My Firefox Setup - Part One: Tabs, Bookmarks, and Organization | DC Tech Talks Podcast
I've hopped browsers a lot in the last few months and I've finally settled on exclusively using Firefox (or derivatives) on all my devices. In a series of posts, I'm going to share how I have my instances of Firefox configured and how it is a better browser for getting real work done.

Streaming at home with NDI and virtual cams for family fun | DC Tech Talks Podcast
I’ve used OBS for a long time for game and screen recording. I was well aware that was barely scratching the surface of what it can do. Yet, that’s basically all I needed it for, mostly for screen recording training videos. I never had a reason to go deeper into OBS, but now I’ve spent my entire vacation learning deep diving after running some fun experiments based on ideas I had while watching a few of my favorite streamers. In particular, virtual cams and NDI streaming.

That S5e mid-range tablet life - My best computer | DC Tech Talks Podcast
Okay, this is gonna sound funny. But at the middle of my tech stack is my tablet. This may not be how you want to use it, however for me its the center of the universe. My tablet needs to be able to do everything. Its the only device that bridges all my machines and is the link that connects them all.
This is a truncated version on how I pull it off and why I love it.

The Best Tech of 2020 - A New Mindset on Ownership | DC Tech Talks Podcast
My thoughts on the best tech of 2020.
There will be lots of lists that are nothing but affiliate links. This post is about the people and projects that enable us to truly own digital items, not leasing like we do with Google Drive, Spotify, and Netflix.

Giving Anbox Android emulator a shot
After seeing the news of a new Ubuntu-based distro using /e/ OS app store, my interest was piqued about running Android apps on my desktop. Having recently played around with screen mirroring on my Pop_OS desktop, running the apps directly seems like a much better experience.

The Economic Need for Replaceable Batteries | DC Tech Talks Podcast
There are plenty of reasons to make this accessible for more users, from environmental to economic. I realized after repairing my daughters Honor 7x, that I now have three devices in use after battery replacements, all of them repaired for a combined cost of $60.
Repairing my daughter's phone only cost $15. Imagine the benefit so many people could have when a repair costs a fraction of a new device and the manufacturer wasn’t conspiring against you to block this process. This is even more evident now as millions of people are out of work just like me, looking to save every penny they can.

Video, content, and RSS - The need for curation | DC Tech Talks Podcast
Earlier, Flipboard announced a $3/month subscription (coming soon) to curate public video into a single feed. What I really want is a way to easily consolidate YouTube, feeds, newsletters, and podcasts into a single source. Unfortunately, this Flipboard subscription is a good idea, too lost in its own ego, justifying the “algorithm” over allowing indie curators and creators to build their own audiences.
The sad truth is that this could have been a reality, if RSS was treated as an important feature of the open web. Instead, modern content is all about the platform, not content.

The Bliss of /e/ OS – The UnGoogled Android | DC Tech Talks Podcast - Ep. 38
One of the biggest factors I take into consideration before purchasing an Android phone is if it is supported by 3rd. party ROM’s. Previously I’ve run devices without Google Apps after installing LineageOS, which had significant speed and battery performance in addition to privacy upgrades. Last week I installed /e/ OS on my Honor 5x after stumbling on it on Twitter. There’s a few aspects of this really unique OS that I feel merit a test for anyone who has a supported device.
The /e/ operating system isn’t just a custom ROM. They’ve developed an integrated ecosystem of default apps to replace typical Google services along with utilizing MicroG framework to help more apps work without access to Google Play Services.
This isn’t a full review of the OS, but my initial takeaways of what might be the most interesting attempt at a non-Google Linux mobile OS and something I think I’m going to stick with for the long run.

Nostalgia and Rose-Colored Glasses for Blackberry
On the blog this week was… Admitting my continued love of Blackberry and if physical keyboards on phones are worth it. Blog is on ObscuredNarration.com right now. This podcast allows me to go deeper on this topic.
For some time, I’ve been fixated on finding the right mobile device for me. A device that’s curated just for my use case, not a black slab of glass that is just a notification vehicle. In my heart I thought this was a device with a physical keyboard. Thinking of this I fondly remember my days as a Blackberry Curve user and how much I loved that phone. But now, I’m not so sure if I wanted it for getting more work done, or if my rose-colored nostalgia for the early days of smartphones.
This podcast has undergone a lot of changes and big gaps in publishing, I recognize that. I tried to cover the news and that just set me up for failure. I follow news closely but I’m not a reporter. Instead of a podcast this will be more of a journal (which is what I changed my blog into as well). I need a place to talk about the random tech shenanigans I’m up to, what I’m learning and what’s rolling around in my brain. This isn’t what’s always at the top of the news cycle. Sometimes the news might trigger it.
I dislike where tech is going. Often “tech enthusiasts” are just people who know how to use a laptop or phone and just does the things the company that makes it tells them to do. When they run into a problem, they just look for another app to fix it. These are the same people that wait for huge keynotes so the company can tell them how to use the device and what new apps will fix their life’s problems.
Budget tech is about biggest bang for your buck. Its about making things last longer. Its about finding solutions, using critical thinking to find and build your own solutions. Its about fixing things yourself, not subscribing to Apple Care

