S3E19 - How I crossed the $200k salary mark + A chat with Ayanna Dutton

On this episode, we talk about CASH MONEY! I share how I doubled my corporate salary, twice. The path to a multiple six-figure salary was straightforward. You must start with identifying how much money you want to make and which role pays at that level. Then, you make strategic moves to land that role. I share those moves on the episode.

I also interviewed Ayanna Dutton. Ayanna is a senior marketing manager at Linkedin and the co-founder of the Non-Corporate Girls podcast. She shares all kinds of gems about navigating corporate spaces, personal branding, starting a podcast and being the “only one” in the room.

Ayanna is a panelist at my upcoming event, the Emerging LeadHER Summit. I've invited your favorite career and leadership coaches, brand experts, entrepreneurs and a special keynote speaker to speak at the Emerging LeadHER Summit on Sept 30 in NYC. At the summit, we'll teach you how to craft a lucrative leadership brand and how to leverage that brand to increase your earning potential. This year’s keynote speaker is RHOP’s Dr. Wendy Osefo!

S3E17 - 5 Lessons Learned from Renaissance for HR LeadHER's

I FINALLY got to experience Renaissance and all I can say is WOW. Beyonce is such an incredible artist and performer and the show was a clear call to action for ALL of us to be independent, fierce and phenomenal advocates.

On this live, I share 5 lessons learned for HR LeadHER's from the Beyonce experience. One key takeaway for us in HR leadership is we must be visionaries. It’s easy to get consumed with the status quo and “toxic positivity.” In order to see the change we seek, we must be the brave, informed leaders that step out and go against the grain.

Queen Bey stands on the shoulders of incredible performers that have preceded her, and she is an exceptional artist in her own right. She’s NOTHING like other popular artists today and she embraces her feminine, Southern, beautiful aesthetic. I love that and that’s why so many people can relate to her and her artistry.

As leaders, we must stand firm on our authentic leadership brand. We must also surround ourselves with others that will support our dreams and goals.

I have an incredible resource to help you meet other like-minded, ambitious women in HR leadership. The Emerging LeadHER Summit is a career and income development for HR practitioners. I've invited your brand experts and your favorite career coaches to speak teach you how to craft your own authentic leadership brand AND how to leverage that brand to increase your earning potential. This year’s keynote speaker is RHOP’s Dr. Wendy Osefo!

S3E15 - 3 skills executive recruiters want to see on your Linkedin profile

***Apologies for the static noise - the devil tried to get me on this livestream but I pushed through!

On this episode, I breakdown how to connect with the right kind of recruiters without speaking to a bunch of duds. I don’t want you wasting your time chatting about opportunities that are for someone less qualified and that will pay you less than you deserve.

You may find yourself receiving Linkedin messages from recruiters that are sourcing for entry-level positions. You receive a ton of messages for these kinds of roles but the executive-level recruiters are nowhere to be found. This happens when your Linkedin reads like a generic, HR “generalist” profile. To attract the higher level positions, you need to optimize your profile.

I share three pieces of information you need on your profile. Would you add anything else to my list?

Hit me up on Linkedin and let me know!

S3E14 - The secret to getting HR exec jobs, without the stress of job searching

Breaking into the c-suite is possible for you. Your ascension to the c-suite can be a seamless transition, for the right opportunity, at the right time. Unfortunately, Black women (and women in general) have been barred from holding these seats. We’ve made some progress over the last few decades but the statistics are still troublesome. And with the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action, I’m afraid we’ll lose that traction.

That means we have to make our candidacy even more compelling. On this episode, I share the exact method that has landed my clients director+ jobs, with their desired compensation. We also talk about the stats shared in Women in the Workplace study by McKinsey and LeanIn.Org.

Real People Leadership with Amber Hall

Real People Leadership with Amber Hall

On this episode, Amber Hall and I talk about her transition from being an independent contributor to a leadership position. Amber is a leader in product development and management, in the plumbing industry, at a global organization. Our conversation is so so good and full of so many gems. I love the transparency around her ascension.

Moving up within a global company is a really proud, empowering moment. It’s also a huge responsibility. Going from doing highly technical work, as a senior, well-trained professional to managing a team, their feelings, your manager, and their feelings - it is an experience!

Amber shares HOW she quickly advanced within the organization and benefitted from skip-level meetings (when you meet with your manager’s supervisors) and relationships. She talks about having support from a :personal board of directors" composed of a variety of people. We also talk about some of the challenges around managing people. And we get all the way real with those challenges! We share how we’ve learned how to navigate the unique challenges Black women face when our authority is implicitly and explicitly challenged in the workplace.

Even though Amber and I do totally different work in totally different industries, I resonated a lot with her experience. Experiencing and overcoming those unspoken truths can be enlightening, exciting and empowering, and they can also be challenging and overwhelming.

