#314 Camp clips 13 | Why I joined Crown Refs

The 13th installment of our Camp Clips series, Crown Refs is always looking for more high character individuals like Brandon who love officiating and would appreciate being a part of a special community of referees. Our program was built to get stronger with each new member we add. Montrell talks about why he enjoys being a part of the Crown Refs Mentor Community and how the program has developed him as an official. Jake was an official that we worked with long before ⁣ ⁣ Crown Refs and we appreciate his continued support and engagement in our community. He continues to greatly devlop each year and we ar excited for his ascension up the industry ladder. Roger Ayers talks about what a dream come true it was to officiate the Final Four game between Duke & UNC. Then we are back to signal school for tips on adding an additional layer of information on new directional points. As well as covering the best way to change your partner out of bounds call and also the best way to ask for help on an out-of-bounds play. We've all experienced the feeling of moving too fast on the basketball court both mentally and physically. Rushing only leads to mistakes in all walks of life and that's why it's essential to try and master the skills of patience and poise. In such a wildly emotional game we have to be the emotionally mature ones who are capable of being the bigger person at ALL times. ⁣ ⁣ đ—đ—Œđ—¶đ—» đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż đ—°đ—Œđ—șđ—șđ˜‚đ—»đ—¶đ˜đ˜†âŁ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ đ—Šđ—”đ—Œđ—œ đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż 𝗧đ—Č𝗼đ—ș đ—Šđ˜đ—Œđ—żđ—Č⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝗕𝘂𝘆 đ—„đ—Č𝗳đ—Č𝗿đ—Čđ—Č 𝗚đ—Č𝗼𝗿⁣ Refereestore.com

#313 Camp Clips 12 | Positive Self-Talk Only

The 12th installment of our Camp Clips series, Paul describes what the origin of signal school and demonstrates all of the different signals in the workout. Paul provides a couple cues that will help add strength and polish such as - PUNCH THE SKY and Copy & Paste. How many of us have incorrectly called a 5-second violation because we succumbed to the pressure of everyone yelling for 5 seconds and anticipated the call? Practice your hand count with a visible timer to build that automatic muscle memory. One of the benefits of signal school is fine-tuning all of the things that you may not realize. We provide the 3-step technique when presenting the block signal and we discuss the subtle differences between on the spot vs at the table. Just like players who work on their left hand to expand their skill set, as officials we should have that same approach. I hope this conversation can help at least one person who's felt the same way that Taylor has and realize that our weaknesses have the opportunity to become our greatest strength. Remember to build yourself up with positive self-talk and eliminate the language that has insecurity in it. Thank you to tiktok for all your feedback as we appreciate you taking time out of your day to share your thoughts on our content and thanks to Montrell Cade for attending signal school and being kind enough to give his reaction about the routine. đ—đ—Œđ—¶đ—» đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż đ—°đ—Œđ—șđ—șđ˜‚đ—»đ—¶đ˜đ˜†âŁ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ đ—Šđ—”đ—Œđ—œ đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż 𝗧đ—Č𝗼đ—ș đ—Šđ˜đ—Œđ—żđ—Č⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝗕𝘂𝘆 đ—„đ—Č𝗳đ—Č𝗿đ—Čđ—Č 𝗚đ—Č𝗼𝗿⁣ Refereestore.com

Officiating is a sisterhood & brotherhood that helps you form life-long relationships and leads to high-levels of self development and growth as a human being. Will Fried gives us some of the biggest things he's gained from becoming an official and how it has positively changed his life. Crown Refs is an all-inclusive community that supports one another to the fullest. ⁣ ⁣ We are so proud of the camaraderie and positive culture that we have in the group and each member we add continues to embody those values. Thanks for being part of our family Will! If you disagree then you're deploying judgement towards a person's appearance rather than judgement towards their performance. It's wildly acceptable for players and coaches to have tattoos, so why can't officials??⁣ ⁣ đ—đ—Œđ—¶đ—» đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż đ—°đ—Œđ—șđ—șđ˜‚đ—»đ—¶đ˜đ˜†âŁ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ đ—Šđ—”đ—Œđ—œ đ—Œđ˜‚đ—ż 𝗧đ—Č𝗼đ—ș đ—Šđ˜đ—Œđ—żđ—Č⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝗕𝘂𝘆 đ—„đ—Č𝗳đ—Č𝗿đ—Čđ—Č 𝗚đ—Č𝗼𝗿⁣ Refereestore.com

Being a great partner and always supporting one another is the most important skill set for sports officials to exhibit for a myriad of reasons. Especially, with so much division amongst referees within the industry and all of the outside negativity that is pushing referees out of the profession, being a great teammate is more vital than ever.⁣ ⁣ ⁣
⁣
In this episode, we meet with Collin Nelson, Ethan Brochtrup, and the rest of the “Badger Student Officials Association” (𝗕𝗩𝗱𝗔) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to break down and discuss over 20 tips and themes that you can immediately implement into your game to become a better partner. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣
⁣
We touch on some leadership and happiness hacks that will keep you accountable, proper online etiquette, and how to flatter your partners before ever working with them. We also list some effective strategies for coaches and players when they make comments about our partners.⁣

