Benign smartphone use: My message to BBC Radio 5 Live, thanks to my phone!

It's a theme I've explored many times, the positive and negative aspects of smartphones (see, for example, https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2022/11/the-digital-dystopia.html and https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2017/10/taking-time-to-think.html).
Here on the Naga Munchetty programme on BBC Radio 5 Live — a station I listen to on my phone! — I accentuate the positives. I'm not always negative, you know!

Colombia's Tourism Minister on covid supports, foreign visitors & Medellín's prostitution 'cancer'

Colombia's Tourism Minister on covid supports, foreign visitors & Medellín's prostitution 'cancer'

Colombia's Vice Minister for Tourism, Julián Guerrero Orozco, discusses the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on tourism in the country and the various government measures introduced to help the sector.

Highlighting the supports already in place, the Vice Minister states that 'there has to be a limit at some point because it cannot go on endlessly ... I would dare say that probably no other economic sector in Colombia has received more benefits than the tourism sector.'

In relation to international visitors, he says that while numbers will most likely remain low for the coming months, foreign tourists are still a high priority, with digital nomads being a potentially important group to attract to Colombia.

Outside of the pandemic, Mr Guerrero acknowledges the 'huge problem' of prostitution and sex tourism, particularly underage sex workers in the centre of the country's second city, Medellín. Describing it as 'a cancer', he says that his department and other state and regional authorities 'are trying our best to combat this crime.' (For some background to Medellín's prostitution problem, read https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2019/10/medellins-plaza-putaero.html).

Daniel Coronell on dating Duque's sister, unmasking Uribe, Petro's problems & Vicky Dávila's Semana

Daniel Coronell on dating Duque's sister, unmasking Uribe, Petro's problems & Vicky Dávila's Semana

Renowned Colombian journalist Daniel Coronell joins us for a discussion ranging from the Hispanic influence in US politics and an "exclusive"  revelation of his love affair with President Iván Duque's sister to the need for a strong centrist candidate to emerge ahead of next year's presidential election in Colombia and his controversial leaving of  Semana magazine.

Before delving into Colombian politics,  Coronell gives us his reaction to Joe Biden's winning of the White House and why it's wrong to view Latino voters in the US as a homogeneous block.

As for matters in his homeland, the Miami-based Bogotano is less than impressed with President Iván Duque's performance and reveals, somewhat embarrassingly considering his political outlook, that he once dated Duque's sister.

Looking ahead to Colombia's 2022  presidential election, Coronell explains why he hopes it doesn't become a  left-right shoot-out as it did in 2018. If it does, he fears that what he calls former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez's 'puppet candidate' will win again.

With that in mind, he stresses the importance of an appealing centrist candidate — not Sergio Farjado, by the way — to emerge in the coming months.

Finally, he talks about his departure from Semana in April 2020 after 15 years as a columnist with the publication and he finishes up with some sound advice for budding  journalists.

Going coca loca down in Colombia with Ocean Malandra

Going coca loca down in Colombia with Ocean Malandra

Considering the bloody damage the cocaine trade inflicts on Colombia, many locals are loath to talk positively about the plant from which the drug is derived, coca.

However, that might be slowly changing as people learn more about the reputed health benefits of the leaf.

Journalist and writer Ocean Malandra is very much in the coca-as-super-food camp and he joins us to explain why he believes it doesn't deserve its negative image.

We also hear how there's a simple explanation behind Ocean's rather uncommon first name!

The Viva Effect in Colombia and Latin America, with Rupert Stebbings

The Viva Effect in Colombia and Latin America, with Rupert Stebbings

The arrival of low-cost carrier Viva Colombia, now Viva Air, to South America has played a major role in changing the aviation sector in the region.

In this episode, we speak to Rupert Stebbings, author of The Viva Effect, a new book detailing how the airline's original founders overcame many obstacles to finally get their project, um, off the ground (sorry!).

Once in the air, we learn how it was far from an easy ride to keep Viva flying high but — the pandemic notwithstanding — the company now seems to be cruising, with the doyen of low-cost carriers, Ireland's Declan Ryan (see
https://anchor.fm/brendan-corrigan/episodes/Declan-Ryan-Viva-Air-is-in-a-good-position--unlike-Avianca-ednc73), playing a major role in that.

*Thanks to Viva Air, we have a free flight to give away. As you'll hear, the competition is open for 48 hours from the uploading of this episode and is available to Colombian-based listeners only. In a Facebook post, simply write your answer to the question Brendan asks in the podcast, tag  @wrongwaycorriganblog and include a link to this podcast episode/YouTube video. A winner from all the correct answers will be picked at random when the competition closes. Good luck!

