Mental Heath & Burn-out [Inama E24]

I wish to take a moment to reflect on this past mental health month and just to share a bit about my own journey. I welcome you to read "He Called Me Tin," my first best-selling book on Amazon that still ranks for my strides and plight with my career and life abroad. I speak there on situations I had in my childhood, through college, upon
adulthood, when becoming a mother, and the joys I encountered in corporate settings and the ills that I encountered in government settings - albeit, they were all lessons in life that have assisted in molding me into a woman of discernment, resilience, bravery, and courage. For me, that is what I define my mental space as. It's evolved into a subconscious journey to self-discovery that I never knew. But I know what my triggers are. I know what my boundaries are. I know that all I need exists and that I will yoke with it. So now, I am able to be proactive and less retroactive in determining what my
needs are. So lately, I've noticed that I've been burnt out. I have been multi-tasking more than I should. I've, once again, changed my sleep schedule to accommodate some interests and other projects outside of traditional work, and I've been in deep thought. The key here is that I know the place and space I am in at this time and it's okay. The key here is that I once didn't know, and that wasn't okay. So as I reflect on all of the great resources and discussions that
have been happening over this last month, I am grateful that the conversation continues and that the stigmas begin to be laid to rest. Take care of you. Be clear in your needs and expectations of self. As I'm always rooting for myself, I'm rooting for you too. I wish you well.

What is Cultivation? [Inama E23]

Welcome back to another episode with me, Dr. Adrienne - global health informaticist, scientific editor, lover of nature, technology, and life. So, what is cultivation? How is growth evident, regardless of circumstances? What does pattern and past have to do with current and future manifestations? Whether it be in one's business, within one's personal life, towards goals that are underway, with technical observations and related strides, how do you define cultivation? To me, in this moment and in most instances of my journey, I've found that the remaining positive and seeing the "big picture" can aid in a more lucrative outcome. Whether that outcome results in success or failure, lessons will be learned and the puzzle pieces will come together. What does this mean? It means that I prefer to continue watering my roots...nurturing my foundation, and visualizing the growth that will come. And the same goes for my work with technology implementations, for training on medical systems in hospitals, data
collection for public health, business development for health information systems, etc. The time, energy, resources, and planning that is put in will result in benefits or, and just as important: lessons-learned.

Birthdays in Africa [Inama E20]

First off, what is "tech" when there are so many systems in place for innovation that are robust, creative, and utilizes digital techniques to accomplish objectives? How do you define it? As I mentioned in a former podcast, I came into this field right after the new millennium began in 2000 when the world was apparently supposed to come to an end. I was stuck and stoked! I enjoy how technology refines processes that were once manual or convoluted. Technology can be a means to efficiency, saving time, and standardizing visual data that is easy to process and analyze. It only made sense to me. There are times when I am intimidated, but I learn what I can and stay abreast as best as I can. I don't need to be an expert in every #emergingtechnology. I am so grateful to have landed in this arena.

Living and working in Africa as a diasporan is quite an enticing experience. I've learned that in the international development space, there are sometimes disparities between international workers vs. local workers, due to social constructs and systems that are actually hindering progress. Local staff that I've worked with have been some of the most talented, hard-working, passionate, and willing-to-learn people I've ever known. Coming from a "Western Society," even though I am Sierra Leonean-Gabonese by ethnicity, I realize that I have many privileges that leaves the door open to options that others may not have. When I work across cultures, I keep this in-mind and humble myself to meet people where they are. And in fact, there are even some local staff that have worked at more prominent organizations than I, or attended higher-ranked universities as I have. I've learned so much from them and my view on other cultures continue to evolve. We always hear to "never judge a book by its cover" and that is true. My book has been judged so much in my career. How dare I do that to others, in their country, on their land, with their social-political systems, customs, and heritage. No. I embrace it, learn from it, embed what I wish into my own, and build lasting relationships that go beyond the office. Cultural competence is something that is caught, not taught. Be kind. Work-Life (Re)balance in Digital Health [Inama E17]

Some would say that there is no such thing as work-life balance. Well,
to me, I believe that my time is best rationed appropriately. What I
do for a living, who I am at work, and what is required of me at home
could hone so many different variables and expectations. I find that I
maneuver best when I separate my important tasks from my priority
tasks.

Over the last couple of years, digital health has evolved so rapidly
in ways I never imagined. I am so blessed to be in a field that
continues to remain innovative, save lives, impact communities, and
redefine clinical and medical care and treatment. However, the swift
shifts were a bit overwhelming at first because many policies and
plans were not in place for such a worldwide emergency. I was brisk in
my need to reassess and re-associate my needs with what was going on
with the world. In our world. I decided to still put myself and my
families needs first as there were so many moving parts at work, at
home, and within myself.

And honestly, there are days when nothing got accomplished. It's
fundamental for me to obtain my being and be able to think clearly. I
wish to remain healthy and happy, as well as exude that to my family
and colleagues. The best of me comes with rest, understanding, a joy
for my contributions to the world, and loving myself.

As I continue to contribute to the field, I realize that there will be
some emerging technologies I just have not experienced yet, or new
health regulations I need to study. But, I continue doing the best
that I can and I know that my contributions are still profound, grand,
phenomenal, and bad to the bone. I learned to give myself grace.
