Are you awakened by Scripture? Or, do you slumber surrounded by evil? (Dan. 8:15-22). Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez observes how God's Word exposes evil. Do you ever feel like evil is going to win out? Do you trust that God will restrain wickedness? (Dan. 8:13-14). Even the angels are shocked by the vision and question the duration of evil. It is revealed that the evil day will be limited for a specific time and that restoration and cleansing will follow. This passage encourages Christians by reminding us that evil will not prevail. It is limited to a time known by God. In God's time the evil we face will come to an end. Cleansing and restoration will follow. Persevere and preach the Gospel. God is still working even in the dark times.

Evil is real, but Christ is greater. We need to prepare for persecution and pray for our suffering saints throughout the world.

The Gospel must be proclaimed to all nations by those who witnessed the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. As a believer, you have become of witness to the Gospel in your own life. Now you are called to herald that message to the nations. Will you proclaim the Gospel message today?

Do you bear witness to the Gospel? What would you risk to maintain your witness? Acts recalls the commission to be witnesses. In the power of the Holy Spirit, God's witnesses will share the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Church history shows us that often witnesses are synonymous with martyrs. Would you give your life to the advancement of the Gospel?

First, all temporal authorities are perceived by the Primary Power. God knows what was, is, and is to come. Second, tyrannical governments come in different forms. An evil empire may be compelled by passion (vv. 3-4; 4c), driven to ever increase its power. Another empire may be propelled by reprisal (vv. 5-8), desiring to enact revenge others. A wicked government may be possessed of pride (vv. 9-12). This devious characteristic may be the most dangerous. It creates direct enmity between the prideful ruler and ultimate ruler, God. Daniel is shown a future filled with evil empires. Yet, he is not to be discouraged. The vision also confirms a third truth. Wicked rulers will be prevented from prevailing (vv. 13-14). God will only permit the wicked a short time to reign. He will bring judgment on nation after nation. Ultimately God will establish His own kingdom. Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done.

Do you walk in Joy? Proclaim it from the mountaintops. Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez teaches from the Christmas Carol, Go Tell It on the Mountain. This hymn begins with an Abrupt Announcement to humble shepherds. Shepherds hold a special vocation in God's kingdom. He calls Himself the Good Shepherd. These shepherds were ready for the message as they performed their duty of caring for their flocks. Next, the hymn tells of a Glorious Gospel. The message was heralded by angels. It spoke of joy for all people. Verse 3 expresses a Surprising Salvation. Featuring the humility of God, a child in a manger has come to save the humble. He is given greater majesty than ever before, demonstrating God's generosity. Nebuchadnezzar proclaims God's glory and warns against pride. Are you humble before God? Relinquish pride and receive grace today.

These verses show the confrontation of Daniel and Belshazzar. The king recognizes Daniel and restates the problem of the writing on the wall. He proposes rewards if Daniel will interpret the meaning. Daniel rejects Belshazzar's offer but agrees to reveal the message. First, Daniel will remind the king of his forefather Nebuchadnezzar. This greater ruler ultimately was broken by God and humbled himself before the Most High. How do you think through difficult situations? King Nebuchadnezzar was troubled by a dream. He called in the experts, but they could not help. Finally he called upon Daniel, the one with the Spirit of God. When we face difficult issues or circumstances, do we go to God? Do we turn to the revelation of God's Spirit in Scripture?

Do you hear God’s voice? Do you listen to God’s warnings? King Nebuchadnezzar's dream was confusing, but clearly represented a warning to the pagan ruler. Nebuchadnezzar recognized the significance of this dream and seeks help. Do you place yourself before God's Word? Remove distractions and seek God's voice. Share God's Word with others, so they can hear the warning and learn of salvation.

Will you repent before the judgment? Do you turn from sin when God warns? Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The king is the great tree who will be cut down. He will be humbled for 7 times (likely 7 years). Daniel urged the king to repent to possibly put off the judgment. We can avoid judgment for sin if we will repent and trust in God's mercy. Turn from rebellion and self, turn to Jesus and receive His mercy, forgiveness, and righteousness.

