#314 Camp clips 13 | Why I joined Crown Refs
The 13th installment of our Camp Clips series, Crown Refs is always looking for more high character individuals like Brandon who love officiating and would appreciate being a part of a special community of referees. Our program was built to get stronger with each new member we add. Montrell talks about why he enjoys being a part of the Crown Refs Mentor Community and how the program has developed him as an official. Jake was an official that we worked with long before
Crown Refs and we appreciate his continued support and engagement in our community. He continues to greatly devlop each year and we ar excited for his ascension up the industry ladder. Roger Ayers talks about what a dream come true it was to officiate the Final Four game between Duke & UNC. Then we are back to signal school for tips on adding an additional layer of information on new directional points. As well as covering the best way to change your partner out of bounds call and also the best way to ask for help on an out-of-bounds play. We've all experienced the feeling of moving too fast on the basketball court both mentally and physically. Rushing only leads to mistakes in all walks of life and that's why it's essential to try and master the skills of patience and poise. In such a wildly emotional game we have to be the emotionally mature ones who are capable of being the bigger person at ALL times.

#313 Camp Clips 12 | Positive Self-Talk Only
The 12th installment of our Camp Clips series, Paul describes what the origin of signal school and demonstrates all of the different signals in the workout. Paul provides a couple cues that will help add strength and polish such as - PUNCH THE SKY and Copy & Paste. How many of us have incorrectly called a 5-second violation because we succumbed to the pressure of everyone yelling for 5 seconds and anticipated the call?
Practice your hand count with a visible timer to build that automatic muscle memory. One of the benefits of signal school is fine-tuning all of the things that you may not realize. We provide the 3-step technique when presenting the block signal and we discuss the subtle differences between on the spot vs at the table. Just like players who work on their left hand to expand their skill set, as officials we should have that same approach. I hope this conversation can help at least one person who's felt the same way that Taylor has and realize that our weaknesses have the opportunity to become our greatest strength.
Remember to build yourself up with positive self-talk and eliminate the language that has insecurity in it. Thank you to tiktok for all your feedback as we appreciate you taking time out of your day to share your thoughts on our content and thanks to Montrell Cade for attending signal school and being kind enough to give his reaction about the routine.

More postgame feedback, strengthening the chop, different ways to show game awareness, and what is the correct sequence of signals for a 3pt make and 1. discuss and 1 mechanics also when a coach tries to put us in a box by saying "the same exact play happened on that end and you didn't call it", quickly respond with "some plays can be similar but never the same". very rarely will you see two of the exact same plays in a game so don't allow that language into the convo.

#303 RefMasters feat. James Williams & Kane Fitzgerald | NBA Finals Officials
We are excited to welcome 2 NBA Finals officials and the creators of Ref Masters, James Williams, and Kane Fitzgerald. James is in his 13th season as Kane recently stepped away to be Vice President of Referee Operations. These gentlemen bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that they shared with us throughout this 98-minute session.
In this episode, we spoke about their journey to the NBA, bouncing back from failures, avoiding trying to prove their worth to anyone, and trusting your partners. The fellas also tell us about the idea behind RefMasters and some of the exciting things to look out for in the future. We hope you enjoy it!

#300 Mastering the Crafts | feat. Gene Steratore | Super Bowl & NCAA tournament Referee | CBS Rules
Welcome to the 300th episode of the Crown Refs Podcast. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support as it’s been a driving force behind us being able to hit this small milestone.
Gene Steratore is a flat-out officiating legend who’s worked in the Super Bowl, and the NCAA tournament, and is currently the CBS Rules Analyst for the NFL & College Basketball. For an official to have this type of seasoning is rare and we are super honored to have Gene share his knowledge and experience with the Crown Refs Community.
In this episode, we discuss the early tutelage Gene had growing up in a family of officials and how it impacted his long career both on and off the court/field. We went in-depth into communication and game management as Gene shared and simulated numerous ways to effectively respond to the coach.
We also covered the superpowers of empathy, kindness, and integrity and why every official should exemplify those traits.
We hope you enjoy this episode and learn a ton.

