You might have seen it before on TV or in the movies- the age-old nerdy, stereotypical unattractive Asian stereotype. From Breakfast at Tiffany's to Charlie Chan, early depictions of Asian men in the media have resulted in them being seen as a joke in the public eye. It's a bit rare to see something as blatantly racist as that on the big screen these days, so how come people still view Asians the same way people did in the 50's? Or conversely, why do some people like Asians a little too much? For a lot of queer Asian people, it can sometimes be very hard to find a place where they are embraced for who they are. This can even be the case in some Asian families, where they may believe that being queer is a direct result of Western influence. In Asia, there are many laws that discriminate against same-sex relationships. But was it always this way? Is being LGBTQ+ only a part of Western culture? "But aren't you Chinese? Shouldn't you know how to speak your own language?" For some of us, especially Asians who are third generation or later, we did not grow up speaking our native language, or we may have forgotten it or even rejected it growing up in order to get by in America. What we didn't realize as kids was how far it would make us feel from our culture. Because language is such a big part of any culture, it is painful when we can't speak with our relatives or our other Asian peers because it makes us feel as if we are not Asian enough. Growing up, we used to feel like outcasts in western society. Things we ate, the language we spoke, the music we would listen to, holidays we would celebrate, and more were very different compared to our friends who aren't Asian. Because of this, we thought we were the only ones who would follow these traditions. Listening to other Asian narratives allowed us to appreciate and love our culture. We created this podcast to share our personal experiences and narratives but we also believe it is important to share others as well! Listening to more stories and experiences others face, teaches us more about the world, enriches our understanding of others, and connects us.
