#ScotsinUS Spotlight: Restoration of Sorbie Tower

#ScotsinUS Spotlight: Restoration of Sorbie Tower

The American-Scottish Foundation is proud to work with Clan Hannay to highlight the Restoration of Sorbie Tower project. It is a designated project of the Foundation. Sorbie Tower is the ancient stronghold of Clan Hannay in Galloway, South West Scotland, from where those with the family names of Hannay, Hannah, Hanna, and Hanney originated.

Our campaign is for its restoration which is a long term project. This will be phased according to the funds available, which so far have enabled several repairs to be carried out.

Homecoming: The Story of the Blavatnik Honresfield Library #ScotsinUS

Homecoming: The Story of the Blavatnik Honresfield Library #ScotsinUS

We are honored to be sharing with you all a brand new film revealing the contents and story of the Blavatnik Honresfield Library on this episode of #ScotsinUS. Prior to watching the full film, ASF President Camilla G Hellman hears from Amina Shah (Chief Executive of the National Library of Scotland) along with the members of the other two partners of the film, Giles Ingram (Abbotsford Home of Sir Walter Scott) and Sarah Beattie (National Trust for Scotland).

The recent acquisition for the nation of the Blavatnik Honresfield Library holds an extraordinary collection of manuscripts by the Brontës, Jane Austen, Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. The Library was formed towards the end of the 19th century by William Law (1836-1901), a Rochdale mill owner. It has been largely inaccessible for the last 80 years, until the work of Friends of the National Libraries enabled the collection to be purchased for the nation in 2021. It is now known as The Blavatnik Honresfield Library, and around 1,700 printed books have in addition been donated by the Friends of the National Libraries to nearly 70 libraries across the UK.

#ScotsinUS Spotlight: Charles, Lord Bruce on the Art & History of The Bruce Family and Broomhall

#ScotsinUS Spotlight: Charles, Lord Bruce on the Art & History of The Bruce Family and Broomhall

Join us this week as Charles Lord Bruce takes us on a journey of over 300 years of the Bruce Family's involvement in Scottish Art from the 16th to 19th century. He shows the incredible contributions that private families, like the Bruces, have made and the important role they play in the creation of cultural identity.

Their story begins in the 16th Century in a period just after the Reformation, where families like the Bruces were trading prosperously with other parts of Europe and importing ideas that are of architectural importance. Lord Bruce takes us through the rest of his family history all the way up until the 19th Century and the art and culture that is currently on display at Broomhall: The Home of the Family of Bruce.

Bringing the Bards Home Special #ScotsinUS

Bringing the Bards Home Special #ScotsinUS

Join us for the #ScotsInUS Podcast as The American-Scottish Foundation® hosts American Patrons of the National Library and Galleries of Scotland for a conversation on the important Scottish manuscripts which the National Library of Scotland, together with the National Trust for Scotland and the Abbotsford Trust, intend to acquire for the nation.

Joined by the National Library of Scotland and The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA among other special guests.

A highlight of the incredible history of Honresfield Library Collection and its manuscripts that risk falling into private hands, rather than remaining available for the nation.

The fact that the Honresfield Library has not been seen for almost a hundred years suggests that its contents are unimportant. This could not be further from the truth – for this is an unrivaled collection of original works by the country’s literary giants. But the manuscripts of Austen, Burns, the Brontës, and Scott are at risk of being sold into private hands and rendered inaccessible to the public once more.

The National Library of Scotland, as a member of a nationwide consortium, proposes an alternative scenario, in which the works of Scotland’s most celebrated writers are saved for the nation. The American Patrons of the National Library and Galleries of Scotland is spearheading the campaign in North America and is calling on all those with a love and passion for Scotland, its culture, and heritage to pledge their support.