#298 Building with Brett | Brett Coleman | Official since 2015
Brett Coleman is a passionate 7-year official from Livingston, New Jersey who's been a part of Crown Refs Mentor since March 2021. His goal is to make Division 1 and possibly beyond. He joined Crown Refs because of the valuable content and engaging community that we have!
In this episode, we cover a lot of different topics including late game "take fouls' and intentional foul scenarios and how to proactively manage them. We also discussed this macro point that can help everyone- Don't allow previous possessions to impact the current one. Just like players we have to have a next play mentality and we are only as good as our last call. So, this serves as a reminder to stay focused and be in the moment. There are many other takeaways from this episode that we think you will find super helpful. Have a great season!

Officiating is a sisterhood & brotherhood that helps you form life-long relationships and leads to high-levels of self development and growth as a human being. Will Fried gives us some of the biggest things he's gained from becoming an official and how it has positively changed his life. Crown Refs is an all-inclusive community that supports one another to the fullest.
We are so proud of the camaraderie and positive culture that we have in the group and each member we add continues to embody those values. Thanks for being part of our family Will! If you disagree then you're deploying judgement towards a person's appearance rather than judgement towards their performance. It's wildly acceptable for players and coaches to have tattoos, so why can't officials??

In the 7th installment of our Camp Clips series, we jump in on a late game scenario where the officials discuss time, score, foul situation, and a proactive method to avoid an intentional foul. We discuss proper out-of-bounds mechanics, lowering your numbers to face-level, and not allowing any parts of the game to shock us or throw us off.
For block/charge plays, we must certify the legality of the defender before the contact occurs to help guide you to the best decision. We also touched on proper rebounding mechanics, the correct way to signal when our partners ask for help, and remembering to keep the fingers tucked when pointing. Have a great rest of your day!

#285 The User Manual on Great Partnering | Badger Student Officials Association | Join us on Patreon
Being a great partner and always supporting one another is the most important skill set for sports officials to exhibit for a myriad of reasons. Especially, with so much division amongst referees within the industry and all of the outside negativity that is pushing referees out of the profession, being a great teammate is more vital than ever.
In this episode, we meet with Collin Nelson, Ethan Brochtrup, and the rest of the “Badger Student Officials Association” (𝗕𝗦𝗢𝗔) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to break down and discuss over 20 tips and themes that you can immediately implement into your game to become a better partner.
We touch on some leadership and happiness hacks that will keep you accountable, proper online etiquette, and how to flatter your partners before ever working with them. We also list some effective strategies for coaches and players when they make comments about our partners.

Luke, is a Canadian basketball referee from Vancouver, BC who’s been official since 2016. He aspires to become FIBA certified, get hired into a college conference, and ultimately make officiating a full-time gig.
In this episode of Game Notes, we reverse the format as Luke breaks down one of my block/charge plays from a previous season. We also discuss the fact that we shouldn’t overthink technical fouls and create reasons as to why we should shy away from accessing them. We also add more context to the term “film doesn’t lie” and add an interesting perspective to the true validity of that statement.

#282 Game Notes w/Branden Gibson | 6-year Official | Beacon, NY
𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟬𝟮𝟬 | 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗶𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗻
Branden Gibson, Beacon, NY, is a former division 2 basketball player at Dominican College who’s been official since 2016 on IAABO’s board 114. He’s currently working at the varsity/Juco level and is looking to be in a regular rotation in the various d2/d3 conferences in the area.
On this episode of Game Notes, Branden had numerous interactions with the coach of Team A so we were able to dissect each conversation and make some adjustments to his approach, which created many communication and game management learning points for our dedicated audience of officials.
One of our main themes when providing an explanation to a coach needs to as follows...before we can talk about the play we need to first assure the coach is communicating respectfully. If not, that becomes way more important than our explanation of the play. That is the leverage that allows us to shift the conversation from play-calling to sportsmanship.

