 Mirrors are symbolic of vanity, truth clarity, illumination, distortion, and a reflection of one's soul. All of these can help you SHOW emotion, characterization, conflict, setting, worldview, and plot.   

Things to be considered if there's a mirror in your story: 

How does the character look into the mirror ( gaze, ponder, glance, stare, grimace, etc ) How is the mirror framed? 

Gilded, modern, minimalist, industrial, chipped?

 Is the glass ancient, new, distorted, clean, fogged, dirty? 

How big or small is the mirror? 

What else is reflected in the mirror? 

What is not reflected in the mirror?  

ALL these things can—if you chose—SHOW the character’s personality, emotion, setting, conflict, worldview, and more! Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the showiest of them all?

Books can mean so much more than just be symbolic for learning and knowledge. They can show emotion, conflict, setting, characterization. They can foreshadow too. It's all in what and how you use the book(s) in your story. Any detail that you include about the book can make your writing more purposeful and add nuance to your characters and story. 

 Books and all their little details can SHOW emotion, personality,  world views, societal views, without TELLING. And readers are smart-- they pick up on those clues instinctually.  

What's the title of the book in your story? How is the title important to the plot, character, and conflict?  Is the book old or new or ancient? Honestly, who doesn't love ancient wisdom?  Why exactly is the book forbidden? Or hidden? Or locked away? Or forgotten?  What does it really say about the characters or the setting or society? Is the book well-loved, dog-eared? Or is it in pristine condition? What extra clues do you want to give your readers by including a book in your plot?

Giving gifts is another way that writers can SHOW the desires, strengths, and needs of a character in your story. Showing is a clue into your character's personality so if you have a scene where they give a gift, consider what you would like to show your readers. Clothes can say a lot about a character, their mood, personality, culture, ambitions, personality, and much more if it's done for  purpose.  But beware, descriptions for no reason just add to word count. Go deep into your story’s setting with these hints for making it an immersive experience. Setting is important to character arc, conflict, themes, and so much more. It’s important to be there, in the space, feel the air, taste, touch and hear the setting that your characters are in.  It helps you add more depth and nuance to your characters and their conflict. 

Unfortunately most of us do not have the ability or opportunity to write in the place or time of our story.  But there are ways to get around that.

Writers and authors need to decide whether leaving a bad book review is the best course of action. There are lots of really great valid reasons why authors feel  they ought to leave a negative review--and I discuss that-- but  an author with a public platform is different than just any reader.

There are many traits that make a character evil, so make sure to include the evil traits that will help foreshadow and emphasize the villain in your story.  Everyone loves a villain--the badder the better--and readers love to hate them, but writing them can be tricky, especially if they're not obvious villains.

Why is it so hard for  new writers to get feedback on their manuscripts?  Manuscript feedback. It's a new writer problem. You really want some feedback but many author and writer friends hesitate to give it. It's not you. It's what a new writer is unwittingly asking of them.

Make the most out of writing time. Have a full-time job? Writing while working full-time is challenging. Sometimes it feels impossible. There just doesn't seem to be enough free time to write. And that job can be anything that takes up the bulk of your day like  moms who write and caretakers.  There is often almost no time to write. But  it can be done! ( I'm on my 12th book.)   

 In this episode of Writers Log #3, I share how I wring every bit of writing time from my lunch 'hour,' which is really about 30 minutes, and how to make sure that Writing Time is used for actual writing and not staring into the creative abyss to figure out what to write. I call it Writing Go Time.  Hi, I'm Autumn Bardot, a traditional  and indie published author, mom, grand-mom, and full-time teacher who has A LOT to do after work.  Hello writers! Do you have an inner writing critic? Do you listen to that inner critic? How much should we listen to our inner voice?   Well, that depends on what kind of inner critic you have.  Some have  a soul-crushing ogre that makes you wonder if you should keep writing.  Some have a Pollyanna, who believes that everything you write is amazing and perfect.  

The problem with listening to those inner critics is that they keep you from growing as a writer and improving your novel.   The trick is to find the Just Right inner critic. They're the best kind.

 My method works for me ( so far ) and I'm systematic and organized: however,  the method, the process, can get messy and frustrating. I never know what snafus-- plot or real life--the day will throw at me.  I work a full-time job and don't have the luxury of writing all day long. Why do writers fail? Why do they give up writing their novel, story, screenplay, or book?  It comes down to not having any or not having enough motivation and perseverance. Lacking motivation and perseverance  makes writing a book or writing the next book a huge challenge.  Writers may have lots of inspiration, but without motivation and perseverance, a great story or novel idea is going nowhere fast.  

Take a deep look into the 3 elements of motivation--autonomy, mastery, and purpose--and how they pertain to writing a book. Which are you missing and why?  

What is perseverance? What 3 writing and authoring obstacles must a writer overcome? How are difficulties, failure, and opposition preventing from persevering?

 If you're an indie author your book cover needs to look just as good as the  big publishers' covers. That's the truth. Don't skimp on cover art and/or graphic design. Book covers matter. I see way too many indie covers that look indie. That's not good. 

Readers DO judge a book by its cover. So you may have the most beautiful prose or the best story, but if your book cover isn't on point in regards to genre, then readers will swipe past it. If it looks amateur, readers will assume your writing is amateur.

Writing a novel is a step by step process. New and beginner writers often get bogged down with the first draft. That can cause a lot of frustration!  The first draft is the skeleton of your story.  It doesn't need to be perfect or even grammatically correct. After you get the first draft of your novel written,  move on to the next step of the novel process. Because it's impossible to revise what isn't written.

Writers have a lot to complain about. Writing a novel comes with all kinds of problems. There's so much we have to deal with,  manage, learn, and figure out.  Many writing and publishing issues we have no control over.  Admit it, writers like to whine.  That's okay. Sometimes a bit of whining and commiserating is good for a writer's soul.

Oh, the drama of the family meal! People eating and drinking together is tasty with yummy symbolism.  Why is that, you ask? In ancient times, sharing one’s meal symbolized hospitality and goodwill. Certain foods, drink, or days were associated with religious and social rituals.  If one was breaking bread with someone, it indicated friendship, truce, partnership, or an alliance. 

The human race hasn’t changed all that much. We still enjoy eating with those we like and avoid eating with those we don’t.  Eating and/or fasting rituals are found in most religions. And I can’t think of a holiday that doesn’t center around food and eating. Or fasting and then eating. 

Sharing food is an act of agreement, fellowship, and harmony.  Writing a meal or eating scene is challenging, but can reveal much about the plot, characters, relationships, family dynamics, setting, or culture.
