Curious Pavel - History meets Travel
By Curious Pavel
We get in touch with tour guides or knowledgeable locals and ask them about their area, so you don't have to. We speak about food, drinks, accommodation, prices, and sightseeing.
That way you can:
1) Travel remotely in the comfort of your chair
2) Have a guide book when you decide to visit the destination in person
Occasionally, we throw a curious travel story 😉
Learn something new with every episode 📚
The show is running weekly. New episode every Sunday, 2 PM (UK)

HOW TO MAKE MONEY WHILE TRAVELING * Tips From a Digital Nomad * S02E16
Making money while travelling around the world has always been a question mark for many. For this interview, I sat down with Rhonda who has been a digital nomad since 2013 and has been making a living through different sources. I am a believer in this and it is the way I prefer it, too. Two are my main reasons: 1) if you get cut off from one source of income due to reasons like a pandemic, then you are in a bit of a pickle; 2) this adds variety which is something I love. We discussed different options with Rhonda. And the beauty is that you can do these even if you are staying in your place, and not travelling much.

Travel to Malaga, Spain * Malaga Travel Guide | S01E15
Travel to Malaga, Spain! A walking tour with a guide in the Spanish city ► The Phoenicians first colonized the city of Malaga in 1000 B.C. and named it Malaka. The name of the city probably came from the Phoenician word 'Malac' which means 'to salt'. The Phoenicians settled along the river, which was the fish-salting center.
The beautiful city of Malaga offers around 330 sunny days in the year!
*Alcazaba*
Malaga was under Moorish rule for over 7 centuries. It is not a surprise that you can find an Alcazaba here. The word Alcazaba means a Moorish fortification in Spain and Portugal. It literally translates as a walled fortification in a city and this particular Alcazaba is the best-preserved Alcazaba in the whole of Spain!
Cathedrals can be found all around the world but that's not the case with Alcazabas. This is probably the most important landmark in Malaga. Curious Fact: This Alcazaba was never taken by force throughout history! Once, 7 000 Malagueños defended the castle against 80 000 Christians.

WHY WE CHANGE TIME - Daylight Saving Time Explained in 4 min (DST) * S01E13
Why do we change to DST or Daylight Saving Time? History is happy to explain this to us. It goes back to Benjamin Franklin who only mentioned it in an essay in the 18th century. George Hudson, who was born in New Zealand, introduced it for the first time almost 100 years later. But the first countries to implement it were the German Empire and Austro-Hungary in 1916 in order to save money from electricity and put them into war production. DST was used in WWI & WWII by other countries as well, following these two. It was a bit confusing at times as every country (and sometimes region) was choosing for itself. Nowadays it is a bit more standardized.

Life on a CRUISE SHIP as an employee - PROS & CONS * S02E14 - What is it like to work and travel on a cruise ship
Cruise ships: getting on a cruise might be nice but what is the case when it comes to living on a cruise ship. I used to live on an anchored ship so I have a slight idea of what it is to live on a ship but it was interesting to hear what is the case with the cruise ships. So I invited a girl that used to live on one.

A Stranger in Havana Asked Me To MEET HIS SISTER | Travel Podcast S02E13
Last week on the show we talked about travelling as a solo traveller. When you travel by yourself you can expand your horizon, make new friends, and be alone with your thoughts. Those are just some of the benefits of travelling by yourself but as you can imagine, there are downsides to it as well. You are a little bit more likely to have awkward situations and conversations.

