Darkness and how to SHOW not tell
The Dark and Darkness ( capitalization for emphasis) is a great way to SHOW ( not tell) a character's intent, setting, genre, conflicts, morality, ignorance and more. It's a great plot device too that can add tension and create a foreboding atmosphere in an otherwise benign event or scene.

Mirrors and Ways to SHOW not TELL
#writingtips #writinginspiration
Mirrors are symbolic of vanity, truth clarity, illumination, distortion, and a reflection of one's soul. All of these can help you SHOW emotion, characterization, conflict, setting, worldview, and plot.
Things to be considered if there's a mirror in your story:
How does the character look into the mirror ( gaze, ponder, glance, stare, grimace, etc ) How is the mirror framed?
Gilded, modern, minimalist, industrial, chipped?
Is the glass ancient, new, distorted, clean, fogged, dirty?
How big or small is the mirror?
What else is reflected in the mirror?
What is not reflected in the mirror?
ALL these things can—if you chose—SHOW the character’s personality, emotion, setting, conflict, worldview, and more! Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the showiest of them all?

Using BOOKS to SHOW not TELL
#writintgtips #writinginspiration
Books can mean so much more than just be symbolic for learning and knowledge. They can show emotion, conflict, setting, characterization. They can foreshadow too. It's all in what and how you use the book(s) in your story. Any detail that you include about the book can make your writing more purposeful and add nuance to your characters and story.
Books and all their little details can SHOW emotion, personality, world views, societal views, without TELLING. And readers are smart-- they pick up on those clues instinctually.
What's the title of the book in your story? How is the title important to the plot, character, and conflict? Is the book old or new or ancient? Honestly, who doesn't love ancient wisdom? Why exactly is the book forbidden? Or hidden? Or locked away? Or forgotten? What does it really say about the characters or the setting or society? Is the book well-loved, dog-eared? Or is it in pristine condition? What extra clues do you want to give your readers by including a book in your plot?

Writing Resolutions & Finding Balance
The new year is about making author and writing resolutions that are difficult to keep AND about trying to balance our writing life with real-life responsibilities. The writing struggle is real. One many of us face and feel bad about because we can't seem to manage all that we should.
Life throws us off balance and our well-intentioned resolutions go out the door. But THAT'S OKAY! 😃 Here's why!

SHOW don't TELL | gift giving
Giving gifts is another way that writers can SHOW the desires, strengths, and needs of a character in your story. Showing is a clue into your character's personality so if you have a scene where they give a gift, consider what you would like to show your readers. All those showing clues add up and make for memorable and believable characters.

SHOW don't TELL | Clothing Matters
Clothes can say a lot about a character, their mood, personality, culture, ambitions, personality, and much more if it's done for purpose. But beware, descriptions for no reason just add to word count. This episode peeks into the story closet to offer ways to give readers clues about your characters.

8 Things I Learned During My Writing Journey | Write a Novel | Writing Inspiration
There is a lot to learn about writing and authoring but these are the 8 that resonated the most with me.

Find Time to Write | Writing While Working Fill-Time
What happens when you want to write a novel but life and work make it almost impossible? Is there any way to squeeze in some precious writing or do you need to postpone your writing ambitions? This episode is a real life look at a work schedule change that took away valuable writing time and the tough decision I had to make about working on a current novel.

Novel Feedback | When to Accept | When to Reject
Novel feedback often can really help you make your novel better, but sometimes the advice just doesn't seem right. How do you know when to take the advice--even if it means a massive rewrite or reject the advice? This episode looks at the feedback dilemma many writers face.

The Importance of Character Stakes | Craft Great Characters | How to Make the Story Matter
A story must have stakes for the character, because without stakes it doesn't matter if the characters succeed or not. You can have a great plot but if there are no consequences for the characters, then your story will fall flat.

Why It's Very Important to Know Your Genre
Knowing, understanding, and embracing a specific genre no only helps you the writer create a better story, it's also extremely important to readers. And here are all the reasons why.
www.autumnbardot.com

Why you MUST HAVE a GREAT one-liner to describe your book
Writers need a one-line explanation of their book-- be it for an agent, TikTok, pitch, or just as a simple response to the "What's your book about" question. Is is difficult to write? Yes, in the beginning, because writers often think in terms of scenes, whereas most people just want an understanding of the book's premise.

When it’s time to provide writing feedback to your writing friend it can be difficult because you want to inspire and motivate them, not crush their soul. The hard truth is that many amateur writers do not want to be told that there are problems with the novel.
Let’s face it, revisions are frustrating, take a lot of time, and require understanding elements like characterization, dialogue, pacing, plot arc, showing vs telling, and more.
How do you approach the feedback?
What’s the first question to ask the writer? How do you determine how much feedback to give?

Write What You Know | What Does That Really Mean? | Writing Advice
Write what you know. That's the advice of many authors. Is it good writing advice? Does it limit what writers can write about? It sure sounds like it!
A story has conflict, characters, a character arc, and emotions all mixed into a great plot. Do we know anything about those things?
This episode breaks down the advice 'write what you know' and how to make it work for you.
A few of the genres I don't write because they are waaaay out of my wheelhouse: crime novels, police procedurals, thrillers involving tech/science, legal thrillers, and action/adventure.

