Have you ever said to yourself, I need to weigh this number or why can’t I get back to the jean size I was in my 20’s. The standards we set for ourselves on being a certain size or look a certain way has been setting us up for harmful eating disorders or disordered eating habits that many people, male or female, struggle with.
And it is sad to say the statistics for eating disorders and disordered eating habits are higher than certain health diseases.
Our guest today, registered dietitian, Christy Maloney, is an expert in treating eating disorders and those with disordered eating habits. She earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and later extended her knowledge with a second career as a dietitian. The background of psychology and nutrition is a perfect match for helping her clients.

Christy is also a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and an expert leading the way in this area – join us for this conversation.
In this episode you will learn:
1. About the set point theory and how your body can resist weight loss

119. Why I Keep "Junk Food" in the House [solo episode]
First off, I do not like call food junk! Yes, there are foods that do not provide as many nutrients as other foods, but I enjoy eating all types of foods.
Remember food does not have morals!
A couple years ago, I hated having cookies, go-gurts, chips, or other types of foods in the house because my kids would eat them up in no time!
"Are you kidding me, I just bought this yesterday, how is it gone already?!"
It has taken me awhile to realize, but not having those types of foods was hurting my kid's relationship with food (and mine).
In this episode, I will share:what I have learned about buying foods for my kids and family my "aha moment" in the grocery store why scarcity of providing certain foods may not be helpful why I don't buy sugar-free fudge bars embracing the flavors of food is more satisfying
I hope this episode has inspired you to stress less about the foods you buy and eat all the foods you love!
Thank you so much for sharing your time here with us this week!

103 The Resolutions You Need to Start Today!
Happy New Year! We make the same resolution to lose weight, to work out more, and to eat healthier each year with the latest weight loss supplement or workout program that usually only last a month or two.
Why are the resolutions always focused on weight? Why do ads infer that something is wrong with our current body? Why do we feel the pressure to make up from those "guilty pleasures" from the holidays?
Are these resolutions making you happier?
I talk about the current audio book I am listening to, "Enough Already" by Valerie Bertinelli and briefly discuss her segment from two years on the Today Show, where she shares her story about emotional eating.

100. What You Say Matters: How you talk about food and your body when your kids are listening
As a mom and a dietitian, this topic is near to my heart.
*I want to bring awareness to this topic so we can teach our kids how to eat intuitively and stop stressing about all those diet culture food rules. Our kids are sponges and they hear us talking, so let's flip the script and show them how to eat to fuel our body, say positive things about body, and be a role model for them.
They hear us talking about what we say about food/diet.
They hear us talking about what we say about our bodies.
They hear you say, "I need to go on a diet to lose weight!"
They hear you say, "I need to cut out all carbs and sugar in my diet."
ALL foods fit in the diet
A "good" food doesn't mean you're a better person.
A "bad" food doesn't mean you're a bad person.
This connection is made by kids when we put labels on certain foods.
*A child is more likely to get diagnosed with an eating disorder, rather than diabetes.Check out the Scary Mommy Article: Kids Are Over 200 Times More Likely To Develop An Eating Disorder Than Diabetes

98. The Most Important Step to Building a Healthy Habit
I want to talk about the #1 thing you need to do TODAY to start a lifelong healthy habit.
I am not going to tell you; "you need cut out sugar " or "stop eating your favorite foods" or "only eat during a 4-hour period for the day".
These things are restrictive and only lead you to feeling out of control around food.
Two of my most recent popular reels are very relatable:"I can't stop thinking about the Halloween candy" "I start the day drinking a green smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch, and then I am starving and scarfing a pizza"
These reels are funny, but so true because they do not involve balanced eating.Raise your hand if you can relate? Me!
Today, I discuss my method in building lifelong healthy habits through my Daily Mini Goals method. I have been doing this with clients for over 15 years and it has been a game-changer!

82. The No B.S. Diet - Final Summer Diet Detox Series
The Summer Diet Detox Series has been a highlight to my summer as we have been in your ears this summer ditching diet culture. On this episode, I talk about my idea of the "No B.S. Diet." My goal is to help you discover what you see and hear about food and how it affects the way we think, talk, and act about food.
I discuss the latest health trends such as "gut health", "apple cider vinegar", "detoxes", "cleanses" and how they may be harmful to your health. The No B.S. Diet deletes the food shame game and takes a look at those social media accounts that advertise "why this food is bad for you" or "how to only eat "clean" foods, because everything else is dirty." Adding fear to what you eat and how you treat your body can SELL supplements, programs from people with no or very little education in nutritional sciences.
I also talk about the dramatic increase in eating disorders in children and why we need to stop obsessing about food and be the best role models for our kids.