The world needs a witness! Are you ready to be called upon? Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez looks at Daniel 5:10-12. In this passage, the queen enters the scene. She brings a calming intervention to a chaotic moment. While Belshazzar does not know what to do, the queen reminds him of Daniel--the man of God. Daniel can give the interpretation. Perhaps there is hope for this wayward king. Are we faithful to bear witness in times of crisis? Are we knowledgeable of the Gospel and of good ministers of God's Word? Do you confidently call people to salvation?

These verses disclose God's response to Belshazzar's blasphemous banquet. In the midst of sacrilege, God enters the room to write the doom of Babylon on the wall. Panic ensues when the bodement appears--God's harbinger hand spelling unknown judgment upon Belshazzar. The king's wisemen blunder in interpreting the words. Belshazzar makes desperate deals with any able to offer help. How do we respond in a world writhing in fear? Are you a minister of peace? Do you demonstrate repentance instead of panic?

The passage tells of the moment when Nebuchadnezzar cast Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into the fiery furnace. When persecution comes to you or those you love, will you remain faithful? God promises to save the faithful  through the fire. 

In the midst of the fire, Nebuchadnezzar sees one like the son of god walking with the other three. The king calls the faithful servants of the Most High from the flames to discover that they were completed preserved from the fire. When God saves, He saves completely. He saves from sin today and from the eternal lake of fire. Have you received this salvation?

Upon surviving the furnace, Nebuchadnezzar applauds the servants of God. He praises their faithfulness, and warns their accusers. He awards the three with higher position. God will reward the righteous, in this life or the next, for their faithfulness.

Will your false gods save you? Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez looks at Daniel 5:1-4. These verses tell of a Belshazzar's blasphemous banquet. With Persia waiting outside the gates of Babylon, the acting king throws a depraved party in honor of his gods. He commits sacrilege by using Israel's consecrated vessels to toast idols. Instead of repenting and turning to the true God of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar increases his iniquity. What gods to we turn to today? Is it the gods of politics, psychology, education, medicine, or pseudo-morality? Can such gods save us? Repent and turn to the living God.

Do you bear witness to the Gospel? What would you risk to maintain your witness? Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez looks at Acts 1:6-8. These verses remind us of some of the final words of Christ before His ascension. Jesus calls commissions His disciples to be witnesses. In the power of the Holy Spirit, God's witnesses will share the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Church history shows us that often witnesses are synonymous with martyrs. Would you give your life to the advancement of the Gospel?

Are you Alert? Are you prepared? How is your conduct? Are you ready for the test? In this devotion, Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez looks at Daniel 3:1-18. This passage reveals the work of Nebuchadnezzar to counteract the dream of chapter 2. By building a statue of solid gold, Nebuchadnezzar rejects the vision of subsequent empires. By mandating worship to this statue, Nebuchadnezzar petitions his gods to continue his empire. The verses tell of the charges brought against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, for not bowing to Nebuchadnezzar's golden statue. The Bible warns Christians that the world will bring accusations against them. Such charges may misrepresent our beliefs and actions. Peter calls believers to live with excellent conduct to shame accusers and perhaps to win them to glory in the day of Christ. Do you have courage in your convictions? The king offers the exiles a final chance to worship his image. Their response is among the greatest answers given in the Bible. "Our God . . . is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, . . . but if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up." Would you have such courage in the face persecution and death? Remain in Christ! Receive His grace, so that you will be ready when the trial comes.

Are you a Gospel proclaimer? Are you a Herald for the King? Pastor/Professor Andrew Marquez looks at Luke 24:44-49. These verses remind us of some of the final words of Christ in the Gospel of Luke. In this Great Commission, Jesus instructs His disciples on the content of the Gospel found in all Scripture. He reminds them of the unfulfilled task of proclamation. The Gospel must be proclaimed to all nations by those who witnessed the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. As a believer, you have become of witness to the Gospel in your own life. Now you are called to herald that message to the nations. Will you proclaim the Gospel message today?

Like Daniel, do you pray through trouble and praise in victory?

In a short time, the king went from recognizing the Source of true power to trying to usurp that power. Nebuchadnezzar's plan comes with the threat of death to anyone not in compliance. Believers must recognize the activity of the devil. We must be on guard, knowing that even in the good times, Satan is looking for an opportunity to thwart God's plans and attack His people.

It expresses Paul's confidence of the salvation and sanctification of believers within the Philippian church. Paul's confidence is grounded in His knowledge of Christ.
