be nikki | how to talk to animals

be nikki | how to talk to animals

Nikki Vasconez’s (she/her) career path started out as an attorney. Each day on her way to court, she would stop and hang out with the birds. She always talked to them like they understood her. Turns out… they DID understand her, and they also understand you!

Nikki did not grow up having two-way conversations with animals. As a young child, she enjoyed the presence of her many hamster, bunny, and guinea pig companions, but her communication with them consisted of unintentionally poking their eyeballs, pulling their tails, and hugging them a little too hard. It wasn’t until her late twenties that she learned animal communication was even possible!

One summer morning, it all started. At 7:00 AM, a blackbird in Nikki’s backyard said: “Hey! HEY, YOU!” She looked up at him and he said: “Yes, You! Hello!” “Me?” She responded. “Well, there’s no one else around is there?” Nikki sat speechlessly. Eventually, she said: “Show me what you do for fun!” He responded: “Now is not time for play. I’m working. I’ll be back at 3:00 PM to show you.” Nikki asked how she would know it was him, and he said he’d land on the exact same branch. He then let out the loudest, most unique sound Nikki had ever heard and flew away.

At 2:58 PM, a red robin landed on the fence right in front of Nikki and said: “Blackbird is going to be late. He’ll be here at 3:04.” She was lying on her deck waiting and at 3:04 she heard the same loud cry from that morning. She looked up and there he was on the exact same branch! He said: “Watch! This is what I do for fun!” He started jumping up vertically, branch after branch. He jumped up 3 levels and then back down and did it all over again. “See you tomorrow at 7 AM!” he said, then flew away.

The next 3 mornings he appeared on his branch at 7:00 AM, let out his cry to get Nikki’s attention, jumped up 3 levels, and flew away. This is the moment Nikki stopped doubting her abilities and allowed herself to accept and trust that she CAN communicate with animals.

be jamie | OCD, broken glass, and the 1800s

Jamie McGillen (she/her) lives in the shadow of Mount Rainier, and no matter how many times she moves away, it draws her home. Everything about large evergreen trees delights her, except how poky they are… and the sap.

Her most recent book In the Heart of Paradise is the third book in the Rainier Series, which is historical fiction series set in Washington State. Here’s the synopsis:

When Anna discovers she's pregnant, it doesn't feel as wonderful as she'd imagined. She quickly feels trapped between the doctors blaming her for her morning sickness, older women wanting her to stay home, and very real risks to her baby. She's caught between protecting her family and living a fulfilling life-an an impossible choice. Anna's new friend Elizabeth is reeling from an unexpected loss, and she believes her nervous tendencies are getting worse. Her thoughts have always been strange, and the threat of ending up in an insane asylum is never far from her mind. When she meets a handsome stranger on the train, she wonders if she can simply keep her "fits of mania" to herself. But when she develops a phobia, she'll have to face her most dreaded fear to save what she loves most.

The moment Shazli Kojak (she/her) found out she was pregnant, she read every book she could get her hands on about sleep training. After constantly being told that she can "kiss her sleep goodbye" once her baby arrived, she became obsessed with figuring out how to not become another over-tired mom who can only dream (with her eyes open) about sleep. Making sure she and her baby would be well-rested became her top priority. While on this mission to teach her daughter healthy sleep habits, she decided to get a certification in the field so that she can help other moms do the same.

be laurel | mystery writing solved

be laurel | mystery writing solved

One eighth grade afternoon, a bully on the bus was worse to Laurel S. Peterson (she/her) than usual, so she went home and wrote a story of revenge in her journal. What satisfaction to leave her bleeding (on paper, of course!) on the playground. Thus was born her career as a mystery writer. In college, Laurel majored in psychology, fascinated by what motivates us (or doesn’t). After college, she tested the waters in advertising, catering, retail, and sales, salting away character details in her journals. Then, she did an MFA and entered the world of academic politics, where she currently resides writing poetry and mysteries, and grading papers. Her book Shadow Notes is the first in the Clara Montague Mysteries.

When her earliest childhood friend is diagnosed with a terminal illness, award-winning author Barbara Becker (she/her) sets off on a quest to immerse herself in what it really means to be mortal. Can we live our lives more fully knowing someday we will die? With a keen eye towards that which makes life worth living, interfaith minister, mom, and perpetual seeker, Barbara recounts stories where life and death intersect in unexpected ways. She volunteers on a hospice floor, becomes an eager student of the many ways people find meaning at the end of life, and accompanies her parents in their final days. But most of all, Barbara inspires readers to live with the end in mind and proves that turning toward loss rather than away from it is the only true way to live life to its fullest.

be thai-anh | the right place at the right time

Co-Founder & CEO of EmBeba Thai-Anh Hoang (she/her) has a passion for helping families with skin irritations.

