Press On | Quotes | The Minute
Today's Minute is a quote that hit me this morning. It is from President Calvin Coolidge.
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence
Talent Will Not.
There is nothing more common than unsuccessful People with talent
Genius Will Not
Unrewarded Genius is almost a proverb
Education Will Not.
The world is full of education derelicts.
Persistence and Determination are Omnipotent

Appreciate People | The Minute
For out last looking back episode lets talk about how its important to appreciate people.

Do It Differently | The Minute
So this is one of my favorite videos. And the only reason why is because it was ridiculous. It was supposed to be 107 degrees outside.
I had to rush out and do the recording earlier, which caused me to think about doing things differently.

Keep Planting | The Minute
An Old Monday Motivation to remind all of us to keep planting seeds. You never know when seeds, planted with care will bear fruit, but in order to get a harvest you must keep planting.

Pushing Through Difficulties | The Minute
Let's talk about difficulties. They are going to happen. Don't let them stop you. Keep moving forward!

The One That Started It All | The Minute
I mentioned we're going to be taking a look at some of the old minute videos. So let's just jump right into it. And what better place to start than at the beginning.
This is the very first video that I would classify as part of the minute series shot all the way back in 2017. On what looks like a potato, let's hear what I had to say.
It is nice to see that I am consistent if nothing else. I do believe in you and I know you can do something amazing today!

Looking back | The Minute
So, for the next few weeks, next few weeks next few videos, we're going to be talking about practice. Now, I've already stressed that enough inch by inch is a cinch, increase your reps.
The more you work, the more you practice, the better you get. But I want to use something or show you guys something over the next few videos to see the progression.
We talked about exploring the beautiful mess. So we're going to do that for the next few videos. I'm going to be grabbing some of my old minutes and sharing them with you so that you can see just where we've come from. So be on the lookout for those over the next few days.
And try not to laugh at them as hard as I did.

Breaking Internal Spirals | The Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
I want to share a little bit more on spirals. If the negative feedback loop that you are in is being caused by someone, I give you permission to cut them off. If you have to be respectful of the relationship, don’t be rude about it but get them away from you.

Breaking External Spirals | The Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
If the reason you are in a spiral is because of your own internal monologue, it is time to get a new narrator. Find someone who can look at things objectively. Someone you can trust. Talk to them. Share truth with that person or persons. Tell them you want to escape the spiral and work on a way to break the cycle.

An Intro to Spirals | The Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
So we’ve talk about setting up a positive feedback loop but I need to spend today’s minute talking about the opposite of that. I call it a spiral. This negative feedback loop is created when we accept a negative evaluation and do nothing to break the loop.
The spiral tells you that you can’t do it.
The spiral tells you that you are no good.
I’m here to tell you today that you need to break out of the spiral. I know you can do it. I believe in you. Let’s Go do something great today.
That’s The Minute

More On Feedback Loops | The Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
Yesterday we talked about Feedback Loops and I told you that the first step in the cycle was to get started and be ready for critique. Did you do it? Let me know in the comments. Step 2 is to find someone to give you useful feedback. Well, you’re in luck, the internet is full of people who want to comment. I want you to stack the deck in your favor. Find people whom you trust that can give you constructive criticism.
It might sting but growth comes in the discomfort.
And That’s The Minute

Feedback Loops | Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
Today I want to talk about one of the most useful loops that we can establish. It is called a feedback loop. This is a cycle of action followed by critique. This leads to improved action and so the loop goes. It requires a couple of things. You must first get started and you also need to be open to critique.
One might be easier for you than the other, but you must have both.
So what are you waiting for, go get started.
And That’s The Minute

An Intro to Loops | The Minute
Welcome Back to the Minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. I’m your host Carlton, lets begin.
Over the next few sessions, I want to talk about loops. Everything that we do has a rhythm to it. We are creatures of habit, and we like patterns. Some can be incredibly useful. Others can be harmful. I want you to think about the patterns that you are in right now.
What is working for you?
What isn’t?
If you want to do great things out there, you have to do the real work in here.
And That’s the Minute.

