E52: Kat Donatello | Love Is A Four Legged Word
Kat Donatello is my guest this week. Endurance athlete, race director, entrepreneur, dog owner, cancer survivor…I’m telling you, hold onto your hats because this is a great story! What started as a kitchen project to make a homemade remedy for her aging Duck Tolling Retriever Brady, and something to take the edge off her new Labrador Retriever Austin, would eventually become an incredibly successful pet supplement company.

E51: Rich Lavers | Dare To Leave The Beaten Path
our way. That’s the funny thing about sharing epic experiences with friends, regardless of the outcome the stories bond us together. Although Rich has purposely pivoted away from trail and mountain running (that’s a great story too), we get together at least once a year to host the Ralph Waldo Emerson Trail Race in Concord, NH. Rich talks about the history of the event including why he’s still involved as well as an important update on the new course changes.

E50: Valerie Abradi & Mindy Slovinsky | The Amazing Adventures Of Scout & Squirrel
Valerie Abradi & Mindy Slovinsky are my guests this week. Better known within the Maine trail running community as Scout & Squirrel, this dynamic duo direct Maine’s only 100 mile trail race, the Riverlands 100. Held each May in the beautiful Androscoggin State Park in Turner this ultra’s charm is matched only by it’s deceptive difficulty. But don’t take my word for it, Val & Mindy break down what makes this race special and especially challenging.

E49: Dwight Hartman | It's My Own Bloody Fault
Dwight Hartman is my guest. We’ve been friends since the day we met in Mrs. Bosse’s Lollipop Nursey School many, many years ago. And over the last 45+ years we’ve competed together in organized sports, shoulder to shoulder, as youths, adolescents, teenagers, and eventually as adults. These shared experiences transcend friendship. They have inextricably bonded us together. In this episode we reminisce and story tell some of the most memorable moments including his experiences at some of the toughest endurance events in the world.

E48: Sean Snow | The Power Of Possibility Thinking
Sean Snow is my guest. For those who follow him on social media, his daily positive posts are inspirational and uplifting. And they are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise swamp of negativity. Yet I suspect that very few know the story behind those posts. In a very real sense they are an integral component of his continued success as a 56 year old endurance athlete. Finally, in order to more fully appreciate Sean’s unique approach I present to you a challenge. In the center of a blank piece of paper draw nine dots in three rows of three. The square should be approximately 1 inch by 1 inch. Now without lifting your pen from the paper, draw four lines that connect all nine dots. It might be helpful to pause the show for a moment after this intro and attempt to solve the puzzle.

E47: Scott Graham | Forecast Calls For Pain, Heavy At Times
Scott Graham is my guest this week. For runners, the most famous stretch of road in all the world is the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston, MA. Landmarks such as the Ashland Clock Tower, the Framingham Train Station, the screaming co-eds at Wellesley College, the “Forever Young” statue in Newton, Heartbreak Hill, Coolidge Corner, the Citgo sign, and of course Copley Square give the route a unique character. And after running 36 consecutive Boston Marathons (with #37 coming up this April) one character, Scott Graham, knows this route better than anyone I know. He shares some of his most memorable Patriots’ Day experiences as well as some valuable pearls of wisdom for anyone racing the event for the first time.

E46: Nate Sanel | These Are Heady Times
Nate Sanel joins the podcast this week. In a very real sense, this episode has been six years in the making and started as a group mountain bike ride in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 2017. Fast forward to the present day and the use of cannabis generally and in endurance sports specifically has become more common but not necessarily better understood. Through personal experience, as both an elite level ultradistance athlete and a highly educated user of cannabis, Nate provides an interesting and thought-provoking perspective on this once taboo subject. Now it’s important to note that all of the information in this episode is for entertainment purposes only. Anyone interested in pursing the use of cannabis should start by educating themselves and then having a discussion with their healthcare provider. Additionally, all users should be 21 years of age or older and have an informed understanding of the laws of their state, the laws in the countries in which they travel, policies of their employers, and rules governing their sport. Lastly as Nate will point out, with regard to the effects of cannabis, everyone is a study of one.