Dealing With Loneliness as a Solo Traveller | Ideas For Making Friends on The Road S02E12
I tried solo travelling myself and found that it is not something that really fits me. I was very keen on hearing what Juleen has to say on the subject and we ended up discussing ways to meet people and make friends while travelling solo.
► About the guest:
Juleen is a Jamaican lover of travel, wine, and the beach. Although she always had a desire to travel, it wasn't until she left Jamaica to attend college in the United States that her dream was actually realised. During her junior year, she spent a year living and studying in Europe (Italy and Hungary), while visiting other countries. It was during this time that her love of solo travel grew strongest. These days, Juleen hosts carnival- and wine-related group trips for solo travellers through her business Jump & Wine Travel. She also hosts weekly wine reviews on her social media accounts.
=====
► Mentions in the Podcast:
- Use dating apps to meet locals and other travellers. I usually change my dating app bio to state that I'm visiting the city until a certain date and that I'm looking for people to meet up with or someone to show me around.
- Join travel Facebook groups. Before and during a trip, I usually, post in my travel groups asking for recommendations of things to do and ask if anyone else is in the area and would like to meet up for a meal or to do an activity.
- Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and talk to strangers. If you are out and see another person by themself, try to strike up a conversation. - Staying in hostels is great for meeting other travellers. That means, from the get-go, you have something in common, you love to travel and are exploring the same city. From there, you might meet people to go grab a meal with or go do an activity you are both interested in.
- Participate in group activities. Walking tours or activities hosted by hostels, for example, are great places to meet others. During a walking tour, when the tour guide isn't talking, you can interact with the people around you. Even if you don't meet people you want to hang out with afterwards, you get in some social time.

Travel anywhere with only 5 KG of luggage ft @the5kilotraveller | EP VIII
Everybody I know travels with a lot of luggage! Most people actually travel with more stuff that will be needed! But now I am proud to say I know somebody who travels with 5 kilos only. Anywhere! No matter a long or a short trip. Her name is Katherine and she shares some really interesting tips on the subject. Also, how she started travelling with only hand luggage, why she keeps doing it and what she learned from it!
=====
Katherine is a 5 Kilo Traveller from New Zealand. She loves to travel, and her passion is teaching people to travel with less luggage (not necessarily 5 kilos or 11 pounds - just less), so people stop struggling with heavy bags. " I initially travelled with a small bag as I was a solo female traveller and needed to feel safe and confident. Travelling with a small carry-on bag gave me this confidence and security. It also gave me the convenience of sightseeing and not having to lock my bag up somewhere or check-in early. My bag was able to be with me at all times, so I didn’t have to wait for it getting off planes or trains. I could get around very easily on local transport – in China, I got a ride on a scooter to my accommodation - try that with a suitcase!" "Travelling light makes travel easy and liberating. I have fewer decisions to make. I don’t lose things. Packing and unpacking is easy."

4. Pickering Place- London's smallest square! (I have a reel about it on my Insta)- notorious back in the day for gambling dens and as a location for duels.
5. Spitalfields- specifically the French Huguenot weaver's house's on Fournier street
6. St Martin in the Fields- a great example of the Palladian style of building in a church!

I got blind for 3 days! ft Sally Bunnell #VI
It was just the last episode when we had Sally over, telling us about her travel app - a great concept that can start make you money straight away. But I also liked Sally's personality, not just her app. That is why I asked her if she has some interesting stories to share. To my surprise, she came back to me with a whole list :D I picked this one as it sounded really curious and I hope we can all learn from it (that is the idea of these travel stories that are shared every once in a while).
Enjoy!

The travel app that pays you cash - NaviSavi ft Sally Bunnell #V
Not so long ago I was networking on LinkedIn when a lady invited me to join an app because of a few travel pieces that I posted on that platform. I downloaded the app, played with it a bit, and the concept seemed quite simple: share raw videos - get money for them. I ended up sharing my feedback on how the app can be improved which got me meeting with a few team members, and eventually, I ended up talking to Sally on Instagram. I am excited to share this opportunity with you, my fellow curious friends :)