The NFHS just the released the Points of Emphasis for the 2022-23 basketball season with the main focus centered around Sportsmanship and respect for the game. Now more than ever officials have the leverage and support to call the rules as written and not allow verbal abuse towards officials or disrespectful behavior amongst opponents. We just need to have the communication and game management skills to execute these rules properly.
The CR Mentor group spent time discussing these points of emphasis and how we can tactically apply the information in our games. We also covered a full pregame conference and listed many points that we think will help you this season and beyond.

#273 Powered by Positivity | Big Game Officials Camp
This episode is all about mindset, perspective, and the importance of finding your true inner happiness. This was a recent presentation for Sara Woods and the great people from the Big Game Officials Camp in St. Louis.
We covered 4 key traits that can lead to happiness on and off the court: Perspective, Positivity, Passion & Patience.
•Having a healthy perspective that is grounded in gratitude will give you the emotional stability to purely appreciate every day as the blessing that it is.
•Leading with Positivity and optimism as your centerpiece is a winning formula for success. Having an unwavering positive attitude is a superpower that can lead to so many other wonderful things in your life.
•If you are passionate about something, that can be the fuel and the driving force that propels you to get to the next level. Passion produces effort. Consistent effort produces results.
•Maybe the most important and difficult trait is patience. It’s no coincidence that learning patience takes a very long time. However, patience prevents pain, and frustration, and can lead to higher levels of peace and happiness.
We know this episode will be an UNLOCK and will help at least 1 person. We hope this person is YOU!

#271 Questions & Answers with Ashley Smith | and the CR Mentor Group
In this episode, we hammer home the proper way to respond when coaches criticize our partners calls, how to work with partner's who don't love it like us, and our thoughts on calling late fouls based on if the ball goes in or not. We also looked at a block/charge play and tried to decipher if the defender was bracing for impact and absorbing the contact or lost their LGP.

#264 Talking with Taylor | Taylor Hamm and the CR Mentor Community
As we switch the format up, we got a chance to hear questions and topics curated by new CR member Taylor Ham. We spoke about having the adaptability to work any type of game but staying consistent with a universal approach no matter the level. Other topics include: End of quarter procedures, Throw-Ins, Responding to unsporting behavior from Coaches/players in atypical situations.
Here are some of the episode takeaways from our teammates on the call:
𝗟𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗮 says "A takeaway I had was to not be afraid as a young official to incorporate the proper mechanics, rotations, rules in an environment where my partners may be too comfortable or relaxed"
𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗲 says "You are a product of your habits"
Alan says "Don't deviate from proper mechanics and rule enforcement based on the level of play"
𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼 says "Understanding the many different situations and how to adjudicate each correctly"
𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 says “Knowing the mechanics to make a ruling on last second shots, Communicating with our partners with help information that we are 100% sure about”

#179 The Wonderful Women of Officiating | Ep. 6 | Dee Kantner
Dee Kantner is one of the greatest basketball officials of all time on any level. Some of her amazing accomplishments include 25 NCAA Final Fours and 14 National title games.
She just completed her 33rd season at the Division 1 level while showing no signs of slowing down by working the 2022 NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, MN.
To go along with her legendary college career, Dee and Violet Palmer also held the distinction of being the first female officials to work in a men’s professional sports league.
Dee spent 5 years officiating in the NBA from 1997-2002 and also worked as the WNBA Supervisor of Officials. In 2002, she made her return to the NCAA Women’s game and hasn't looked back since. She's continued to #servethegame and pay it forward by sharing her knowledge and helping to develop and inspire a generation of basketball officials.
In this episode, we discuss how to avoid bad partnering, not letting your ego get in the way, and Dee breaks down the O.I.L. strategy as an effective way to process situations more clearly.
We also discuss several more topics like why coaches are not your friends, how to recover from disappointment, things to stop saying about coaches, and the correlation between over-selling and incorrect calls.

