In this episode, we hear from Former Mayor of the City of Santa Cruz, Hilary Bryant, talking about the "Save West Cliff" campaign. After that we hear  from Erin Malsbury, science writer for the Good Times talking about the James Webb Space Telescope. And in the last part of the show, we'll hear from Todd Guild reporter for the Pajaronian and Good Times about who did the PVUSD board of trustees pick to fill a vacant seat, the latest on the two local children forcibly removed from their homes by “transporters” from Assisted Interventions, Inc and more.

Andrew Christopher Smith of Indexical came into the KZSC Studio to talk about their new album, Ghost Ensemble: We Who Walk Again and upcoming house concert happening this Saturday. More information is at indexical.org.

In anticipation of UCSC‘s Fifth Annual Climate Conference happening on March 7th at the Rio Theatre, keynote speakers, Paleobotanist, Scott Wing, of the Smithsonian Institute and Professor Emeritus and world-renowned eco-artist activist, Newton Harrison were interviewed on KZSC’s Artists on Art.

We talked about this year’s theme, Humans and Wild Ecosystems in a Hot World. It was a pleasure to see the Da Vinci mind in action, how the scientist informs the artist and how the artist informs the scientist.

The 5th Annual UCSC Climate Science and Policy Conference is happening, Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Rio Theatre located at 1205 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95062. This event is free and open to the public. And registering for the conference is highly recommended to ensure your seat.

Wes Modes is an artist activist who cofounded FreeSkool Santa Cruz, SubRosa the Anarchist Cafew, Guerilla Drive-In, & founded The Spoon, an international storyteller’s group. Wes is a radio star and writer among many other accomplishments. He is currently working on his Masters in Fine Arts at UCSC in the Digital Arts and New Media program.

Vlada Jakubikova & Muthu of Regular Line Santa Cruz an artists’ residency and exhibition program, , came onto KZSC’s Artists on Art, to talk about the Slovak artists that are invading Santa Cruz and the many events happening.

The Slovak Artist will be here and the residency takes place from July 3-20. Two main events are in place – an art exhibition at Apricity gallery in Tannery Arts Center and Santa Cruz Fringe Festival. We are also doing music workshops for kids at SC public library and Camp Tannery Arts.

There was a promo event at the ArtBar at the Tannery on July 5th at 4pm.

The grand Opening Reception at the Apricity Gallery is Friday July 18, 5pm – 9pp at the Tannery Arts Center, 1060 River Street, Studio #104, Santa Cruz, CA 95060. Opening hours are 12-6pm during July 20, July 24-27, July 31, August 2-3 & 12-9pm on August 1st.

Poet, translator, essayist, editor and novelist, Stephen Kessler came onto KZSC‘s Artists on Art to talk about his work, the upcoming publication of three books in 2015 and salons at Gabriella Cafe.

Stephen has published  several books of poetry, and was founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Sun in the 1980s. He has also been editor and/or writer at Santa Cruz Express, and more recently, Metro Santa Cruz.  He is widely known as a translator of Julio Cortazar, Jorge Luis Borges, Luis Cernuda, Fernando Alegria and the Spanish Nobel prize winner Vicente Aleixandre. He has published several volumes of poetry.

When asked how how he got into translating Spanish to English, non-native Spanish speaker, Stephen talked about beginning his spanish translation career due to growing up in LA. He believes that all Californians are Mexican.

We also talked about Paul Cocking‘s  salons at Gabriella Cafe, the first Tuesday of every month, with dinner at 6pm and conversation at 7pm. December 2, 2014 will feature Patrice Veccione and Wallace Baine talking about creativity. Stephen will have his salon next April 2015 to talk about his translation of Luis Cernuda’s entire works of Poetry.

On February 12, 2014, Beau Silver & Mikey Siegel came onto KZSC’s Artists on Art to talk about their work at BioFluent Technologies inventing and building “Tools for Integrating the Body, Mind and Spirit.”

We talked about their products; the Heartsynch, Hear Now, Nome.  Mikey is the main inventor and Beau works with the computer generated music properties. The inspiration behind these inventions are driven by questions such as: What if the technology that surrounds us every day, in our pockets, on our walls, at our fingertips, could be used to help us learn about ourselves rather than perpetually distract us? What if we could create technology that would help us in our own efforts to be more mindful, present, and accepting towards what is?

