Bring a Higher Purpose Into Your Work With Rob Perez and DV8 | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 101

Bring a Higher Purpose Into Your Work With Rob Perez and DV8 | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 101

This is to prepare for the next episode, highlighting Rob's daughter, Sam Perez's book titled Deviate From Denial: Erasing the Stigma of Addiction and Recovery Through Inspirational Stories

With 30 years of restaurant experience, Rob Perez has seen first-hand how to build restaurant brands and how prevalent addiction is in the industry he loves. Along with his wife Diane, he founded Dv8 Kitchen as a social enterprise focused on giving second chance employment opportunities to people in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction through vocational, on-the-job training.

Dv8 Kitchen focuses on providing top-quality food, service, and atmosphere for every guest, and by providing “a better-than-expected” dining experience, the hope is to build a new standard for the second chance employee to live by and to change the way the guests perceive people in addiction recovery.

From the Coal Mining Community to the Startup Community | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 91

From the Coal Mining Community to the Startup Community | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 91

Justin Hall was born in Pikeville, KY in 1974. His parents had a Bluegrass Band and his father was an artist. Even though he grew up in the hills of eastern Kentucky where coal was king, it never interested him.

He loved the mountains, history, and heritage, but he had other interests.

Hall graduated from Elkhorn City High School in 1993 and Pikeville College (now UPike) in the summer of 1997. Shortly after graduating from UPike, he discovered an interest in web design and development.  The web held his attention and captivated his imagination.

In 2017, Justin was chosen as one of Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business for teaching a coal miner how to code and helping start Bit Source, a company located in eastern Kentucky that employs former coal miners as coders.  Currently, he is the Lead Instructor for Awesome Inc's Web Developer Bootcamp in Lexington, Kentucky.

He's also involved in several startups and entrepreneur efforts across the Commonwealth.

Harut Vardanyan is the CEO of HeXalayer with 11 years of experience in the nanotechnology & energy industry. He went through the 2017 Vogt Award accelerator based in Louisville, KY & the 2019 Ameren Accelerator.

So you know, current Li-ion batteries offer an insufficient amount of energy for their weight. Small & Medium UAVs can only fly 30-40 minutes without a payload and 15 minutes with a payload. A HeXalayer battery-powered vehicle will provide 3-4 times more energy for the same-weight battery (aka will be able to operate & travel longer without increasing the battery weight).

What Can Happen When Innovation Is a System | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 40

This episode is for innovators.

We invited one of Venture Lab’s closest friends, Ben Atkinson from Toyota, to talk about what innovation actually means (and about beat-up Toyota Camrys).

Ben explains that Luiz Pere-Breva’s definition, from his book, Innovating: A Doer’s Manifesto..., “Bringing parts and people together, to solve a problem in a novel way.” gets us partway to a clear understanding of what innovation is...it’s solving problems in new ways.

But, if we apply some systems thinking to this definition, we arrive at a much more useful definition.

If you care about innovation and are looking for a more effective way to talk about it, this episode is for you.

What High Schools Can Learn From Teenage Entrepreneurs (Part 2) | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 34

Natasha Sams dives into what it took to make a Kentucky teacher become an innovation leader for the Commonwealth's future entrepreneurs.

The Governor's School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) identifies and enables Kentucky high school students to become our Commonwealth's next generation of entrepreneurs. Through our three-week residential experience, GSE participants from throughout the Commonwealth are: 1) introduced to KY's most successful entrepreneurs and fastest-growing businesses, 2) equipped with the tools and skills to create and build their own businesses, and 3) matched with complementary skilled peers to develop business plans and product or service prototypes.

The annual GSE intensive program culminates in a pitch competition attended by a large audience representing Kentucky's entrepreneurial ecosystem. In addition, as a direct result of their participation in GSE, participants qualify for some $3 million of scholarships from Kentucky's universities and colleges. Over 500 young Kentuckians have graduated from GSE since our inception in 2013.

While all participants gain vital entrepreneurial skills through the program to use as they enter the workplace or continue into higher education, 11 new businesses have already been launched by young entrepreneurs. Others have filed for multiple patents and developed new ideas and relationships that sow the seeds for more business formation. Many alumni have chosen to enroll in entrepreneurial programs at Kentucky universities and attribute this decision to the inspiration they received while attending GSE in high school.

Building Your Brand Helps With Storytelling | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 29

Adam Brown is the creative director and founder of Marrow: a brand design agency for challenger brands and startups that give a damn. Call him a design zealot, a provocateur, or—if you’re his mother-in-law—a BS artist. With Adam, brands embrace empathy as a strategy, value audacity over relevance, and commit unequivocally to the remarkable.

Clients include a craft distillery, a brewery, a coffee roaster, a couple of private colleges, a killer video game publisher, an investigative research company (not spies), contractors, an international design-build firm, a public school system, a fine dining and event caterer, a national flower grower, social causes, non-profit organizations, his mother-in-law, and the very smart people who helped Apple build Siri.

He’s good at lots of things, but he’s most at home in front of clients guiding strategy or behind his computer making something amazing for people who aren’t so easily satisfied. Like his mother-in-law.

Foster Love by Keeping a Watchful Eye for Others' Safety | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 28

In 2015, the city of Louisville, KY noticed a big problem: half of all fires involving two or more buildings involved an abandoned property. The city recognized the threat to families and challenged the community to make a solution – and they did.

Meet CASPER! CASPER and its suite of sensors constantly monitor abandoned properties for events like smoke detector sirens, break-ins, and floods. When a potentially dangerous event occurs, CASPER alerts both neighbors and emergency services so situations don’t turn into catastrophes.

Better yet, through the CASPER Portal, neighbors and city officials can better understand and address activities happening in vacant and abandoned properties by looking at historical activity data.

Nathan Armentrout, CEO, and founder, with his team of civic hackers, developed CASPER and soon after piloted 10 devices across 15 homes for six months, culminating in over 100 successful tests, two real-life confirmed detections, and zero false positives. Following the success of the pilot, Louisville is expanding the program to more homes to ensure the safety of all Louisville families living next to abandoned homes.

Why Community Engagement Is Vital for a Successful Business | Awesome Inc Podcast - Episode 26

Brian Raney shares what started his vision of creating a startup community in Lexington, KY.

In 2009, a few college friends came together to bring to life an idea. They believed in the potential for Lexington to be a creative, innovative, welcoming community that helped anyone and everyone pursue their definition of “awesome.”

This has meant many things over the years (remind us to tell you sometime about Awesome Wedding Engagements and Awesome Airlines), but today it means building the tech and startup community in Central Kentucky.

Awesome Inc was founded on the basis of the "give-first" mentality and has grown to be the epicenter for anything related to technology or startups. We strive to make Lexington a better place to live and work, one Oreo at a time.

Our Mission: To help people pursue their definition of Awesome

Our Vision: We do that by growing the tech and entrepreneurial community in Central Kentucky

Our Method: Grow our community by providing the resources, connections, and a space to make it happen.

Brian shares his lessons learned and the struggles that he faced early on (over a decade ago!), which shaped our community into what it is today.