#261 Refs Need Love 2 | Tik Tok Live w/David Gerson
David Gerson is no stranger to being a bit outside the mainstream. His high school yearbook quote was “it’s better to stand alone for the right reasons, than be together for the wrong.” Whether it was student government or as a team captain and president of his university Rugby team in college, he wants to stand for what is right, not necessarily what is popular.
David has been a soccer referee for the past 7 years based in Atlanta, GA. He enjoys the physical and mental challenges that being an official presents on a daily and weekly basis. It is a never ending journey of learning and fitness.
Most recently, he has created a brand called Refs Need Love Too that is devoted to education, community and inspiration for referees in all sports worldwide.

#253 Rapid Responses 8 | feat. Coach Sheldon | [Full Episode available on PATREON]
This episode is the 8th installment of our Rapid Response series, which is designed to help arm your tool belt with ready and effective responses for ANYTHING a coach throws at you. In this session, we hit on some powerful themes like:
𝟭. It's more important to establish respectful communication guidelines than it is to provide a good explanation about a play.
𝟮. Hence, be sure to prioritize the most important topics during your conversations (ex. if they're screaming about a block/charge play, we need to address the scream before the block/charge)
𝟯. The Power of Complimenting the coach when they are speaking respectful is a great way to stroke their ego while indirectly setting professional expectations
𝟰. The Power of Complimenting your partner over a call while you're near the coach's bench is a way of showing unity while providing assurance and reinforcement that the call was correct
𝟱. Officials need to get out of their comfort zone and realize that if the coach is yelling at any member of the CREW, then they are yelling at YOU.
𝟲. Many officials will not address the coach unless they are speaking directly to them. Being a great partner can be uncomfortable sometimes but having your teammates back through thick and thin is always the right thing to do.
𝟳. It's imperative that the table side official act as a de-escalator if the coach is shouting across the court. Many times, the closest official to the bench can play a pivotal role in properly managing the coach's behavior
We touch on all of these topics and much more on during this 100-minute communication session. We hope you grow from this!

#247 The CR Vlog 02 | Helping in Hoboken | with Mike Evans
This vlog was recorded in New Jersey in January 2022 as Mike Evans and I went to observe & work with some officials from the Hoboken, NJ area.
𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘴 is a league and rec program organized by Andrew Impastato who also assigns officials to work their various leagues. After seeing some of my Tik Tok content, Andrew decided he wanted me to come down to Hoboken to help train his officials and give them feedback during and after their games. This video documents over 120 minutes of our interactions with the 4 officials (𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯 𝘓𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩, 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘎𝘪𝘣𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘑𝘳, 𝘒𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘺 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘨) covering everything from positioning, mechanics, play-calling, and more. Some of our teaching themes included mirroring the ball in the lead, position adjusting during rebounding coverage, and how believability leads to more trust.
Special thanks to everyone who contributed to this Vlog as we had a terrific group of officials who had a lot of interesting conversations that we think you will grow from. Thank you for being a part of our community! Full video available exclusively on 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗻.𝗰𝗼𝗺/𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘀

#233 Film Night 3 | Chiene Jones | Jorelle Pitter | Donald Griffin | Pedro Rodrigues
In our 3rd film session with Crown Refs Mentor, we break down one of my recent games from the 21-22 season. We discuss how and when to use our 3 different voices-Command presence, normal, diffusing.
We also speak about why we talk ourselves out of upgrading fouls and why we shouldn't ignore unsportsmanlike conduct just because our partner does. Some other plays we look at involve pass/crash criteria and a monster time and distance play from Carmela Garcia.