74. Are Your Food Cravings Controlling You?
Does this title speak to you? This may be a good intro for the summer as we get caught up in those dieting thoughts that we talked about last week, when we start thinking about swimsuit/summer clothes.
This is an important topic and I think it is becoming a bit trendy, hot in marketing to get you pulled into certain diets. Marketing a diet to be solution to help you with these cravings and state "try this hunger suppressant to delete those cravings," it sounds good, right?
In this episode I provide 7 Tips to Help You Overcome Strong Food Cravings.I have looked at a couple of studies that discuss food cravings, here is the one I mentioned in the episode: The Psychology of Food Cravings: the Role of Food Deprivation
73. 5 Ways to Get Beach Body Ready for the Summer (I might surprise you with these simple tips!)
When you live in the Midwest and seasons changes, clothing changes. For me, there is something about that first time I put on shorts, I have so many feelings connected with it and usually not too excited. My kids will tell me, “Gosh, Mom your legs are really white.”
I will be honest, for me in the past, my legs have always been my trouble area, I have always kid them, tried to cover them up and just not feeling great about my body in the summer.
I remember in my early 20's I would wear jeans in extreme heat and that is just the way it was, no thoughts about wearing shorts or wearing a swimsuit in the summer.
And now, hitting the 40 mark, I realize who cares. I am going to buy comfy shorts that make me feel good inside and out.
As I am learning and teaching more about intuitive eating, mindful practices for the body and embracing body acceptance, there is so much more about yourself than how you look.
In this episode I discuss 5 ways you can feel better in your current body with simple tips for you enjoy the summer even more!

71. Why Do I Sabotage My Diet?
In the path to making peace with food, sometimes our old eating habits/thoughts return, and you may blame yourself for "falling off track, again!"
You feel discouraged and tell yourself, I have no will power to eat better or stick to a diet, I am such a failure!
You become frustrated and the cycle continues, upset you can’t lose weight, mad at yourself for screwing up AGAIN, disappointed in yourself for not sticking to the plan while your friend is crushing it, and you just feel awful about yourself.
It may be the sabotage syndrome. When we define sabotage, it means to destroy. When we use this word connected to our diet, it may mean a deliberate or unconscious thought or feeling that destroys an attempt to achieve your wellness goals.
Your mindset can be your biggest enemy, as that negativity sets in, you are stuck in this cycle of trying, failing, and blaming.
The message you give yourself through your conscious and unconscious thoughts have so much power to affect your behaviors, feelings and success.
I talk about the four A's to help you overcome the hiccups in your mindset.

63. Redefining Self-Care
Thank you for joining me this week for a quick solo episode. Today I want to talk about self-care. How do you define self-care? We see it on social media #selfcare with a variety of posts from selfies, beauty products, workouts, trips, Botox, skin care products, purchases, and many others. We talk about nurturing versus numbing self-care habits as the #selfcare may get a little muddled.
Self-care is a part of caring for yourself to feel better (each day). That is why I want to redefine self-care and discuss DAILY self-care habits. I have narrowed down 5 main points for DAILY self-care habits to keep your eating and moving habits consistent.
These main points keep your body and mind in balance to help you feel your best! If one area is missing, you get thrown off balance for the day. Learn how to achieve balance in your daily life with these important steps in making you and your health your highest priority!
62. From Picky Eating to Raising Intuitive Eaters with guest, nutritionist & chef, Hayley Walker, MS

