"Aiight, The Election Is Over. What Comes Next?" Featuring Morgan Harper and Cam Harris
This special episode of Columbus Can't Wait was recorded just two weeks after the mid-term elections. Now that the dust has settled and the results are in, we know that the house has flipped, Georgia is headed to another runoff, the GOP ran the table in Ohio, Democrats kept the senate, the Red Wave was more like a splash, Pelosi is stepping down and Trump is Running again.
But what does that really mean in the grand scheme of things? On this special edition episode of CCW, we were joined by Morgan Harper and Cam Harris to really break down the election, the Ohio Senate race (Tim Ryan's AND Sherrod Brown's), House Leadership, rising stars in the Ohio Democratic party, Trump 🙃, and alot more.
The election was not a finish line--it was a starting point. There is A LOT of work to do if we are going to keep our democracy. And as always, remember that you either do politics or politics are going to do you.

"Why Does Everybody Keep Saying Democracy Is On The Ballot?"
“If we lose our democracy we won’t get it back.”

S2E9: The Unbossed Network
When we started Columbus Can't Wait we understood the legacy and power of Black owned and operated media. We like to think that we're following in the footsteps of publications that have always inspired us such as Freedom's Journal, The North Star, and The Chicago Defender which paved the way for magazines like Jet, Essence, and Ebony and of course, the TV network BET. Without them there would be no CCW.
That’s why on this week's episode we spoke with another local, Black independent media maker, DaVante Goins, the founder of The Unbossed Network.
Follow and support The Unbossed Network on Facebook.

S2E8: Morgan Harper
This week we welcome back friend of the show, and former grassroots congressional candidate, Morgan Harper. Morgan has been a fierce advocate for addressing police violence in Columbus and has used her social media platform to draw national attention to the police murders of Casey Goodson Jr., Andre Hill and Ma'Khia Bryant. Reimagining public safety was a focus of her 2020 congressional platform in which she offered the following reforms and community-based solutions:
Empower Citizens and Communities
- Federally-fund community-based violence interrupters, community members called before the police, particularly in cases of mental health episodes
- Mandate civilian review boards to oversee incidents of police violence
- Federally-fund community mental health centers
End Violent Policing
- Eliminate Qualified Immunity by clarifying the true intent of Section 1983 and protecting 4th Amendment rights
- Mandate standardized nationwide police training around deescalation
- End the 1033 Program that provides military weapons and machinery to local police departments
- Require departments to dismiss officers who kill unarmed civilians
Increase Transparency and Accountability
- Require independent investigations and prosecutions of all police killings
- Report all incidents of excessive police force to a federal database

S2E4: Attorney Sean Walton
This week we welcome back friend of the show and experienced attorney in the fields of serious personal injury and civil rights litigation, Sean Walton.
Sean consistently represents several families in Columbus who have had loved ones murdered at the hands of the Columbus Police Department -- including Casey Goodson Jr., Henry Green V and too many more.
As an Adjunct Professor at Capital University Law School, Sean lectures frequently on issues ranging from knowing your rights and how to properly document instances of excessive police force to trends and best practices in personal injury and civil rights litigation.
On this week's episode we discuss how the mechanisms of white supremacy, corruption in the Columbus Police Department, unchecked power of the Fraternal Order of Police, establishment politics invested in the status quo, negligent local journalism, and a criminal justice system designed to uphold white supremacy work together to make Columbus one of the most dangerous cities for Black people to live in the U.S.
Uniquely qualified to shine a light on exactly how the underbelly of Columbus operates, we are so lucky to have Sean back on the show share his wealth of knowledge with us.

S2E2: Justice For Casey Goodson Jr.
In this week's episode we speak with Casey Goodson Jr.'s mother, Ms. Tamala Payne, and the family's attorney, Sean Walton.
Casey Goodson, Jr. was murdered on December 4, 2020 by Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Meade. Casey Goodson Jr. was outside his grandmother’s home when he was shot and killed by Meade. The shooting has been ruled a homicide by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
This is what we know so far:
- A Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy was working with the U.S. Marshal’s Southern Ohio Fugitive Task Force to look for a fugitive.
- Goodson was not the targeted fugitive and is not alleged to have committed any crimes and has no criminal background.
- He was licensed to carry a concealed weapon and Ohio does not prohibit the open carrying of firearms.
- Federal investigators, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the FBI in Cincinnati and the Columbus police are now investigating the case.
- No one in the family saw Casey brandish a weapon. Casey believed in safe and legal gun ownership.
- We know that nothing has been presented by any agency that would justify why Casey was shot. We have not been presented with any documentation that supports this was a justified shooting.
- A witness from the family did see Meade point a gun at Casey’s uncle, who was holding his toddler child at the time.
- The family was forced out of the house, held separately and treated as suspects instead of a scared and grieving family. Police attempted to keep Casey’s five year old brother from his mother.
- Casey’s phone is in police custody so we have no information regarding anything that would be answered by having access to his phone.
- There has not been any video camera or security camera footage of the shooting recovered at this time. According to media reports, there is no bodycam footage either.
The family’s request is that people across the country join the family of Casey Goodson in solidarity in celebrating Casey’s life and making demands for justice for his death and the deaths of countless Black people who have been unjustly killed by police officers.

S2E1: Justice 4 Trae
In Season 2 of Columbus Can't Wait we are focusing our attention squarely on the long history of police violence in Columbus, Ohio and the impunity of the Columbus Police Department. We believe families, we believe parents and caretakers, and we believe that they have the right to have their stories heard. We will speak with parents who have lost their sons to police violence, to elected officials, to activists, independent media outlets and community members doing the work to make change.
In our first episode, we speak with Hyme Darson, a forerunner for justice, an agent for change on behalf of mothers whose children were tragically, violently murdered and slain at the hands of police officers.
Hyme Darson is a single parent of four children including one daughter and three sons. Trae Darson, her third child, was murdered by Columbus Police Department officer Larry Whitman on August 30th, 2006 at Sunshine Int'l Food Market off of 161 on the North side of Columbus.
In her first interview, Ms. Darson shares her son’s story, including what type of a child he was, the runaround she received in the aftermath of her son’s murder, the inaction taken by county prosecutors in the search for justice for Trae and the many discrepancies found in the official record and statements released by the CPD.
Please listen and share her story widely.
***Please note that this conversation may be upsetting and difficult to hear and we encourage you to take in the episode in spurts, taking breaks as necessary.***
And as a note on the stance of Columbus Can’t Wait: We demand justice for Trae Darson. We stand in solidarity with Hyme Darson and ask for officer Larry L. Whitman II to come forward with the truth and demonstrate accountability. We request that the case be reopened and all evidence become available to the Darson family, including Trae's personal items.