#232 Re-Applying the Pressure | with Bill Spooner | Crown Refs Mentor
This audio is an exclusive interview with former 32-year NBA official Bill Spooner. Bill has worked over 1500 regular-season games and 100 NBA playoff games in his amazing tenure.
In this episode, we spoke about having mental toughness and list specific ways that officials can re-apply the pressure back on the coaches and players. This is a concept that is foreign to most referees but is something we are leaning heavily into at Crown Refs. We thank Bill for displaying the type of grit that more officials need to embody.
Other topics include Kobe’s 81 performance, why we shouldn't sell, what to do when your partner calls a technical foul and the bond that he shares with his son Drew through officiating.

#231 Rapid Responses 5 | A Renewed Focus on Respect | CR MENTOR
This episode features the 5th session of our rapid response training with the Mentor group. We lead by covering a new memo from the NCAA regarding sportsmanship, bench decorum, calling the rules as written, and a renewed sense of respect for the game.
We found this information to be a foundational tool on how we should manage the game and it also provided some new language for us to integrate into our responses to coaches and players.
We also heard different members of the group share recent scenarios involving coaches, how they handled it and what they can do better. We hope this audio helps you add a few things to your belt.

#230 Signal School Live | Session 2 | Stay Here, Wave off, hit to head, chucking
This episode features the second installment of Signal School-Live with the Crown Refs Mentor group. In this session, we practice 4 different signals to improve our form and presentation during our games including the “stay here” signal, the wave off, hit to the head and chucking.
We recommend utilizing the stay here signal as a highly effective way to communicate that it's a non-shooting foul in the frontcourt (post, rebounding, cutting fouls).
Thank you to all of the officials who participated in this session as it takes a high level of confidence and humility.

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3
The Real Coach D, Phil Diasparra, is back for his 3rd installment as he gives us 7 Qualities of a Great Official. We hope you enjoy!
Integrity – great officials are the guardians of honesty in athletics. He must maintain a complete absence of bias. An official holds the position in the world of sports not unlike a judge in a court of law. If you aspire to be a great official you never put yourself in a position where your integrity could be questioned. The integrity of the game must always be upheld.
Hustle- Officiating is a game of angles and positioning, officiating hustle describes movement and court position. There is no connection to speed and meaningless motion. Every great official moves efficiently to be in the right place at the right time. It’s the only way to see the entire play and make the correct call.
Judgment- Great judgment is a byproduct of effort and experience. It goes beyond the rule book and includes an almost instinctive ability to apply the critical principle of advantage/disadvantage. This is at the heart of officiating that no team or player gets an unfair advantage or is placed at an unfair disadvantage.
Communication-90% of officiating is being a people person, know how to deal with people. Listening is important that’s why we have two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as we speak.
Communication means “can you deal with people?” Can you deal with coaches, players during a game? Communication can be accomplished in many ways and in most cases, the situation will dictate your appropriate response. Sometimes a simple response to the question, a one-word answer, or a look can communicate what is needed at a particular time. Saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can help one avoid potential problems in a game. Communication is also the knowledge of when it’s best not to say anything.
Consistency- Young officials have more difficulty with consistency than any other quality, mainly because they lack the experience to realize when their decisions are inconsistent. Everyone has some difficulty in this regard, but the great officials are unrelenting in their judgment. They see and call a game better than their colleagues. The key is to make the same call on the same kind of play whether it’s the first minute of the game or the score is tied with one minute left to play. If they believe an official is consistent, coaches and players will adjust accordingly. Inconsistent decisions on similar plays trigger negative behavior and poor sportsmanship among players and invite criticism from coaches. If you try and fail it’s a mistake, if you repeat the mistake it’s a decision.
Confidence- There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of the situation, personalities involved, pressures from the crowd, or possible repercussions, great officials place fairness above all other concerns. They act confidently and according to the dictates of that value. You should hold yourself to a Higher than normal ethical standard. Be a legacy leader.
Common Sense - I’ve saved this one for last. Of the qualities listed, common sense is the most important. That which is fair and right must take precedence throughout each game. Common sense ensures that fairness, understanding, and the best interests of the game are foremost in the mind of a great official. If you truly understand the spirit and intent of the rules, common sense will guide you well.