On August 27, 2014, founder and CEO of Bonny Doon Vineyard, educator, author of the book, Been Doon So Long,  activist and pioneering Viticulturalist, Randall Grahm came into the KZSC Radio Station to speak about his thirty years plus of making wine in Santa Cruz County.

Bonny Doon Vineyard has been and continues to be an integral part of the Santa Cruz culture. Talk about keeping it weird, Randall has been pushing the envelope on winemaking his entire career. I had my first organic wine experience at their tasting Room almost 20 years ago. My first screw cap wine was Bonny Doon.

During the show, we spoke on many topics ranging from how Randall first got into winemaking to what are his current projects.  We discussed who and what have been his inspirations. This got us talking about why the alien is the Bonny Doon Vineyard mascot and what that has to do with Chateauneuf du Pape. He explained how he is the original Rhone Ranger and what that means.

Randall explained how Bonny Doon Vineyard helped bring the screw cap on wine bottles to an unwilling public through an amazing marketing event that happened NYC in 2001 called the Funeral of the Cork.

Randall talked about his estate Popelouchum in San Juan Bautista and how it got its name. We discussed his newest project creating 10,000 new varieties of grapes revealing how and why he is making so many new grape varietals. Lastly, we talked about how is he a terrior seeker and what does that mean.

Local restauranteur, Paul Cocking came onto Artists on Art to talk about the art exhibitions and the monthly salons that take place the first Tuesday of every month at his restaurant Gabriella Café.

The July salon, happening July 1st features Michael Urban talking about New Orleans Jazz.

When Paul opened up Gabriella in 1992 with chef Jim Denaven, of Outstanding in the Field and local Santa Cruz sand artist, the idea was to cook with seasonal local farm food. Today, that idea continues.

Local Artists and co-directors, Angela Blessing and Stephano Engle, and performer Michelle Milendez, were guests on KZSC Artists on Art to  talk about this year’s “What is Erotic?”

“What is Erotic?” is a Santa Cruz tradition and the Hottest Valentines Date for the ninth year in a row, theatrical event with original performances of spoken word, dance, burlesque and more.

Always a gem, “What is Erotic?” traverses the lightness of love and pleasure and the depths of our own dark and hidden desires. Last year’s six-run show sold out. Be sure to get your tickets early at Brown Paper Tickets.

The 2014 Show Dates are February 7-9 and 14-16 at the 418 Project on 418 Front St. Santa Cruz, CA.  Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 pm,  Sunday shows start at 7 pm.

Doors open 30 minutes early because this show often sells out.  Come early!  It’s a chance to get a good seat and you can enjoy the “Erotic Salon”, where costumed characters interact with audience (if you like).

All proceeds benefit The 418 Project, since 1993, “The Place to Move and Be Moved”, in downtown Santa Cruz.

On April 16, 2014, Graduating MFA Students and Interactive Digital Artists, Stacey Mason and Phil Ly came onto Artist on Art to talk about their work that will be shown in the 2014 Digital Arts and New Media MFA exhibition, undercurrents at the Digital Arts Research Center, UCSC, April 26-27 from noon-5pm and May 1-4, 2014. The Opening night Gala is May 1st from 5-8pm.

Both Stacey and Phil work with games. Stacey focuses on interactive literature in her piece and installation is Between the Cracks explores the boundary between hypertext fiction ebooks and video games. Phil’s video game and installation piece, Interrogation uses both virtual and reality to create the space in which a person can feel “the other” in an uncomfortable situation.

Scott McGilvray & Kaya Lindsay came into the KZSC station October 22, 2014 to talk about the movie, Water for Santa Cruz County.

Water for Santa Cruz County is a short film (twenty-minute) that examines short- and long-range water source alternatives, and calls citizens, businesses, and other organizations to help shape a sustainable water strategy for Santa Cruz. This movie is the product of six months of research including interviews with city water officials, water treatment plant operators, the county water resources director, and others.

Dedicated to the Power of Small Ideas, Water for Santa Cruz County will debut at the Rio Theatre on Tuesday, October 28 at 7:30 pm.
Education is the first and most important step toward thoughtful, sustainable, community-driven reform.

Currently, Kim is the voice of the Santa Cruz Warriors. She recently retired from announcing for the Santa Cruz Derby Girls having been with them from the very beginning. Kim’s began her musical career by performing with the Holy Sisters of the Gaga Dada. Kim’s current band is the Henry’s.

