Spring, Change, and The Garden Electric

Snow, Faux Spring and The Garden Electric
Snow, crocus, daffodils, and more. Spring has been plugged in and I can feel the electricity of the season. I had the honor of speaking with the Creative Director of The Philadelphia Flower Show, Seth Pearsoll. As you know, it doesn't take much for me to get excited about anything flower related. After speaking with Seth, I am really plugged in and ready for The Philadelphia Flower Show. I hope you attend this year as it is back indoors with a new design and more fun!
I am speaking at a private event for the Charlotte Garden Club this week about gardening in urban environments. You can garden in any size space you have.
I am also speaking at Wing Haven I am pinching myself). I have wanted to visit this garden for quite a while and now I AM SPEAKING THERE. My topic - The Garden is the Elixir We Need. With so much happening in the world today, the garden touches all of our senses and is often a place of healing.
After a much-needed pushback from social media to re-ground, reset and re-establish myself, please consider following me...

I am taking a measured approach to being in the garden as well as sharing the garden. I hope that you stay tuned for the adventures to come - they are worth it - I PROMISE.
We will begin to focus on people, places, and plants to keep the interest going.I hope you continue to join me. There will also be small group workshops - stay tuned. The silence has been for a reason!
Stay tuned the best is yet to come. Episode 8 - Valerie Crisostomo, Black Girl Florists - Finding Comfort In Community
There is an organization specifically focused on Black women who are in floristry. It provides space to grow their businesses, increase their skill set, and collaborate. Black Girl Florists, founded by Valerie Crisostomo, is based in Atlanta. The Board of Directors has members from around the country. This year, Black Girl Florists is hosting its first conference. March 25 - 27th the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel will provide a place for anyone who loves flowers and is interested in supporting Black women in floristry.
Black Flora has arrived. This book means so much to me. Long overdue, the complied stories of choices made, healing, and simply pivoting in place is a gift to my community. Seeing others who look like you and are enjoying what they do can be quite meaningful. As the journey continues, I have found many other Black entrepreneurs that are floral farmers, florists, events specialists, and more. It is not hard to take the additional step and seek out a small Black flower farmer and support them. Taking a longer look and identifying a Black florist to use at any event would help sustain a small budding business. Black Flora has opened my eyes as an author and future flower farmer, to simply imagine the possibilities and allow nothing to get in my way.
You can order Black Flora here. I am proud of the diverse communities that will benefit from this book, as well as the other books that enlighten all of us to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion in all walks of life.
I also co-authored another book, The Urban Garden - 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City. Kathy Jentz and I compiled the concepts we have seen or experienced in our collective years of gardening in urban settings. We are grateful to offer tips to inspire or at least cause you to think about the possibilities of beautifying your space. The garden is ever-evolving, which keeps it interesting. As we celebrate Women's History month, consider supporting two local women who love to share the joys of gardening. As a native Washingtonian, I am happy that most of these ideas can be utilized from the inner city to the suburban areas. Urban gardens are everywhere, this book is a great tool for any gardener. Interested in a journey to see small urban gardens? Consider meeting me and Mrs. Know It All in Buffalo! We are planning a garden experience in Buffalo, New York for the 2022 Buffalo Garden Walk. When Black women gather, there is bound to be some fun and giggles. With Abra Lee, there is a bond that allows us to know we are doing what we do for a reason. Horticulture is a field that we know and it offers endless opportunities for anyone - even minority youth - to excel. As I always say, #wegrowmorethancollards and we really do. Around this time of the season, we are enjoying the green - yet waiting for autumn. The rain or lack thereof allows us to notice what flowers are the true soldiers of the garden with or without rain. Episode 26 - Joseph and his Comic Book Guide to Growing Food
Joseph Tychonievich and Liz Anna Kozik have created a book for this time. During this month dedicated to Kid's gardening, The Comic Book Guide to Growing Food is one that needs consideration. I personally see this as a book that will appeal to young people and perhaps encourage them to see what it is all about. So many times books on gardening are very "adult-like" or too juvenile. This book capture s many different generations as well as types of gardeners.
The poem, Dig In by George Shannon was quite appropriate as we want to encourage our young people to dig into the earth and discover the joy of gardening.

