2022 Fascia Research Congress Update #1

2022 Fascia Research Congress Teaser

"This is How Science Drives Itself" with Helene Langevin, Neil Theise, Antonio Stecco, Lauri Nemetz, and Rebecca Pratt
Back in April I was at the 2022 Experimental Biology Conference in Philadelphia, and recorded a podcast there with Helene Langevin, Neil Theise, Antonio Stecco, Lauri Nemetz, and Rebecca Pratt. If you missed it you can listen to it here. But something else happened too, and this is that something else. After the formal presentation and Q&A were over, a number of people came up to ask those assembled additional questions. At some point in dawned on me that I was missing recording some great stuff, so I turned on my phone and slipped it onto to the conference table. What you hear today on BodyTalk is the result of that. The audio is as good as I could realize it, the volume is consistent and clear. I did have to substitute my voice for the guests who were commenting and questioning, as they did not know they were being recorded.
So sit back and enjoy as 2 of our top scientist/thinkers ideate in real time, on this special episode of BodyTalk.

Superficial to Deep – Dermal Fascial Regeneration with Paul Mettler
Dr. Paul Mettler has been practicing physical therapy for 40 years. When he began working as a physical therapist, he was often frustrated and discouraged by the lack of functional improvement and long-term results of my patients using the standard myofascial, physical or manipulation therapies. Dr. Mettler discovered a way to rapidly identify and undo the damage caused by the inflammatory process in 1991. He originated a manual physical therapy method, to restructure (or restore) the scar tissue that connects injured tissue without causing further injury. This innovative technique originally called the Mettler Release Technique® or MRT® has been successfully used on over 20,000 patients over the past 25 years. Dr. Mettler decided to rename the technique to Dermal-Fascial Restoration® or DFR® in 2018 as technology had advanced to image restoration of the skin and fascia. Using High Frequency Shear Wave Elastography imaging, DFR has been shown to reduce skin and fascial stiffness. Drs. Mettler and Schroder presented these findings atthe Fourth International Fascia Research Congress in 2015 and it was awarded 2nd place for clinical usefulness. Dr. Mettler was awarded the winning poster at the 2022 ICMT conference. He has been accepted to do an oral presentation at the 2022 Fascia Research Congress in Montreal, Canada.
DFR, in combination with other therapies, can provide outstanding long-term relief from symptoms such as chronic muscle aching and stiffness, limited joint mobility, post – op surgical scars and stiffness and other symptoms by rapidly restoring the health and circulation of the affected area without creating further injury.
We have an epidemic of chronic pain with addiction to pain medication. Many of my patients, colleagues and the greater medical community need to further invest in DFR evaluation and treatment. We feel it is very important to the assessment and treatment in overall management of musculoskeletal impairments. It is drug-free, non-invasive and cost-effective manual therapy with proven results for prevention and treatment of a wide range of injuries.
We have created a number of in depth presentations for DFR over the years, and through them you will get a deep look at the DFR program, starting with the science. We are excited to announce our 2022-2023 DFR Therapy IPTA approval for 14 CE (6 on-line and 8 hands-on) visit us for more info at dfrtherapy.com
Specialties: orthopedic/neuro-musculoskelatal injuries, sports injuries and MSK injury prevention

Inner Inquiries with Helene Langevin, Neil Theise, Antonio Stecco, Lauri Nemetz, and Rebecca Pratt
I recently had the opportunity to sit with this amazing panel of people: Helene Langevin, Neil Theise, Antonio Stecco, Lauri Nemetz, and Rebecca Pratt. We talked about fascia, the interstitium, hyaluronan, the lymphatic system and what we most need to move the profession forward in both arenas of research and practice. This was recorded Live at the 2022 Experimental Biology Conference so it sounds different that usual, but we worked hard to make it as clear as possible (though you might need to turn up the volume) This one is so good I just know you're going. to want to listen to it more than once!

Fascia Update – FR:EIA Unveiled at BodyWorlds
Join me. online of course for the Unveiling of FR:EIA – the World’s first 3-D Human Fascia Focused Plastinate on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at 6:00 pm CET (9:00am PST, 12:00noon EST, 5:00pm UK time) LIVE from the Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS Museum in Berlin, German.
register for FREE: https://us06web.zoom.us/.../reg.../WN_fl1edf5KTKyQf6b8gQVUAA
More about FR:EIA – Fascia Reveled: Educating Interconnected Anatomy
The field of fascia research has undergone remarkable expansion and growth in the last decade, which is shaping the progression of many related fields. In order to further support fascia anatomy education, the imaging of fascia has also been expanding, but until now a true visualization has been a challenge.
Based on this, the teams behind the BODY WORLDS Exhibitions and the Fascia Research Society joined forces to create an interdisciplinary team with the lofty goal to produce a full body plastinate, revealing the entire human fascial net, three-dimensionally. The result of this ambitious three-year project is the successful creation of the world’s first 3-D human fascia plastinate titled FR:EIA (Fascia Revealed: Educating Interconnected Anatomy). FR:EIA will become the new attraction and an integral part of the permanent collection at the BODY WORLDS Museum in Berlin.
The minds behind the project and leading protagonists of the two organizations, Dr. Vladimir Chereminskiy and Gary Carter, are excited to reveal the first fascial focused whole-body plastinate, to the world. They will talk about the obstacles they faced and benefits now available through this unique specimen for medical and anatomical education. Dr. Robert Schleip, world-known fascia researcher and scientist, and Rachelle Clauson, fascia expert and author, will moderate this special online event. Don’t miss it!