Sugar Shack, Canada | how to collect maple syrup from trees
Once a year you can go around and enjoy a buffet with maple syrup goodies (like pouring maple syrup on the snow and grabbing it with a stick). These places are called Sugar Shack.
But what does sugar shack mean? A sugar shack, also known as sap house, sugar house, sugar shanty or sugar cabin, are small cabins or groups of cabins where sap, collected from sugar maple trees, is boiled into maple syrup. They are mainly found in Eastern Canada and northern New England. The reason for finding them only in those locations is that this is where you will find maple trees. It appears this is a great attraction and if you get the timing right, you are in for a treat... literally :D

Let's work together
Would you like to work together? | If you have been following my content, you know that I have never wanted to be a YouTuber. I only started doing YouTube videos because I wanted to share my work with the world. I wanted to let everyone know what I can do in terms of presenting. Things got carried away and I got more involved in behind-the-camera stuff. Things like filming and editing. I do love those things but somewhere down the line, I missed the main point, which is to be a presenter. I am planning to do more of this now.
But I also wanted to have my own show. I had that in some aspect when I was producing frequent videos about London. I kinda miss having a constant show around one subject and I am reconsidering doing it again.
I don't feel like doing it myself. I want to collaborate!
So if you are music composed, scriptwriter, video editor, illustrator, or creator of some sort, get in touch. Who knows, we might end up working on a project together.
I always love connecting with people. So even if we do not end up working together, I will keep your contacts in case someone around me needs your service.
Let's chat!

THE ITALIAN FORREST GUMP | a man walks 450 km after an argument with his wife
Italy's Forrest Gump ► Forrest Gump is famous for the many quotes and accomplishments. But it might just be the case that we got ourselves a real-lif Forrest Gump.
That happened last week in Italy. A man argues with his wife and ends up walking 450 km to cool off!
WHO DOES THAT?!?!
The story ends with the police who finds the man wandering around. Imagine if the police couldn't have stopped him... he could have been still walking, even to this day.
While many conclusions can be taken away from this story, something different came to my mind when I heard about this case. Listen till the end.

🇬🇧 Queen Victoria & Prince - brief history and monuments in London
Queen Victoria ruled in a time of prosperity when the British Empire reached almost a quarter of the world. Becoming a Queen at the age of 18, she was the first monarch to make Buckingham Palace the official residence of the monarch. Few years after that she got married to Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. He and the Queen had 9 children and 42 grandchildren. Most of them got married in different countries- Spain, Russia, Germany, Romania, Greece, Norway, and more. This "gave" Queen Victoria the title "Grandmother of Europe". Albert died about 20 years after he got married which devastated the Queen. She wore black clothes till the rest of her reign which in total was 63 years and 7 months, also known as the Victorian Era. That was the longest a monarch has ruled in Britain and she kept that record until Queen Elizabeth II broke it in 2015.

🇺🇸 🗣 Travel to Philadelphia, USA ft Kayla Marie #018
Welcome to Philadelphia! The city that hosted the Founded Fathers of the USA. In other words, this is the city where the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution were signed. The reason I like this episode is that, in addition to the usual stuff (what to see, eat, drink, and the culture), we talked about places to avoid. This is equally important when you visit a place for the first time. Hope you enjoy this episode. Use #curiouspavelpodcast to share your thoughts.
About Keyla:
Kayla Marie is a Pennsylvanian girl who spent five years in Philadelphia before moving abroad to Taiwan in 2019. In Philly, she experienced life in West and North neighborhoods as well as Kensington. In addition to her schooling in Philly, she was a tour guide for summer and always enjoyed showing her friends around the historic city when visiting. Today, she has no plans to return to Philadelphia, but greatly misses the culture, the people, and the creative city. Oh yes, and the food.
Find Kayla on Instagram as @kaylameetsculture
Mentions in the podcast:
Old City -- The main reason people come to Philadelphia is to learn about the birthplace of the United States. In the old city is here you find Independence Hall (where the declaration was signed), the first US post-office, the liberty bell, among many historic treasures.
City Hall & The Ben Franklin Parkway -- City Hall, where one can access the subway (or the L, as Philadelphians call it), is a beautiful building to admire in the city with its old architecture. From City Hall, Ben Franklin Parkway leads visitors to many of the city museums such as the Art Museum, Rodin Museum, and Natural Sciences Museum. (Rodin is confused with Rhodes in this podcast!)
Eastern State Penitentiary & Mutter Museum -- For lovers of all things weird and creepy, these destinations are the places to go. The Penitentiary is the US's first and houses prisoners before shutting down. Some of the sections are closed off, but the restored areas are a great place to visit and learn more about the dark history of this location. The Mutter Museum is another creepy museum, home to medical oddities and discoveries.
Food -- The food in Philadelphia, is incredibly diverse, with tastes from around the world. Visit Baltimore Avenue in West Philly to visit the best variety of global foods in Philly. And of course, we cannot forget the Philly Cheesesteak -- served on a hoagie roll, don't forget to add fried onions to this Philly delicacy -- you can even get it vegan

