Episode 58: The English Government’s Football governance review with: Ed Aarons, Deputy Sports Editor The Guardian Newspaper

Episode 58: The English Government’s Football governance review with: Ed Aarons, Deputy Sports Editor The Guardian Newspaper

Thank you for your interest in the BvB London fan community podcast as every week the focus of the show will be on exploring a facet of football life with a focus on Borussia Dortmund by talking to experts, fans, and players and coaches.

People, including journalists, who make up the football world including decision makers and who know the football world and the world of BVB well.

The aim of the podcast is to make Bundesliga, BVB and international football more accessible.

On today's podcast our guest is Ed Aarons who is deputy Sports Editor at The Guardian newspaper and a Crystal Palace season ticket holder.

The long-awaited white paper on reform of the English game, a working document which was based on a consultation which took almost two years of fan groups, including the Dortmund Fan Club London, and a wide section of participants in the football industry including managing directors, club owners, journalists, former players, fans and supporters groups.

Among the key points the policy paper seeks to address, which we discuss on the podcast, are the following:

1. Financial sustainability: The introduction of a regulator will ensure closer monitoring and higher standards of reporting. Clubs will be required to ensure they have reserves and plans to ensure they can maintain the business in the instance of financial shocks.

2.Suitability of owners: Directors and club owners will be more closely vetted for propriety and there will be commensurate licensing conditions to ensure higher standards. This will also affect the over-gearing of buy-outs and unsustainable debt levels.

3. Fan engagement: Clubs will be required to consult with fans and there will be minimum standards of engagement including fans having a say, a veto over changes to historically important aspects of the club such as colours, badge and kit colours and geographic location.

4. Breakaway leagues: The white paper aims to protect the football pyramid in the English game and exclude 'closed shop' type leagues like the proposed 'European Super League'.

5. Financial distribution: The white paper aims to ensure a fairer distribution of income across the clubs in the English football pyramid and give power to the regulator to impose workable solutions on the clubs.

6. Compliance/sanctions: The regulator will have the power to take action including withdraw licences from clubs ignoring breaches of conditions of licensing.

The regulator will cover 116 clubs in the top five tiers: The Premier League, The Championship, League 1, League 2 and the National League of the English professional game.

A second part to the podcast series on the governance of German football will appear here shortly.

The football match to raise money for the DEC British Red Cross Earthquake Appeal 2023 which is mentioned takes place on Tuesday 7th March at 3pm at the Linford Christie Stadium, White City.  There will also be a BVB and Chelsea raffle. All spectators are well.

The values include fan participation, environmental sustainability, fair play, tolerance, credibility and gender equality of opportunity.

The topic of the show today is the proposed break-away European football league the European Super League which brings together 15 top European clubs including the two big clubs from Manchester, Milan and  Madrid clubs plus Juventus, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

These clubs will under the proposed model play in an annual fixed pool of clubs plus a meagre 5 clubs who qualify playing a seasonal tournament with no relegation nor promotion.

The 'ESL' is a major challenge to the UEFA Champions League and Europaleague and could be highly damaging to the national leagues across Europe and is highly controversial amongst supporters.

Borussia Dortmund have issued a statement saying that they will not take part as have Bayern Munich and no other Bundesliga clubs have been invited but what will happen next? Will the ESL succeed? Will German clubs be drawn into the 'big business league'?

1.  European Super League what is it about? Who is behind it?

2. What impact will the ESL have on national leagues, cups and Champions League?

3. Could this benefit top clubs in smaller national leagues like Celtic, Ajax or Anderlecht?

4. How will players and the football industry react to the possibility of bans from playing for their national teams?

5. Is the ESL nothing more than an exhibition league with no incentive for fans to follow it? Or an improvement on the Champions League?

6. Could this proposal bring a benefit to historically big clubs in small leagues like Holland, Scotland and Belgium?

7. What is the business sense for clubs taking part? Will the fixed income from the tournament make managing the business of running clubs more effective off-setting financial risk and giving clubs the chance to plan better?

