On this week's episode I'm joined by a man with a spectacular story of tragedy and triumph. Meet Melvin Battiest. Mel is someone that I have the pleasure of working with and who has shared bits of his story with me. He spent 38 years of his life locked up for a crime he wasn't guilty of. In that time he got to help countless amounts of inmates find their way into spirituality and now he has taken that same skillset and he is doing the same outside for people being reintroduced into society after a long prison sentence. This is one hell of a story from one fine example of human tenacity.

Today the Sober Caucus met up for a post-convention business meeting and we crossed a pretty monumental threshold. We are able to offer a couple of scholarships to people seeking recovery due to all of the amazing love we have gotten via donations and the like. So to commemorate this milestone, I figured I would do a throwback to an episode from January 2021 where I interviewed Kim Ruff and the concept of a "Straightedge Caucus" was born. I had the absolute honor of sitting down with Britt, co-host of the FAB Show and someone who has overcome some serious obstacles in their life, to discuss her journey through food addiction and binge eating. When we talk about addiction, so often do we focus on the substance utilized and not enough attention is given to the underlying problems that led us to those behaviors. Britt does a spectacular job of pointing this out as well as being gut-level honest about her struggles and accomplishments. I, for one, and beyond grateful that she had the courage to come on the show and talk about this and I hope it reaches others who need to hear it. Having been someone that has struggled with the same issues, this was a nice shot of "hope" for the road I have in front of me.

Today's guest is a shining example of what happens when an addict of the hopeless variety grabs a hold of recovery and truly turns their life around. Not only is Christopher someone who managed to get and stay clean, but he has also taken that experience and used it as fuel for several initiatives in his local community not the least of which was to get local drug policy changed so addicts are sent to treatment rather than to prison. This was a REALLY great interview with the 2020 LP Vice Presidential candidate, Spike Cohen. I'd heard that Spike was someone in recovery but only ever heard him briefly mention his story before and really wanted to delve into it. Not only did we get to touch on some of the finer points of what brought him into living a clean lifestyle but we broke down some of the lessons learned along the way. All in all this is yet another fantastic story of hope that declares there is abundant life after addiction.

Ricky came across my radar last year when he was running against incumbent Tom Cotton for Arkansas Senate. There's something about the way he is able to spread the message of liberty while also having been involved in ministry that has earned my respect. We talked about everything from ending the wars of aggression to the abysmal state that the criminal justice system is currently in. Really solid interview today regarding the future of the LP and the potential direction the party should take. In seeking to end the war on drugs, political means need to be entertained and what better way to do that than by good old political blackmail. This is still a new concept and I'm sure as time goes along it will become much more nuanced, but for the time being this interview does a great job laying the groundwork for what should be a really compelling discussion in the libertarian community.

Hayden and I go way back and have maintained a friendship throughout the slew of ups and downs that life brings. He's one of those people that when I met him it became clear that we understood each other on a real level. We talk about some of that journey and also some of the more humorous points of recovery.

Today we get to hear from my lovely wife, Mrs Clean Libertarian herself (Hilary) on what it was like to watch a loved one relapse, and what it means to be in a relationship with someone actively pursuing recovery. Really great episode today where I invited on Ashley who is a lawyer and far more in the know on the legal aspect of drug policy than I am to come and talk about where we've seen drug policy go the right way and where we haven't. She is joined by long time friend of the CLP, Kevin Hobbie who expands on some of the finer points and between the two of them some killer nuance is presented. This is the conversation that swayed me into dropping my endorsement of legalization over decriminalization.

This was a really fun episode! I love when people who have been through hell and back share their story of hope with others and this episode is no exception to that! Wilder tells us about where she came from, what happened, and what it's like for her now. I hope yall enjoy this awesome story of compassion, self examination, and determination. 

I really enjoyed this episode. Jay is one of those sage individuals who really knows how to convey his principled stances and it was great hearing from him regarding the concept of bottom unity and what (if any) relation there is to libertarianism and the growing LibSoc movement. We also delve into Hoppeans and the utterly brainless "movement" the is the "Libertarians for Joe" group that is attempting to gain traction.

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Joe Hartman regarding his run for congress in Michigan's 8th district as well as his position on ending the Drug War, he then went on to discuss something I haven't really thought about: ending Daylight Savings Time. All in all this was a really fun conversation and a closer look at where the government gets it wrong, both in regards to addiction and our most precious commodity...our time.