Touch The Dream | The Minute
Today I've got a practical minute for you. There's a task that I want you to accomplish for me. And for you. I want you to go out there and I want you to touch the dream. Whatever it is that you're trying to do, if it's a house that you want to live in, if it's a neighborhood you want to be in, if it's a car, you want to drive, a piece of tech you want to own, I want you to go out there and I want you to touch the dream.
I want you to feel it in your hands or see it in with your eyes.
I want you to drive through that neighborhood.
Let that crystallize things for you. Let it become a tangible reminder of this is what I'm chasing after this is what I want, because it'll clarify things. It'll help you to make the right decisions. It'll help you prioritize.
I want you to touch the dream.

One Of My Biggest Fears | The Minute
I have a fear. And that fear drives me towards my goals. It's the fear of leaving the music behind, taking it with me when I go, that my goals, my dreams, my purpose, that all those things that I'm supposed to get out of me to share to put out into the world will get buried with me when I'm gone.
There's a legacy that got me to the point where I am today. There are people who pushed me forward who lifted me up who created a foundation that I can stand on, and I don't want to leave that on the table.
I want to make it so that it lives beyond me that others can pick up that same baton and continue forward.
I do not want my music to die with me.

Beauty in the Mess | The Minute
There's a beauty in messy beginnings. I've talked about this many times, and I said that you've got to stink first. But I want you to understand that it's not just about embarrassing yourself or being or looking foolish before others.
I mean, there's a beauty in the messy beginning, because when people see the mess at the start, it encourages them to do something to step out to try something different.
And as you get better and the growth is seen, it reminds people that they can crawl and get better every day. And then eventually when you're flying, you can remember that messy beginning and see the beauty.

Why Are You Here | The Minute
Why are you here? That's the question. Not Why are you watching this video? Because I hope you like it.
But why are you here?
What is your purpose?
What is the thing that drives you?
What is the service that you provide? And I don't mean in the nine to five way like why are you go to your job and what do you do while you're there? I mean, what's the thing that really motivates you?
How What brings you joy during your day when you are able to express that thing to the world?
For me, I love telling stories
For me, I love solving problems.
For me, I love to point people towards fulfillment, ultimate truth, ultimate joy.
So I asked you, why are you here?

Who Are You | The Minute
Today I've got a question for you. And it's a fundamental question, a question meant to get at the heart of what it is you're trying to get accomplished. It's the one thing you've got to know if you want to really achieve those goals and dreams.
Here's the question. Who are you? Not just your name, but your identity? Who are you?
It helps you to prioritize your goals. It helps you to prioritize those dreams. It helps you to clarify what that next right thing is.
So I asked you again, who are you? If you can answer that question, and even if you just have a small idea, you will find yourself propelled ever closer to that vision.

Celebrate | The Minute
Celebrate, you've got to celebrate the wins. So we talk about not negotiating on our vision and on our goals. But that doesn't mean that we don't stop to look around and to touch the grass and smell the flowers.
You've got to celebrate every win. I mean, what's the point? What are we doing this for, if not, to have some level of excitement and enjoyment in the things that we're doing?
So I implore you to take time every day and at every milestone to celebrate the wins.

Use The Anger | The Minute
Use the anger. No, seriously, I want you to use the anger. There are going to be things that are going to happen along your journey that are going to ain't make you angry, they're gonna piss you off. And here's the thing that I want you to do.
Don't let that rage turn into something unproductive. I want you to use the anger. Let it drive you let it push you forward, let it get you moving. Let it energize you. Because when you you're going to need energy along the way.
So let those people who make you angry, push you even faster towards your goals

To The Marrieds | The Minute
Today's minute is for my Marrieds, the folks who've made that commitment to another person. You've got to honor that commitment as well.
So as we talk about not negotiating on our vision and on our goals, you can't do these things in a vacuum. You've got to make sure that you are honoring the relationship that you're in as you go towards a vision.
So that means you've got to get with your spouse, and you've got to get buy in on what you're doing. Because when the two of you are walking together, you will see an even greater reward.