On a recent holiday to Cartagena, Cali-based Irishman Kevin McCaffrey fell victim to a scopolamine attack (for some background on that drug, see https://wwcorrigan.blogspot.com/2016/12/a-criminals-perfect-drug.html)

The incident left him almost 60 million pesos (around 13,900 euros) less well off as his bank account was practically wiped clean.
Here he tells us about his ordeal, including how both his bank and the police have been anything but helpful.

Despite that, he's putting a positive spin on it. Borrowing from Trainspotting, he's choosing life! (This will make sense when you listen to the podcast!)

Colombian visa applications in coronavirus times, what you need to know, with Camilo Trujillo

Colombian visa applications in coronavirus times, what you need to know, with Camilo Trujillo

While most Colombian media have focused on the high-profile case of influencer Dominic Wolf failing to get residency (see https://youtu.be/AxIikBVyZKA), many foreigners are in similar situations, minus the public outcry.  Here visa consultant Camilo Trujillo explains the options available to those who find themselves between visas, have had residency deemed inadmissible or are looking to extend their temporary tourism pass.  And while it might all seem chaotic right now, for those from the outside looking in thinking about visiting Colombia, the country is open to tourism, as long as you follow certain biosecurity protocols.

Cali-based coffee with a conscience

Cali-based coffee with a conscience

Café Plus owner Simon Ford joins us to tell us what makes his brand different to the rest.
One of those differences is the company's commitment to give 50 per cent of its profits to community projects for vulnerable people in Colombia and elsewhere.
Another hat Simon wears is that of UK Honorary Consul for Cali. Through that role, he has met with some of those most affected by Colombia's conflict. Here he shares with us their concerns, issues which the work of Café Plus aims to address.

Opportunity in a crisis: A Bogotá "shoe-in" success story

Opportunity in a crisis: A Bogotá "shoe-in" success story

As it is for many businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector, the coronavirus pandemic has put an end — if only temporarily — to Laura Márquez Botero's travel company.
However, rather than sit tight and wait for the restrictions to pass, Laura used her first-hand experience of Japanese culture to exploit a gap in the Bogotá market.
Here she talks about her new start-up aimed at brightening up the homes of the capital's residents.
A true entrepreneur, she also tells us about her other ventures and her passion for travel — she has visited over 70 countries — that led her to set up Travel Round.

An expat guide to having a baby in Colombia

An expat guide to having a baby in Colombia

It's fair to assume that for women from developed countries, Colombia wouldn't be top of the list as regards places they'd choose when having their first child.
However, for California native Melissa Fábregas, Bogotá is where her newborn Millie entered the world.
Here she shares her experiences of pregnancy and giving birth in a foreign country, one in which she has no family ties, imparting some helpful advice to those facing a similar situation.
Not quite a spoiler alert, but be sure to pick a doctor you can trust and hope he/she is around when you're actually giving birth!

Your Colombian visa questions answered

Your Colombian visa questions answered

In normal times, applying for or renewing a Colombian visa can be a bit of a headache.
In these coronavirus pandemic days, it's potentially even more tedious as the relevant offices are closed, meaning no in-person applications can take place — it's online only.
Joining us to clear up a few common queries is independent visa consultant, Camilo Trujillo. He also gives us a general overview of the types of visa available and the documents required.
If you have any further questions that this podcast didn't answer, feel free to contact Camilo at ctrujillo@pygbox.com.

Get up & go Colombia: Building peace through tourism

Get Up and Go Colombia is an NGO that promotes tourism in some of the regions that have been most affected by the country's armed conflict.
Its co-founder Luisa Romero joins us to chat about the organisation's various projects, how it has adapted to the challenges posed by coronavirus and her concerns that the ongoing crisis may undo some of the progress made in remote areas in recent years.
She also tells us about her experience meeting the Dalai Lama last year and how she had to practically re-learn her English while doing a master's degree in Northern Ireland! How about ya?!

Prof. Niall Ferguson: 'Colombia didn't have the capacity to do East Asia's smart coronavirus policies'

Renowned historian and author Professor Niall Ferguson joins us to talk about the 'dithering' approach of some countries in tackling coronavirus, Colombia's limitations in implementing an effective response and why there's no real reason the country couldn't make much better use of contact tracing and testing in the future.
In a wide-ranging interview, he highlights the importance of Colombia ensuring that its range of political options is kept narrow as it deals with the severe economic fallout from the pandemic crisis in the months and years ahead.
He also gives his thoughts on the prospect of military intervention in Venezuela, the problems with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and 'cancel culture', counterfactual history in relation to the colonisation of Latin America by the Spanish and why the Irish are to blame for the mispronunciation of his first name. 49 minutes of your time well spent!

'The Colombian government has abandoned small businesses'

As Colombia tentatively eases coronavirus-imposed restrictions, Medellín-based hostel owner Spyros Mitrakos hits out at what he sees as the government's failure to help small businesses such as his to survive.
He also questions the wisdom behind prolonged lockdown measures that he believes are putting the lives of millions in jeopardy in order to save a relatively small number of people.