Branden Gibson, Beacon, NY, is a former division 2 basketball player at Dominican College who’s been official since 2016 on IAABO’s board 114. He’s currently working at the varsity/Juco level and is looking to be in a regular rotation in the various d2/d3 conferences in the area.⁣
⁣
On this episode of Game Notes, Branden had numerous interactions with the coach of Team A so we were able to dissect each conversation and make some adjustments to his approach, which created many communication and game management learning points for our dedicated audience of officials.⁣
⁣
One of our main themes when providing an explanation to a coach needs to as follows...before we can talk about the play we need to first assure the coach is communicating respectfully. If not, that becomes way more important than our explanation of the play. That is the leverage that allows us to shift the conversation from play-calling to sportsmanship.⁣

#273 Powered by Positivity | Big Game Officials Camp

This episode is all about mindset, perspective, and the importance of finding your true inner happiness. This was a recent presentation for Sara Woods and the great people from the Big Game Officials Camp in St. Louis. ⁣ ⁣ We covered 4 key traits that can lead to happiness on and off the court: Perspective, Positivity, Passion & Patience. ⁣ ⁣ ‱Having a healthy perspective that is grounded in gratitude will give you the emotional stability to purely appreciate every day as the blessing that it is. ⁣ ⁣ ‱Leading with Positivity and optimism as your centerpiece is a winning formula for success. Having an unwavering positive attitude is a superpower that can lead to so many other wonderful things in your life. ⁣ ⁣ ‱If you are passionate about something, that can be the fuel and the driving force that propels you to get to the next level. Passion produces effort. Consistent effort produces results. ⁣ ⁣ ‱Maybe the most important and difficult trait is patience. It’s no coincidence that learning patience takes a very long time. However, patience prevents pain, and frustration, and can lead to higher levels of peace and happiness. ⁣ ⁣ We know this episode will be an UNLOCK and will help at least 1 person. We hope this person is YOU!

#271 Questions & Answers with Ashley Smith | and the CR Mentor Group

In this episode, we hammer home the proper way to respond when coaches criticize our partners calls, how to work with partner's who don't love it like us, and our thoughts on calling late fouls based on if the ball goes in or not. We also looked at a block/charge play and tried to decipher if the defender was bracing for impact and absorbing the contact or lost their LGP. ⁣

#179 The Wonderful Women of Officiating | Ep. 6 | Dee Kantner

Dee Kantner is one of the greatest basketball officials of all time on any level. Some of her amazing accomplishments include 25 NCAA Final Fours and 14 National title games.⁣
⁣
She just completed her 33rd season at the Division 1 level while showing no signs of slowing down by working the 2022 NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, MN.⁣
⁣
To go along with her legendary college career, Dee and Violet Palmer also held the distinction of being the first female officials to work in a men’s professional sports league.⁣
⁣
Dee spent 5 years officiating in the NBA from 1997-2002 and also worked as the WNBA Supervisor of Officials. In 2002, she made her return to the NCAA Women’s game and hasn't looked back since. She's continued to #servethegame and pay it forward by sharing her knowledge and helping to develop and inspire a generation of basketball officials.⁣
⁣
In this episode, we discuss how to avoid bad partnering, not letting your ego get in the way, and Dee breaks down the O.I.L. strategy as an effective way to process situations more clearly.⁣
⁣
We also discuss several more topics like why coaches are not your friends, how to recover from disappointment, things to stop saying about coaches, and the correlation between over-selling and incorrect calls.⁣

#253 Rapid Responses 8 | feat. Coach Sheldon | [Full Episode available on PATREON]

This episode is the 8th installment of our Rapid Response series, which is designed to help arm your tool belt with ready and effective responses for ANYTHING a coach throws at you. In this session, we hit on some powerful themes like:⁣
⁣
𝟭. It's more important to establish respectful communication guidelines than it is to provide a good explanation about a play.⁣
⁣
𝟼. Hence, be sure to prioritize the most important topics during your conversations (ex. if they're screaming about a block/charge play, we need to address the scream before the block/charge)⁣
⁣
𝟯. The Power of Complimenting the coach when they are speaking respectful is a great way to stroke their ego while indirectly setting professional expectations⁣
⁣
𝟰. The Power of Complimenting your partner over a call while you're near the coach's bench is a way of showing unity while providing assurance and reinforcement that the call was correct⁣
⁣
đŸ±. Officials need to get out of their comfort zone and realize that if the coach is yelling at any member of the CREW, then they are yelling at YOU. ⁣
⁣
đŸČ. Many officials will not address the coach unless they are speaking directly to them. Being a great partner can be uncomfortable sometimes but having your teammates back through thick and thin is always the right thing to do.⁣
⁣
𝟳. It's imperative that the table side official act as a de-escalator if the coach is shouting across the court. Many times, the closest official to the bench can play a pivotal role in properly managing the coach's behavior⁣
⁣
We touch on all of these topics and much more on during this 100-minute communication session. We hope you grow from this!⁣

#241 Agent Zero | Gilbert Arenas | 3-time NBA All-Star | The No Chill Podcast

Gilbert Arenas was a prolific offensive player during his 12-year NBA career playing for a total of 4 teams. He was the 2003 NBA’s most improved player and averaged over 20 ppg and 5 assists including over 29 ppg in 2006.