Jennifer Radakovich and Cat Willis came into the KZSC Radio Station on September 10, 2014 on Artists on Art to talk about the upcoming Santa Cruz Ethnic Dance Festival happening September 13 & 14th at the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center.

Elissa Kline is a fine art photographer who works as an advocate for wild horses working with Return to Freedom, a sanctuary in Lompoc. Elissa and Ian come from a long line of artists. Her Grandfather was a Dada artist and her mother and father were both artists. In Elissa’s former life, she was a recording engineer and studio manager in New York and LA. Then over twenty years ago, she began working with Carole King first as a her ranch manager and now as her photographer.

Ian Janco is a songwriter and musician who just released his album Stronghold. He had a cd release party at the ArtBar in the Tannery Arts Center, September 6th that was also a fundraiser for Guitars Not Guns Music Program.

UCSC film professor, filmmaker, media archeologist, and new media artist, Irene Lusztig spoke about curating the latest Sesnon Gallery Exhibition, COMPLICATED LABORS feminism, maternity, and creative practicethat features many practicing feminist artists from the 1969 to today.

Irene’s film and video work mines old images and technologies for new meanings in order to reframe, recuperate, or reanimate forgotten and neglected histories. Her work can be seen at her website, Komsomofilm.com.

COMPLICATED LABORS GALLERY exhibition runs February 5 – March 15, 2014 at the Sesnon Gallery and features work by: Lenka Clayton, Mary Kelly, Natalie Loveless, Irene Lusztig, Jill Miller, Mother Art Collective, Alejandra Herrera Silva, Mierle Laderman Ukeles. The show also features a screening series of work by: Myrel Chernick, Beth Hall and Mark Cooley, Masha Godovannaya, Courtney Kessel, Ellina Kevorkian, Dillon Paul and Linsey Wolkowicz.

On November 5, 2014, performance artist, writer, activist, radical pedagogue and director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. Guillermo Gómez-Peña came onto Artists on Art to talk about his UCSC residency and the collaborative project Doc/Undoc  exhibition at the Sesnon Gallery. He performs, Imaginary Activism, at UCSC’s DARC, November 6th at 8pm.

Guillermo Gómez-Peña is a performance artist, writer, activist, radical pedagogue and director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. Born in Mexico City, he moved to the US in 1978. His performance work and 10 books have contributed to the debates on cultural diversity, border culture and US-Mexico relations. His art work has been presented at over eight hundred venues across the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Russia, South Africa and Australia. A MacArthur Fellow, Bessie and American Book Award winner, he is a regular contributor for newspapers and magazines in the US, Mexico, and Europe and a contributing editor to The Drama Review (NYU-MIT).

TEDxSantaCruz Founder and Co-Organizer, David Warren came onto Artist on Art to talk about his work with TEDxSantaCruz as well as at the third TEDxSantaCruz event March 8th, 2014 at the Hotel Paradox.

Singer, Songwriter and event producer, Jayme Kelly Curtis came onto Artists on Art to talk about the Santa Cruz County Art of Guitar Exhibit and Festival events running February 1–March 15, 2014.

Celebrating Santa Cruz’s Amazing Lutherie Community, this six week long festival is a series of events that feature 20 of the worlds most admired guitar builders who live and work here in Santa Cruz County. This week is the  First Friday: Exploring Guitars and Lutherie Friday, February 7, 2014, 5:00pm – 9:00pm at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, with lots of events at the R. Blitzer Gallery in the old Wrigley Building on Mission Extension on the Westside of Santa Cruz.

Dancers and Choreographers Collene Kollewe, Erin Price and Nahshon Marden of the dance company, Bare Outlines came onto KZSC’s Artists on Art to talk about their upcoming dance event, the Faraway NearBy at Motion Pacific’s program, the Incubator Project.

Along with Collene, Erin and Nahshon, the Bare Outlines Dance Company also includes Callie Daniel, Molly Katzman, Sierrah Dietz and Chelsea Zamora. Faraway Near By also features guest choreographers Molly Katzman & Sierrah Dietz and takes place January 17th, 18th and 19th 8:00pm at Motion Pacific in Santa Cruz.

The show discusses the affectionate distances at which people desire things. It expresses the flowing and distant feelings which come from wanting something but not quite obtaining it. Exploring the pathways which our desires create and the moments that they mesmerize you.