3 First Draft Tips | Create Convincing Characters | Writer's Log in Real Time
Writing while holding a full-time job. Writing while taking care of household tasks. Writing while mom-ing. There isn't much time left over to write, which, let's face it, makes it difficult to maintain any kind of writing momentum. But it can be done!
Lots of writers do it. In fact, there are plenty of best-selling, traditionally published authors who still hold down a day job. Is it difficult? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely! In writer's log 4, I share some first draft issues, struggles to prevent future plot problems, and writing tips.

First Draft Process | Find Writing Time | Writing Log 3
Make the most out of writing time. Have a full-time job? Writing while working full-time is challenging. Sometimes it feels impossible. There just doesn't seem to be enough free time to write. And that job can be anything that takes up the bulk of your day like moms who write and caretakers. There is often almost no time to write. But it can be done! ( I'm on my 12th book.)
In this episode of Writers Log #3, I share how I wring every bit of writing time from my lunch 'hour,' which is really about 30 minutes, and how to make sure that Writing Time is used for actual writing and not staring into the creative abyss to figure out what to write. I call it Writing Go Time. Hi, I'm Autumn Bardot, a traditional and indie published author, mom, grand-mom, and full-time teacher who has A LOT to do after work. Between household tasks, walking the dog, and mom things ( like talking to my grown children when they call) my creative energy is zapped by evening. Of course, everyone's creative time and Writing Go Time is different, but maybe some of these writing tricks and tips will you get the very most of your writing time.
I also share a tip ( maybe you already know it) for writing about setting. Do you have a tip to get more out of your tiny bit of writing time? Let me know and leave a comment.

Your Inner Critic | Writing Problems
Hello writers! Do you have an inner writing critic? Do you listen to that inner critic? How much should we listen to our inner voice? Well, that depends on what kind of inner critic you have. Some have a soul-crushing ogre that makes you wonder if you should keep writing. Some have a Pollyanna, who believes that everything you write is amazing and perfect.
The problem with listening to those inner critics is that they keep you from growing as a writer and improving your novel. The trick is to find the Just Right inner critic. They're the best kind.
This episode looks at 3 basic inner critics and whether or not they can be helpful or harmful to your writing life.

Writing Step by Step | Writing Process | Start Writing a Novel | Writers Log #2
I just started writing my 13th book. This time I'm sharing all my writing struggles and problems. Why? To help new writers, beginner writers, and novice writers see the writing process in real life. I've been writing for ten years, and am a full-time literature and writing teacher. I also have a big family. Which means I have to fit in my passion for writing into an already very busy day.
Writing is my Zen, my happy place, so I am constantly striving to find ways to find writing time. Join me on my writing journey. As with every book, the story begins with an idea for plots and characters. I'm a plotter who also pants. The plot emerges as I write the story. Will it be different this time? Who knows?

Writer's Log | Inside the Writer's Mind | Personal Step-By-Step Writing Process in Real Time
There are lots of wonderful blogs, books, and videos that provide a step by step process to write a novel. This isn't one of them. Instead, this is my personal writing log. In real time.
My method works for me ( so far ) and I'm systematic and organized: however, the method, the process, can get messy and frustrating. I never know what snafus-- plot or real life--the day will throw at me. I work a full-time job and don't have the luxury of writing all day long. Writing while working--it's a challenge that many of us face. I've written 11 books, 10 of them fiction, which means my writing process evolved over time and is now pretty consistent. I know what to do at each step, but there's SO MUCH MORE that goes into each part of the writing process. Join me as I chronicle writing my next book. I'll keep it real, honest, and personal.

Why Writers Fail
Why do writers fail? Why do they give up writing their novel, story, screenplay, or book? It comes down to not having any or not having enough motivation and perseverance. Lacking motivation and perseverance makes writing a book or writing the next book a huge challenge. Writers may have lots of inspiration, but without motivation and perseverance, a great story or novel idea is going nowhere fast.
Take a deep look into the 3 elements of motivation--autonomy, mastery, and purpose--and how they pertain to writing a book. Which are you missing and why?
What is perseverance? What 3 writing and authoring obstacles must a writer overcome? How are difficulties, failure, and opposition preventing from persevering?
I also share the one thing I believe is critical to overcoming obstacles and persevering through all the struggles that writers face.

Vague Adjectives: Revision Tips #2
#writingtips #writingadvice #revisions
One of the most frequent new writer problems is writers using vague adjectives instead of specific, sensory, or emotion-packed words. How big is big? What makes something amazing? Does your story have a case of The Vague Adjective? Vague words are okay for first drafts, but revisions require helping the reader see, feel, touch, hear, taste, and experience your world. It's also a way to increase characterization, emotion, and conflict.
In this episode, we look at why you need to ditch vague adjectives and how to fix them.