E45: Ken Young (Part 2) | We Carry The Summit Within
In Part 2 of my conversation with Ken Young we pick back up where we left off in his mountaineering evolution. It’s 2016 and he is on the expedition of a lifetime. A three week trip to the Peruvian Andes including a multi-day trek to Machu Pichu, two 18,000+ foot summits, and an attempt at the 22,205 foot goliath Huascaran which didn’t quite go to plan. After Peru he returned home and re-organized his priorities and refocused his local efforts on a couple of pretty cool projects including “The Grid” and his latest passion, bushwhacking the NH48.

E44: Ken Young (Part 1) | The Best View Comes After The Hardest Climb
Ken Young is my guest this week. As outdoor adventure resumes go, he’s in rarified air…literally. His first registered hike was Mt. Washington and Mt. Jefferson in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in June of 2000. Six years later he would stand atop the 14,411 foot Mt. Rainer in Washington State. That trip kicked off a short but incredibly memorable mountaineering phase of his life that saw him climb some of the highest peaks in the world including four of the seven summits. In part one of this two part episode we chat about why he got into the sport of hiking, his transition to mountaineering, and his experience on Mt. McKinley in May of 2011. A tragic month that saw seven climbers die.

E43: Amanda Richmond | The Baby Bounce
Amanda Richmond is my guest this week. Is it a coincidence or something more that at 40-something years old she set PR’s in nearly every distance she races since the birth of her daughter Riley in July of 2021. That list by the way includes running a 2:54 marathon just 9 months after giving birth via c-section. She appropriately credits part of that post-partum running success to her ability to continue to run through most of her pregnancy. She shares her approach to running now, as a single mom, as well as how she copes with running-related injuries.

E42: Jessie Laurie & Steve Waterman | Seeing What Is Invisible To Others

E41: Kevin St. Laurent | All I Really Want To Do
Kevin St. Laurent joins the show this week. By his own account he’s been running his entire life. His parents are runners so he started running as a youth. In high school he was an average to above average runner. In college his running took a back seat. After college he worked to focus again on his running but struggled to maintain any kind of consistency. That was until he “cracked the code” and unlocked an entirely level of performance previously unavailable to him. Now in his 30’s he’s setting PR’s and winning races left and right. He shares how he’s done it.

E40: Tim Cox | For The Love Of Running
Tim Cox is my guest this week. When it’s all said and done, he will undoubtedly go down as one of the most successful New Hampshire scholastic running coaches of all time. If you ask me, the most interesting part of his story is not the accomplishments, but how he got here. In life we are all given the opportunity for experiences to define us or to shape us. It’s always our choice. As a schoolboy in Suffern, NY the lessons he learned through athletics had an incredibly powerful positive impact on him. As a collegiate athlete his experience was quite different but nonetheless transformative. Through it all, he learned valuable lessons about life from the leaders, coaches, and mentors that still mean so much to him.

E39: Kara Haas | Once A Runner
Kara Haas joins the show. Recently she took the reigns of the New England-based All Terrain Runner Series. This fun competitive series challenges runners on five different surfaces; track, trail, road, mountain, and cross country. It’s a great opportunity to try something new and experience a new community of people. We discuss each event in the series. Kara of course is no stranger to the sport of running. In fact, she’s dedicated her entire adult life to it. Several years ago a devasting hamstring injury almost took the sport away from her. How she worked her way back and the lessons she learned along the way is an important story.

E37: Kate Ouellette | Smooth Seas Do Not Make Skillful Sailors
Kate Ouellette joins the podcast this week. Her rise to prominence as an ultradistance cyclist has been nothing short of meteoric. In 2016, out of necessity, she reluctantly bought and started riding a fat bike. Five years later she competed in the famous Trans America Bike Race riding 4200 miles in 17 days finishing 2nd place overall (and first female). That year she was also the only person to complete the ride on an indoor trainer! Do the math quickly and you realize that’s 250 miles a day! On an indoor trainer! While that’s mind-bending for most, Kate’s life experiences have taught her that with a deep enough belief in herself and a commitment to do whatever is necessary, nothing is unimaginable. As any cyclist will attest to; a bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn.

E35: Tyler Lupien & Jenny Villeneuve | The Hitchcock Experience
Tyler Lupien & Jenny Villeneuve are my guests this week. This duo was recently part of a three person team that successfully got one ultradistance runner (Tyler) to the finish line of his first 100 mile footrace. Having a team on site to support a runner during this type of challenge isn’t required. Plenty go it alone. Ever the stoic, initially Tyler had planned to go it solo. While some may say it’s a luxury, others would argue it’s part of a great plan. And while no 100 mile finish is ever guaranteed, having a capable and responsive crew can sometimes make the difference between a buckle and a DNF. Such was case for Tyler and his crew. This is their Hitchcock Experience 100 mile story.