Of Mice and Massage with Dr. Bo Ri Seo
You know those people who say you can't change tissue? Well I'm I am absolutely geeked to have Dr Bo Ri Seo as my guest today and she's going to explain otherwise. She is the lead writer on of the most exciting papers I've read this year. I talked about on Episode 30, and now she's here on BodyTalk. You're going to love what she has to say!
Massage doesn’t just make muscles feel better, it makes them heal faster and stronger
Dr. Bo Ri Seo is a biomedical engineer who has been studying mechanobiology and mechanotherapy to develop therapeutic strategies for cancer and tissue regeneration. Her research interests are in tissue microenvironment engineering and regenerative immunoengineering. Her recent work has focused on understanding the immunoregulatory roles of mechanical loading on improving skeletal muscle regeneration as well as the impacts of physicochemical cues in stem cell division at a single cell level as a postdoctoral research fellow at Dr. David Mooney’s group at Harvard University and Wyss Institute of Biologically Inspired Engineering. Prior to joining Mooney group at Harvard, Dr. Seo received her bachelor’s degree from Korea University in Seoul, South Korea, and obtained her doctoral degree under the mentorship of Dr. Claudia Fischbach in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University. She recently joined Takeda as research scientist.

Finding Better Footing with James Earls
James Earls is a bodyworker and functional movement therapist. His passion is to bring a true and deep understanding of functional anatomy to therapists of all forms. James has written two books, ‘Born to Walk’ and ‘Understanding the Human Foot’ both of which put anatomy into context of normal, real-life movement.
James has been a bodyworker for longer than he would rather say but David will let you know within the first 5 seconds of this podcast. As James has no kids to homeschool and no particularly healthy hobbies to keep him occupied during lockdown he decided to write another book which he is happy to shamelessly plug during this hour of rather rambling but ever so interesting chat with your gracious host DAVID LESONDAK!

The Cadaverist – with Lauri Nemetz
Happy Halloween! Welcome to an encore presentation of my discussion with Lauri Nemetz about what it's like to work in a human cadaver lab!
As some medical schools move away from dissection and towards virtual imaging to discover the inner reality of the body, many manual therapists, yoga teachers, and somatic therapists of all kinds are kicking it old school – by learning about anatomy and challenging themselves in cadaver labs. Adjunct Associate Professor at Pace University, master dissector, dance and yoga teacher Lauri Nemetz and I share tales from the lab and the lessons we learn about life when we study the dead.
Laurice (Lauri) D. Nemetz, MA, BC-DMT, LCAT, ERYT500, C-IAYT
Lauri is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Pace University since 2004 and the 2020 President’s Award Honoree for Outstanding Contribution, a licensed Creative Arts Therapist, a member of the American Association for Anatomy, a board-certified member of the Academy of Dance/Movement Therapists, past President of the YTA (Yoga Teachers Association), a certified yoga teacher at the 500-hour level, a Stott Pilates instructor, certified yoga therapist (CIAYT), former faculty and dissector assistant for Anatomy Trains. Currently she is a dissector with several projects including the Fascial Net Plastination Project and KNM Labs, a joint project with Leslie Kaminoff. She has exhibited her artwork internationally with themes of anatomy and movement and also kayak guides on occasion! She is ever curious and enjoys sparking conversation and new ways of thinking and moving. Her forthcoming book, The Myofascial System in Form and Movement will be published by Handspring Publishing in 2022.

Unpacking Back Pain with Linda Wheatland Smith
I met Linda working on the ICMT Conference, and I'm happy to have her on the pod this week as we discuss low back pain. She's a chiropractor and then some. Also, you're going to want to listen to the very end for a big surprise!
The ICMT Conference and webinar
Dr. Linda Wheatland Smith is a chiropractor and certified acupuncturist. She is a 1982 graduate of Logan University and has been in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri for 39 years. She has post-graduate training in the diagnosis and treatment of muscular imbalances from Washington University School of Physical Therapy.
Dr. Smith has taught at the graduate and post-graduate levels for Logan University, St. Louis University School of Medicine, and Washington University School of Physical Therapy. She has presented programs to Logan UNiversity's Spring Symposium and The Institute for Functional Medicine’s International Conference. Dr. Smith is the coauthor of two case studies in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine: Spontaneous Vertebral Artery Dissection Preempting Spinal Manipulative Therapy: A Patient Presenting With Neck Pain and Headache for Chiropractic Care and A Case Report of an Intermuscular Lipoma: presentation, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis.
Dr. Smith has focused her practice on the comprehensive management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. She is compelled by the challenge of interrupting the cycle of repeated incidents of acute back pain with non-pharmacologic methods of care. She has developed an integrated, effective, and efficient protocol based on current research and clinical experience for managing these common and expensive conditions.

More than Doshas – Ayurvedic Medicine with Kerry Harling
Kerry Harling
Ayurveda Practitioner, Yoga Teacher, and Ayurvedic Marma Therapist
Kerry’s ethos as a health professional is that health is NOT one size fits all. Each of us is unique, and as such require individualized treatment. Her philosophy on health and medicine began when, as part of her graduate studies, she observed the effects of environmental toxins on human health — toxins which left patients with a myriad of symptoms that didn’t have a specific diagnosis. She has since dedicated her life to developing an integrative approach to medicine that combines the individualized approach of Ayurveda with the benefits of modern technology, such as genetics. By combining the wisdom of eastern medicine with the breakthroughs of western technology, she is able to create wellness plans for her patients that are personalized down to the molecular level.
Kerry has a B.S. in Neuroscience, a Masters in Education, and has studied at The Kripalu School For Ayurveda and the world renowned Ayurveda Institute. She is the CEO of The Holistic Highway, where she helps her clients achieve optimal health through customized health services and programs. She also has a practice at The University Of Pittsburgh’s Center For Integrative Medicine, runs the Ayurveda Sanctuary nationally, is a registered practitioner with the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA), member of Yoga Alliance, and the owner of the TEDx Talk, "Context Is Everything."
