Break in our Nuts
Hello, friends! We are taking a break! It's not you, it's us, we promise.
As you all know, we are an indie pod, and both of us have full-time jobs. At the moment, other things beyond those full-time jobs have been draining our time and we just can't deliver a good episode for the next few weeks. We are coming back! In two months! With brand new episodes!
Meanwhile, listen to our previous ones, stay safe, take care of yourself and each other and remember we love you!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielienski for our graphic design and the essential workers keeping us safe. And you, our beautiful, brilliant listeners

From trans to eternity: João W. Nery and trans identity as a right in Brazil
Hey, friends! It's Pride Month *everywhere* and Larissa has finally been able to do an episode on the date of something! This week we talk about João W. Nery, trans activist in Brazil and first man to receive gender confirmation in Brazil, and his importance in ensuring the rights of trans people to have access to adequate identification that doesn't misidentify them.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. A special thanks to all who have fought and are fighting for LGBTQI+ rights all over the world.

Bad translations with Justine Houyaux
Hi, friends! Sorry we're late!
This week we had a wonderful guest, translation expert Justine Houyaux! And when we have cool people on the pod, of course, we like to make them play a silly game! So Larissa rounded up a bunch of Brazilian expressions and asked Justine to guess what they meant - Gareth gave his best shot?
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielisnki for our graphic design and the essential workers out there keeping us safe!

The inner workings of Eurovision and Brazilian corruption

Tractorgate and another violent Abolition Day
Hi, friends! We're so sorry we were gone last week, with no warning! Totally Larissa's fault!
We hope you are safe and well. This week we continue talking about corruption and other crimes, as police violence continues being awful in Brazil against black people. So, content warning for the final minutes of the episode, ok?
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

The Petrobrás of it all

Save the Census

Bizarro Bills of Brazil
Hello, everyone! This week we wanted to go light and fluffy - but this is still (mostly) a Brazilian politics podcast, so we just went for lowbrow comedy instead.
Enjoy the Bizarro Bills of Brazil! Never will a night's sleep be peaceful because now you'll have these babies to keep you up at night!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

A Covid update for Brazil
Hello, friends! We got a nice, light topic this weekend. As David Tennant cracks jokes for the BBC about the genocide going on in Brazil due to the mismanagement of the pandemic, a joke that would never have happened about the United States, it becomes obvious that updating our audience with actual data is definitely of the highest order.
We talk current numbers, vaccination obstacles, the 4th health minister, the Parliamentary Commission for Inquiry, and the day when Brazil vaccinated 18 million children in one go against polio.
As always, we wanna thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all the essential workers keeping us safe. To the staff working on the vaccine at the Federal University of Minas Gerais: good luck and may all the gods and goddesses bless you. To the people who are packaging or making deliveries so that the rest of us can stay home: we have no words. May the world be kind to you.

Welsh Nuts: Ble Mae Thrones (Part 2 of the story of Owain Glyndwr)
Hello, friends! This week, Gareth finishes the riveting story of Owain Glyndwr and the last battle of the Welsh against the English!
And, for our one year anniversary (!!!) we opened our very own RedBubble shop! Ain't that cool??? For now, it's just the logo on a sticker, magnet, and pin options, but we'll branch out soon enough. Let us know what you'd like to see!
More than ever we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

Welsh Nuts: Ble Mae Thrones (or the story of Owain Glyndwr)
Hello, everyone! This week's episode is a Welsh Nuts episode, the story of the last stand of the Welsh against the English! And it's only part 1, so stay tuned!
As our one year anniversary is upon us we wanna thank you for your friendship and support. We do this out of love and the love we get back means everything to us!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

Bandits on my teledu (or Netflix's Killer Ratings)
Hi, friends! So, for this week, Larissa and Gareth decided to torture themselves by watching the Netflix docu-series (ugh) 'Killer Ratings'. We did it out of love, so now you don't have to!
The series is a poor attempt to document the (alleged) crimes of Wallace Souza and his ring, killing drug dealers so they could then drug deal and using the images of the killings to bump up Souza's crime-fighting TV show. It was definitely a bad effort in displaying the worst of Brazil. So, thanks, guys.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. And a special thanks to the Butantan Institute for starting phases 1 and 2 trials of a fully Brazilian vaccine, on track to helping millions. The best of Brazil right there.

