106. Behind the scenes of "Mending The Line" with director Joshua Caldwell.
In this episode, we speak with a guest unlike any other we've had before. Movie director Joshua Caldwell explains everything that goes into directing and creating a phenomenal movie with fly fishing at its heart. "Mending The Line" is a story about wounded veteran John Colter, who returns to the States, still carrying the demons of war, hauntingly disturbed by the everyday expectations of friendships and love interests. In Livingston, Montana, he meets Ike, a surly, headstrong fly-fisherman more than twice his age, and Lucy, a talented photographer turned librarian who reads aloud to veterans, both damaged in their own way. While getting treatment for his physical and psychological wounds, Colter wants only to re-enlist, to have something to die for. But the real challenge is finding something to live for.
In our conversation with Josh, we discuss all that goes into making a great film and hear some great behind-the-scenes stories.
"Mending The Line" will be available on Digital and On Demand starting September 26th.

105. When engineering meets art. A conversation with Brandon Bailes of Panther Branch Bugs on designing incredible Deer Hair Flies.
In this episode, Joshua and Caleb speak with Brandon Bailes of Panther Branch Bugs. Brandon is a NASA Engineering Technician by day and a fly-tying maniac at night. He resides in North Alabama with his wife and two sons, surrounded by countless small streams and cold and warm water creeks that they get to enjoy all year round.
Brandon grew up wading, fishing, and exploring these small hidden gems, and still, to this day, it’s his favorite type of water to fish due to the challenges it presents and the intimacy of being in close quarters with the quarry. He began fly fishing early but didn’t begin tying until he was an adult, mainly as a creative outlet to relax in the evenings. Brandon has become a master at tying spun deer hair poppers, amongst other amazing flies. He has been featured in Fly Tyer magazine and Field and Stream, where he was titled "The Michelangelo of Deer-Hair Flies."
In our conversation, we dive into Brandon's early love of fly fishing and go into depth on his process of creating beautiful deer hair bugs.

103. The best spot in the US to take kids fishing. Exploring Dry Run Creek with Chris Cain of Malfour Outfitters..
In this episode, Joshua and Caleb chat with Chris Cain of Malfour Outfitters. Chris grew up the son of a pastor in rural north Alabama, where his passions for Jesus and the outdoors were born. Throughout his upbringing, God saw fit to place men in Chris’s life to cultivate those passions and disciple him in faith and fishing. In 2013, Chris married his beloved Jana, and they moved to north Texas to start a family and begin a life in ministry. Chris served the local church for over eight years through various pastor roles. He now works in the fishing industry, manufacturing and selling rods and reels for Seaborn Outfitters and Bates Fishing Co. Chris and Jana have two boys, Wilder and Sawyer, and currently reside in Mountain Home, AR. For over a year, Chris has founded and is the lead guide for Malfour Outfitters. Malfour’s mission is to leverage the magnificence of creation in turning the hearts of people to their Heavenly Father, the God of creation. This is done by offering exceptional outdoor experiences and unique pastoral care to create a different pace in a different place so that when men leave, they do so with a different perspective.
In this conversation, we discuss:
-Dry Run Creek in northern Arkansas
-tips for dads taking kids fishing

102. Urban carp and minority representation in fly fishing with Nic Hall.
Nic Hall is a Marine veteran, Dad, and avid fly-fishing angler in Denver, Colorado. He mainly targets carp in urban environments and trout throughout Colorado. When not fishing, he volunteers with several nonprofits, engaging youth via the Trout Unlimited "Trout in the Classroom" program and teaching fly fishing to underrepresented minorities through fly fishing camps. He also serves as a Board Member of the Denver chapter of Trout Unlimited, where efforts are made to restore and conserve the Denver South Platte River.
Nic started fly fishing three years ago when a friend from West Virginia visited him in Colorado. Growing up as an urban kid in Baltimore, fly fishing was one of those things that didn't seem attainable. He didn't see anyone who looked like him fly fishing, so he never tried or was introduced to it until 2020.
As he becomes a more proficient angler, part of his goal is to share the experience with kids who look like him, ultimately helping them learn about angling, conservation, and overcoming adversity. He hopes that through his nonprofit volunteer work, he can preach stewardship on the water and get new anglers excited about fishing, protecting public lands, and conserving our waterways. Hence, they are here for the next generation.
In this episode, Joshua and Caleb chat with Nic about:
-all things carp fishing, especially in an urban environment
-minority representation in fly fishing
-giving back through fly fishing nonprofits
-tips for taking very young children fishing
and much more.
