. If UTM tracking is lost on you, this is for you.

In the episode we discuss:

**How T20 cricket came to be born – the marketing version

o The rationale for the new competition

o The research behind the product development

o Stakeholder engagement

o Launching the product

o How it landed better than anyone expected

o Globalisation of the game

**The Hundred – cricket’s newest format from the ECB

o Is the strategy correct

o Is it close enough to cricket to be successful

**Starting a career with a graduate training programme at the Milk Marketing Board

**A career in sport marketing

**Moving to agency world

Stuart Robertson

Stuart Robertson is the Commercial and Strategy Director at The Canopy, a fast growing creative agency in Winchester.

An experienced Commercial Director with a successful career in rights-holder sports administration, he has held senior commercial positions at both governing body and club level.

Recognised as the 'creator' of Twenty20 Cricket whilst in his role as the ECB’s Marketing Manager, Stuart changed the whole cricketing world and, perhaps, the entire sporting landscape around the globe.

Black Friday

The Strategy Sessions… A marketing podcast.

Episode 12 ‐ Black Friday A Discussion With Luke Carthy

You know the drill.

It’s November, the pumpkins are in the compost heap and if you’ve got kids, you’ve started to wheel out the threat of “Santa’s watching” to improve behaviour.

Yes, Christmas is coming.

That means we get all steamed up about a concept we imported from the States (I’ll get over it soon) and focus on selling piles of products to our customers. If you want to know how to win in ecommerce, have a listen to the discussion with Luke Carthy.

Highlights of the discussions include:

  • Amazon (can you talk ecommerce without mentioning them?!)

Obviously Awesome

Obviously Awesome

Episode 10 ‐ Obviously Awesome Featuring April Dunford, Luke Carthy and Andi Jarvis.

Obviously Awesome is a such an obviously awesome name for a book, we had to rob it for the podcast.

April is a world leading authority on positioning, the misunderstood marketing concept that can be the difference between winning and losing for your company.

Developing a systematic way of positioning technology products and companies has become her life’s work and she has had the privilege of working with more than 100 companies, allowing me to go even deeper and broaden my positioning expertise.

We talk about the concept of positioning, how to spot when it’s going wrong, understand how to do it right and throw in a few questions from social media in an enjoyable and insightful chat.

Episode 10 also features a T.O.P.T.I.P from Luke Carthy, an ecommerce consultant who has some great last minute tips for sorting out Black Friday and Christmas for your business.

As always, a big thanks to our sponsor, Moyee Coffee. I’m a big fan of the coffee and the work they’re doing to help farmers in Ethiopia and Kenya achieve a living income. Please check them out.

April Dunford

April lives in Toronto, Canada - one of my favourite places - and has kids, a small dog, and a cabin in the woods. I get the feeling the cabin in the woods is her favourite place in the world!

The bulk of April’s work is with early and growth-stage startups. Companies where the stakes are high - and weak positioning can mean the difference between success or failure. She also work with large global companies, helping them develop deeper positioning expertise in their product and marketing teams.

Her book, Obviously Awesome, came highly recommended by Rand Fishkin on this podcast and captures my ideas about positioning and a methodology for doing it that any startup can follow.

It’s become a best-seller and popular among entrepreneurs, product, and marketing folk. April studied Engineering in University, and wasn’t meant to be in marketing or writing books, but it turns out she’s great at both of those.

April’s book recommendations were:
