Mama Knows Nada Miscarriages, Mutations and a Non-Toxic Rainbow
The loss of life is nothing short of devasting. It can't be fathomed nor surmised with words. Plainly put, there is a pain that is inexplicable. Pregnancy and infant loss is a focus of October Awareness and one I can't leave out.
Rachelle was living the California Dream. Married in her earlyish 20s, she and her husband decided to wait to start their family. Yet, when they were ready, they faced the tough hurdle that maybe it wasn't meant to be. After two miscarriages (plus the loss of her father), Rachelle took some time to soul search. Once ready to attempt to grow her family again, she discovered a rare gene mutation (as well as sperm issues) were the probable cause of her pregnancy losses. But there was a silver lining, had had GOTTEN pregnant, and likely could again. What was also interesting, is the timing of these conceptions: when her--and her husband's--diet was clean, conception occurred. Delving deeper into research and doctor appointments, Rachelle discovered her MTHFR gene mutation had a low tolerance for any toxic influx. Now, Rachelle strives to live a toxin-free life and she courageously shares her journey to help other individuals get through in the devastation of loss, knowing there can be a rainbow on the other side or pain. This mind blowing story may be late, but definitively worth the wait and tech issues! Please pardon any hiccups or delays.
TRIGGER WARNING: This conversation discusses miscarriages and touches on suicide.

Mama Knows Nada The Ayurvedic Approach with Alyssa from Wellness with Fill Your Cup Birth + Wellness
Ayurvedic medicine has been practiced for thousands of years and principles of it are beginning to become more prominent in daily life. Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words "ayur," meaning life, and "veda," meaning science or knowledge. In essence, Ayurveda is the "knowledge of life."
I chatted with Ayurvedic practitioner and doula, Alyssa Megeath of Fill Your Cup Birth and Wellness, to get a better understanding in to the history of Ayurveda, as well as what the practice entails. Her own background in bio-chemistry prompted her path to these wellness customs.
We discuss how nutrition is a huge factor in preparing for and recovering from birth and how this fundamental process seems to be forgotten. While Alyssa focuses on maternal care, she shares how the Ayurvedic approach has healing principles that are accessible to everyone, applicable and beneficial in daily health outside of pregnancy and postpartum.

Mama Knows Nada Selfcare with Courtney
Stress release. Anxiety release. Depression release. Emotional release. We all need a way to work through our shit. That outlet is intimately unique to each individual. For Courtney, a huge proponent of her mental health is painting and being unapologetic for it. But that hasn't always been the case. As a SAHM, her focus for the passed 10 years has been her family and being accessible to her kids. Yet, she found resentment in her daily life. And although she was physically present for her family, she was often distracted, longing for something else.
In this podcast, we discuss how self-care isn't selfish. Courtney shares how her journey through mothering has shifted and why she has chosen to create a space for herself. She talks about how this change has allowed her to be more at ease as well as invested in her children, and how she incorporates her kids in the things that bring her peace, solace and oneness.

Mama Knows Nada Empowering Parents with Gina
Raise your hand if you agree: Parenting is hard. Raise your hand if you think parenting kids with special needs adds another level of detail and intricacies to life.
Gina shares her journey with her four kids, three with Tourette's syndrome and how many humans have judge her and her "bad parenting" practices. Perhaps, she counters, we ought to start asking, "What am I missing?" instead of assuming it's the parents fault. We also discuss how #differentlyabled individuals have loads of talents and are making contributions that need to be highlighted and recognized.
To support others and help them along their journey, Gina wrote a book called Exceptionally Unordinary, chronicling her experiences thus far. A teacher before having and homeschooling her children, she discusses issues in our education system (spoiler: like restraining students with disabilities -- which actually exacerbates the situation). This conversation is incredible. I learned so much about Tourette's and what parents like me can do.

Mama Knows Nada Diaper Duty with Brandon
What happens when hospitality professionals become parents? They switch jobs, but keep the directive tone.
Brandon and I chat about life after restaurants, and how managing people impacts the transition into parenthood and relationships, for better or worse.
For Brandon, his profession prompted him to meet his now wife on the first day of a new job (surprise: engaged after about 45 days) leading them to become parents. He also delves in to his experience as a child of adoption, what he was nervous about when he found out he was going to be a dad and why we wants to be present for his son. Talk about emotions of high alert.

Childbirth is serious and profound business, but Jessica Gillan, #yournocateedoula, always finds a way to relax and help moms unwind. And nothing helps stress and anxiety of labor like a little laughter.
Support before and after delivery is essential, regardless of how your baby came into the world. The youngest cousin in our bunch, Lauren Brooke, has always been an energetic spitfire, who’s nonstop motion. Not much has changed, except she has two tiny humans in tow. She shares how the planner in her was fortunate enough to plan both births (yes, she knows she’s lucky), how she embraces day care for the space it gives her to work and find time for herself, including her side hobby/blog/social presence, Life with Laur Brooke. Here, she discusses good deals she stumbles upon as well as products she can’t live without...and a few that she can.
Laur also delves into the struggles of her husband's work in law enforcement; the unease it can bring, especially when protests occur. And while she knows not every first responder has the best intentions, she urges people to wait for the facts before passing judgment.