Visual Artist and Educator, Claire Thorson came onto KZSC and Artists on Art to talk about her exhibition,”Desire and Inquiry: The Art of Claire Thorson” that is available for viewing on the Museo Eduardo Carrillo, one of the first on-line museums in the world.

When you enter the museum and go to the On-View Gallery page you will find two abstract paintings by Claire entitled “Rest” and “Last Touch”. Directly under the images is a wonderful essay by Tom Maderos. Underneath the essay, you will be able to see 16 more paintings and drawings.

Claire teaches, painting, design and life drawing at Cabrillo College as well as the Monterey Peninsula College.  Currently she is showing “Near and Far”, mixed media figures by Claire Thorson at Open Ground Studios, 1230 Fremont Blvd Seaside, CA through February 22. Founder and Director of Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center, Cat Willis came onto Artist on Art to talk about her work as well as her presentation at the third TEDx Santacruz event March 8th, 2014 at the Hotel Paradox.

Cat has lived in Santa Cruz for over 13 years and originally from Rochester, N.Y. She began her formal dance education with Garth Fagan Dance, with whom she studied extensively for six years. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance from SUNY Brockport. Her passion for cross cultural understanding, dance arts research, study, and performance has led her to Central America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. She has taught dance throughout Santa Cruz, including two years with Mountain Elementary School as resident choreographer. Her work through her dance company, DIASPORA, has been shown throughout Santa Cruz and the San Francisco Bay Area.

KZSC‘s Station Advisors Michael Bryant and Keith Rozendal came onto Artists on Art June 11, 2014 to talk about the art of college radio making.

Michael Bryant has been the station advisor for 14 years and on the radio air for over forty years. He was the host of the beloved KZSC Beatles show, Here, There and Everywhere.

Michael and is handing the reigns over to Keith Rozendal on Solstice, June 21st, 2014 . Keith is scientific and medical journalist, and former new, public affairs director and program director at KCSB, UC Santa Barbara’s college station.

Human rights advocate and educator, Ms. Jasmina Bojic spoke with Nada on KZSC’s Artists on Art radio program October 29, 2014 about her work and the winners of this year’s 17th United Nations Association Film Festival. Ms. Bojic is a Lecturer/Film Critic/Founder and Executive Director UNAFF/UNAFF Traveling Film Festival and Director, Camera As Witness Program.

Last July, Ms. Bojic won the UNESCO Fellini Award in recognition of her exceptional contribution in promoting the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through the art of documentary film. She uses documentary films as a method to incorporate human rights education into the community college classroom.

Jasmina is Founder and Director of the CAMERA AS WITNESS program which extends the educational use of UNAFF documentaries throughout the academic year at Stanford. She uses documentary films as a method to incorporate human rights education into the community college classroom. Alongside the  UNAFF  through sample lesson plans, pedagogic resources and materials, and strategies for reaching diverse student populations.

17 years ago, Jasmina conceptualized what would become one of the oldest international documentary film festivals in the US – UNAFF (United Nations Association Film Festival) at Stanford University, which became Traveling Film Festival in year 2000. Last July she won the UNESCO Fellini Award in recognition of her exceptional contribution in promoting the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through the art of documentary film.  The Federico Fellini Medal was created by UNESCO in 1994 to recognize major contributions to the international film heritage, its promotion and preservation.

Ms. Bojic  has been working as a journalist for more than twenty-five years, covering many political and cultural events, including the Academy Awards, Cannes Film Festival, Sundance, Tribeca. She uses documentary films as a method to incorporate human rights education into the community college classroom. She has created comprehensive sample lesson plans, pedagogic resources and materials, strategies for reaching diverse student populations and an archive of videos for educational use.

UCSC Professor of Anthropology, Annapurna Pandey came onto Artists on Art on June 18, 2014 to talk about her work with Indian Traditional and Bollywood dance and promote the upcoming event, Mokshya! featuring the world acclaimed Rudrakshya Odissi Dance Troupe.

Professor Pandey work with the Indian Performing Arts Promotions the are bringing the Dance Troupe presentation Mokshya! An Intoxicating Spiritual Journey Through Dance Featuring the world acclaimed Rudrakshya Odissi Dance Troupe And Special Guest Mythili Kumar.

Last week’s guest Revital Carroll founder and director of Shakti Bhakti Ensemble  has been learning Odissi Dance by the very same, Rudrakshya Odissi Dance Troupe. She goes to India to see them and now they are coming here. What a small beautiful world!

