#312 Camp clips 11 | Chatting w/Darius Mcghee | Liberty U. Legend

The 11th installment of our Camp Clips series, we hear about one of the best parts about the crown refs community. Paul explains to Liberty basketball player Darius McGhee about offensive initiated contact. Also, a snippet from Rashaad Murphy a retired US Air Force and a devoted father of 5 and Porsha Waddey showing great humility and transparency by listing some of the things she wants to improve on. More postgame feedback, strengthening the chop, different ways to show game awareness, and what is the correct sequence of signals for a 3pt make and 1. discuss and 1 mechanics also when a coach tries to put us in a box by saying "the same exact play happened on that end and you didn't call it", quickly respond with "some plays can be similar but never the same". very rarely will you see two of the exact same plays in a game so don't allow that language into the convo. Refereestore.com

In one of the most productive signal schools yet, the Crown Refs Mentor Community puts in a ton of great mirror work practicing a whole list of common signals. We had over 10 officials working in unison so we hope you can pick up a lot of pointers both from their presentations and from the coaching that's being provided. There was a lot of individualized instruction for each official as well as big picture themes for the group to collectively benefit from.โฃ โฃ Special thanks to Carmela Garcia, Nikki Vance, Taylor Hamm, Porsha Waddey, Jay Smith, Jason Hayes, David Stefaniak, Connor Schoenfeld, and Tyler McCabe. Refereestore.com

In the 9th installment of our Camp Clips series, we explain the "ball before body/body before ball" concept and the benefits of utilizing the "hit to the head" signal. We cover a very useful strategy using the feet/foul/floor/flop concept which acts as a checklist for officials to more thoroughly officiate jump shot plays. We discuss the use of unapproved "hit to the head" signal for NFHS games and having patience on the held ball plays to give players a chance to out muscle their opponent. This was a recent presentation for Sara Woods and the great people from the Big Game Officials Camp in St. Louis. We covered 4 key traits that can lead to happiness on and off the court: Perspective, Positivity, Passion & Patience. Having a healthy perspective that is grounded in gratitude will give you the emotional stability to purely appreciate every day as the blessing that it is. Leading with Positivity and optimism as your centerpiece is a winning formula for success. Having an unwavering positive attitude is a superpower that can lead to so many other wonderful things in your life. If you are passionate about something, that can be the fuel and the driving force that propels you to get to the next level. Passion produces effort. Consistent effort produces results. Maybe the most important and difficult trait is patience. Itโ€™s no coincidence that learning patience takes a very long time. However, patience prevents pain, and frustration, and can lead to higher levels of peace and happiness. We know this episode will be an UNLOCK and will help at least 1 person. We hope this person is YOU!

Some of her amazing accomplishments include 25 NCAA Final Fours and 14 National title games. She just completed her 33rd season at the Division 1 level while showing no signs of slowing down by working the 2022 NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, MN. To go along with her legendary college career, Dee and Violet Palmer also held the distinction of being the first female officials to work in a menโ€™s professional sports league. Dee spent 5 years officiating in the NBA from 1997-2002 and also worked as the WNBA Supervisor of Officials. In 2002, she made her return to the NCAA Womenโ€™s game and hasn't looked back since. She's continued to #servethegame and pay it forward by sharing her knowledge and helping to develop and inspire a generation of basketball officials. In this episode, we discuss how to avoid bad partnering, not letting your ego get in the way, and Dee breaks down the O.I.L. strategy as an effective way to process situations more clearly. We also discuss several more topics like why coaches are not your friends, how to recover from disappointment, things to stop saying about coaches, and the correlation between over-selling and incorrect calls.

#261 Refs Need Love 2 | Tik Tok Live w/David Gerson

David Gerson is no stranger to being a bit outside the mainstream. His high school yearbook quote was โ€œitโ€™s better to stand alone for the right reasons, than be together for the wrong.โ€ Whether it was student government or as a team captain and president of his university Rugby team in college, he wants to stand for what is right, not necessarily what is popular. David has been a soccer referee for the past 7 years based in Atlanta, GA. He enjoys the physical and mental challenges that being an official presents on a daily and weekly basis. It is a never ending journey of learning and fitness. Most recently, he has created a brand called Refs Need Love Too that is devoted to education, community and inspiration for referees in all sports worldwide.โฃ โฃ Join our communityโฃ Patreon.com/crownrefs

#253 Rapid Responses 8 | feat. Coach Sheldon | [Full Episode available on PATREON]

#253 Rapid Responses 8 | feat. Coach Sheldon | [Full Episode available on PATREON]