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, it seemed natural for Thai-Anh to have the urge to start her own business -- although being raised in an Asian family she was encouraged to be a doctor or lawyer. ;) Alas, a fear of needles put to rest her desire to become a doctor. Instead, she studied and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business with a minor in the French language (although the most she can read in French currently is probably a Parisian menu). In a past life, one prior to creating EmBeba, Thai-Anh was an experienced executive helping fortune 500 companies harness the power of data analytics for their business decisions.

In addition to being an entrepreneur, Thai-Anh is a mom of two who enjoys gardening, designing, reading, and cooking. She is self-described as “an old person in a young body,” and can often be found pouring over seed catalogs, IKEA magazines, and architectural digests. She also has a slight obsession with van life and tiny homes.

Thai-Anh’s interest in the medical field never faded, especially her passion for helping other families with skin irritations, and combining that with her degree, her entrepreneurial spirit, and her love of design, EmBeba has come to life.

Raised by evangelicals on a farm in rural Tennessee, Micah Stover (she/her) is now far from home in Mexico where she resides with her family and works as an integrative support therapist with trauma survivors. Micah is currently writing and revising a memoir, chronicling the path to heal intergenerational trauma and PTSD with MDMA, psilocybin, and guided psychotherapy.

Micah’s forthcoming prescriptive memoir due in Fall 2022 takes the reader on an epic journey from the near loss of her son in the NICU through an ancestral underground riddled with trauma. Divided into three parts, the memoir’s structure mirrors the arc of the psychedelic healing journey beginning with preparation, moving into the psychedelic world, and finally emerging into the new landscape of integration. It balances theory, instruction, exercises, and narrative to help the reader walk away with a visceral understanding of how to pursue this healing path and what it might entail.

Here's how Lauren Franco, a.k.a "Lo" (she/her) describes herself: I am stumbling. I am running and tripping and leaping and falling, messy and unkempt and pristine and put-together all at the same time. Life doesn't cease to amaze me in this way. The fact that it can somehow allow us to be all of these things, and still manage to survive and smile. But I suppose if you're looking for some sort of biography, these strung together words might grant you some semblance of who I am: So-Cal born and bred New Yorker. Jesus-lover. Justice-fighter. Coffee-addict. Lipstick aficionado. Writer. Actress. Singer. Worship leader. Songwriter. Dancer. Obsessive picture-taker. Avid fruit-consumer.

be marisa | tarot is more than fortune telling

be marisa | tarot is more than fortune telling

Marisa Difrisco (she/her) has had an interest in tarot since she was a kid. She’s spent endless subway commutes quizzing herself on the meanings of the cards, but her true learning really started when she began to read for others. Her public tarot practice began in the summer of 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. As a New Yorker under strict quarantine, she had a lot of extra time but lacked a sense of purpose. She felt helpless as she watched front line and essential workers risk their lives every day while she sat at home in her sweatpants scrolling through the news. While the Brooklyn Mental Wealth Instagram was born out of a need to preserve Marisa’s own mental health, it quickly grew into a platform where she could use her tarot learnings to help others with their own goals and challenges. She now reads for people daily and donates 25% of all her profits to The Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM).

be ashleigh | the world's worst attempted swingers

Ashleigh Renard (she/her) has built a committed mass-following who tune in daily for her fresh, no-fuss advice on everything from keeping monogamy hot, to renegotiating a marriage, to getting kids to clean the house (because nothing makes her prouder than child labor). With plenty of humor, her down-to-earth voice tackles topics that are relatable to anyone struggling with the awkwardness of living in a meat suit at Earth School. She resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her husband Manny, their three children, a cat, and a dog. As a child, she thought "Pennsylvania the most unfortunately named state, too similar to Transylvania." To her delight, it has ample sunlight and a remarkably low population of vampires. Her debut book, SWING – A Memoir of Doing it All will be available May 2021. Use this link to pre-order it and get the audiobook for free: ashleighrenard.com/swing

Sara Breen (she/her) is an early education teacher based in Massachusetts (and one of my closest pals). After receiving her degree in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Sara went on to discover her passion for early childhood education through teaching preschool. Inspired by the adversity she faced as a kid due to her learning disabilities, Sara's experience now motivates her to create a safe and accepting space for her students. When she’s not discussing mental health or advocating for the latest social justice issue, you can find Sara playing with her new kittens Doc and Virgil, hanging out with her partner Ian or perfecting her curly hair with the curly girl method.

Today we have a very special guest to launch our podcast- our friend Angi. Angi Smolik (they/them) is one of the most resilient people we have ever met. They are as hilarious as they are kind, and on top of it all, they're a total badass. Honestly, we can't think of a better person to teach you more about resilience! In this episode, we dive into Angi's PTSD diagnosis, how we told their abusive ex-husband that they want a divorce, and what's giving them hope. I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire us.