Stop Stressing About Social Media

SYMBOLS: Is it in Your Writing Tool Box
#writingtips #writeanovel #symbolicwriting
Symbols. Do you have high school language arts flashbacks of your teacher saying 'this means that.' Symbolism is everywhere! It's nuanced. It has many shades and levels. 'This' doesn't necessarily mean 'that.' Symbols are much more complex, which means it's a versatile and nuanced literary device that can add depth and complexity to your story.
Symbols and their layered meanings act as a diving board into a deep pool of emotional, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual dynamics that you decide how to mold and manipulate. It’s just one more tool for your writing toolbox.

Common BOOK COVER PROBLEMS
#indieauthor #indiepublishing #authoryoutuber #writingyoutuber #authorpodcast #writingpodcast
If you're an indie author your book cover needs to look just as good as the big publishers' covers. That's the truth. Don't skimp on cover art and/or graphic design. Book covers matter. I see way too many indie covers that look indie. That's not good.
Readers DO judge a book by its cover. So you may have the most beautiful prose or the best story, but if your book cover isn't on point in regards to genre, then readers will swipe past it. If it looks amateur, readers will assume your writing is amateur.

QUERY Do's & Don'ts
#querynovel #authorshelpingwriters #authorpodcast #writingpodcast
You finished the novel. You revised it a thousand times. Now it's time to send the dreaded query letter to literary gents. If this is your first query, you know it's a confusing and frustrating process. Yet it may be the only reason that a literary agent decides to ask for a full or partial.
A query has to be more than perfect. It has to bait the agent and entice them enough to ask for more.
From your query alone, the literary agent can tell if you have excellent writing and author skills. No wonder writing a query is nerve-racking.
This episode shares the Do's and don'ts of the query letter. The more you know and understand what literary agents are looking for the better!

Rough Drafts | 3 Things You Need & 4 Things You Don't
#authorhelpingwriters #writingprocess #writingpodcast
Writing a novel is a step by step process. New and beginner writers often get bogged down with the first draft. That can cause a lot of frustration! The first draft is the skeleton of your story. It doesn't need to be perfect or even grammatically correct. After you get the first draft of your novel written, move on to the next step of the novel process. Because it's impossible to revise what isn't written.
In this episode I discuss what works for me, the 3 things in my first draft and the 4 things I don't worry about.

17 Reasons Why Authors Need to Network
#authorpodcast #authorhelpingwriters #writersnetwork
Networking, making connections, and growing your writing community with other authors and writers is more important than you may realize...or want to believe. Truth: writing a book is a solitary task, but writing friends can offer advice and support on the vast and confusing world of writing and publishing. Their experience can especially guide a beginner writer through the precess of rewrites, editing, querying, publishing, and platform building.
Author collectives, writing network, writing communities, Zoom groups, and review groups offer invaluable support and provide opportunities for so many different aspects of the writing and manuscript to book process. Social media is one great way to make, form, and cultivate author, reader, and reviewer connections. T
his episode discusses 17 reasons why writers , especially beginner writers, need to make time to engage, network with authors and writers, and build their writing community.

Enrich Your Writing with MEALTIME Symbolism
Oh, the drama of the family meal! People eating and drinking together is tasty with yummy symbolism. Why is that, you ask? In ancient times, sharing one’s meal symbolized hospitality and goodwill. Certain foods, drink, or days were associated with religious and social rituals. If one was breaking bread with someone, it indicated friendship, truce, partnership, or an alliance.
The human race hasn’t changed all that much. We still enjoy eating with those we like and avoid eating with those we don’t. Eating and/or fasting rituals are found in most religions. And I can’t think of a holiday that doesn’t center around food and eating. Or fasting and then eating.
Sharing food is an act of agreement, fellowship, and harmony. Writing a meal or eating scene is challenging, but can reveal much about the plot, characters, relationships, family dynamics, setting, or culture.

A novel critique is scary! Really scary! But getting one is important, especially for beginner writers. A good critique can take your novel or book to the next level. A good critique will explain what you need to improve to make your novel better.

Professional authors can offer valuable advice, tips, and tricks to make your book better. However, some writing critiques will do you no good because the writer isn't knowledgable enough or or have a lot of writing and publishing experience.
Writers can get 5 or 10 page critiques at writing conferences by editors and agents. I highly recommend that. Too scary? Don't be afraid of a novel critique.

Symbolic Architecture | Literary Symbolism
Symbolism in architecture. The ancients understood its symbolic importance. Modern architects will agree. The roof overhead, the window gazed through, the threshold walked across, all these structural features are designed to create an emotion and feeling. Which means architecture and all of its architectural elements can be used symbolically in novels and stories as well.
Architecture can amplify theme, foreshadow, plot, conflict, and characterization beyond the superficial.
Remember, symbolism is never ‘this means that.’ Symbols and their layered meanings act as a diving board into a deep pool of emotional, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual dynamics that YOU decide how to mold and manipulate. It’s just one more tool for your writing toolbox. Words are magic .Powerful magic. They’re imbued with symbolic meaning, nuance, subtext, connotation, and feelings found deep within our collective consciousness.
Discover ways to wave YOUR writing wand.