Picky eating can be extremely difficult and cause stress for parents and the entire family. How do you stop tantrums at the dinner table when new foods are served? How do you comfort your child when this happens?
We talk with nutritionist, Hayley known on Instagram. Hayley has wonderful tips and advice to take your picky eater to an intuitive eater and have peaceful meals. We talk about the steps to introduce new foods, how to calm the worry of making sure your child is getting all the nutrition they need, and how to navigate the holidays, especially when family members may be commenting on what your child is or is not eating. 61. Why Your Dietitian May Be Your Next "Therapist"
First off disclaimer, I am not saying a dietitian can take the place of your therapist. Therapists are necessary for eating disorders and different degrees of disordered eating patterns to help you in your relationship with food. In fact, I was lucky enough to have a licensed therapist on the show in episode: #15 Food Therapy & Body Acceptance, be sure check out licensed therapist, Cheri @foodfreedomtherapist.
The connection here is, how many times do you see a therapist? Weekly, bi-monthly? It is usually on a consistent basis.
If you are needing to make a change in your eating habits, maybe adapting intuitive eating practices, or building a base of balanced nutrition, a couple sessions with a registered dietitian may not cut it. You may need to take a consistent practice of meeting with a dietitian longer than a couple of weeks because learning this process takes time and practice. And if meeting with a dietitian is not necessary for you at this time, then what can you do to help you through this journey? Let me explain . . .
60. The Missing Step to Success in Your Weight Loss Journey, with guest, Katie Allen

Katie shares the seedling that started her health journey, that ONE thing that was missing, and has flourished to help her lose about a 160 pounds. Even though that number on the scale sounds amazing, there’s so much more than focusing on the physical appearance in this process.

50. 7 Strategies to Overcome Overeating - IG Live with guest registered dietitian, Karina @allfoodsfit.nutritionist
What is overeating? How do you describe the physical cues of overeating? Is overeating different on a normal day versus a holiday or celebration? How do you quiet those voices about what you think about overeating?
Well, to many overeating relates to the physical fullness, like you might see after a holiday meal. Feeling extremely full, even changing into sweat pants, but the question for many is how to prevent it or how to make up for it after overeating. Some people have the mindset they must skip meals during the day and save their calories for the big meal. Or workout hard and burn off all those calories either you are going to consume or already consumed.
This episode a recording of an IG Live I was able to do with my dietitian friend, Karina Tolentino, RD @allfoodsfit.nutritionist. Karina has been on the show before back in February, Ep. 17. Fasting, Carbs, Detoxing, Oh My!

45. Bridging the Gap in Nutrition Education in the Grocery Store
Dietitians are reaching more people by being in a variety of jobs that help bridge the gap in nutrition education. Dietitians have been in the grocery stores for about 20+ years and the job opportunities have ebbed and flowed in this setting through the years, but they are still providing exceptional services to their customers.
On this episode I am talking with Hy-Vee dietitian, Ashley Danielson. Hy-Vee grocery stores are located in the Midwest, but I know other retailers across the country provide similar services. (*Make note, a dietitian may be referred to as a nutritionist, but all nutritionists are not dietitians. There are differences in education and legal differences between the two titles. DM for more info.)
We talk about a variety of services a retail dietitian provides, and how they connect to more people that need help and answer questions from simple nutritious meal planning ideas to managing blood sugars for diabetes, to food allergies, and so much more.
Our guest, Ashley loves to educate customers and clients in a fun and lively setting with simple ways to incorporate delicious food into everyday life. As a food and nutrition expert, Ashley is dedicated to helping people live healthier and happier every step of the way. Join us of this conversation.

39. One Habit to Help Decrease Aging
What is one thing you can do to help slow down the process of aging? Or what is one habit you can start today to help decrease the effects of muscle loss?
Well, maybe I should have been a physical therapist because I am big believer in focusing on exercise to help with aches and pains in the body.
Strength training has always been considered a promising intervention for muscle deterioration. Over the years, exercise professionals and researchers have been reviewing and examining the effects of strength and resistance training on the aging population. Although aging is a natural process, strength training could slow down symptoms of muscle atrophy, lengthen independence, and improve quality of life.

