Episode 1: Again. Beth Demmon, Beer Writer
This show is sponsored by The San Diego Botanical Gardens Botanical Wonderland! Reserve your tickets asap at: https://www.sdbgarden.org/botanicwonderland.htm
In this episode of The Cheers! North County podcast we replay the very first interview we did for this show. I was joined by talented San Diego-based food and beverage writer, and recent winner of the North American Guild of Beer Writers 2019 Diversity in Beer Writing Grant, Beth Demmon in April. Our conversation then focused on the social impact of losing access to our drinking establishments during the COVID-19 pandemic, her favorite local places, and expectations for the food and beverage industry as we progress to a new normal. The conversation seems weirdly applicable all these months later.
Thanks for listening.

Episode 12 - Brandon Hernandez, SanDiegoBeer.News & Cody Thompson, Beer Night In San Diego
For today’s show I virtually met up with Brandon Hernandez, founder of SanDiegoBeer.News who has also worked on the inside of the industry with some great companies including Alesmith and Societe Brewing. We were joined by one of my favorite beer podcasters Cody Thompson, founder and co-host of Beer Night in San Diego which is the longest running beer podcast around. Listening to Beer Night in San Diego the podcast is a lot like hanging out with a group of good friends and a six-pack.

Episode 11 - Tommy Kreamer, Gravity Heights Brewing
For today’s show I virtually met up with a very chill Tommy Kramer, the head brewer at Gravity Heights brewpub in Sorrento Mesa neighborhood of San Diego.
Gravity Heights happens to be fairly well set up for pandemic service with their large outdoor beer garden. You can check it out on @gravityheights on Instagram, and they’ve recently started canning beers, specifically their June Gloom hazy IPA, for people who still aren’t ready to head out for a pint on-site. You can find 4-packs around San Diego at Trader Joe’s, Bottle Craft and Bine & Vine.
Tommy and I chat about his round about path to brewing with stops in the Pacific North West and even Germany before coming back to North County San Diego, and why he left the acclaimed Lost Abbey/Port Brewing to team up with another legendary San Diego Brewer to form the team at Gravity Heights, and a lot about what will be going on the beer board at the brewpub.

Episode 10 - Taylor Steele, Solento Tequila
For today’s show I virtually met up with acclaimed surf filmmaker, artist and entrepreneur Taylor Steele about his newest endeavor, Solento Tequila (https://solentotequila.com/) based right out of Encinitas which you can actually already get in North County at Seaside Market, Lazy Acres Encinitas and Harvest Ranch Market.
Anyone who knows me outside this podcast knows I’m not a tequila person. In fact, I had not had even a drop of tequila since August of 1999, but because I’m at least semi-professional, and to show respect to my Cheers! guest, I decided it was time to give the agave based spirit a second chance. So in a moment, you’ll be an audio witness to my reintroduction to tequila with Taylor’s help, and then I’ll learn more about Solento’s efforts to create a high-quality, sustainable, organic tequila, Taylor’s connection to North County and his start filming some of his not yet famous surfing friends. Check out @Solento_Tequila!

For this episode of the Cheers! podcast, I virtually met up with Carlsbad City Council Person and candidate for 2022 California State Senate Dr. Priya Bhat-Patel. She’s running for the senate seat opening in District 36 which stretches along the Coast from just north of Solana Beach up to Laguna Nigel. I wanted to talk to Dr. Bhat-Patel, about why she was launching her campaign so early, how she got started in politics and how her current role in City Council is preparing her for the senate, and finally why it is important to have voices in politics from a wide range of backgrounds. Learn more about her campaign at www.priyaforsenate.com.

Episode 8 - Brittany Merrill Yeng, Skrewball Whiskey
For today’s show I virtually met up with Brittany Merrill-Yeng. She’s the co-founder, along with her husband Steven, of Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey. That is “screw” with k instead of a c. I wanted to talk to Brittany, in part, because Skrewball Whiskey is a local success story winning awards and rolling out nationwide, but also because of their Skrew Covid-19 and Skrew it forward charitable campaigns, and how being a mission driven business isn’t just about writing a check, but ingraining the mission into their business.

On this show I’m virtually meeting up with Meghan Williams and Nathan Serrato of the Escondido Creek Conservancy. Meghan is a development associate and Nathan is their marketing and volunteer manager. We’re going to talk about the efforts of the conservancy, how the pandemic has impacted their efforts and some of the special projects they have been working on.
The Escondido Creek Conservancy is focused on the health and vitality of the Escondido Creek Watershed. Since 1991, they’ve helped to preserve thousands of acres of land. They also act as land stewards for some of North County’s favorite places like the Elfin Forest.
Their work isn’t contained just acquiring the land, but also to creating safe outdoor spaces for the flora and fauna that inhabit that land, and places for people to explore and interact with the land. You can find out all the details and support those efforts at escondidocreek.org.

Episode 5 - Yiga Miyashiro, Saint Archer Brewing Company
Today I’m having a beer with Yiga Miyashiro. For the past seven years he’s been the Director of Brewing Operations at Saint Archer Brewing Company. Before that he began his career at Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, and then worked his way up through the ranks at Pizza Port. We talk about the Saint Archer Research and Development program putting out small batches of beer at Saint Archer, the importance and value of mentorship in the brewing industry, and how they’ve maintained a scrappy vibe.
And if you’re a listening hospital worker or first responders know you get half off beer at both Saint Archer Tasting room, and they’re donating $1 to the United States Bartenders Guild for every case of to-go beer sold at the tasting rooms.

Episode 4 - Jeff, Jeff & Joe from I Like Beer the Podcast
We welcome the I Like Beer the Podcast team to this episode of Cheers! presented by The Coast News. Part of thee of the team from the show, Jeff, Jeff and Joe, and I talk about their shows roots. I Like Beer the Podcast often starts with beer, specifically the who and why stories behind the beer, then they veer off into tangents about octopi or dad jokes or travel or any number of things.
This isn’t just a show about beer or only for beer lovers, rather it is a showcase of the friendship between these hosts who’ve been friends much longer than they’ve been podcasters as they lean into the meandering curves of conversation that come when you’re comfortable with each other after having been connected for so many years. So, not just another beer podcast, but a life podcast.

Episode 3 - Dande Bagby, Bagby Beer Co
This week my guest is Dande Bagby, the CoFounder, CoOwner, CoRunner, Basically, CoEverything of Bagby Beer Company in Oceanside California which she operates with her husband Jeff. Back In March I spoke with Dande about their brewery shutdown announcement due to COVID-19, and how uncertain the future was not just for the brewery but for all of us. The brewery is reopening for takeaway with online ordering at bagbybeer.com, and I reached out to find out why.
As always Dande was charming, insightful, and our conversation meanders around touching on beer, operating a small business, dealing with COVID, and where she’d take a mini-vacation if the pandemic were over tomorrow.
And because it seems important to note, there were several very relaxed beagles wandering in and out of the room behind her during our interview.

We must stand up against racism in all forms, and to commit to continuing to learn, support, vote, and use our voices to continue to promote this cause. The murder of George Floyd, and too many others, has re-shined a light on our failings as a society, and reignited people worldwide. This demand for change can’t stop just because it is uncomfortable, inconvenient, or because there are those trying to distract from these issues. The need for action, for advocating for those that need it, for black people, and for people of color impacted systemic racism isn’t going away.