8. What is the current position of Borussia Dortmund fans and the wider community of supporters across football how should they react to this development?

The European supporters federation, which this fan club belongs to, mentioned in the show is the FSE Football Supporters Europe whose position on the Super League can be found at:

https://www.fanseurope.org/en/news/news-3/2414-fse-condemns-european-super-league-plans.html

Super League update following days of fan protests and legal action by UEFA 12 clubs including all the English Premier League teams have withdrawn and only Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid remain of the original 15 clubs. UEFA is promising reform of the Champions League, fans remain highly sceptical to be continued....

We hope you enjoy the show, remember

Episode 25 Say it with flowers - Welcome Marco Rose with Sascha Staat of Ruhrnachrichten newspaper

Episode 25 Say it with flowers - Welcome Marco Rose with Sascha Staat of Ruhrnachrichten newspaper

Thank you for your interest in the BvB London fan community podcast as every week the focus of the show will be on exploring a facet of Borussia Dortmund's life by talking to experts and former participants of the club's life.

People like players, fans and journalists who have covered the club and decision-makers and experts who know the world of all our club well.

The aim of the podcast is to make this wonderful football club more accessible to non-German speakers. The podcast may also be of interest to German football fans who want to learn or practice English.

It's all change at the Westfalenstadion and with the unrest amongst players and fans alike at the recent string of poor results and only 1 win in the last 6 league games and disappointing draws against both Mainz and Hoffenheim teams which BVB would normally expect 6 points from these home fixtures the head has been on interim coach Edin Terzic.

With key injuries most importantly Axel Witsel in midfield and a defence which has conceded 31 goals already by matchday 21 is looking decidedly critical even accounting for the absence of first-choice keeper Roman Bürki and Dan and centre back Axel Zagadou.

Second choice keeper Marvin Hitz has looked poor under pressure and an impressive Thomas Delaney has not been helped by Emre Can having to play in defence and Mo Dahoud being in such poor form.

The club is also going through financial concerns with debts of €70m and players still on reduced wages there have been no winter signings, only U17 international striker Julian Rijkhoff coming in from Ajax Amsterdam to join the academy.

Still playing behind closed doors Borussia is missing the crucial 12th man and looking the worse for it now 16 points behind Bayern and of more concern, 6 points from 4th placed VFL Wolfsburg.

The agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach coach for a three-year contract could not have come at a better time but who is Marco Rose and what is at stake this season and for the Leipzig born incumbent coach?

On today's show, our guests are Sascha Staat a German football journalist who works for Ruhrnachrichten Dortmund's main newspaper as well as Eurosport and DAZN TV channels.

1. Current season BVB lie in sixth place in the table and are far off the mark in terms of a champions league place. The defence is far from stable and players like Marco Reus are not in the form to provide leadership. Why the instability?

2. The Roman Bürki enigma, have the weaknesses returned or are the goals being conceded a result of the instability crucially at right and left-back in defence.

3, The pressure is on Mats Hummels but is the pressure beginning to take away his enthusiasm? What should be the ideal line-up at Centre-back? Where should the constant Raphael Guerreiro be playing and which of the current defenders should be on Rose's for sale list this summer?

4. What are issues in midfield without Axel Witsel? Can Borussia rely on Thomas Delaney? Where should Can be playing? Pundit and former international Lothar Matthäus says a player like Matthias Sammer is missing but which players could fill that gap from the current squad?

5. Marco Reus has had uncharacteristic poor form and failed to lead the team in several matches, but is there too much reliance on 17-year-old Jude Bellingham who has had to hit the ground running. Giovanni Reyna has been a revelation but is now rumoured to be on the selling list, he has looked physically less than assertive but would that be a good move.

