Self-censorship has been on my mind lately. We see the censoring apparatus at work more obviously than ever as some of our favorite podcasters, YouTube channels, Instagram accounts have episodes or videos pulled down, fact check icons show up below their posts, etc. We've seen the censorship around the last election, and with Robert F. Kennedy having multiple episodes of podcasts pulled down just by being a guest, it's very obvious to everyone that your words are being watched in some way. I worry about the impact that has on peoples' willingness to speak their mind and say what they think is true. I know it has an impact on me, not just on my public facing work, but also when I write anything, text, capture my thoughts in a Google Doc or an Evernote. It's not that someone's there over your shoulder looking at every word, it's just that it's all being compiled, and then suddenly and seemingly arbitrarily, you're receiving a notification that your episode or post has been pulled. Writing is definitely a form of therapy. When I stay consistent with writing, I see huge benefits:

• Mental clarity, less fog
• Identify patterns of thoughts
• See aspects of goals I'm going after
• Less hopelessness
• Helps to repeat positive thoughts and reinforce good habits
• Builds the muscle of consistency
• Helps with sleep

It helps me get the thoughts out of my head and onto the page. This puts some distance between my thoughts and my self-image, which ultimately helps process these thoughts, not run away from them or let them control me.

I quit my job a few years ago to start my own business, and lately, a few friends have reached out to me about doing this or some version of it.

Ultimately that business failed. But I learned about myself, what my motivations are, how the allure of "freedom" can actually be a trap.
