#47 - The Role of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth) and Disordered Eating with Alexa Ress (@SeekingGutHealth)
People struggling with IBS are at a higher risk of struggling with binge eating - but which worsens which? IBS worsens binge eating by encouraging you to avoid meals if you're in pain or worries of bloating or binge eating which can intensify bloating, abdominal pain, and stool habits?
But what if we learned that IBS is not the end-all and that apparently a good portion of people who are 'diagnosed' with IBS actually have SIBO which is Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth - which is a fairly common condition with very similar symptoms.
I speak with Alexa Ress who is a gut health expert on SIBO on:
- The prevalence of SIBO and misdiagnosis of IBS and SIBO
- How SIBO is tested and how SIBO can possibly be treated
- Helpful habits to prevent or improve a disrupted gut if you struggle with disordered eating habits

#21 - I Struggle with Binge Eating but I Need to Lose Weight For my Health Condition to Improve!
#21 - I Struggle with Binge Eating but I Need to Lose Weight For my Health Condition to Improve!
Binge eating recovery requires you to let go of restrictions and dieting is a massive form of restriction. So what do you do if you need to lose weight but you're stuck being torn between binge eating recovery and losing weight for your health? Let's get stuck in to this episode of binge dietitian podcast!
The 3 Tips I would recommend to reduce binge eating but also improve your health:
#1 Try to incorporate regular meals and snacks into your diet + honour your hunger. Binge eating is a signal from our body that there are unmet needs that need to be met - often times, we binge eat because we are so deprived psychologically by restricting the foods we love or even whole food groups such as sugar or carbs - or we are depriving ourselves physically so we become so hungry we have an intense urge to binge! So including regular meals and snacks - your breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, and dinner would calm your hunger pangs down and include foods you enjoy throughout the day to reduce the craving for them.
#2 Incorporate healthy habits to improve your health markers. Studies show that if you incorporate healthy habits such as increasing, fruit and veg intake, daily physical activity, consuming alcohol moderately, and not smoking, you can be metabolically healthy despite your weight.
#3 If you choose to lose weight still, remember that you will have to tackle binge eating first in most cases before chasing weight loss. Struggling with binge eating and restricting is a never-ending battle but once you escape the cycle of bingeing and restricting, you will be in a much more sustainable, healthy relationship with food to reach your goals of weight loss.

#20 - 'I'm Eating the Foods I Crave But I'm Still Bingeing' - What to Do
#20 - 'I'm Eating the Foods I Crave But I'm Still Bingeing' - What to Do
One of the key points to reduce your binge episodes is to start to give yourself permission to eat the foods you crave - these could be your trigger foods, binge foods, or the foods you enjoy but you have been restricting them. But what if you are having them already but you still find yourself binge eating? This is likely because there is still restriction lurking in the background
Here are the 3 tips I would want you to review if you're having the foods you crave but you're still bingeing
1. Are you still experiencing physical restriction? Are you skipping meals intentionally? Are you eating every 3-4 hours? This could look like having breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, and your dinner consistently - yes even if you binge try to get back on track with regular eating!
2. Are you weighing yourself more than once a week? Weighing ourselves more than once a week or actually at all, can make us lose sight of what true binge eating recovery progress looks like.
3. Are you still setting diet rules? Do you tell yourself that you should avoid bad foods and eat only good foods especially after a binge? Do you set promises or strict goals that you’ll work harder to follow your strict diet? Diet rules contributes to a restriction mentality which can later on down the line make us have an increased craving to binge.

#18 - Binge Eating but Also Struggle with IBS? Here are 3 Things You Can Do
#18 - Binge Eating but Also Struggle with IBS? Here are 3 Things You Can Do
Struggling with Binge Eating is already a battle in itself but what if you struggle with IBS? It may seem like you've been dealt a bad hand - what is causing the issue? Is the IBS worsening the binge eating or the binge eating worsening the IBS? *It is also important to make sure that your IBS is diagnosed by your doctor as we cannot self-diagnose IBS. There is no diagnostic test for IBS but if you are having gut symptoms similar to IBS such as bloating, abdominal cramping, and changing in stool habit, speak to your doctor in order for them to first rule out any other gastrointestinal conditions. The 3 tips that will help improve your IBS and binge eating:
1. Ensure you are eating regular meals and avoid skipping meals – Aim for 3 meals a day and snacks in between consistently – breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, evening meal, and maybe an evening snack. Evidence shows this is effective in helping reduce IBS symptoms and hunger.
2. Pay attention to your stress levels – The gut and our brain are very closely linked and people with IBS have gut hypersensitivity. A stressful episode can lead to worsened IBS symptoms and make us more vulnerable to a binge episode.
3. Avoid making any drastic changes to your diet – Avoid going on certain diets or avoid going from one extreme to another such as a binge to eating only vegetables and fruits! I would like to say that our guts love consistency so aim for a sustainable diet that you enjoy!

#9 - Losing Motivation for Binge Eating Recovery? - Here Are 3 Ways to Measure Your Progress
#9 - Losing Motivation for Binge Eating Recovery? - Here Are 3 Ways to Measure Your Progress
Do you find yourself constantly bingeing even though you seem like you are doing all the right things? That can be frustrating and I completely understand why you could feel that way. I want you to know that you may have had some progress. Progress is not found in a number which we have been told by media and diet culture to aim for.
Binge eating progress is found in these:
1. How long are the gaps in between your binges?
2. How do you feel around food? Are fear foods starting to turn into 'neutral' or 'safe' foods?
3. Do you start to notice yourself detaching yourself from numbers such as the number on the scale or your clothes size?

#3 - What to Do When You Can't Let Go of Losing Weight
#3 - What to Do When You Can't Let Go of Losing Weight
As discussed in episode #2 - The 3 Main Triggers of Binge Eating and How to Stop Them, one of the greatest things you can do to stop binge eating is to stop chasing weight loss - at least for now until your binge eating stops.
This is because dieting which consists of physical and mental restriction can fuel the urge to binge. To get back on track with 'regular eating', we have to stop chasing dieting. But what should you do if you can't let go of trying to lose weight?
In this episode, we will go through 3 points to think about when you can't let go of losing weight
1. What has happened for you to be fed up with losing weight?
2. Where has trying to lose weight whilst bingeing led you to?
3. What has trying to lose weight cost you?
Hello! My name is Jonathan Sumner, the Binge Dietitian! In this first pilot podcast, I will discuss my personal lowest moment when I struggled with binge eating and how it led me to help women and men with binge eating recovery.
We will go though and discuss the 3 Reasons Why We Should Break the Taboo of Not Talking about Binge Eating: Binge eating is so normalised in society that people do not see it as a problem It can negatively affect peoples quality of life. It can affect relationships with loved ones and worsen medical conditions. Binge Eating is almost always associated with secrecy and guilt.