That Lula fella, he's going places
Next week we're gonna talk about Netflix's docu-series 'Killer Ratings', if you wanna have a look at that and have ALL THE OPINIONS!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and the essential workers keep all of us safe. And you, our lovely listener.

Truth AND consequences: A Brazil Nuts Quiz with Isaac Goff-Mitchell
Hi, everyone! Today's episode is a bit of a treat: we got our friend, Isaac Goff-Mitchell, from The Youth Vote podcast to play a game with us, pinning our very own Gareth Davies against him!
So stay tuned for a high stakes match of the Brazil Nuts Quiz (we should totally trademark that)!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. And Isaac, for being such a good sport!

Partying with politics - marching nuts (Part 2)
Hello, everyone! Finally, we are back with part 2 of our episode on Carnaval and politics!
Very sorry for Gareth's technical difficulties. Anyway, today we talk marchinhas and how they often take political meaning in hilarious ways.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers out there keeping us safe.

Carnaval: Partying with politics (Part 1)
Hi, everyone!
Today's episode is about how political Carnaval can be, so much so that we made it into a two-parter! And since it is also a BIG topic, we talked about the Carnaval in Belo Horizonte, where Larissa lives. Of course, with festivities cancelled this year - for a very good reason - this is very bittersweet.
This week was also Larissa's birthday, so like, share, subscribe, and write nice reviews ONLY to make her happy!
Larissa and Gareth would like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers, keeping us safe. Especially the lady at the pharmacy who pushed a nasal swab into Larissa's brain to make sure she was Covid-free.

And it would've been fine if it weren't for those meddling Kochs!
Hi, everyone! Happy weekend!
For this episode we dive into to the Free Brazil Movement, or MBL, an extreme right-wing organisation that is linked to other organisations that are funded by the Koch brothers. Well, Koch brother now. Rising out of nowhere in late 2013, the MBL was a major player in gathering popular support for the coup against President Dilma Rousseff and it's still a major player in the distribution of fake news in Brazil.
We also talked about the proper disposal of wipes. In the bin, people!
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

The Brazilian Federation for Female Progress and Bertha Lutz
Hello, everyone! Sorry we're a bit late!
This week Larissa and Gareth talk about Gareth's possible alien heritage, the Brazilian Federation for Female Progress, and its leader Bertha Lutz. And Larissa makes a big announcement (that everyone possibly already knows)!
Watch out for the volume at the beginning, ok?
We'd also like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. And you, our wonderful listeners!

Welsh Nuts: Larissa does (a) Wales (pub quiz)
Hi, everyone!
Because the world is weird, Larissa might soon be moving to Wales! With that in mind, Gareth decided to torture her with questions he knew she couldn't answer and badger her into the above title for which she found a suitable compromise. This pub quiz in no way reflect Larissa's abilities and she was NOT allowed to study for it.
Also listen for weird Brazilian news, like the woman tried to crowdfund with the whole country to buy off federal deputies into voting for an impeachment.
Thank you for listening! We'd also like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

Nut of Knowledge: The one where celebs go Braziling
Hey, everyone! Welcome to this week's episode!
On this episode we talk about international celebrities that decided, for better or worse, to meddle in Brazilian politics! And, for some reason, Jeb Bush (please clap).
Check out our website later for shownotes!
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. #stayhome #vaccinationsrule

State of your Nuts: Amazonas

Nut of Knowledge: The one with the Welsh in Brazil (and Patagonia)
Hey, friends! We're back! And better than ever!
On this episode we discuss a woman who does NOT predict the future with aspargus and some Welsh attempts at preserving their culture intact in South America.
We missed this so much!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. Sending a special shout out to everyone working on the vaccines, research, distribution, application, voluteering! You're all amazing.

The one with the Christmas bonus episode!
Merry Christmas, everyone! And Winter Solstice! And all of our end-of-year celebrations!
Now, you didn't think we'd leaving hanging, did you? As promised, here's Larissa's "I met Steve Guttenberg!" story.
Talk to you in 2021!