12. What I have learned from dieting . . . .
Today’s episode I share quite a bit, maybe too much, but if you can learn from my mistakes or in some way it helps connect the dots for you about the downsides to dieting, then my job is done.
I share my relationship with food, my body image and my story with diets growing up. Diets started at an early age for me and it gets messier in my early 20's . . . so let's begin!
My favorite part of the episode - I talk with my nephew that has been doing keto . . . after I said, "No, don't do it!" It is a fun conversation
11. A New Year, A New Mindset: Making the shift and a glimpse at fad diets
Do you ever hear the saying, "A New Year, A New You!" So . . . our old self was not up to par? Do we need to make a change on how we look at the beginning of the year?
Let's make 2021 different and focus on how we think about ourselves instead of all about how we look or are "supposed" to look.
How do you make the mindset shift when we are bombarded with ads for promoting the latest and greatest diet? It takes time, practice and a little grace. Let me explain . . .
I also do a brief overview of fad diets and what they promise. They promise amazing things but will it work for you? Can you make these habits sustainable?
And probably my favorite part of the podcast is talking a little bit about a couple of my clients and how they are making the mind shift change. It is WONDERFUL! Join me on this discussion!
10. Hormones, Diet Trends & More with guest, Registered Dietitian, Amy Crees, RD
Every time she spoke, my insides were jumping with joy, saying to myself, Yes, this is so good! She clears out the clutter in the nutrition world when discussing fad diets and using food as way to cure the body for certain ailments. Her message is all about listening to your body while understanding what the heck is going on – and that my friends is tough. She also give a great definition on the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. And yep, there’s a difference ;)

09. Turning the Big 4-0 and more! Talking about my health goals and teaching my daughters positive body image
Hey friends, welcome to a bonus episode. I wanted to hide the fact that I am turning 40 today. Ugh, it is like the icing for a crappy year. And maybe I shouldn’t be all down in the dumps but there is something about turning this age for me. It sounds old, and yet I still feel like I am 25 . . .
I have some ah-ha moments I want to share.
Looking back 10 years ago, I'm not 100% sure but guessing, that when I turned 30 my health goals were something like lose those last 10 pounds from baby #2 or obtaining a number on the scale before I had babies. The number on the scale equaled my worth which is really sad to say but I think it is a common goal for many woman no matter how old you are.
I also talk about a little discussion I had with my daughter as my teenager calls me out and says, "Mom you are always telling us to say positive things about our bodies, why don’t you say it too?"
Whoa! And what do I say about myself when I may not always feel super positive? How do we teach our young girls positive body image. This is a tough one.
Body positivity or body self love is not just a switch you can turn on or just make a pretty post that says “love your body” this concept is way more involved for it to even be one sentence.
So, I would love for you to celebrate with me and join me on this episode.

My long time friend, Jamie and I share a common passion in our lives for moving more to make our bodies feel better. However, we know that mom life is a bit off-schedule and getting a workout doesn't always happen - and that is 100% okay!

She has kept on this path for 15 years and I think that says quite a bit about her fire for the health and wellness field. After baby number three, she is showing up on social media and building her brand of health and wellness. We talk all things from motherhood to these times during this pandemic to post pregnancy and of course all things fitness.Finding time to fit in a time for yourself to move or pair it with your kiddos activities

07: You & Exercise: Finding joy, consistency and stepping up your game
Getting in shape is usually the first thing a person will or want to focus on when they say “I need to lose weight” or "That's it! I’m starting my diet on Monday.” And even though excise is wonderful, I will put a disclaimer that if your main goal is weight loss, moving more may help but it comes down to the food – okay – we will talk more about that later but first let’s talk fitness.
Making exercise a consistent habit may be something you may or may not struggle with but through this little discussion I hope to give a few tips that might help you wherever you are at in your fitness journey.

This plan gradually steps up your fitness level for all you steady exercisers out there AND it is the perfect way to start to for all you beginners out there. 06: Adding More Plants at the Dinner Table
Today, she shares her family’s journey to adapting a vegetarian lifestyle. Now, if you are not interested in following a vegetarian diet, that’s totally okay, but maybe you want to try meatless Mondays or simply find more ways to add veggies to your family dinners – and most importantly making them taste delicious without the whine, and by whine I mean the complaints from the rest of the family. Bring on the red wine and enjoy our discussion on finding more ways to eat more plants.
We have a lot of fun on this episode and I keep laughing as she says she eats about four cups of beans a day, that would not work for me but join us as she provides simple recipes, tips and more that work for her and hopefully you get a couple takeaways for yourself!

I adore her work on both her sites. She writes effortlessly at www.rootandbloomforever.com, providing her baking expertise and inspiring women in all realms of life.

I am no food scientist and not sure where to start with this concept and that is why I called Mary. She provides mind-engaging STEM activities with helpful tips to get started, from adding pH paper, a lab notebook and simple questions to ask your kids to get them thinking about what is going on with the food.