Mama Knows Nada: Story Time featuring Arielle Hobbs
An author, a mother, a student, and a therapist, the many roles of one woman and remarkable mama. From one magical child to the one that keeps her grounded, Arielle Hobbs has been profoundly inspired by her children. So much so, she has ventured down new paths. From writing children’s books to returning to grad school, her children have been the most magnificent force in her life.
Arielle’s lively spirit, honesty and humor take the spotlight in this tale. Our conversation centers on her own story of mothering dynamic children. She discusses the craziness that comes with three children in three different stages, how raising a differently abled individual makes her think and plan in ways she never knew possible and her experience with the school system, good and bad. Our favorite takeaway? Wherever motherhood impacted her personally, disability changed her even more.

Mama Knows Nada: Home Birth Heroes
Jacksonville Community Midwives is a midwife team serving Clay, Duval and the surrounding counties in the Northeast Florida region. Jennifer Stone (LM, CPM, LPN, CLC) and Jacinda Golden (LM, CPM) have both served women and the birth process in numerous ways throughout their careers, uniting in 2019 to create their practice.
Ultimately, this duo is determined to give women space to be “the boss of their birth.” Jacinda captures this mission with her abounding energy and focus on every mother having the birth they envision. From listening to women as they labor to catching babies when moms are on the move, there is no situation unfamiliar or too awkward for this midwife team. Jacinda shares invaluable insight in this episode, the compassion is apparent and it’s no wonder they are a thriving practice. We dig into who is having home births now, the cost of midwives, ideas for a registry--like a doula, which Jacinda calls “essential” for a birth team--and much more.
Her most essential advice? Be informed, know your options and realize you do not need to justify what's right for you, your body, your baby and your family with anyone.

Mama Knows Nada: Get Crackin'
Who knew chiropractors were so helpful? Not me...until a doctor recommended I see one during pregnancy. Full of skepticism, I went and after my first session, I was hooked.
But, I had loads of questions, from are they really helpful? To is this actually safe for baby? Low and behold, It became an essential part of my prenatal and post-pregnancy routine.
In this episode, I discuss the misconceptions and benefits of chiropractic care with Dr. Mayredlis Cruz of Lighthouse Chiropractic. She shares valuable insights as we dive into my journey and how the practice has not only helped me, but also my son.

Mama Knows Nada: It's Time to Smash
This was such a powerful conversation. Our Italian-Irish Catholic family is nothing short of dynamic. Chaos has always been the norm and laughter was the keystone of every gathering. Although it made for some incredible holidays and memories, there was something more sinister prompting these seemingly silly antics.
So, Courtney and I delve into some family skeletons. We discuss how we have chosen to hold ourselves accountable and smash the cycle of abuse and control. We share our awareness of our own shortcoming and openness to vulnerabilities, how we don't always have the answers for our kids and how she's letting go of her fears to pursue her passion while she raises her kids.

Mama Knows Nada: Wander Love
We all know the phrase “not all who wander are lost.'' Many merely thrive by exploring new places, meeting new people and delving into personal challenges. Oftentimes, it’s those adventurers who unexpectedly stumble upon life’s most thrilling excursions.
No one can speak to this more than Laura, a travel-hungry lass, looking for fun and tranquility wherever the road led her. What started as teacher training in India took a surprise turn, leading her down the road to motherhood in New Zealand. How did she get there? Found out how seeking adventure led her to thrills, experiences, and ways of life she had never envisioned.

Mama Knows Nada: Discovering Doulas
What exactly is a doula and what do they do? The idea was a foreign concept to me when I entered into the world of pregnancy and I had a lot of questions to quell. (Spoiler alert: I used one.)
But all the insight is dished out by the charming Jessica Gillan, baby extraordinaire and owner of Bellies, Boobs, Babies and Bliss. She delves into the basics of what a birth doula is + what they do (Spoiler 2: there are different types of doulas). Jessica breaks down how doulas can be an essential and pivotal support person during the birth process. Tune in until the end when Jessica gives us some excellent ideas for sites and documentaries to check out...all about birth of course.

Mama Knows Nada: Single Mom Swing Part 1
Laughter is the best medicine and I don’t think I could laugh more in this one. Meet Jeremy. She’s a mom who tackles all the highs and lows of parenting with a giggle, and embraces a break from her much-loved kiddo (because who doesn’t need a break at times?). For Jeremy, finding that space can be difficult because she co-parents. Yet, she welcomes her single mom experiences and even finds some perks. How’d she master her mom's transition? Well, she just so happens to be a recovering hospitality manager, where all those employees were exceptional preparation for motherhood.
**There's also a few interruptions from my tiny human. Thank you for your patience with his whiny ways. That's motherhood.**