This episode is the 8th installment of our Rapid Response series, which is designed to help arm your tool belt with ready and effective responses for ANYTHING a coach throws at you. ย In this session, we hit on some powerful themes like:โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿญ. It's more important to establish respectful communication guidelines than it is to provide a good explanation about a play.โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿฎ. Hence, be sure to prioritize the most important topics during your conversations (ex. if they're screaming about a block/charge play, we need to address the scream before the block/charge)โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿฏ. The Power of Complimenting the coach when they are speaking respectful is a great way to stroke their ego while indirectly setting professional expectationsโฃ โฃ ๐Ÿฐ. The Power of Complimenting your partner over a call while you're near the coach's bench is a way of showing unity while providing assurance and reinforcement that the call was correctโฃ โฃ ๐Ÿฑ. Officials need to get out of their comfort zone and realize that if the coach is yelling at any member of the CREW, then they are yelling at YOU.ย โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿฒ. Many officials will not address the coach unless they are speaking directly to them. ย Being a great partner can be uncomfortable sometimes but having your teammates back through thick and thin is always the right thing to do.โฃ โฃ ๐Ÿณ. It's imperative that the table side official act as a de-escalator if the coach is shouting across the court. ย Many times, the closest official to the bench can play a pivotal role in properly managing the coach's behaviorโฃ โฃ We touch on all of these topics and much more on during this 100-minute communication session. We hope you grow from this!

Gilbert Arenas was a prolific offensive player during his 12-year NBA career playing for a total of 4 teams. He was the 2003 NBAโ€™s most improved player and averaged over 20 ppg and 5 assists including over 29 ppg in 2006. He joins the CR podcast to talk about some common things that players dislike about officials and what's eating at him about NBA referees. Our topics include trash-talking, respect for the game, what he appreciates about officials, and what the NBA players thought of the Tim Donaghy scandal. This was a very entertaining and insightful discussion between a player and a ref as we tried to iron out some of our differences and find a common ground. Special thanks to Gilbert for his contributions to our program.

#233 Film Night 3 | Chiene Jones | Jorelle Pitter | Donald Griffin | Pedro Rodrigues

In our 3rd film session with Crown Refs Mentor, we break down one of my recent games from the 21-22 season. We discuss how and when to use our 3 different voices-Command presence, normal, diffusing. We also speak about why we talk ourselves out of upgrading fouls and why we shouldn't ignore unsportsmanlike conduct just because our partner does. Some other plays we look at involve pass/crash criteria and a monster time and distance play from Carmela Garcia.

#232 Re-Applying the Pressure | with Bill Spooner | Crown Refs Mentor

This audio is an exclusive interview with former 32-year NBA official Bill Spooner. Bill has worked over 1500 regular-season games and 100 NBA playoff games in his amazing tenure. In this episode, we spoke about having mental toughness and list specific ways that officials can re-apply the pressure back on the coaches and players. This is a concept that is foreign to most referees but is something we are leaning heavily into at Crown Refs. We thank Bill for displaying the type of grit that more officials need to embody.โฃ โฃ Other topics include Kobeโ€™s 81 performance, why we shouldn't sell, what to do when your partner calls a technical foul and the bond that he shares with his son Drew through officiating.

#231 Rapid Responses 5 | A Renewed Focus on Respect | CR MENTOR

This episode features the 5th session of our rapid response training with the Mentor group. ย We lead by covering a new memo from the NCAA regarding sportsmanship, bench decorum, calling the rules as written, and a renewed sense of respect for the game. We found this information to be a foundational tool on how we should manage the game and it also provided some new language for us to integrate into our responses to coaches and players. We also heard different members of the group share recent scenarios involving coaches, how they handled it and what they can do better. ย We hope this audio helps you add a few things to your belt.

#230 Signal School Live | Session 2 | Stay Here, Wave off, hit to head, chucking

This episode features the second installment of Signal School-Live with the Crown Refs Mentor group. In this session, we practice 4 different signals to improve our form and presentation during our games including the โ€œstay hereโ€ signal, the wave off, hit to the head and chucking. We recommend utilizing the stay here signal as a highly effective way to communicate that it's a non-shooting foul in the frontcourt (post, rebounding, cutting fouls). Thank you to all of the officials who participated in this session as it takes a high level of confidence and humility.

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3

The Real Coach D, Phil Diasparra, is back for his 3rd installment as he gives us 7 Qualities of a Great Official. We hope you enjoy! Integrity โ€“ great officials are the guardians of honesty in athletics. He must maintain a complete absence of bias. An official holds the position in the world of sports not unlike a judge in a court of law. If you aspire to be a great official you never put yourself in a position where your integrity could be questioned. The integrity of the game must always be upheld.โฃ Hustle- Officiating is a game of angles and positioning, officiating hustle describes movement and court position. There is no connection to speed and meaningless motion. Every great official moves efficiently to be in the right place at the right time. Itโ€™s the only way to see the entire play and make the correct call.โฃ Judgment- Great judgment is a byproduct of effort and experience. It goes beyond the rule book and includes an almost instinctive ability to apply the critical principle of advantage/disadvantage. This is at the heart of officiating that no team or player gets an unfair advantage or is placed at an unfair disadvantage.โฃ Communication-90% of officiating is being a people person, know how to deal with people. Listening is important thatโ€™s why we have two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as we speak.โฃ Communication means โ€œcan you deal with people?โ€ Can you deal with coaches, players during a game? Communication can be accomplished in many ways and in most cases, the situation will dictate your appropriate response. Sometimes a simple response to the question, a one-word answer, or a look can communicate what is needed at a particular time. Saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can help one avoid potential problems in a game. Communication is also the knowledge of when itโ€™s best not to say anything.โฃ Consistency- Young officials have more difficulty with consistency than any other quality, mainly because they lack the experience to realize when their decisions are inconsistent. Everyone has some difficulty in this regard, but the great officials are unrelenting in their judgment. They see and call a game better than their colleagues. The key is to make the same call on the same kind of play whether itโ€™s the first minute of the game or the score is tied with one minute left to play. If they believe an official is consistent, coaches and players will adjust accordingly. Inconsistent decisions on similar plays trigger negative behavior and poor sportsmanship among players and invite criticism from coaches. If you try and fail itโ€™s a mistake, if you repeat the mistake itโ€™s a decision.โฃ Confidence- There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of the situation, personalities involved, pressures from the crowd, or possible repercussions, great officials place fairness above all other concerns. They act confidently and according to the dictates of that value. You should hold yourself to a Higher than normal ethical standard. Be a legacy leader.โฃ Common Sense - Iโ€™ve saved this one for last. Of the qualities listed, common sense is the most important. That which is fair and right must take precedence throughout each game. Common sense ensures that fairness, understanding, and the best interests of the game are foremost in the mind of a great official. If you truly understand the spirit and intent of the rules, common sense will guide you well.โฃ To join our Patreon/Discord/Zoom community patreon.com/crownrefs