Horizontal vs Vertical Time Perspectives (China vs the World)
Time perspective - Horizontal vs Vertical point of view ► As you probably know I am an online instructor at the NAS Academy where I teach people from around the world how to create videos. I had a chat with 2 fellow instructors and, "smelled" something curious and started recording the conversation. Get this: most countries use a horizontal time perspective. For example, the future is ahead of us & the past is behind us. However, in some countries, like China, that is not the case. In China, the past is up and the future is down. This may sound confusing, as it was very confusing for me, but listen to this podcast and it will all make sense.
Are there any other countries that think of time the same? Send me a message and let me know.

The adaptation story is from a trip to Cambodia, on an island called Koh Rong, here is the video (vlog) I recorded on my first day arriving on the island: https://www.instagram.com/p/_mUhKknnL-/ "

Time to go back to Spain! In episode 2 of the podcast series, we travelled to Sevilla which is the capital of Andalucia. 🇧🇬 🗣 ️Travel to Sofia, Bulgaria ft Desi Nackova #003
In Episode 003 we are heading to my motherland, Bulgaria. I am having a wonderful talk with a local tour guide, Desi. Although I've never met Desi before and this is just the 2nd time we interact, I am always happy to have a chat with her. Hearing the passion and positivity in her voice can motivate you to explore any place she talks about. In addition to the "useful stuff" we talked about places from "off the beaten track".
Mentions in the podcast:
Places to eat and drink: Raketa Rakija Bar and Sputnik (for best rakija in town); Cosmos; The Little things; Made in Home; Shtastliveca To visit: St Nedelya square with the 4 religions - Christian Orthodox, Catholic, Synagogue and Mosque; St. George Rotunda (4th century); St. Sofia (6th century); Boyana Church; Main pedestrian street - Vitosha; NDK - national palace of culture1 day trip from Sofia:
Rila Monastery and Boyana Church OR Plovdiv (the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe)
2 Days Trip:
Belogradchik Rocks and Belogradchik Fortress + Magura Cave (prehistoric drawings; nearly 42 000 years old)
About Desi:
"As an experienced tour guide and travel advisor, I’ve visited many European countries, but something always pulled me back to my own country, Bulgaria. People often say that, “There are no coincidences.” For years my mum had been asking me to take a few days off and travel with her. Like many people, I had spent so much time looking for something over the fence. I never looked in my own back yard. When I finally took my mother up on her offer, she introduced me to so much Bulgarian history and showed me many places of natural beauty that I had never seen before. It was truly one of the best travel experiences I've ever had, and it lit a spark within me! I became passionate about sharing my beautiful country with others, but from a Bulgarians perspective."

🇪🇸 Plaza Espana - Seville, Spain
Plaza Espana in Seville is one of the spectacular things you can see not only in Seville but in whole of Spain. It is so magnificent that it has been even featured in movies like Star Wars and the Dictator.
The Plaza was built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition that was taking place the year after, in 1929.
