Let's chat about Chinese and Korean restaurants! Ordering tips, etiquette, and more
Let's chat about Chinese and Korean restaurants! Ordering tips, etiquette, and more
Discovering food from different cultures and experiencing the variety of flavours and tastes is an important way to learn and appreciate other cultures apart from our own. Food in itself is a language of its own, communicating how things may have come to be. It might be the weather of a certain location, the availability of produce, a matter of survival through times of war, special delicacies and/or much more.
While recipes have been passed down over many generations, and the etiquette of meal times as a family or at a social gathering have transpired, this was a topic that interested Rox and Jules for this episode.
Listen in as they share some of what they understand about restaurant etiquette at Chinese and Korean restaurants, tips on ordering, and some things that just are the way they are.

Signs to quit your job
Signs to quit your job
With our fair share of work experience seeing the good and bad in different jobs, it’s time to spill the tea. And as thirty-something year olds who have both made career changes, we reflect on the signs that prompted the next move. What are those moments where we’ve realised, maybe it’s time to move on? Should I stay for longer in this role and see how it goes, or should I look elsewhere?
It’s not easy to make the call. And it is definitely scary to face change. As well as to those of you who might be thinking about resigning. However, we do want to point out that some of us are lucky and have worked hard to be in a position that allows us to thrive, working with a team that we love and enjoying the work that we do. And sometimes, it takes time to figure out what works for you. We’re grateful for all the opportunities we’ve had so far, while also excited to share what we’ve learned.
Let us know what other signs that may play a part in resigning in the comments or email us at roxaneandjulia@gmail.com. Do you have any stories for us?

Our karaoke memories – and all the songs we love
Our karaoke memories – and all the songs we love
As 30-something-year-old Asian-Aussies, karaoke was a huge part of growing up in Sydney – both as young children and young teenagers. Karaoke brought us joy, it taught us about our culture, and most importantly, it bonded us.
From karaoke room must-haves, to karaoke drinking games, to all the songs we used to listen to on our MP3 players, Rox and Jules share their karaoke experiences and their go-to karaoke songs. Rox shares her fave Chinese songs, and Jules her fave Korean songs – and even though they come from different Asian backgrounds, funny that some things – like sad ballad lyrics – are the same.
*Caution* This is not a podcast episode, this is karaoke session. Listener discretion is advised 😂
Did we pick any of your go-to karaoke songs? What's your fave and what karaoke memories do you have?
We want to know!

It's okay to want what you want
It's okay to want what you want
Proposals, marriage, children. Typical topics of two 30-something-year-olds – at least for us..! Rox shares her proposal story for the first time with Jules. We reflect on whether proposals or marriage was something we wanted all along or something that was necessarily on our horizons. Although Rox and Jules have different views on marriage, one thing they know for sure is this: that it’s okay to want different things — that it's okay to want what you want — whether it’s traditional, not traditional or somewhere in between. People want or don’t want things for different reasons, and whatever you’re feeling, this is a little reminder that it's okay. Get ready for a long and chatty one.

Trying to understand Attachment: childhood fears, our need for validation
Trying to understand Attachment: childhood fears, our need for validation
Is there such thing as healthy attachment? What’s so bad about being attached? To be honest, we don’t really know, but in this episode, we try to figure it out. Speaking from an “anxious-preoccupied” attachment-style POV, Rox and Jules chat about some childhood fears, getting validation from others, trying to make people happy and more. If you get validated by nothing, are you nothing? Do you have fears around being attached? Or simply put, what is attachment to you?

Being the obedient daughter and the 'good girl'
Being the obedient daughter and the 'good girl'
Don't bring shame to the family, and you're sweet 🥲
Being the obedient daughter, son or child, or being the good girl or boy – is damn hard! And whilst being 'obedient' can look different to each person, how it feels to carry this load can be universal.
Striving to be 'perfect' and having that voice and pressure to be 'good' can manifest in other ways. We're talking about being rebellious, being dishonest... finding 'freedom' in unhealthy ways, and much more. In this episode, Rox and Jules discuss whether they're 'obedient' and the pressures they had – and still have – to make their parents feel proud, and how they coped - and still cope – with it.

Taking a walk down memory lane: Living abroad in Japan & France, long-distance relationships
Taking a walk down memory lane: Living abroad in Japan & France, long-distance relationships
We walk down memory lane and revisit some memories of our youth – specifically our time living our abroad in a completely different country. Living in Japan and living in France – a country where we both don’t speak the language – may sound adventurous and fun, but it could also mean other things such as long distance relationships or navigating to places using a physical lonely planet guide (yes, we’re talking about the pre-google-map days). Did you ever live abroad? If you have, where did you live abroad and for how long? Or if you’d like to, where would you want to go?
This episode is a short but sweet one. Come get cosy with us for another chatty one and as always, we hope you enjoy another episode of the Asian Soup Podcast.

Let’s talk about language. Speaking English, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese
In this episode, we dive into a discussion about LANGUAGE. Language is something so embedded in our everyday lives that we don’t even notice day to day how important it is for communicating with different people in our lives. Through conversation and sharing, we can learn more more about the similarities we have as first generation Asian Australians and explore how important language is to our culture, and our upbringing. Why is language so important? How has it shaped the way we see the world? What was it like to jump between English and Korean, Chinese, Japanese or Cantonese? Do you ever think or count in another language? Let us know what languages you speak, any challenges you’ve faced, what you’ve learned or anything you want to share in the comments, DM us, or email us.

Let's talk about Pachinko Episodes 1-3: Our first impressions *WITH SPOILERS*
Pachinko is a story of Sunja that spans 4 generations – with the fourth generation (Solomon's story) touching on the Asian-American experience – something Rox and Jules can relate to as Asians growing up in Australia. In this episode, super excited about the show and the book, Rox and Jules unpack what they think about Episode 1-3 so far - weaving in their personal experiences as Korean-Australians and Chinese Australians along the way. They dial in Jules' grandma who lived through colonial Korea and invite a guest with a Korean-Japanese-Australian background on the show as well, because – well, why not!
Anyone else really invested in the show right now? Did you read the book too? How do your experiences relate to the show? Did you bawl your eyes out too T_T

Tanned, Skinny, and Flawless skin? Here’s what we’ve got to say about Beauty Standards 💅🏽
Tanned, Skinny, and Flawless skin? Here’s what we’ve got to say about Beauty Standards 💅🏽
Beauty standards 💅🏽 What are they and who gets to have a say on what they are? Everyone’s idea of beauty might be different for themselves or what they find beautiful. It’s both very personal and subjective. In this episode, we get chatty and real about what our idea of beauty was growing up in Sydney, Australia as Asian Australians. We try to unpack what our ideas of beauty are, why they are that way and how it affects the way we view beauty. Were we more drawn to western or Australian ideals of beauty? Or did we have some Asian influences of what beauty meant? And being a woman – the pressure of being beautiful is a whole other thing in itself right?
The main thing we wanted to share was that despite all of these ideals and constructs of what is “beautiful”, and to remind ourselves that that no one is perfect – and that’s OKAY! Hopefully by sharing these silly thoughts, we can all relate that it’s okay to struggle at times with making sense of beauty. What’s important is for us to value ourselves more and learn to FEEL beautiful and love ourselves just the way we are.
We hope you enjoy episode 9! Let us know what your ideal beauty standards were growing up, or anything you want to share in the comments 💖