E34: Patty Higgins | Life Begins At The Moment Of Surrender
Patty Higgins is my guest this week. For decades she carried with her the heavy burden of a secret only the inner most of her inner circle knew about. While outwardly she appeared to those that knew her as a dedicated endurance athlete and successful professional, inwardly she felt ashamed, embarrassed, scared, and alone. Then on December 16, 2016 out of desperation she finally surrendered. Her life hasn’t been the same since. Her journey is one of possibility and a deep sense of gratitude for the gift of each new day.

E32: Kevin Tilton | His Life Is Going Uphill
New England mountain running legend Kevin Tilton joins the podcast. When your vanity plate is MT&GOAT you’ve set certain expectations. As a 2-time US Mountain Running Team member with a PR of 1:03:42 at the Mt. Washington Road Race (NH), two Top 10 finishes at Pikes Peak Ascent (CO), and the fastest known times for both the trail ascent and round trip on Mt. Washington he’s lived up to it. But recently he’s spent more time on two wheels then he has on two feet and wouldn’t you know he’s pretty good at riding his bike uphill. Next year he’s planning to do something nobody has ever done. Think big, think really BIG!

E31: Brandon Baker | Inconvenience Yourself

E30: Heather Cote | Your Safety Is Yours
Heather Cote is my guest this week. Women deserve to run without fear. But it’s a shameful reality that here in the United States that’s not possible for many women. A recent survey by Runner’s World reveled that more than 8 out of 10 women have been harassed while running. And the tragic headlines about violence against female runners highlights the importance of the topics of safety and personal protection. Heather’s professional experience in law enforcement coupled with her resume as an endurance athlete make her the perfect person to speak with authority about these issues.

E29: Bethany Rice | Even The Smallest One Can Change The World
The newly crowned Ms. Maryland Bethany Rice joins the show this week. Not only is she the queen of The Old Line State, but she’s also an accomplished endurance athlete, author, and the founder of a non-profit organization created to promote and support literacy. In fact, her platform and community outreach revolve around literacy which has been the focus of her professional career.

E28: Lisa Ransom Martin | Messages From The Universe
Lisa Ransom Martin is my guest this week. As far as positive uplifting forces of nature go, she ranks right up there for me. I have always enjoyed sharing time with her. She also happens to have an extraordinary story of overcoming not one, but two, significant orthopedic surgeries in a little over a years time. And what’s most fascinating about these surgeries is that she actually feels like they changed the trajectory of her life in a positive way. And her perspective on athletics as a driving force in her life for growth and change is an important message for all of us to hear.

E26: Arlon Chaffee | Put Some Gravel In Your Travel

E25: Jeremiah Johnson | The Road To Redemption

E24: Joe Viger | Capturing The Moment
Professional photographer, entrepreneur, coffee connoisseur, and gravelist Joe Viger joins the podcast. In the New England endurance sports world he’s known for capturing iconic and memorable images. If you know a mountain, ultra, or trail runner in the northeast, it’s likely their profile picture is Joe’s work. His ability to tell a story through photography is legendary. It’s easy to see why his services are in such high demand. Our conversation centers around why the endurance racing community is so important to him as well as his own personal fitness journey. He’s really a fascinating guest.

E15: Timothy Lindsey (Part 2) | What's Your ONE Thing?
Professional productivity coach Timothy Lindsey joins me for the second part of our conversation about the book The ONE Thing. Ultimately success comes down to being appropriate in the moments of your life that matter the most. You do that by asking yourself the question; What’s the ONE thing I need to do such that by doing it makes everything else easy or unnecessary?. With this focusing question we then seek to live with purpose, live by priority, and live for productivity. Tim and I explore these concepts and more.

E14: Timothy Lindsey (Part 1) | Time Bandits & Energy Vampires
I get the chance to chat with professional productivity coach Timothy Linsdey. In addition to being an expert in the field of producing extraordinary results, he also happens to be a great friend, neighbor, and business partner. Several years ago he gave me a book that transformed by personal and professional life. The book is The One Thing; The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results. Because he uses this book professionally, I don’t know any more qualified to expound on the key concepts. If you want achieve extraordinary results, give a listen to the next 90 minutes.