6. Enter Youssoufa Moukoko could he replace the incredible Erling Haaland, a striker who has scored more times than games played in since joining 1 year ago. Could BVB manage without Haaland and what else is in reserve?

7. What can be expected from Marco Rose in terms of tactical changes, what has been learnt from his style of coaching at RB Salzburg and Borus

Bonus show Episode 19 with the Blood Red Liverpool FC podcast: Good evening Philip Degen! BVB defender 2005-8/Liverpool 2008-11

Bonus show Episode 19 with the Blood Red Liverpool FC podcast: Good evening Philip Degen! BVB defender 2005-8/Liverpool 2008-11

Thank you for your interest in the BvB London fan community podcast as every week the focus of the show will be on exploring a facet of Borussia Dortmund life by talking to experts and former participants of the club's life. People like players, fans and journalists who have covered the club and decision makers and experts who know the world of all our club well.

The aim of the podcast is to make this wonderful football club more accessible to non-German speakers. The podcast may also be of interest to German football fans who want to learn or pratice English.

On today's show, Matt Addison of the Liverpool FC Blood Red Podcast, and Ben, interview Philip Degen a BVB defender who played in Dortmund between 2005-08. Degen also played for the 'Reds' at Anfield between 2008-11.

Now a football agent, he went on to play for VFB Stuttgart in 2010/11, before finishing his career at home club FC Basel from 2011- 2016. In terms of his International career, Degen gained 32 caps with the Switzerland national team at senior level and played at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and 2008 European Championships which was played across Austria and his home country.

On the show the 37 year old former player talks about his three seasons at Westfalenstadion in which he notched up 68 appearances.  In terms of finishes during, Degen's stay with our 'Schwarz-Gelben' at Westfalenstadion, Borussia finished just outside the European qualifying spots in 7th in 05/06 and 06/07 and 13th in 07/08.

Although hampered by injuries which resulted in gaining only 68 appearances with BVB, a highlight for which the Liesetal born defender, who could also play on the right-wing, will be remembered was an outstanding goal in a memorable 3-3 draw at Bayern Munich in season 2005/6.

With Liverpool Degen narrowly missed out to Manchester United on the Premier League title in season 2008/9. In 2009/10 the 'Reds' reached the semi-final of the Europaleague where they were knocked out by eventual winners Atletico Madrid. In 2010/11 the Anfield based club finished in 6th spot under coach Kenny Daglish.

In 2010/11 Degen moved to VFB Stuttgart reaching the last 16 of the Europaleague and finishing 12th in the league. In 2011 Degen returned to his home country of Switzerland and joined FC  Basel where he achieved his most important successes including four successive Swiss Super League titles and the national cup in 2011/12 before retiring in 2016.

On the podcast Philipp shares his memories of his active career, talking about the characters and personalities he worked with along the way. He gives advice on what it takes to reach the professional level of football as well as insights into being a football agent. Episode 15 Fan Kultur - Premier League v Bundesliga fan culture

Episode 15 Fan Kultur - Premier League v Bundesliga fan culture

Thank you for your interest in the BvB London fan community podcast as every week the focus of the show will be on exploring a facet of Borussia Dortmund life by talking to experts and former participants of the club's life, like players, fans, journalists who have covered the club and functionaries and experts and thus make this wonderful club more accessible to non-German speakers but the podcast is also of interest to German football fans who speak English.

The focus of the show is on fan culture in UK vs Germany.  Borussia Dortmund has some of the most loyal and committed fans recognised around the world and the highest attendance of any football club in the world at over 81,000 average per game but what is it that makes German fan culture so unique?   What is it that draws so many UK fans to the Bundesliga and BVB week in week out? How does UK fan culture compare? Have we lost our fan atmosphere in UK football grounds? Is English football too commercial? What can we learn from the Bundesliga and BVB? This show is a fan culture special.    Football without the fans is nothing as Jock Stein the great Scottish coach said and empty grounds because of Covid-19 are a major threat to world football on tonight's show Phil and David join Ben along with our special guest Phiilipp Buchner sports presenter with RBB Radio Radio Berlin Brandenburg to debate one of our game's most important issues do we still get a football experience we recognise in England?   Here's the show's rundown:

1. Ticket pricing: Always a hot topic is the cost of actually going to watch your club.  In England we are lead to believe that German football is a lot more affordable. With Arsenal charging over £2000 for a season ticket almost 8 times as much as a season ticket at Borussia Dortmund (€230) is English football pricing us out of the game?