Be Committed | The Minute
Commitment is the key to getting things done. If you can commit to it, you will see it through. But when we say commit, we don't mean commit in a squishy way. We don't mean commit in a... if it works out, I'll keep going kind of way.
I mean commitment when it looks ugly
Commitment, when it's hard
Commitment when it doesn't work the way we expect.
What if nothing changes, and it takes a year before any traction happens?
Will you be committed to seeing it through, you've got to have that level of commitment. Again, No Negotiating On Your Vision.

Vows | The Minute
So over the weekend, I had the honor of performing a wedding. And when you go into a wedding, one of the things that is paramount is the commitment. And so the question I have for you today is are you committed to your vision? Are you committed to the goals that you set and are you going to see them through? Will you honor your word before yourself and do the things that you said you would do? Because when you do that, when you put your whole self in, when you bring everything that you have to the table, you will see things happen, and they will be glorious

Gaps | The Minute
Welcome back to the minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started.
What are the gaps in your life? Have you identified them? There's a space between where you are right now and where you want to be. You've got to identify that gap. If you don't identify your gaps, your gaps will govern you.
And that's The Minute

The Next Right Thing | The Minute
Welcome back to the minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. What's the next right thing you should be doing? Seriously, you've got a goal. You're trying to execute on a vision. What's the next right thing that you need to do? There's steps to this thing. It's not an all or nothing.
So when you're planning your day, when you're planning your activities for the week, when you're planning the things that you're going to do for the month, build it out that way. What's the next right thing I should be doing? There should never be a moment where you go, Oh, no, I don't have anything to do.
Because if you're executing on your goals, there's got to be a next right thing. So when you get off this video, what's the next right thing you should be doing?
That's #theminutepod

Be Consistent
Welcome back to the minute 60 seconds, something interesting, just enough to get you started. Consistency is key. I know we just did a video on increasing your reps, but I'm going to keep hammering this point, it comes up in every video whether you want to believe it or not,
The whole point of the minute video happening, the way that it does is because it gave me an opportunity to exercise my gift, execute on my craft every day. So when you don't see me, that means that I'm executing it in some other place.
But for all of us, we've got to be consistent with what we're doing, you want to get better, be consistent.
And that's the minute

Don't Be Afraid To Be Embarrassed | The Minute
Don't be worried to stink first.

Are You Humble or Are You Hiding
So today I want to ask you a question. Are you being humble? Or are you hiding? This is something that we all do, and I'm especially guilty of it. I think or I say, Oh, well, I'm not going to do this thing, or I'm just going to let it go or I'm not going to take this opportunity. But in actuality, I'm afraid of failure.
I'm afraid to mess up and to look foolish by not accomplishing the thing that I think I'm capable of. So I want to challenge you and myself, to chase after the things that we say you want.
So again, question for you. Are You Humble or Are You Hiding

Increase Your Reps
Want to get better? You've got to practice your craft more and more. Increase your reps

Ask Don’t Assume | The Minute
Today I want you do something for me. I want you to commit to asking for what you want. Be demanding was the theme of the 120 conference. Patterns can be good but sometimes we forget to question them.
How many opportunities have you missed because you assumed you knew the answer?

New Beginnings | The Minute
Did you know you can start again? You are not stuck in the situation you find yourself.
Your life is not over because of a mistake or an erroneous assumption. You can start over again, but you must be different. Stop digging the hole and show yourself as different
To the people who don’t believe you are different, don’t argue, don’t be bothered in the slightest. Instead let your success be your answer.

The Truth Is No Excuse | The Minute
I just got back from a conference and the one statement that sticks out in my mind is
You do not have permission to use the truth as an excuse to fail.
I know, there are things that have happened to us.
I know, there is pain in our pasts.
Those things happened. That is the truth.
But
Yesterday ended last night and we have goals that we want to accomplish. So, acknowledge that truth and choose to act support of your goals.
Be demanding of yourself and do something amazing today.
That’s the Minute.

Do One Thing Well | The Minute
This means picking one thing, no matter how small at first, and doing that one thing with excellence an d precis ion. One of my old coaches used to say, Inch by Inch is a Cinch.
So start attacking those goals One By One.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

Keep Moving | The Minute
It is hard to persevere.
It is difficult to persist.
If you are really putting in the work then keep reaching for the reward.
If not... then get started.
You Can Do It.