My co-host Peggy Riccio and I went to visit David in his garden in August. The beauty was absolutely amazing and better than the photo's in the book. It was a terrific day in the midst of a pandemic. I recently spoke to David as we begin to embrace November. With two seasons to go, A Year at Brandywine Cottage really is an unexpected gift to gardeners anywhere. It is October in 2020. In the midst of a pandemic, as we are minimizing our movements with masks on, let's also remember that Cancer is still in our midst. Episode 32 - Autumnal Bliss, Conversations with Rob Cardillo, and Robert Frost
Picture a walk in the woods at this time of the year. Noticing the leaves that have fallen from the trees above. In the quiet of the morning, I consider the sound of the leaves gracing the grounds a song to greet the day. Like colorful chimes releasing kisses to make the walk quite the pleasure. Episode 28 - Joy, The One Symposium and Planting Positivity
Joy is something that we need more of today. Noticing simple pleasures along the way are gifts from Mother Nature. Who doesn't like presents? I gather as I walk, whether in my garden or simply as I engage with nature. I wrote about it on my blog. Click here to find out more.
I also gather terrific friends. Louise Clark is one of those friends. She is a GardenComm member as well and we have served in the capacity of Region II Directors together. Louise recently started a new business called Verdant Earth Educators. It is a much-needed entity in the world of Horticulture today. I recently chatted with Louise about what she does, her love of horticulture as well as The One Symposium. If you are interested, here is the link to enroll and learn from some of the leaders in horticulture today.
The power of the words we share. If kind, they bring joy. If unkind they can certainly become the weeds we do not need. R.H. Swaney offers us some sage advice in the poem Seeds and Gardens...

Episode 26 - Lady Farmer...Slow Living Locally
I first met Lady Farmer at Monticello a few years ago. It was their initial launch and I was impressed by the mission as well as their purpose. Existing in a slow, measured way can be fulfilling and educational. How many times since we have been unintentionally pausing have you figured out that patience is quite the virtue? I continue to follow them online and their staying power speaks volumes.
THIS was the year I wanted to attend the Slow Living Conference. Now that we are in this period of unintentional pausing, the opportunity to really pay attention to what their mission is, what they say, and more is certainly more clear right now. From their book, online yoga, and more, their connections to just a slower, more mindful way of living are authentic.

Episode 23 - Resetting on the Maryland Legacy Wine Trail, Kim Rush Lynch and The Face of Fall
Maryland offers so many different agricultural opportunities. I recently explored two Maryland Wineries. Since the opportunity to #resetrenewrestore in Europe was not possible, experiencing Maryland as a local has been my mission. As 2020 makes us settle into our perspective places and not travel abroad, getting to know the local agriculture community has been quite an adventure. A few weekends ago, I spent a little time at Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards. Susan and Bob were the best hosts for a Friday night small group gathering for wine tasting. I wrote a review on the blog. You can read it here. Let me tell you, writing and a glass or two of Rooted is a terrific way to embrace the flavor, as well as the beauty of Maryland Agriculture. I also discovered Romano Winery and Vineyards. Jo-Anne was another welcoming presence as well. There is something about a Maryland Welcome that simply makes you want to linger. Click to find out about Robin Hill and Romano Winery,

Kim Rush Lynch is a force in Maryland Agriculture. She is supportive and knowledgeable about the many programs, opportunities, and more. Her excitement about what Prince Georges County offers is reflected in her enthusiasm as she shares a bit about what she does. Episode 22 - Let It Be, Edwina Von Gal and Birds
Let it be is all I could say as this period of unintentional pausing has made all of us pay attention. Going out into the garden every day to weed or water was less important. Admiring the beauty of the garden in real-time was a gift. The opportunity to witness trees burst into bloom or plants come to life has been amazing. If it were any other year, I would have to make time to weed, make time to capture a few blooms and have very little time actually enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. I wrote about this on my blog recently as I realized sometimes, you have to Let It Be
I recently heard Edwina Von Gal speak about the virtues of nature on a fantastic webinar shared by The Garden Conservancy. The Garden Conservancy has introduced informative virtual programming this year. Edwina was one of the guests who I consider a gift to my world. Please enjoy this conversation as you reconsider your fall garden pursuits....and remember the birds. To find out more, email: edwina@234birds.org . Episode 21 - England On My Mind, Carex Travel and Thoughts on Garden Traveling
Last year I was oh so excited about my trip to Paris. Why? I included England on this journey and I took my Aunt who was still absorbing the loss of her husband. Most passionate gardeners know that the garden is a healer and I can not tell you how much I miss it this year. I did share a visit to Chiswick on my blog. You can read about it here
Carex travel is a boutique travel company owned and operated by Carolyn Mullet, a well-known garden designer in the DC Metropolitan area and also known for her fabulously well-curated tours to the gardens of Piet Oudolf. When you travel with Carolyn, it is certainly a trip to remember. I hear she also has a book coming out right in time for holiday giving as well as a few exciting tours for 2021. Travel. A beautiful poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. This poem reminded me of my Eurostar adventure last year between Paris and England with my Aunt. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to have spent some memorable moments with her as we galavanted around Paris and England. Those are unique memories that I will cherish. Even now, I am dreaming of a future trip or two back to my beloved Paris, perhaps an opportunity to linger in more English gardens, revisit The Cotswold's, or perhaps attending an organized tour with a few friends. Are you dreaming of traveling when we can move about freely again? European travel can often lead to cherished opportunities with friends. I personally cannot wait to travel again.