The one with all the gushing and the end of our season!
Hi, everyone! Of course we're late for the last episode of the year!
But we come bearing the answers to your questions while we sip our wine and spread our cheer! This year has been rough, but it has also brought us together: Gareth and Larissa became friends and then started a podcast to become friends with the world. Every day is a rollercoaster, but at least we can count on each other. Even if it's a day late.
We love you! Happy Holidays and we'll talk to you next year!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design. We'd also like to thank essential workers, biomedical researchers, and vaccine volunteers. We also wanna thank the political activists who have kept the fight going despite the danger. #stayhome #wearamask #blacklivesmatter

Nut of Knowledge: the one with the light for (almost) all
Hello, friends! In today's episode, we talk about Gareth's level of attractiveness, Mario Lopez's next venture, and Brazil's energy grid. Yes, because Amapá is still having issues and power outtages and the thing is, this is not a new problem. It's just gotten worse recently with the substation going offline.
So, get ready for some data-filled rants! And find that data on our show notes.
At 45:50 we have content warning, as there was another case of extreme police violence against black people. If you are in a position that you are unable to hear about sensititve topics like that, feel free to jump to the 48:37. We would like to mark the occasion of 1000 days without Marielle Franco, city councillor in Rio de Janeiro, whose murder is still unsolved. She was black woman.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

Breaking Nuts: the one with more elections
Hi, friends! We hope you're all doing well. This week's episode is a quickie, giving you the rundown on the latest in the Brazilian election season. Also. apparently the Welsh government thinks coronavirus is a gremlin.
Don't forget to send us questions for our mailbag episode! Use our Twitter, @brazilnutspod, or our email, brazilnutspod@gmail.com.
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.
#blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

The one with a CW because it talks about structural racism and violence
Hi, friends! Some housekeeping: we've been more consistently posting the pod on Saturdays and it actually seems like people prefer that anyway. So, that's now our new day of release - SATURDAY. Also, we wanna do a mailbag episode, so if you have questions about Brazil, Wales, politics, wrestling or something you want our answer to, DM us @brazilnutspod or brazilnutspod@gmail.com.
Regardless, we're still late this week because, well, life is messy and and we gotta make do. Forgive us?
This episode is a rough one, but we do keep it light at the beginning, as usual and give a content warning before the real content starts. In this episode, we talk The West Wing, other questionable TV choices on our part, and the genocide of black youths in Brazil. On November 19th, João Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, was killed at the hands on two security guards, in broad daylight, with 15 witnesses. He was a black man.
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and wish him a happy birthday. We also wanna thank all essential workers, more likely to be in positions that are underpaid, such as waiters, delivery services, drivers, janitors, housekeepers and, in Brazil, more likely to be black and exposed to Covid-19. #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

The one with the marsupial elections?
This week we talk about the Brazilian municipal elections, held last sunday, 15 November. Maybe you're not caught up on the news; maybe you just wanna listen to our pithy commentary; maybe you wanna know what the hell marsupials have to do with any of it. We're here for you!
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinksi for our graphic design, and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.
This week is Black Awareness in Brazil and João Alberto Silveira Freitas was murdered for being Black while grocery shopping. This violence cannot stand. #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

The one where a currency is created, but all money is stupid
Hi, friends! Sorry we're late! You know we do this out of love, right?
On this episode we talk about Ouija boards, the creation of the Brazilian Real, and how all money is stupid. We also recorded this before the U.S. results came out, so bare with us.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

The one where we talk U.S. politics

The one with the Good Manners for Halloween
Hi, friends! We've come to take over your weekend with talks of Star Trek, Latvian werewolves, the 2017 film Good Manners, and some facts and discussion about the Brazilian film industry. Yeah, we got a bit carried away.
Have a spooky weekend, with lots of treats (whatever those may be for you), and thank you for listening! If you're in the U.S.: VOTE!
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all the essential workers keeping us safe.

The one where we've changed the movie for our Hallowen episode
Hi, friends! We've made a blunder and chose a movie that's not great for our purposes here on Brazil Nuts. Blame our excitement for doing something different. Blame Gareth for wanting to do a movie episode for Halloween. On a Brazilian themed podcast. Yes, blame Gareth, that's better.
We're very sorry if anyone was triggered in anyway by our first choice and we hope to have reached everyone in time. We're also very sorry for the confusion!
We will be discussing the film GOOD MANNERS (2017, Brazil) for our Halloween episode.
Thank you and have a spooky week!