2. TV games and fixture times: Pre COVID football across Europe has been moving games for TV with little regard for match going fans.  There have been protests in Germany against Monday night matches but they persist in the second tier 2 Liga, is fixtures scheduling a problem fans in the Uk and Germany share? What can we do about it?

3. Matches during COVID-19:  Its good to see fans back in German football albeit tiny numbers of locally based fans. Whilst in England you can only attend football in the 7th tier in crowds up to 600.  Is this a sacrifice worth taking?  How have the steps Germany has done to get fans back and how its been received?  What about piped crowd sound is it a valued innovation or just another gimmick? Does football even matter when people are losing their lives?

4. Hardcore fans and ultras: In England we see Ultras not as a hooligan but as a group that take their support to the next level organising massive choreographies and displays in grounds, organised fans that have influence with the clubs to an enviable level but is it too much? Who are the Ultras really and what do they do?  Is fan culture dead in the UK?

5. Safe standing: How is it seen in Germany? Is standing just a cheaper option or the option of choice? Does it improve the atmosphere? Should we bring this back in the UK?

6. Atmosphere in the grounds: Atmospheres at Premier league games are often dull for many reasons.   Germany is seen a leading light in match day atmosphere, is the case and if so is working for German football and what are we getting wrong in England?

7. Safety at games for away fans: Away fans in England are often treated as second class citizens by match day stewards and police but it’s a lot safer now to attend games as an away fan in the UK than it was 20 years ago but German fans travel to domestic away games in greater numbers and the rail travel is free how does it work? With half of clubs being able to survive on media income alone do fans still count in the Premier League?

Episode 14 The TV Presenter: Raphael Honigstein - The season preview, let's talk Borussia's Bayern challenge..

Episode 14 The TV Presenter: Raphael Honigstein - The season preview, let's talk Borussia's Bayern challenge..

The focus of the show is a Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund, two titans of the German league and yet not a battle of equals, Bayern have a turnover of €300m more than Die Schwarz-Gelben. But the Meisterschaften of 2019 and 20 have been amongst the exciting and promising in recent years, with more than a hint of potentiality for a major upset to the benefit of the boys from the Westfalenstadion.

Raphael Honigstein is one of the leading football broadcast journalists in the UK who feeds the appetite in UK for the fan's favourite football league, the Bundesliga, well-known to viewers of BT Sport TV as a pundit, a commentator on Talk Sport and a writer for amongst others the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Also an author of a number of books including 'Bring the noise' on BVB's former and current Liverpool gaffer Jürgen Klopp and 'Das Reboot how German football reinvented itself and conquered the world', originating from Bavaria a life-long FC Bayern Munich fan.

Topic 1 - Bayern in short why are they where they are at this time? Bayern have won all the Bundesliga titles since 2013 and now the triple they have an excellent squad including and Hansi Flick has exceeded everyone's expectations. What is the impact on German football?

Topic 2 Dortmund as an area is less industrially successful than Munich and so BVB has to rely on fan power which they manage admirably they have the biggest gate in the world and make €4m per home game and BVB run a very tidy ship with a €0.5bn turnover and €30m profit in 19/20 but have been for many years unable to hold the big names like Hummels and Lewandowski and some label Dortmund a 'selling club' but is there another reason players leave? What is the reason for BVB's pain in the face of the Munich juggernaut?

