This is one of the most interesting topics I've done. We rarely talk about hair being an identity however, for Hayil, it's a daily routine to fix her hair. [Careers] Ep77 From International Student to Podcast Producer ft. Ghost Island Media Emily Y Wu

Emily grew up in Taipei and became an international student in the US starting at the age of 12, practicing her English, and learning some very-American sports and activities. During her time in the US, she lived in Michigan, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and New York City. She moved back to Asia in 2007 to work in television and journalism.

Co-founder of Ghost Island Media, a multilingual podcast network based in Taiwan, with current affairs programs in Mandarin, English, and French. Our shows range from climate, cannabis, gender, culture, diplomacy, China, documentaries, Taiwan, and politics. We also run an emerging creators program for students and interns. We've been nominated for some cool podcasts and journalism awards, including winning Best Podcast Host in Taiwan in 2021.

I had so much fun talking to Emily about her schooling and some of the cultural identities in her past. Fun to compare notes when we're both "in-between".

**Bilingual Alert: This episode was conducted in a mixture of Mandarin and English. However, I think this would be more beneficial for English listeners or for those who're interested in learning Mandarin or going to Asia to teach English as a Second-Language (ESL).  Kevin is a cool biracial fellow that I met at work and he shares his work as an ESL teacher in different cities in China between 2007-2010, then again from 2013-2015. We actually had chai while chatting. He started teaching kids in Shanghai for 5 years. Later moved to Xiamen and began learning Mandarin there with her girlfriend (now wife). He also talked about his high school experience at Columbine which suffered from the shooting in 1999 (OMG!!!)

[Adoptees] Ep59 I Am Proud to Be a Chinese Adoptee w/ Alexis Hall

Alexi was adopted from China when she was nine months old. She's a special education teacher in an elementary. She also encourages her students with her dyslexia (in reading) and dyscalculia (in math). Her family and four other families went on vacations together throughout the years as a community. | Alexis' IG: @alexis_hallll

#57 Being Asian Adoptees in the U.S. w/ Sarah & Emily Quinn

#58 Challenging My Identities Constantly as A Korean Adoptee w/ Mitchell Stone

📝Some Takeaways

➡️ Having an adoptive community growing up was helpful for Alexis.

➡️ Connecting to the cultural roots is important but it isn't always doable.

➡️ Sometimes when filling out the medical forms, adoptees can't really know their family conditions. It can feel unsettling.

➡️ Adoptees can ask more questions and find some answers. You're special and you're meant to be these families.

[Adoptees] Ep58 Challenging My Identities Constantly as A Korean Adoptee w/ Mitchell Stone

[Adoptees] Ep58 Challenging My Identities Constantly as A Korean Adoptee w/ Mitchell Stone

Mitchell was adopted from South Korea to Colorado, U.S. He and his four siblings were all adopted. He constantly battles with questions about his own history and identities. However, he also comes to a recognition to accept his circumstances. | Contact Mitchell IG @mitchellyongsoo or on FB by Mitchell Stone | Adoption Agency: Eastern Society Welfare Services in South Korea | Heritage Camps  Adoptive Families |

📝Some Takeaways

➡️ Being around people that don't look like you, you have to learn to adapt and understand what they think.

➡️ It's a constant theme, there are not defining moments. Adoptees can feel alone in a lot of ways.

➡️ The life you do have answers more questions. There's a limit to your curiosity and it's better to accept that there are so many things you don't know. And it's ok.

➡️ Families can help the adoptees to answer questions or talk about things that they're curious about.

➡️ One should listen first before they speak especially about the things that they're not experiencing.

📝Some Takeaways

➡️ Open discussion for adoption and stories.

➡️ Supporting adopted children's cultural roots is a great way to help them to find identities. For example, lunar new year celebrations, adoptive camps or communities

➡️ Adoptees are also Third Culture Kids who might feel out of place in many communities because of their unique identities and family backgrounds.

➡️ Racism can be very subtle and lingering at the back of someone's mind. At times, it's not easy to figure it out.

➡️ Finding roots back in the homeland can be a potential plan for adoptees.

➡️ Either adoptive families or allies can be self-educated through online information, volunteer at events, and asking questions when adoptees want to talk about their stories.

[LGBTQ+] Ep54 Puerto Rican, Latino, Gay and Ballet Dancer w/ Norberto

Norberto came to talk about his stories of being a Latino gay man and how he came to Colorado and explored himself. It is touching and also irritating for me to listen to him talking about his experiences. One shouldn't be treated without boundaries or respect because of their identities. Thanks, dear, for being honest and sharing your stories with us! I'm truly inspired. | Norberto's IG @Hoskyfull

➡️ My Love for Linguistics and Interpretation w/ Norberto #7 (You can also search Chai with Ping Norberto and it will show up.)

➡️ Stories of a Medical Interpreter w/ Agi #15

📝Some Takeaways

➡️ Norberto's journey of being a gay man and his interaction with his family. His dad is hilarious!!!

➡️ Labeling Norberto as the clown because he's gay is oppressing. Crossing the line of privacy or subtle jokes is not ok.

➡️ The nightlife can be dangerous in the gay community, drinking, partying or unprotected sex. Having different communities for various interests like dancing or camping can be important even for LGBTQ groups.

➡️ Being queer shouldn't be the only identity for a person.