You can connect with Amber here, on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/amberlh/

S3E9: Why HR Leaders must be selfish to succeed

S3E9: Why HR Leaders must be selfish to succeed

HR leaders, time for you to be more selfish! By being selfish, I don’t mean being a detriment to others. I mean you need to be more intentional about taking care of yourself, your well-being and your mental health. Being more selfish has made me a much better leader and HR practitioner. Part of that is shifting my mindset. Another part is silencing the imposter syndrome voice that tell me I need to be a people pleaser. A huge part of taking care of myself is having healthy boundaries with my work.

Maintaining practical boundaries has helped me a ton. Here a few I recommend for other HR professionals:

1. End your work day at a specific time and actually stopping work. In hybrid work land, it’s easy to keep working and get things done after 5p. That doesn’t work for me. Stopping work at a decent hour helps me come down from the intensity of work and preserve some of my emotional energy for my partner and loved ones.

2. Scheduling my day with intention, and avoiding filling my calendar with back-to-back meetings every day.

3. Spending time on projects that make you excited. As I tell my clients, I want you to spend time working in your personal mission and passion. As leaders within an organization, we must carve prioritize these passion projects and make them a regular part of our routine.

On this episode, I also share that I’m going house shopping this weekend! Yessssss! I am breaking generational curses and changing the trajectory for me and my offspring. I’m nervous to *Usher voice* sign these papers! But we’re doing it anyways. After you listen to the episode, hit me up on Linkedin and let me know how you are going to be more selfish in your life.

S3E7 - Vulnerable Chat - Dealing with Fibroids

On this episode, I open up about an issue that has caused all kinds of problems in my life for the last few years. I’ve been dealing with fibroids since my diagnosis in October 2019.

Disclaimer - if you are uncomfortable talking about terms such as fibroids, cycle and uterus, you should skip this episode. Also, I am not a medical professional. I am sharing my personal experience.

Recently, I had major surgery to have fibroids removed. As someone who works a lot, the idea of taking off for several days and “taking it easy” for several weeks was a challenge for me. But I forced myself to do it. For me to be my absolute best self as a partner, individual and leader, I have to take care of myself. I have to be present in every situation.

I am grateful that I had the space to take the time, and I’m happy I can share my experience with others, especially folks with similar struggles.

I’d love to hear what you think about the episode. Most times, you can find me on Linkedin, but my DM’s are open on IG too. Hit me up.

Below are the links I reference during the episode

S3E5 - How do HR leaders create “inclusive culture”

S3E5 - How do HR leaders create “inclusive culture”

This episode is for HR leaders that want to set bold goals for 2023. I talk about how I want to make a positive impact by disrupting the status quo in corporate america. I want to reposition conversations around culture and actually create spaces where marginalized people feel like they belong and they can thrive. This is a huge task. But we must be the change we wish to see in the world, and I’m doing my part as a HR/DEI leader.

My rose for this week is all about positivity and amazing-ness in my circle of friends. I celebrated my best friend’s birthday in Atlanta this past weekend, and we indulged at the cutest, Black-owned wellness space. Check it out if you’re in the ATL area. It’s a lovely space for a bachelorette party!

This week, I’m reading Bet on Black by the incredible Eboni K. Williams. This call to action to Black folks is something we all need to consider in our daily lives. I’m a couple chapters in and I’m loving it.

Ep. 41 - 3 Signs that You're Ready to Level-up in HR

Being an HR Generalist is a great way to touch on all the different pieces of human resources. You can be in a generalist role for years and continue honing your skills and learning new things. After a few years of doing this, you may want more. More responsibility, more authority, new, more nuanced challenges.

If you’re feeling unfulfilled in your HR generalist role, and you have years of generalist experience, how about considering a role in #HRLeadership ?

In this episode, I share 3 signs that you’re ready to make the transition.

Ep. 39 - Get a HR Leadership job with these 3 strategies

As you listen to this episode, consider this affirmation:

“I am worthy and deserving of an HR leadership position that pays me over six figures.”

Now, do you believe that?

Honestly, it took me a while to receive and believe this. For a long time, I was settling. I settled for opportunities that felt comfortable and “safe.” The truth is, you can’t afford to get complacent in our career because your earning potential and skills will suffer.

I had to learn how to be confident in my unique strengths and experience. Now, I can confidently communicate my value. I attract six-figure opportunities regularly, and I teach my clients how to do the same thing.

On this episode, we discuss how to make this shift, as well as other practical strategies that HR generalists can employ to land HR leadership jobs.

Ep. 38 - This is how to recruit your next CHRO

Ep. 38 - This is how to recruit your next CHRO

Why is it so hard to recruit strong HR leadership?

The simple answer is - you’re not attracting top talent. Something about your company is not competitive, and for capable HR leaders, this is extremely important, especially now.