This is their sixth trip to the US and Santa Cruz. This is also an amazing opportunity to see men perform Odissi dance.

Painter, Creative Witness, and Healer, Andrew Purchin came onto Artist on Art to talk about his work, the Creative Witnessing Project—making art at sites of tension, conflict and violence. He will be bringing to the third TEDxSantaCruz event March 8th, 2014 at the Hotel Paradox.

Andrew paints on site, be it landscapes or at events such as weddings or at historical moments. The types of events and moments he captures vary from the 2012 Republican and Democratic Conventions and the 2009 Presidential Inauguration to difficult and painful events, sites of conflict, violence and loss. He paints these places as way to witness, spur dialogue and help heal the community.

Painting Into Our Emerging Cosmological Identity is an exciting culmination of a year long educational collaboration using the creative Transformational Painting Process led by artistic director of Anavami Center, Maijo  with cosmological astrologer Rev. Pamela, group facilitator Ellen, and a group of 10 courageous painters.

These large format acrylic paintings will be shown at the Vital Body Therapy Center from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at 556 Ocean View Ave. in Santa Cruz right around the corner from the Shoppers Corner.

We also talked about the upcoming year-long series beginning May of 2013 through the summer of 2014, PAINTING into OUR EMERGING COSMOLOGICAL MYTHOLOGY.

Transformational Painting is a technique to stir the psyche to new awareness  with realizations of our relationships to inner and outer worlds through painting.  The painters embarked on a creative journey combining the creative Transformational Painting process and the new cosmological sciences. This project demonstrates how scientific language and symbols can support an inclusive rich and diverse emerging Universal culture and a more integrated context for transformative shifts in consciousness.

10 artists will show one large format painting, on the subject of their personal Cosmological identity. They are non-traditionally trained artists from a variety of backgrounds. Their work shows an approach to express, explore and integrate newest science discoveries with personal and emerging collective cosmological mythology.

Extended Painting Seminar, beginning May of 2013 through summer of 2014, PAINTING into OUR EMERGING COSMOLOGICAL MYTHOLOGY is open to take in components. Through an exploration of interconnectedness, they will learn how the powers of the Universe move within each of us. Exploring personal archetypes in the Creative Process, they will shift from their inherited stories to generative sustainable evolutionary stories of global community. Each month their paintings will resonate with a central figure of your personal mythology on the backdrop of our growing evolutionary consciousness. Get to know the char-acters that inhabit your mythology.

This kind of inner creative work takes no experience in the visual arts, but demands a willingness to release old stories and dramas that keep us in separation. There is an initial one-time fee of $60 for personal cosmological/astrological information from Pamela Wylie that can be used through the entire seminar. There is a monthly fee of $30 for additional information relating cosmological/astrological context, as well as a painting fee of $160-$185 sliding scale, to Majio which includes art materials and digital photographs.

The Irwin Scholars Exhibition 2013 is an annual collaborative group show recognizing and celebrating the vision of twelve artists in the Art Department at UCSC. The opening reception, at the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery is May 29, from 5-7pm with Awards Ceremony at 6pm. The exhibition runs May 29 through June 15, 2013.

This year’s recipient artists are Jose Rodriguez, Dmitri Zurita, Heidi Cramer, Noah Miska, Jessie Chernetsty, Lynora Valdez, Joanne Wong, Ethan Snyderman, Katherina Teague, Coleman Pritchard, Patrick Appleby and Christopher Cravey,

On June 19, 2013, local Santa Cruz Artist,  Musician, Designer and Painter,  Terry Hardin of the Spell, came onto KZSC’s Artist on Art to talk about his music.

The Spell will be playing at the First Annual Pleasure Point Street Faire, June 22nd with special guest, Nadia Lewis.

On June 28th, the Spell will be playing with at the Crow’s Nest with special guest,  Nora Cruz.

Artist, sculptor, educator and musician, Steve Addi of Artscape Productions came onto Artists on Art, June 26th, to talk about his current project, a mobile metal smithing sculpture creating machine.

Steve begins his road trip August 2013 and will be giving workshops and educational seminars as well as creating new sculpture wherever he can. He makes large pieces, sometimes monumental in size, using steel and glass. He randomly places the two media together and then composes until he views it as balanced and complete. He loves combining the solidity and longevity of steel with the fragility of glass.