I Am A Nerd | Episode 2:9 | The Minute
As we slide into day 4 of Who Am I week I’m going to shift gears a bit. The last 2 days were about important roles that I fill in life. Being a father and husband are 2 of the most rewarding aspects of who I am. Today tho, let’s talk about how I am a big **NERD**.
Computers, comic books, video games, sci-fi, and fantasy. I can still remember the first time I ever used a computer, the boxes of comic books I horded and my _still_ growing collection of video games.
I was able to parlay my nerdiness into my professional life. **I’ve worked across industries, from the federal government to video games, desiging/building technical solutions.**
What about you? Are you a nerd like me? How would you classify yourself?
No matter what, this is The Minute, now go out there and get started.

I Am A Dad | Episode 2:8 | The Minute
Building on yesterday’s who am I about being a husband today let’s talk fatherhood. I am a proud, yet tired father of 4. 3 girls and one boy.
Their ages range from 15 years old down to 7 weeks. Yes, that is quite the range in ages. Yes you can find it humorous.
I love being a Dad like my Father and his father before him. #Dadlife is real. I tell anyone worries about being a Dad not to worry. **Just know that being a Dad is great, and act accordingly.**
Any Fathers in the house? How many and what ages?
This has been The Minute. Now go out there and get started.

I Am Husband | Episode 2:7 | The Minute
So to flesh out The Who am I statement from yesterday, I want to start with my most important role, husband. My wife and I will be starting our 17th year of marriage in April, though we have been together for 21. We met online before it was cool. In fact there was a concern that I was at best some internet weirdo and at worst an ace murderer.
Together we live in the whirlwind of life holding onto each other.
What is your primary relationship? How did it come about?
This has been The Minute, now go get started.

Who Am I Overview | Episode 2:6 | The Minute
Good Morning, my name is Carlton Matthews and this is the Minute. 60 seconds, something interesting… Just enough to get you started.
Now that we are back for Season 2, I figure I should reintroduce myself. Let me start here. I am a married, father of 4, who solves problems using technology and devotes “free” time encouraging people to get started.
Now it’s your turn. Who are you?

Be Easy On Yourself | Episode 2:5 | The Minute
I had a conversation a few weeks back in with the young man and we were discussing his frustrations with where he was and how he thought he be further along in life.
He was concerned that he was missing something. He felt that things had fallen apart. I told him Not to worry, that he is still young and there is time. Even if he was someone my age I would tell him the same thing. Be Easy on Yourself
if you are concerned that you haven’t gotten as far as you would have liked, don’t worry. It might even be true but that doesn't change the fact that you're in your process so don't worry about where you haven't gotten. Worry about how you can get moving now and find your pace.
You’ve got this!
The Minute is a short burst of inspiration delivered every weekday.

Don’t Trade Dollars For Nickels | Episode 2:4 | The Minute
I was listening to an interview and the host said the following quote, “don't sell a dollar for a nickel.” This got me thinking as I didn’t quite get it at first.
I finally landed on this, don't spend something of great value on something of lesser value. We spend a lot of time doing things, we spend a lot of time in situations and circumstances, even jobs.
I'm telling you, what's most valuable is your time and if you're trading your time for something that has little value you're making a mistake. I wanted to share that with you today because you got to use that which has value to get something of even greater value.
The Minute is a short burst of inspiration delivered every weekday.

Make Sure It Matters | Say Yes | The Minute

10-10-10 Method | Say Yes | The Minute
Take 10 minutes away from the decision to clear the impulsive drive.
Consider how you’ll feel about this decision in 10 Months.
Consider how you’ll feel about this decision in 10 Years.
If you’ll regret not taking action in 10 and 10 then you need to move forward.
If not then say no and move on.
The key here is to attack the things where there is passion and drive. If it is not a YES! Then come let it go.

Say Yes | The Minute
Many of us spend a lot of our energy finding ways to say NO. We shut things down. We excuse and explain why something won’t work. While there is value in being selective I want you to say YES to these three things.
Say YES to your Goals
Say YES to your Dreams
Say YES to YOURSELF
While the next weeks and months are going to be a whirlwind for me and my family, I want you to know that I am hear to listen and to help.