➡️  The quote Norberto said was from the Bible, Book of Romans 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep."

[LGBTQ+] Ep53 Being a Queer in Higher Education w/ Steve Jenks

Steve is a doctoral candidate at the University of Denver where he studies social class and rural issue in higher education. He works for an EdTech company designing online courses and teaches research methods to online students. He lives in Denver, Colorado, USA, with his partner Mandell, his dog Kai, and thanks to the pandemic, a bunch of fish. I had the honor to listen to his stories of being a queer in the Higher Education field and I learned a lot from him. What are the experiences and challenges that he had?  | Find Steve: Twitter @sjenks352 or IG @centaurofattn |

📝Some Takeaways

➡️ Being physically further from family and older made things a bit safer and easier for Steve.

➡️ There are limits for Steve to refrain to do in public like holding hands.

➡️ Mental stress is a lot when going to new places.

➡️ The process of coming out. However, explaining racism and trans rights was more challenging for Steve. For Steve's dad, he didn't know what is right to say at first.

➡️ Some assumptions that Steve encountered and what we can think about.

➡️  Tips for allies: use inclusive languages, let them choose the time to come out and tell their stories,  ask genuine questions, believe what they identify with,

[China] Ep51 Being an American in Suburban Guangxi w/ Hank

[China] Ep51 Being an American in Suburban Guangxi w/ Hank

Hank and his wife Hayley live in the Denver area with their two dogs Gwen and Cody. Hank is a graduate student at Regis University and is pursuing dual licensure for counseling and marriage and family therapy. Hank spent a gap year abroad in China and had many fun experiences and interesting thoughts. He was shocked that there was no toilet paper in the public restrooms at first but also engaged himself with the locals while he was learning Mandarin.

What were your gap year or living abroad experiences? Come interact with us on FB or IG!

📝Randon Takeaways

➡️ Don't write something off just because of the first interaction.

➡️ You can demand people to treat you with respect when you mature.

➡️ Take the time to commute to think.

➡️ Recommendation for those who are going to China: Try to limit communication with home and your native language. Soak yourself in the new culture. Eliminate the things that can ground you in your comfort zone.

➡️ Hank's favorite food: baozi 包子 and daoxiaomian 刀削麵 (shaved noodles).

[Careers] Ep49 Applying for US Residency as a Foreign Graduate w/ Andrew

Andrew grew up in South Africa and went back to Taiwan to finish his medical degree in college (In Taiwan, one can start med school after high school). Later he had some cool internships in the U.S. and now he's becoming a medical resident at John Hopkins. How did he prepare his exams? How did he keep the perseverance for the huge workload of studies, research, and work? | United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) has a total of 3 steps and it tests medical clinical knowledge competency. | PubMed, the medical journal database. |

📝Tips for International MedicaI Resident in the U.S.

➡️ Internship, English proficiency, mentorship, and research/publication experience are crucial.

➡️ Better have 2 steps of USMLE, take step 3 if you want an H1B immigrant work visa

➡️ Perseverance: It can be a lonely path. Find some study buddies online.

➡️ Time management, goal setting, and self-talk in the process.

➡️ Be honest and genuine in the interviews.

➡️ Have faith and values in yourself.

[Cultures] Ep46 High School and All That Jazz w/ Charles Jai-Sheng Lin

[Cultures] Ep46 High School and All That Jazz w/ Charles Jai-Sheng Lin

Charles is an "ABC" (America-born Chinese) and his parents were from Taiwan. We talked about his experience in high school in California. Surprisingly, he also went to the buxiban (educational centers, 補習班). Unlike many other boys, he joined the marching band! He also shared his internships and educational aspects on high schoolers going into colleges. Are clubs, internships or volunteering experiences important? What was the most meaningful thing for Charles after he looked back? He may not be the aerospace expert now (XD) but he grew into a sincere and dedicated young man now! Definitely, my honor to know you, Charchar! | Find Charles on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/charlesjslin | IG @charles.linberg |  Email: charles.js.lin@berkeley.edu | You might be interested to watch The College Admissions Scandal (2019) on NetFlix |

📝Random Takeaways

✅ The buxiban Charles went to.

✅ What did those buxiban cover and support students for?

✅ The extracurriculars Charles did: marching band, color guard, Invention club

✅ What makes a student competitive in college admissions?

✅ The mini-dramas of pretense are universal!

✅ Charles found his identities and worth in his faith not in the college applications.

[International Student] Ep45 Thrive with a Thai w/ Thi

Thi is a travel and music-loving girl from Thailand. She shared her success stories of finding internships in the past and a job during Covid times. She was even generous enough to share her pocket list of Thai restaurants in Colorado: Woody's Wings N Things in Westminister & Thai Curry in Denver. Good luck on finding your OPT job and have a great life in the U.S, Thi!

| Thi's LinkedIn: thitikarnk | Listen to Ep21 How do We Find Comfort in the US as Asian Immigrants? w/ Agi about meeting friends on Meetup. |

📝 Key Takeaways

✅ Not all Thai like super spicy food.

✅ You might need to ask for to-go boxes when eating in the U.S.

✅ The tipping system is confusing.

✅ Take initiative in making friends with common interests. E.g. Meetup app

✅ Take care of the studies first before starting to work

✅ Networking is not just a talk but really gets people to know yourself. Ask around to see if they want an intern.

✅ Be proactive in connecting people in your field.