Episode 19 - Pretty Smart Compost Bin, Fungi Fun with the Crazy Botanist and Life Cycles
Smart Pots has an awesome and beautiful alternative to the traditional compost bin. I like to say that my compost bin is always dressed to receive more things to compost. She blends in with the landscape and has given me a reason to look at the leaves that will inevitably fall in a new way. No more hauling from the front to the back, only to haul it back to the front again next Spring. Episode # 18 - Life Imitating the Garden, Gardening with Friends and Friendship
There was a conversation on the tongue of a few folks about the transparency Mrs. Michelle Obama. She shared on her new podcast feelings of being a bit low. Some would call it depression. To see all of your hard work for good disappear before your eyes. I would be devastated. To take off the cape that many women wear is admirable. It is OK to not be okay...ask for help if needed. I personally admire her ease in being transparent and welcome it in the world we live in today. Would any of us freely admit we were a bit depressed if asked? Probably not. I wrote an open letter to Mrs. Obama, sharing how the garden imitates life. Sometimes gardening conversations help us figure things out. Especially when you garden with friends. Here is a link to my blog post: Life Imitates the Garden - Cheer Up Mrs. Obama
Speaking of gardening with friends, Peggy Riccio is my collaborative partner on Gardens 'n Plants. We talk about gardens, plants and more. Peggy is truly a friend and a quiet force to be reckoned with. Allow me to introduce you to Peggy Riccio, Owner PegPlant and the other part of Gardens n' Plants.

Episode 15 - The garden in the morning, Mrs. Know It All and Mary Oliver
Throwback Thursday reminded me of a book that is no longer available in hard copy (but worth finding in a used book store). Eat Your Roses by Denise Schreiber is a kitchen keeper. Utilizing the things we grow in the garden which we might not consider eating, Denise offers us simple recipes in a small wrapper. St. Lynne's Press puts the best information in small books with some pretty cool authors as well. While this book is no longer in print, it is available as an ebook from Amazon. You can purchase it here.
I call Denise Schreiber a friend, a dear friend at that. We had chat recently filled with laughter and chocked full of information. Please enjoy this conversation from this woman who has had a career in horticulture, is a terrific speaker, instructor, garden communicator, and most importantly, a sincere friend.
Another book that is a necessity on my shelves is anything from Mary Oliver. Why I Wake Early by Mary Oliver has won many awards. I encourage you to read and connect with the earth via her words. You can purchase any of her books on Amazon by clicking here

Episode 14 - Meditative Gardening, C. Colston Burrell and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The Meditative Gardener - Cultivating Mindfulness of Body, Feelings, and Mind by Cheryl Wilfong it's a must-read for those who are considering mindfully gardening. What a wonderful guide book to look at engaging with the earth in a unique way. I share my thoughts on this book here.
It was a pleasure to chat with C. Colston Burrell. In my world, I have known him for quite a while. I heard him speak when I lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia..and hung on his every word. When you hear words that mirror how you feel about the earth, you know you have found a kindred spirit. I reached out to him 15+ years later and after our initial chat, I knew my instincts were correct. He is a man of the earth and I am glad to know him. This is a man, I consider a friend. Enjoy a wonderful chat with C. Colston Burrell (I am the self-appointed Maryland C.C.