Breaking Nuts: finding money where the sun don't shine
Hi, friends! Another week that feels like a year, but here we are, still with you.
This week we bring you some fresh, warm nuts, which is saying something, since we're talking about senator Chico Rodrigues (DEM-RR) and the unusual place he chose to hide his allegedly illegal money.
Since the recording of this episode, Rodrigues's lawyers have sent out a release saying the money was to pay the staff in his family's company. To which we say, we need stricter labour laws. Also, Rodrigues has taken a leave of absence, meaning his son has INDEED taken his Senate seat. Coolio.
Next week we'll be doing a special HALLOWEEN MOVIE NUTS episode, with the film GOOD MANNERS (2017), by Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra. We will NOT discuss the film AT MIDNIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL (1964), by Zé do Caixão as mentioned in the episode. Apologies for our mistake and the confusion.
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

The one where a goat, a rhino, a monkey, and a mosquito walk into a... city council
Hi, friends! Another week, another serving of Brazil Nuts!
With extra nuts this week as we talk about Gareth's feelings, Sebastian Gorka's magical pills, and the animals that have run for office in Brazil!
Be well and take care, dear listeners.
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe. #vote

The one with the origin story of all the things you know about Brazil
Hi, everyone! Yes, we are late again! We're very sorry!
This week, we talk about the Getúlio Vargas period and how this controversial dictator is responsible for a lot of the cultural stereotypes that most foreigners know about Brazil. We also talk about Pokémon, Aleisteir Crowley, and curse words in Brazilian Portuguese. We promise you, it was worth the wait!
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all essential workers, for keeping us safe. And you, our lovely listeners.

Movie Nuts: the one with Central Station and the podcast on The Rocks
Hi, friends! We are SO sorry about how late we are this week. The life of indie podcasting is a thrill!
This week we talk about The Rock's endorsment, Men at Work's significant contribution to music, and the 1998 Brazilian film Central Station. We were also supposed to talk about Zulu (1964), but let's just pretend the equipment didn't record that.
We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and essential workers for keeping us safe.

The State of Your Nuts: Amapá

Breaking Nuts: the one with money for black candidates
Today we break the news about a new campaign financing rule, that should improve chances for the election of black people in Brazil. Also, this was supposed to be a short episode, but apparently we a physically unable to do that, so enjoy us talking about Kim Kardashian, Avril Lavigne, and flat earthers.
Btw, Larissa made a booboo, and campaigning in Brazil actually begins on 26th - the 15th is when party conventions end. She says sorry.
Last, but definitely not least, we'd like to dedicate this episode to Grannie Edith Muriel Hutt (1917-2020), who will live forever in our hearts and in the kindness of her daughter and granddaughter.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and essential workers, for keeping us safe. #stayhome #blm

The one with tragedies, farses, and vaccines
Hi, friends! Another week, another tale to tell. Today we jump into our way back machine to 1904 and remember the Vaccine Revolt and how bizarre it is that history really does repeat itself!
Also, Gareth has linguistic deafness and refuses to admit it.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design. We'd also like to thank all essential workers, who keep us safe. #stayhome #blm

The one with all the (book) pirates RRRRRR!!!!
Hi, friends! Today we talk about the price of books in Brazil as the Bolsanaro government prepares to remove the tax-free status of this already pricey item. But why are books so pricey if they aren’t taxed? How does piracy work in Brazil? Well, this episode is free, so listen to find out!
Also, would you wanna go on the first manned mission to Mars??? #terraformersneedbeans
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design. We also wanna thank essential workers for keeping us safe and, protesters everywhere, for fighting for a better world. #stayhome #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

The one with... hum... stuff?
Hi, everyone! So, this week we kinda went crazy on the topics and talked about a bit of everything! Cities with the same name in Brazil cause confusion in Larissa’s household! Is Bolsonaro an idiot or a grifter? Was the Romero Britto thing funny or SUPER funny?
So stay tuned for our recap of last week and learning WAY TOO MUCH about Gareth’s personal life!
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and the essential workers, for keeping us safe. And you, our lovely listeners. We love you. #stayhome #blm