Steve sees art as a way to of tapping into a higher consciousness, as man is the only earthly being who creates as a way to communicate and express. One of the goals of his life is to promote this ideal.

Performance Artists, Sexecologists, Eco-Artists, and long-term collaborators Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens came onto Artist on Art to talk about the upcoming West Coast Premiere of their movie, Goodbye Gauley Mountain, an Ecosexual Love Story. This takes place the opening night of the Santa Cruz Film Festival,  November 7, 2013 at 7pm at the Del Mar Theater.

After the show, there will be a question and answer period and then a short walk over to the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH) Opening Night Party. and runs through the 10th changing from usual Spring to Fall schedule. Plus with 40 plus movies showing, there are a bunch of fun events planned.

Painter and sculptor, Sean Walker and belly dancer and educator, Laura Barnes Walker came on to Artist on Art to speak with Nada about their upcoming exhibition and performance at the DoonArt Tour.

Sean’s work  predominantly feature birds, fish, and marine mammals images depicted on wood panels using paint, wood burning, and some carving to highlight the images. His experiences is inspired by the lush and rugged Pacific coastline and ocean.

Dancer & yoga teacher, Laura  has been dancing American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) for over ten years teaching for the last five. Her troupe, Calla Lily Tribal will perform a choreographed piece as well as ATS pieces that are extemporaneously by multiple leaders through cues such as a turn of the head and/or a wave of a hand. She teaches two classes each week at the West Side Studio on Swift Street in Santa Cruz.

Sean’s paintings will be available for viewing and sales at the 2013 Bonny Doon Studio Tour, Saturday July 27th & Sunday July 28th from 11am – 6pm. Calla Lily will be performing at 3pm both days.

Water for Santa Cruz! is an educational and inspirational film that explores our local water sources and interviews local water experts about three specific steps to water security as alternatives to the proposed Desalination Plant.

Water for Santa Cruz! premieres July 11 at 7:30pm at the Rio Theatre. The event also includes musical performances by Steve Newman’s Kitchen Jazz, Gail Swain, Michael Levy, and Russell Brutsche and several other short documentaries.

On June 3rd, Artist, Painter, Poet, Philosopher and brand new UCSC graduate, Sara True was the guest on KZSC’s Artist on Art to talk about about her two, one-person  exhibitions, “I Guess This is Life” at the Eduardo Carrillo Senior Gallery in the Elena Baskin Visual Arts and at Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, “Don’t Bleed so Loud I can’t Hear the TV”.

On May 20, 2013, Cellist Robert Burkhart came onto Artists on Art to talk about his music and the upcoming event Afternoon Chamber Music, Music for Cello and Piano, with pianist, Jeffrey Sykes.

During our interview, Robert performed tasty teasers and spoke about the three songs he and Jeffrey will be performing, Brahms, Schumann and Debussy. Robert aslo talked about the specialness of the venue and the piano, a pleyel, that Jeffrey will be playing.

The Afternoon Chamber Music, Music for Cello and Piano, A Schumann Brahms Debussy Matinee is happening Sunday May 26th at the Salle Pianos at 1632 C Market Street @ Hayes Street in San Francisco.

The Opening Reception will take place at the Felix Culpa Gallery on June 7th at a part of the Santa Cruz First Friday Art Tour.

Drummer, Rob Hart, of the Rob Hart Trio came onto KZSC’s Artist on Art to talk about his music and the upcoming release of the CD, 3000 Roads of 10 Worlds.

The Rob Hart Trio will be playing at Yoshi’s Oakland Jazz Club, July 1, 2013, in celebration of the release of 3000 Roads of 10 Worlds. The Yoshi’s show will feature many musicians and  special guest Kai Eckhardt for a dedication to long-time band mate and recently passed, John Seppela.

Artist, Raquel Cool came onto Artists on Art on October 9, 2013 to talk about her new art work, the Fertile Circle, Egg Donors to Adoption and Everything in Between and working collaboratively with Leah Campbell and Miriam Zoll.The three women, Raquel Cool, Leah Campbell and Miriam Zoll, met online through the group co-founded by Raquel, We Are Egg Donors. They began discussing how their unique experiences with egg donation and in-vitro fertilization could weave together a narrative dictated, in part, from books they have written. Campell’s Single Infertile Female, and Zoll’s Cracked Open: Liberty, Fertility and the Pursuit of High-Tech Babies (Interlink-June 2013) were both released in 2013, and Cool’s memoir, Work in Progress: On Hauling Cadavers, Selling My Eggs, and Other Unlikely Jobs, will be released in 2014.