#227 Rapid Responses 4 | Dictatating the Terms of the Dialogue | w/special guest coach Arjan Perovic

In our 4th Rapid Response session, we hit on some big picture points and talk about having the right perspective before we even enter the encounter. This included the major mindset theme of not trying to convince the coach that you got the call correct or prove to them that our way of thinking is better. Too many times officials get into debates and try to sell ideas to coaches which causes us to lose the leverage by lowering down to their level. This episode also featured ways how we can control the conversation and stressed the importance and the ability to dictate the terms of the dialogue. A special thank you to Arjan Perovic for joining us to role play and bring his coach's perspective to the conversation. To join our private communityโฃ Patreon.com/crownrefs

#214 Crown Refs FIBA | feat. Scott Butler | 2-time Olympic Official | Head of Referees (NBL)

It's a pleasure to welcome former Olympic official Scott Butler, who had a 22-year professional career in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL), working over 500 games including 12 consecutive grand finals series. His FIBA career dates back to 1997 as heโ€™s officiated multiple World Cups (โ€™06, โ€˜10) and 2 Olympic games (Athens โ€˜04, Beijing โ€˜08). Scott retired from officiating due to a knee injury in 2011 and is currently the Head of Referees for the NBL. In this episode, we recall some of Scottโ€™s classic FIBA games from the mid-2000s in an era that featured some highly competitive teams for the U.S. including Argentina, Spain, Greece, & more. We talked about improving game and crew awareness, how to not let the game get behind us, and discussed some of the major differences between the professional game and international competition. Additionally, we hit on another vital and helpful theme- ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ง-๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ง-๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ.

#208 Mentor Sessions 1 | Adam Zohni | Richmond Hill, Ontario

We are excited to launch our new private community for officials and our developmental training program called Crown Refs MENTOR. Adam Zohni is a long-time supporter and passionate 5th-year official from Toronto, CN, who was one of the first officials to sign up for our MENTOR tier. ย So after a few years of exchanging messages online, we finally had the opportunity to sit down and meet for our first mentor session. In this episode, we discuss why he decided to join Crown Refs MENTOR and some of the things that he's looking to gain from being part of the new community. ย We also reviewed his referee profile, where he listed his biggest areas of growth that he's looking to improve on. His most difficult plays are calling flagrant fouls and managing unsportsmanlike technical fouls with players and coaches. ย He's focused on slowing down and being emotionless to have a greater sense of control in those hostile moments. ย We also go over some differences between FIBA and NFHS, proper time-out mechanics, and tips for calling double fouls. Special thanks to Adam, Zack, Carmela, Pedro, Ryan, Lance, Will, Ken, Aaron, Joseph, Josiah, Chris, Tony, John, William, Alice, Jon, Justin, Luke, Jason, Scott, James, Korbin, Corbin, Isaiah, and every other official who has joined us for this next chapter of Crown Refs content. ย #servethegame

But her rise to the top did not happen overnight as she steadily grinder her way for 15 years to get to this point. She worked 3 years as a high school official before catapulting directly into the NCAA Division 1 ranks where she spent 10 years honing her craft at the collegiate level. She was also a part of the NFL developmental training program for 7 years receiving guidance on the differences between pro vs. college rules and being mentored by some of the NFLโ€™s best teachers. Her breakthrough as a football official happened when she became a certified basketball official learning from NBA legends Leroy Richardson and Tony Brothers. This mentorship and introduction to a new set of rules gave her added toughness and swagger that she didn't know existed within her. She would rise to also become a Division 1 basketball official in the MEAC conference. In this episode, Maia goes into detail about what she loves about officiating, how to overcome mistakes, and what the impact of this moment means to her. She also elaborates on the positive influence of her mentors, how to block out negative voices, and advice for officials who are frustrated with their careers.