Welsh Nuts: the one with Schrödinger's country
Hi, friends! Happy friday!
Today we got a Welsh Nuts for you, as Gareth takes the reigns and tells us all about A-levels and when Wales became a country. Kinda. Also, Larissa rants about universties overall and Geléia interjects. A LOT. Seriously, we've given up. She's just a part of the show now.
We'd (all three of us) like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design and all essential workers for keeping us safe. (Geléia is particularly fond of the people who deliver her kibble.) #stayhome #blm

The State of Your Nuts: Acre
Hi, friends! Ready for some Brazil Nuts?
This week we come to you with a special series: The State of Your Nuts will describe each Brazilian state, some statistics (OF COURSE), some politics, some history, some geography, all to bring you a little closer to this continental country.
So, LET'S DO THIS THING!
P.S.: Larissa endorses responsible drinking.
As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, the essential workers keeping us safe, and our wonderful listeners. #stayhome #wearamask #blm

Nut of Knowledge: The one with the big fat stereotypes
Hi, everyone! Hope you all had a smashing week! To get your weekend going, for this episode we use some silly maps to talk about Brazil, Larissa fixes a mistake at the expense of Gareth, and Gareth spreads the love about Doolittle (kind of).
To see all the maps, go to our Twitter account, HERE!
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski, for our graphic design, and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe. #stayhome #blm
P.S. First Nut of Knowledge was 10 minutes long. Just pointing it out.

The one with green, yellow, dark blue, and stars
Hi, friends! This week we talk Brazilian history and Larissa gets flag crazy! But just to make sure she’s actually “all there”, Gareth administered a Very Difficult Cognitive Test (patent pending) on her. And we have the cutest cameo ever!
Follow us on Twitter, share our episodes, like them, tell your friends, your enemies, shout to strangers! We are always so grateful for your support.
As always we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski, for the graphic design, and all the essential workers, keeping us safe.

Breaking Nuts: the one with the Russian Report
Hi, everyone! So sorry we’re late, but we bring treats! Well, no, we don’t, unless you like two people ranting about Brazilian and British politics, Russian interference, troll farms, Brexit, and how everything would’ve been just fine if it weren’t for those meddling elites!
Please, like, subscribe, share, follow us on Twitter, all that good stuff!
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design. We also wanna thank all essential workers, keeping us safe. #stayhome #blm

The one where Larissa talks football! No, really
Hello, sports fans! This week we decided to stick with the military dictatorship and talk about Brazil’s victorious 1970 World Cup campaign and why it was actually a huge political win for dictator-in-chief, Emílio Garrastazu Médici. So listen up for some pretty creepy, nationalistic music and slogans, ramifications during the 70s (and ones that last until today), Pelé’s role in all of it, and how Marta is the world’s most awesome football player (don’t @ us about this).
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe. Stay home and BLM!

Breaking Nuts: The one with the dogs, the minister, and the ninja
Hi, friends! Here we are, late. Again. But honestly, this one was a doozy. We had so much fun making it we’re not even sure there’s any substance to it and it was almost impossible to edit! But we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it!
BTW, this a new type of Brazil Nuts: when we talk about some breaking news.
Also, there are two special guests: Geléia and a sneaky ninja!
As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design. A special thanks to essential workers and protesters, in particular, app delivery drivers everywhere. We support you in all your efforts for better working conditions. #brequedosapps

Welsh Nuts: The one with the devil from Swansea
Hi, friends! Pod day is here, so let us rejoice!
Larissa was swamped this week, so instead of our regular Nut of Knowledge, Gareth took the reigns and gave us some of that Welsh history we all so desperately need. It’s a tale filled with trials and tribulations, revenge and missed connections, and at last, a happy ending. The fact that this revolves around a statue of the Angel of Darkness is neither here nor there.
Larissa and Gareth would like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design. They would also like to thank essential workers and protesters out there, making this world slightly less awful.
Music is "Corta-Jaca", by Chiquinha Gonzaga, performed by people unknown people.