He joins the CR podcast to talk about some common things that players dislike about officials and what's eating at him about NBA referees. Our topics include trash-talking, respect for the game, what he appreciates about officials, and what the NBA players thought of the Tim Donaghy scandal.

This was a very entertaining and insightful discussion between a player and a ref as we tried to iron out some of our differences and find a common ground. Special thanks to Gilbert for his contributions to our program.

#232 Re-Applying the Pressure | with Bill Spooner | Crown Refs Mentor

This audio is an exclusive interview with former 32-year NBA official Bill Spooner. Bill has worked over 1500 regular-season games and 100 NBA playoff games in his amazing tenure. ⁣
⁣
In this episode, we spoke about having mental toughness and list specific ways that officials can re-apply the pressure back on the coaches and players. This is a concept that is foreign to most referees but is something we are leaning heavily into at Crown Refs. We thank Bill for displaying the type of grit that more officials need to embody.⁣
⁣

#231 Rapid Responses 5 | A Renewed Focus on Respect | CR MENTOR

#231 Rapid Responses 5 | A Renewed Focus on Respect | CR MENTOR

This episode features the 5th session of our rapid response training with the Mentor group. We lead by covering a new memo from the NCAA regarding sportsmanship, bench decorum, calling the rules as written, and a renewed sense of respect for the game. ⁣
⁣
We found this information to be a foundational tool on how we should manage the game and it also provided some new language for us to integrate into our responses to coaches and players. ⁣
⁣
We also heard different members of the group share recent scenarios involving coaches, how they handled it and what they can do better. We hope this audio helps you add a few things to your belt.⁣

#230 Signal School Live | Session 2 | Stay Here, Wave off, hit to head, chucking

#230 Signal School Live | Session 2 | Stay Here, Wave off, hit to head, chucking

This episode features the second installment of Signal School-Live with the Crown Refs Mentor group. In this session, we practice 4 different signals to improve our form and presentation during our games including the “stay here” signal, the wave off, hit to the head and chucking. ⁣
⁣
We recommend utilizing the stay here signal as a highly effective way to communicate that it's a non-shooting foul in the frontcourt (post, rebounding, cutting fouls).⁣
⁣
Thank you to all of the officials who participated in this session as it takes a high level of confidence and humility.⁣

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3

The Real Coach D, Phil Diasparra, is back for his 3rd installment as he gives us 7 Qualities of a Great Official. We hope you enjoy!

Integrity – great officials are the guardians of honesty in athletics. He must maintain a complete absence of bias. An official holds the position in the world of sports not unlike a judge in a court of law. If you aspire to be a great official you never put yourself in a position where your integrity could be questioned. The integrity of the game must always be upheld.⁣

Hustle- Officiating is a game of angles and positioning, officiating hustle describes movement and court position. There is no connection to speed and meaningless motion. Every great official moves efficiently to be in the right place at the right time. It’s the only way to see the entire play and make the correct call.⁣

Judgment- Great judgment is a byproduct of effort and experience. It goes beyond the rule book and includes an almost instinctive ability to apply the critical principle of advantage/disadvantage. This is at the heart of officiating that no team or player gets an unfair advantage or is placed at an unfair disadvantage.⁣

Communication-90% of officiating is being a people person, know how to deal with people. Listening is important that’s why we have two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as we speak.⁣
Communication means “can you deal with people?” Can you deal with coaches, players during a game? Communication can be accomplished in many ways and in most cases, the situation will dictate your appropriate response. Sometimes a simple response to the question, a one-word answer, or a look can communicate what is needed at a particular time. Saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can help one avoid potential problems in a game. Communication is also the knowledge of when it’s best not to say anything.⁣

Consistency- Young officials have more difficulty with consistency than any other quality, mainly because they lack the experience to realize when their decisions are inconsistent. Everyone has some difficulty in this regard, but the great officials are unrelenting in their judgment. They see and call a game better than their colleagues. The key is to make the same call on the same kind of play whether it’s the first minute of the game or the score is tied with one minute left to play. If they believe an official is consistent, coaches and players will adjust accordingly. Inconsistent decisions on similar plays trigger negative behavior and poor sportsmanship among players and invite criticism from coaches. If you try and fail it’s a mistake, if you repeat the mistake it’s a decision.⁣

Confidence- There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of the situation, personalities involved, pressures from the crowd, or possible repercussions, great officials place fairness above all other concerns. They act confidently and according to the dictates of that value. You should hold yourself to a Higher than normal ethical standard. Be a legacy leader.⁣

Common Sense - I’ve saved this one for last. Of the qualities listed, common sense is the most important. That which is fair and right must take precedence throughout each game. Common sense ensures that fairness, understanding, and the best interests of the game are foremost in the mind of a great official. If you truly understand the spirit and intent of the rules, common sense will guide you well.⁣