Episode 13 - Hands In The Dirt Recap, Preston Montague and Thoughts on Gardening...
In honor of Juneteenth, I hosted a horticultural conversation with a few friends. I want to say Thank you to Abra Lee, Wambui Ipollito, Duron Chavis, Eve Rickenbaker, and a special Thank You to Preston Montague. Sometimes, I play it safe, as I choose to not disturb the waters. Preston recognized my hesitation as he encouraged me to speak my mind, have my say, and uplift my voice as an African American. It was certainly an enlightening discussion...and we did not solve this problem by any means. The conversation continues and will for some time.
If you are involved as an entity in Horticulture, give us a chance, extend that opportunity, help us elevate our unheard voice. We do bring diversity and another perspective to the table...in more ways than one!
Thank you to those who listened and once again Thank you to my panelists!
Preston Montague and I have been virtual friends for quite some time with the assistance of technology. I had no idea that he such a wonderful spirit, a beautiful drawl, and that his compassion is cautiously worn on his sleeve. Once he started speaking his truth, it was hard to end our conversation. With friends like these, I like to say...we will be chatting again! Listen to our conversation...it was a blast!

Episode 11 - Secret Gardens in East Anglia, Kew - Wakehurst and Connecting with Nature
I decided to stop being selfish and share my review of Secret Gardens of East Anglia by Barbara Segall. During this period of unintentional pausing, I had time to focus on my dreams of visiting more English gardens. I cannot wait until we are free to travel safely again. Barbara Segall is a fellow GardenComm member and has written several books. I had the pleasure of chatting with her when we both attended the Garden Bloggers Fling in Texas. While there was simply not enough time to catch up with her last year when I went to England, hopefully, we can do so in the future. Pour a cup of tea and read about a few fabulous gardens. Click here to read my review.
For those that know me, you know The Virtual Chelsea FlowerShow captured my attention. I love the diversity of the English garden and all that it has to offer. My trip to England last year was brief and I can't wait to return. Tops on my list was a visit to the RBG Kew Gardens - London, the Physic Garden and more. With so many places to visit in England, a new place is on my list. The RBG Kew Gardens - Wakehurst. Did you know Kew has several locations?? Allow me to introduce someone who I can call a friend - Ed Ikin, Deputy Director, Head of Landscape, Horticulture, and Research at RBG KEW, Wakehurst. What a delightful conversation we shared over a cup of tea. I look forward to visiting RBG Kew- Wakehurst in the future.

Episode 10 - A Lifelong Journey in Gardening and Gardening Smart!
#gardeningwhileaging is easier than ever with this wonderful book by Toni Gattone, The Lifelong Gardener - Garden With Ease & Joy At Any Age is a wonderful book written by Toni Gattonne ad published by Timber Press. Perfect for gifting or for use as a reference book to help us continue to enjoy gardening wisely as we age or have disabilities. Check out the book review on my blog. Simply click the link above.
This book offered so much content and advice, I just had to speak with Toni personally to find out what inspired her to write such a useful book. Like me, Toni is a member of GardenComm. As a garden communicator, she offered quite a few tales of how she still finds joy in her garden as she ages. Hailing from the Chicago area and now living on the West Coast, our time spent was simply delightful. You can find out more about Toni here.

Let's celebrate Women In Horticulture by watching GROW! with Katie Dubow on Facebook Live!, 1:00 pm EST, Monday - Friday. Katie is a Region II GardenComm member and has curated the perfect early afternoon delight for the gardener. Take a few moments to listen and be surprised...just don't answer BOTH to her questions!! As GROW! with Katie celebrated Women in Horticulture week, the first guest was Jennifer Jewell, friend, and author, of THE EARTH IN HER HANDS - 75 Extraordinary Women Working In The World of Plants. This book should be required reading for anyone who desires to work in the world of horticulture. Honest and informative interviews that empower the spirit and refreshes the soul.
I spoke with Barbara Wheeler, Operations Manager at the Dunedin Botanic Gardens in New Zealand. I can certainly say that I have made a new friend. Barbara shared her perspective on America, Survival, Resilience, Public Gardens, and more. She is a thirty-year traveler focusing on all things pertaining to the garden and is passionate about her profession. As a LongwoodFellow, Barbara has a lot to share...Enjoy my conversation with Barbara Wheeler.

Episode #8 - Garden, Life Balance and Mini Meadows with Mike Lizotte
Thanks for listening and sharing this podcast. my latest blog post titled, " Plants Mimic Society" just might get you thinking about what kind of plant you would be in this garden of life. Here is the link: https://cottageinthecourt.com/?p=7978
My guest, Mike Lizotte, is a very generous, engaging, and wonderful guy. I met him at a Garden Writers Conference a few years back and his enthusiasm is amazing. His book, Mini Meadows - Grow a Little Patch of Colorful Flowers Anywhere around Your Yard, published by Storey books, is a terrific book to have on hand. It will inspire you to follow his well-written directions and start a mini meadow of your own! You can explore more about Mike, The Seedman, and his book by clicking the link above.
