Brett Coleman is a passionate 7-year official from Livingston, New Jersey who's been a part of Crown Refs Mentor since March 2021. His goal is to make Division 1 and possibly beyond. The NFHS just the released the Points of Emphasis for the 2022-23 basketball season with the main focus centered around Sportsmanship and respect for the game.  Now more than ever officials have the leverage and support to call the rules as written and not allow verbal abuse towards officials or disrespectful behavior amongst opponents. Corey Powell is an active division 3 basketball player and a 3-year official from Long Island. Jośe Carrion is a Puerto Rican legend who's officiated in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league for the past 32 years, including the 2022 Finals. During his amazing career as a referee, he's worked in 3 Olympic games including 2004, 2008, and 2012, and has also been an NCAA-M Division 1 official since 2002. Dee Kantner is one of the greatest basketball officials of all time on any level. Some of her amazing accomplishments include 25 NCAA Final Fours and 14 National title games.⁣ ⁣ She just completed her 33rd season at the Division 1 level while showing no signs of slowing down by working the 2022 NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, MN.⁣ ⁣ To go along with her legendary college career, Dee and Violet Palmer also held the distinction of being the first female officials to work in a men’s professional sports league.⁣ ⁣ Dee spent 5 years officiating in the NBA from 1997-2002 and also worked as the WNBA Supervisor of Officials. In 2002, she made her return to the NCAA Women’s game and hasn't looked back since. She's continued to #servethegame and pay it forward by sharing her knowledge and helping to develop and inspire a generation of basketball officials.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we discuss how to avoid bad partnering, not letting your ego get in the way, and Dee breaks down the O.I.L. strategy as an effective way to process situations more clearly.⁣ ⁣ We also discuss several more topics like why coaches are not your friends, how to recover from disappointment, things to stop saying about coaches, and the correlation between over-selling and incorrect calls.⁣

This episode is the 8th installment of our Rapid Response series, which is designed to help arm your tool belt with ready and effective responses for ANYTHING a coach throws at you.  In this session, we hit on some powerful themes like:⁣ ⁣ 𝟭. It's more important to establish respectful communication guidelines than it is to provide a good explanation about a play.⁣ ⁣ 𝟮. Hence, be sure to prioritize the most important topics during your conversations (ex. if they're screaming about a block/charge play, we need to address the scream before the block/charge)⁣ ⁣ 𝟯. The Power of Complimenting the coach when they are speaking respectful is a great way to stroke their ego while indirectly setting professional expectations⁣ ⁣ 𝟰. The Power of Complimenting your partner over a call while you're near the coach's bench is a way of showing unity while providing assurance and reinforcement that the call was correct⁣ ⁣ 𝟱. Officials need to get out of their comfort zone and realize that if the coach is yelling at any member of the CREW, then they are yelling at YOU. ⁣ ⁣ 𝟲. Many officials will not address the coach unless they are speaking directly to them.  Being a great partner can be uncomfortable sometimes but having your teammates back through thick and thin is always the right thing to do.⁣ ⁣ 𝟳. It's imperative that the table side official act as a de-escalator if the coach is shouting across the court.  Many times, the closest official to the bench can play a pivotal role in properly managing the coach's behavior⁣ ⁣ We touch on all of these topics and much more on during this 100-minute communication session. Gilbert Arenas was a prolific offensive player during his 12-year NBA career playing for a total of 4 teams. He was the 2003 NBA’s most improved player and averaged over 20 ppg and 5 assists including over 29 ppg in 2006. He joins the CR podcast to talk about some common things that players dislike about officials and what's eating at him about NBA referees. The Real Coach D, Phil Diasparra, is back for his 3rd installment as he gives us 7 Qualities of a Great Official. We hope you enjoy! Integrity – great officials are the guardians of honesty in athletics. He must maintain a complete absence of bias. An official holds the position in the world of sports not unlike a judge in a court of law. If you aspire to be a great official you never put yourself in a position where your integrity could be questioned. The integrity of the game must always be upheld.⁣ Hustle- Officiating is a game of angles and positioning, officiating hustle describes movement and court position. There is no connection to speed and meaningless motion. Every great official moves efficiently to be in the right place at the right time. It’s the only way to see the entire play and make the correct call.⁣ Judgment- Great judgment is a byproduct of effort and experience. It goes beyond the rule book and includes an almost instinctive ability to apply the critical principle of advantage/disadvantage. This is at the heart of officiating that no team or player gets an unfair advantage or is placed at an unfair disadvantage.⁣ Communication-90% of officiating is being a people person, know how to deal with people. Listening is important that’s why we have two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as we speak.⁣ Communication means “can you deal with people?” Can you deal with coaches, players during a game? Communication can be accomplished in many ways and in most cases, the situation will dictate your appropriate response. Sometimes a simple response to the question, a one-word answer, or a look can communicate what is needed at a particular time. Saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can help one avoid potential problems in a game. Communication is also the knowledge of when it’s best not to say anything.⁣ Consistency- Young officials have more difficulty with consistency than any other quality, mainly because they lack the experience to realize when their decisions are inconsistent. Everyone has some difficulty in this regard, but the great officials are unrelenting in their judgment. They see and call a game better than their colleagues. The key is to make the same call on the same kind of play whether it’s the first minute of the game or the score is tied with one minute left to play. If they believe an official is consistent, coaches and players will adjust accordingly. Inconsistent decisions on similar plays trigger negative behavior and poor sportsmanship among players and invite criticism from coaches. If you try and fail it’s a mistake, if you repeat the mistake it’s a decision.⁣ Confidence- There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of the situation, personalities involved, pressures from the crowd, or possible repercussions, great officials place fairness above all other concerns. They act confidently and according to the dictates of that value. You should hold yourself to a Higher than normal ethical standard. Be a legacy leader.⁣ Common Sense - I’ve saved this one for last. Of the qualities listed, common sense is the most important. That which is fair and right must take precedence throughout each game. Common sense ensures that fairness, understanding, and the best interests of the game are foremost in the mind of a great official. It's a pleasure to welcome former Olympic official Scott Butler, who had a 22-year professional career in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL), working over 500 games including 12 consecutive grand finals series. ⁣ ⁣ His FIBA career dates back to 1997 as he’s officiated multiple World Cups (’06, ‘10) and 2 Olympic games (Athens ‘04, Beijing ‘08). Scott retired from officiating due to a knee injury in 2011 and is currently the Head of Referees for the NBL. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we recall some of Scott’s classic FIBA games from the mid-2000s in an era that featured some highly competitive teams for the U.S. including Argentina, Spain, Greece, & more. Will Fried, is entering his 6th-year officiating originally from Bethesda, MD, and currently residing in Hays, Kansas.  He comes to Crown Refs MENTOR with the intentions of growing his officiating skills and becoming part of a supportive community of officials who all route for each other. ⁣ ⁣ Will is looking to improve his confidence, game management skills, mechanics & signals, as well as adding more patience and whistle discipline. ⁣ In this episode, we get to learn more about Will and the obstacles he's had to overcome being an official on the autism spectrum.  ⁣ ⁣ He also shares with us which aspects of the game are most challenging to him including communicating the right phrases to coaches and managing the wide range of personalities throughout the game. ⁣ ⁣ We also talked about not letting bad partners affect us, the improvement of his recall, and tuning his mechanics even better through our group signal school.

𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙊𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜” 𝙛𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙞𝙖 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙠𝙖.⁣ ⁣ Maia recently made national headlines by becoming the second female official hired into the NFL. But her rise to the top did not happen overnight as she steadily grinder her way for 15 years to get to this point.⁣ ⁣ She worked 3 years as a high school official before catapulting directly into the NCAA Division 1 ranks where she spent 10 years honing her craft at the collegiate level. ⁣ ⁣ She was also a part of the NFL developmental training program for 7 years receiving guidance on the differences between pro vs. college rules and being mentored by some of the NFL’s best teachers. ⁣ ⁣ Her breakthrough as a football official happened when she became a certified basketball official learning from NBA legends Leroy Richardson and Tony Brothers. This mentorship and introduction to a new set of rules gave her added toughness and swagger that she didn't know existed within her. She would rise to also become a Division 1 basketball official in the MEAC conference.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, Maia goes into detail about what she loves about officiating, how to overcome mistakes, and what the impact of this moment means to her. ⁣ ⁣ She also elaborates on the positive influence of her mentors, how to block out negative voices, and advice for officials who are frustrated with their careers.

She’s also officiating in 15 Division 1 conferences including: BIG 10, SEC, ACC, BIG 12, CUSA, BIG EAST, AMERICAN, SUN BELT, A10, CAA, MAAC, PATRIOT, AMERICA EAST, IVY, & NEC.  ⁣ ⁣ Some of the officials who inspired her were Dee Kantner, Joey Crawford, Tina Napier, Laura Morris, Rachelle Jones, Gina Cross, Felicia Grinter, Beverly Roberts, Maj Forsberg, & Brian Garland. Natasha is determined to grow the Women's game in all forms through media, exposure, stories, quality officials.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, Natasha gives us tactical advice on how to overcome setbacks and turn your failures into learnings. She posts historic postseason stats that most coaches and even universities will never match. ⁣ ⁣ Lisa took 21 trips to the NCAA tournament including a remarkable 18 Final Fours and 10 NCAA Women’s Championship games. She also was a part of the WNBA’s inaugural season and officiated multiple league finals during her 10-year pro career. ⁣ ⁣ She retired after the 2018 Final Four and was immediately hired as Coordinator of Officials for the SEC, Atlantic Sun, Ohio valley, and more. Brady Stiff and Kelsey Loughlin are longtime friends who finally decided to record their conversations about sports and everything else and host a podcast called “...And we’re back” available on Spotify/Apple podcasts.⁣ ⁣ They recently had me as a guest on their podcast to talk about my experience with officiating, provide some tips for new officials, dispel some myths about sports officials, and talk about how Crown Refs was built from the bottom up.

In this episode of 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 ⁣ we discuss more game management strategies for complaining coaches and how and when you can take advantage of offensive opportunities. ⁣ ⁣ We conclude that officials have historically let coaches get away with too many antics on the sidelines and the lack of sportsmanship has been naturally embedded into the game itself. We also cover unsportsmanlike conduct and the criteria involving bench technicals. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, we are the guardians of the game so what we permit-we promote.⁣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁, You are backed up by the rulebook.

𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙮 put together one of the most outstanding NCAA officiating careers of all-time both on and off the court. His Division 1 career spans over 30 years in the ACC/Big East/SEC conferences including 26 NCAA tournaments, 12 Final Fours, and 4 National Championship games. ⁣ ⁣ He was the 1989 Naismith Official of the Year and inducted into the sports hall of fame in two states PA/NC.⁣ He also served as Coordinator of Officials in the ACC/Colonial/A10 from 2005-2015.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we discuss two of John’s most memorable assignments, the iconic 1991 Final Four game between UNLV vs. DUKE, and the 1996 National Championship game between Syracuse vs Kentucky.
