Caroline Orr-Bueno is a researcher in cognitive security and in this episode we discuss the pandemic, the experience of Long COVID, and some of the misinformation that is currently out there. More awareness of the symptoms of long COVID still need to be addressed in the medical community and we hope that this episode increases this awareness.

In this interview, we learn about the types of disinformation and created pseudoscience being heard and followed by some populations in Latin America. In particular we speak to Leah Varjacques of VICE News about her documentary work in Argentina and Bolivia and the rumors that are heard and believed about COVID vaccines. Although in some countries things have reopened and people feel ready to live in a post-COVID society, unfortuntately this is not yet the case. In Latin America we are seeing COVID hotspots from a global perspective and the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic is clearly emerging. Professor Pamela P. Martinez, Assistant Professor of Microbiology of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign shares her recent findings on socioeconomic disparities and lives impacted by COVID-19 in Santiago, Chile. Abstract from Dr. Martinez's recent publication: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected cities particularly hard. Here, we provide an in-depth characterization of disease incidence and mortality and their dependence on demographic and socioeconomic strata in Santiago, a highly segregated city and the capital of Chile. Our analyses show a strong association between socioeconomic status and both COVID-19 outcomes and public health capacity. People living in municipalities with low socioeconomic status did not reduce their mobility during lockdowns as much as those in more affluent municipalities. Testing volumes may have been insufficient early in the pandemic in those places, and both test positivity rates and testing delays were much higher. We find a strong association between socioeconomic status and mortality, measured by either COVID-19-attributed deaths or excess deaths. Finally, we show that infection fatality rates in young people are higher in low-income municipalities. What exactly is contact tracing and why are people talking about it so much? How does this process help to improve public health? In this episode we speak to Gabriela Calvi, a public health professional tasked with contact tracing for the Spanish speaking population at her county agency in Texas. What does COVID-19 economic recovery look like when considering the health and status of women?  The State of Hawai’i took quick action to provide an answer to this with respect to income inequality and economic security for women and their families, and developed the nation's first feminist economic plan for COVID-19 response. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak to an educator living in Gallup, McKinley County, New Mexico during this pandemic. We hear about the  pandemic spread and its severity disproportionately affecting Native American populations in the region, despite the proactive efforts of state level policy. We also learn about some of the multicultural history and background of the region, in addition to some of its additional challenges of air quality, education and other economic risks adding to the challenges of the pandemic. We had the chance to speak to an international family visiting Thailand for an unexpected extended vacation as the pandemic began, the process of safety protocols on the return to China, and the proactive perspectives of time with family, exercise, and time for kids to connect with friends and classmates online.

Welcome to  the introductory episode of COVID-19 PPC (Public Health, Policy, and Culture).   As of late March 2020, several countries and several states in the United States are on stay-at-home orders. Many of us are now technically in social or spatial isolation as each location works on containing the virus and getting past a peak in infections, to control and bring down these numbers. Many of us are seeking real-life information about the daily impacts and effects of this pandemic in daily life, and desire hearing real stories that don’t make the news. We seek to learn and hear from other countries living through this historic time, and to hear what we can learn from each other. In this environment, the COVID-19 PPC podcast was born. Public Health: Thanks to this pandemic, many people will understand the importance of public health as a discipline. We provide some insights into the world of public health and how researchers and practitioners work to serve the health of the public. Policy: We discuss the role of the World Health Organization, federal government, state and local public agencies in controlling the spread of this virus.