Topic 3 What about the way the two clubs are run? The management structure? The technical staff, what difference do Matthias Sammer and Sebastian Kehl at Borussia make? Borussia have one of the most talented squads since the 2011/12 double-winning season but is the number 1 spot in the German league title on the cards with the current squad? What are the areas BVB need to make up the numbers in?

Topic 4 There have been a run of managers since Klopp left without finding the 'special one' Was it a mistake to sack Tuchel? Lucien Favre's tactics are getting points and record numbers of goals but is he a winner? His last title was 9 years ago and in the Swiss League. Is he the one to mould the 'New Generation' into a silverware-winning team and we take a look at some of those coaches who Watzke and Zorc may be running the ruler over for the a potential change of guard.

Topic 5 As on every show we find out what our guests own experiences of going to Westfalenstadion are, can a Bayern fan still admire the home of the Black and Yellow? What does Borussia Dortmund mean in Germany as a club? Plus we get Rapha's Predictions for the top places in the 20-21 Bundesliga season ahead.

On the eve of 20-21 Colm and Ben of Fan Club London take the pulse of German football, can the fan's league of choice survive another Bayern title? Plus Colm works on his German pronunciation skills and Ben discovers Rapha and him have more in common than they realised and share a common appreciation for some of the grounds around England.

Episode 10 Borussia Dortmund London Fan Club Podcast 1.FC Kaiserslautern bust, seriously?! With Nik Wildhagen of Talking Fussball

Episode 10 Borussia Dortmund London Fan Club Podcast 1.FC Kaiserslautern bust, seriously?! With Nik Wildhagen of Talking Fussball

Welcome to the BvB London fan club podcast as every week the focus of the show will be on exploring a facet of Borussia Dortmund life by talking to experts and former participants of the club's life, like players, fans, journalists who have covered the club and functionaries and experts and thus make our BvB more accessible to non-German speakers in particular.   In a week where the Meisterschaft is decided and Bayern have taken the honours , again, Borussia Dortmund are confirmed finishing in second in the league for the 09th time as 'Vizemeister' (second-place finishers) it's time for a tactical diversion.   Ben heads to the South-West of Germany. On tonight's show we look at one of BVBs old rivals over the decades who is now facing huge challenges to survive as a professional club like a number of others they have been badly affected by the pandemic but have also suffered years of mismanagement and have now this week gone into voluntary administration; four-time champions 1 F.C Kaiserslautern.    How could that have happened to such a big club? Is this a one-off or is there an underlying weakness below the 2 Liga in German football? Ben's guests are Mark Sheppard and Talking Fussball editor Nik Wildhagen, Nik is a journalist with a passion for historical clubs of Germany and on the show.   Kaiserslautern is a club steeped in history and should be on any groundhoppers bucket-list.  We explore how a club who won the Championship as recently as 1998 with a stadium with an average following of 18,000 spectators even in the third tier could be facing insolvency. What are the factors that have contributed to the relegation of '1FCK' and the factors into the crisis and we explore the club's history in the Bundesliga and in European competition.     As every week, we contrast this with English clubs, this time we look at Leeds United in the 1990s who faced a similar plight which it has taken them twenty years to recover from as they knock on promotion to the Premier League in the last weeks of the 19-20 season.    We look at the wider challenges of the 2 and 3 Liga and Regionaliga clubs, the second, third and fourth-tiers of German football. Who are the former Champions and DFB Pokal winners playing in the leagues and what are the challenges they face, will more clubs follow?    Apologies to 1.FC Kaiserslautern's goalkeeping coach and 'Lautern' fan his name is of course Gerald Ehrmann not Ehrenfeld!     We hope you enjoy the show, remember to send us your comments, share the show with friends and to apply for tickets contact the club via the website which is borussiadortmundlondon.co.uk or join the London BvB community at our online group at Facebook.com/borussiadortmundfanclubengland.