The Fertile Circle will feature two events. First, there will be an Art Reception with Dramatic readings and performance by Cool, Zoll, and Campbell; reception for ARO’s Body exhibition; and liquid nitrogen cocktails on Saturday, October  19, 2013, from 7pm-10pm, at Art Research Office (285 Water Street, Unit B, behind Vapor Cleaners.)

Second, there will be an Author Talk and Book Signing at the Capitola Book Cafe will host a public conversation by Miriam Zoll and Leah Campbell on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 7:30pm. Capitola Book Cafe is located on 1475 41st Ave, Capitola, CA.

Since graduating, along with fellow DANMite Meredith Drum and Mitch Miller, Phoenix , the three began the company Augmented Mountain. They are currently in the throes of a kickstarter campaign, Open Source Palimpsest: Your Imagination, Any Place. They are looking for help to improve user interface, test and finish for use the open source program, Palimpsest.

For two years, Augmented Mountain has been developing Augmented Reality (AR) apps. The team does this using a powerful and unique programming language called Palimpsest, developed by Phoenix. The name pays homage to Archimedes’ manuscript which contains hundreds of pages of math and theories explaining and questioning reality. Palimpsest enables the building of dynamic interactive computer generated environments which transform real world geographies.

Professor of Film and Digital Media at UCSC, Peter Limbrick spoke with Nada Miljkovic about the 2 day Symposium, Unfixed Itineraries Exhibition: Innovative perspectives on Arab film and visual culture that he co-organized.

This symposium of scholars and artists takes place October 25 — 26, 2013 @ UCSC’s DARC and includes an exhibition of visual art at the Sesnon Art Gallery at UCSC. This event is free and open to the public.

This symposium on Arab film and visual culture emphasizes its plurality, the complex itineraries by which it is produced, and the multiple trajectories through which it can be experienced. Artists and scholars will visit from Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Europe and the US. Work presented will cover a wide area of forms, styles and thematic concerns. On June 3, 2013, brand spanking new PhD graduate at UCSC’s Games and Playable Media Center, Mike Treanor came into the KZSC studio to talk with Nada Miljkovic on Artist on Art.

Mike will begin his teaching this fall at the American University in Washington DC and developing a game department.

Mike is a developer and theorist.  He was researching in the Expressive Intelligence Studio which is dedicated to exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, art and design.  A major thrust of this work is advanced AI for video games.

Matthew Swinnerton of Event Santa Cruz, Techraising and Interrogation Hub came onto Artist on Art to talk with Nada Miljkovic about his new monthly series, Event Santa Cruz, that showcases thriving Santa Cruz businesses and the people behind them.

On May 5, 2013, local artist/educator and artistic director of Anavami Center, Maijo came into the KZSC studio to talk about the upcoming year-long series beginning May of 2013 through the summer of 2014, Painting Into Our Emerging Cosmological Mythology.

Led by Majio, Painting Into Our Emerging Cosmological Mythology is a year long educational collaboration using the creative Transformational Painting Process.

On November 28, 2013, dancer and Executive Director of the 418 Project, Laura Bishop spoke to Nada Miljkovic on Artists on Art in the KZSC radio studio about the upcoming, Incandescence, Black Tie Black Light 20th Year Anniversary Gala Event happening December 7, 2013.

This Gala event will have food by India Joze, music by  SambaDá, and dance performances by the 418 Project Performers that includes Aerial Dance, Contact Improv, Blues Dance and a LED Hoop Performance.

The 418 Project is located at 418 Front Street in downtown Santa Cruz and is a hub for social, ethnic and concert dance. We talked about how it began 20 years ago by Rita Rivera under the name of Santa Cruz Dance Gallery as one of the first non-profit arts center in Santa Cruz. It began with supporting a dance population that featured modern dancers, as well as artists including drummers and visiting teachers from Africa and Brazil. Soon after, Papiba Ghodinho began teaching capoeira.  Thirteen years ago, Sunday mornings became sacred space when Dance Church opened its doors.Today, the 418 Project programming includes a variety of classes from Contact Improv to Hoop Dance, Samba, Zumba, and West African Dance.
