Join our Halloween-themed book club!
The podcast might be winding down at the end of the year, but we're still planning to fit in a couple more book club discussions, starting with a special Halloween-themed pick!
This month we're reading a graphic novel: Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, illustrated by Lisa Sterle.
Here's what you need to know from the blurb:
Pretty Little Liars meets Teen Wolf in this sharply funny, and patriarchy-smashing graphic novel from author Maggie Tokuda-Hall and artist Lisa Sterle.
When the new girl is invited to join her high school’s most popular clique, she can’t believe her luck—and she can’t believe their secret, either.
When Becca transfers to a high school in an elite San Francisco suburb, she’s worried she’s not going to fit in. To her surprise, she’s immediately adopted by the most popular girls in school. At first glance, Marley, Arianna, and Mandy are perfect. But at a party under a full moon, Becca learns that they also have a big secret.
Becca’s new friends are werewolves. Their prey? Slimy boys who take advantage of unsuspecting girls. Eager to be accepted, Becca allows her friends to turn her into a werewolf, and finally, for the first time in her life, she feels like she truly belongs.
But then things get complicated. As their pack begins to buckle under the pressure, their moral high ground gets muddier and muddier—and Becca realizes that she might have feelings for one of her new best friends.

The book club discussion will be released at the end of next week — just in time for the Halloween weekend!

Book Club: 'All My Rage' by Sabaa Tahir
We're re-introducing our YA book club!
Sabaa Tahir's latest novel, All My Rage, is the first book we're kicking our 2022 book club off with. This newly-released contemporary might as well be crowned a YA classic. It's easily one of the best books we've read on the show. Exploring the lives of a Pakistani community through the eyes of two young protagonists, this book confronts trauma, grief, family and forgiveness in a way that rings authentic. We love this book!

Chronic illness and authenticity with Heather Kamins ('The Moth Girl')
Anna isn't unlike the other girls her age, except for her recent diagnosis: the fictional disease of lepidopsy. Suddenly, the life she once knew begins to drift away — literally. Her disease causes her to physically float, amidst other moth-like symptoms such as craving light. Now Anna is forced to come to terms with her new reality, while still trying to hold onto the life she's always known.
Such is the story found in the new YA novel The Moth Girl by Heather Kamins. Heather drew from her own experience with Lupus to write Anna's story — a story she started writing in 2012. For Heather, staying authentic to the true experiences of chronic illness was front and center of her mind.
Heather joins Bookstacked writer Chelsea Regan to discuss how she approached such an important topic.

Young adult books are getting something of a renaissance when it comes to film and TV adaptations these days. An exciting sci-fi fantasy, this book challenges readers' expectations by adding exciting twists to tired YA tropes while challenging the problematic aspects of today's society, especially where patriarchal systems and misogyny are concerned.

Every year thousands of writers around the world challenge themselves to write a 50,000-word novel in a month. This event, National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo), is a favorite of ours!
Bookstacked writer Chelsea Regan took on the challenge last year, blogging about her experience for Bookstacked. Fellow team members Michael Burns and Saul Marquez have also attempted the challenge.
We hope you don't mind if we turn our focus to writing instead of reading this month, as we discuss some of the challenges and benefits of participating in NaNoWriMo!

And our final book club pick of the year is …
We're closing out the year with a final book club pick: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao.
As with all our book club picks, we're focusing on books that highlight underrepresented authors, characters and issues. We've already read two powerful books in 2021: Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas and Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.
We're excited to continue with this science-fiction YA novel from a debut author.
About Iron Widow:
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

If Peyton wants to win a scholarship to her dream culinary school, she'll need to navigate through harsh judges, aggressive competitors — and even a love triangle.
Sarah J. Schmitt joins Chelsea Regan and takes us behind the scenes of Where There's a Whisk.

Do audiobooks count as reading?
We're bringing the great debate to our podcast and asking the question, do audiobooks count as reading? Bookstacked writer Michael Burns dived into the history and culture around audiobooks in a recent article, and we decided to dissect it on the show.
When's the best time to listen to audiobooks? Is the audiobook ever better than the book itself? How much of an impact does a narrator have on an audiobook? What audiobook recommendations do we have? There's plenty to discuss in this episode!

Introducing our Summer YA book club pick
By way of information, we want to announce to our readers and listeners that we are continuing the Bookmarked YA Book Club we started earlier this year!
In February, we read Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas. We posted our status updates on Twitter and Instagram and then got members of the Bookstacked Team together to discuss the book on our podcast, Bookmarked. The podcast will continue as the home of the book club. We've settled on selecting four book club picks every year — one for each season. We missed out on Spring this year, but we're excited to jump into Summer with a new book club pick.
For the month of July, our book club pick is Legendborn by Tracy Deonn.
Here's how it works:
- Members of the Bookstacked Team are already reading Legendborn. They'll be sharing their thoughts on the book via social media posts using #BookmarkedYA.
- If you want to join our conversations, you can also post on Twitter and Instagram using #BookmarkedYA.
- At the end of July, we'll drop a book club discussion episode in the Bookmarked podcast feed. #BookmarkedYA comments and posts from listeners and readers will be incorporated in the discussion (so be sure to post if you want your voice included in the episode!)
We'll see you in July!
About Legendborn:
After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.
A flying demon feeding on human energies.
A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.
And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.
The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.
She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

Netflix's adaptation of 'Shadow and Bone' might be one of those rare occasions where the show turned out to be better than the book. *GASP!* We know, we know — it's blasphemy! But we still appreciated many of the changes to the source material, especially when those changes mean more screen time for our favorite Crows.

Retelling Cinderella ... but with Quidditch, with Anna Meriano ('This is How We Fly')
Quidditch is a real thing ... sort of. It might not be the magical experience many know, but athletes across the world have transformed the once-fictional activity into a real and authentic sport. It's behind that backdrop that author Anna Meriano has penned her young adult novel, This Is How We Fly.
Meriano sits down with Bookstacked writer Chelsea Regan to discuss her new book in this special bonus episode of the podcast.