The challenges you’re facing around
- Building culture in an hybrid environment
- Responding to a workforce that’s struggling with burnout
- Retaining talent in the ongoing
#greatresignation

Those challenges are not unique to you - leaders are leaning on their Head of People to figure out creative solutions. In return, HR leaders want to have a seat at the table and to be part of business strategy.

In this episode, I explain why it's difficult to hire HR leaders in today's market. I also provide tips on how to overcome those challenges and expedite the search, while enhancing your employer brand.

I help employers develop recruitment strategies to attract and retain diverse leadership. If you need help with this, I'm happy to chat. Sign-up for a complimentary consultation at bit.ly/hiringbycourtney

You can also sign-up to participate in the Emerging LeadHER Summit job fair. This is a great opportunity to meeting potential CHRO's and HR leaders. We can discuss this opportunity during the consultation. You're also welcome to contact me at info@thecourtneyball.com.

Before I cross the 6-figure mark, I didn’t think I was qualified to hold a “director” title. Everyone at that level had 15+ years of experience and none of them looked like me.

Then, something changed. On this episode, I talk about how I made that shift. I'm sharing because I want you to know that it's possible for you too.

Once I shifted my approach, I learned that I had the ability to fast-track my advancement. I could make myself indispensable by aligning my success with the company’s objectives.

In other words, I learned how to communicate how my work makes my employer more successful, more profitable, more efficient. Plus, I do it with a friendly yet assertive demeanor. That’s my leadership brand.

In honor of Women’s History Month, this month’s episodes are all about relationship building, more specifically, #womensupportingwomen

Ep. 24: 3 Favorite Apps for Better Productivity

Ep. 24: 3 Favorite Apps for Better Productivity

Honesty moment - I’m not even sure how I balance being an HR executive, entrepreneur, coach, author, podcast host, partner, sister and aunt. All of these roles require me to show up, in all my powerful #QueenEnergy.

At any given point, I’m lacking in one of those areas because no one is perfect. But your girl is definitely productive!

Day by day, task by task, moment by moment, I show up as my best self.

On this episode, I share what apps I use to keep me productive. I’ve never been someone that can stick to the same schedule every day, but these apps help me create habits. These habits have helped me be successful in many hats I wear.

In my “Run the C-Suite’ mentorship program, I teach my clients how to do this in a way that is authentic and effective. The mentorship program is for you if you are ready to attract 6-figure career opportunities and finally step out of your comfort zone. To apply to the Run the C-Suite program, you start with a consultation. During the consultation, we will discuss your goals for the 6 months and create a plan to achieve them. I’ll share information about my program and you can decide if it is a good fit for you. Apply at bit.ly/coachingbycourtney

Ep. 19 - 3 Ways to Increase Your Salary in 2022

Ep. 19 - 3 Ways to Increase Your Salary in 2022

This episode is for you if you're overworked and well-liked but getting paid pennies on the dollar! No, not literal pennies. I mean, if you’re getting paid $75,000 a year, and the local market says that most people, doing the same level of work, are typically paid $110,000. That’s a huge gap!

But how do you get in this situation?

Blame your employer. They love all of the work we do, the energy we bring, but they seem to have difficulty paying Black women the same as our peers… Le sigh.

Then, take a look in the mirror. Have you been advocating for yourself? Showcasing your unique expertise so you can attract six-figure opportunities? Or did you settle for this salary because you had to escape your last job...?

On this episode, I share advice about positioning your unique strengths to get your own money and start building wealth in our community.

My mentorship program is open for enrollment. In this program, I teach clients how to obtain 6-figure leadership jobs. This program is for you if you are ready to step out of your comfort zone and share your leadership brand. To apply to the program, you start with a consultation. Ep. 17 - I learned how to leave past trauma behind, and break glass ceilings

Ep. 17 - I learned how to leave past trauma behind, and break glass ceilings

As a first-generation college grad, masters degree holder and corporate executive, I have to navigated unchartered territory many times. Honestly, it has been scary and challenging. On this episode, I talk about the tough decisions I've had to make to survive on my own, living New York City.

In my 20's, I carried a lot of burdens from my past, growing up in a poor neighborhood, losing my mom at 18, being fired unexpectedly. These experiences turned into insecurity. Insecurity blocked me from even imagining I could make $100k+.

Then, I had a life-changing moment where God spoke to me. God told me that I deserve better. On that day, I received the vision and started working on myself. I improved my physical and emotional health. Then, everything started falling into place in my career. I started making closer to $200k in my corporate career and received a new job title.

Maybe you resonate with this also. I hope me sharing my journey helps you persevere beyond the insecurity that holds soooooo many of us back. The trauma you've endured is NOTHING to be ashamed of, Queen. Instead of holding it all in, surround yourself with a community of compassionate people that will pour into you. I create this kind of community in my coaching programs and online groups.

In the comments below, drop the job title you're claiming in 2022. Let's make it happen.