DC Talks Podcast Daily - Going mobile without the console - May 7, 2019
After much internal debate I pulled the trigger on a mobile device for my increasing travel. This is the normal process for me:
- Pick out the most expensive device and slowly talk myself out of it.
- Research the hell out of a used device and never purchase
This time there's a third step in which I actually bought a device! For people on a tight budget spending any money is covered in several layers of guilt. It was incredibly important to me to get a device that covered 90% of my usecase which is why I chose this device for mobile gaming, media, podcasts and more...

DC Talks Podcast Daily - Standing Up for Human Cashiers - May 6, 2019
Week off after traveling for my 9-5 but right back to the deep news and today is all about Walmart and their new A.I. store. This video is all about context and how having cashiers who understand human context.
I'm not much of a fan of the Amazon Go cashier-less store but this new concept from Walmart sounds much better. Human to human interaction is what makes or breaks businesses. If you don't trust your people and want to replace them with machines, the problem isn't with your employees... Its management.

DC Talks Podcast Daily - It's time to switch... To Firefox - April 23, 2019
The browser wars are back! Firefox rescued the internet from the Internet Explorer takeover in the early aughts. Now its time for it to return and fight the new browswer... Chromium. With everyone making a Bling/V8 browser, from Brave to Edge and Opera, its time you take a look at Firefox again.
Its a good thing Firefox is also the best browser on the planet right now. In today's episode I share my love for the feisty browser, its test pilot projects and a fork or two.

DC Talks Podcast Daily - What a Week for Linux - April 18, 2019
I have been sick all week and it was best that I didn't subject you to my nasally voice. But there was so much tech stuff happening this week, particularly around my favorite tech thing... Linux! Between a Linux Tech Tip video for gaming, Lutris with a new release and even baking the Nvidia proprietary driver right into the Ubuntu 19.04 installer this was a big week for Linux and gaming.
I take this opportunity to go deeper on what I think the Linux desktop is great at and how it can weave its way further into the PC's and desks for gamers and more.

DC Talks Podcast Daily - How Portable is Your Data - April 10, 2019
Since the Google Stadia announcement, Google has been ripped for its lack of long-term support for its products. Its clear for me that its not if a product dies but if its data is portable. How easy is it to move to a new service? This isn't exclusive to Google, but the myriad of cloud hosted service providers that try to lock you in.
The question is... Do you own your stack?

DC Talks Podcast Daily - DNA Companies Working With The FBI: That's How They Get You - April 9, 2019
Yesterday's silliness about getting Taco Bell delivered during a fire alarm was fun but today is a serious topic. In this episode of the DC Talks Daily podcast I give my opinion about DNA services working with the FBI and the possible implications.
This is my opinion, however it doesn't mean I think I'm right. Based on the information I know this is my stance as of today. I'm willing to keep an open mind, join me in the conversation?

DC Talks Podcast Daily - High School, Taco Bell & Postmates: A Tech Story - April 8, 2019
After a successful setup of my music streaming server over the weekend I instead detail an amazing story from my local high school. If you had to stand outside for hours during a fire alarm, would you be BRAZEN enough to order Postmates? My daughters high school pulled it off and is one of the many reasons why I believe in the next generation.

DCTP Daily - Weekend Project Time!
Its the end of the week for the podcast and I want to start a new trend. From now on each Thursday I'm going to offer a weekend project to complete. This could be setting up a new server or doing something IRL. Each week this is a chance to come up with something fun to do and a reason to experiment.
This week my offering is to set up a self-hosted music streaming server. In my old man rant against paid streaming like Spotify, the only way out is to build my own... With blackjack and hookers.

DCTP Daily - Being indifferent to specific walled gardens
Exclusives for gaming has been a thing for a long time. Although I've been hard on walled gardens all week I'm kinda soft on gaming exclusives. In this episode I really try to convince myself gaming exclusives are bad but for me I'm already on an exclusive... Steam.
Valve has given Linux gaming so much goodwill I really fight to find a problem with other exclusives. At least we got it better than OSX!

DCTP Daily - The Worst Kind of Exclusives
You know what the absolute worst scenario is for exclusives? When both subscriptions and hardware are paired to make the ultimate pain in the ass. In this episode I express my fears of what could happen with Apple's new News+ service gets exclusives that are locked to their hardware in addition to their service.
Its time I play a little conspiracy theorist!

DCTP Daily - Going All In on Self-Hosted Chat
After SEVERAL weeks of being on a hiatus (finally wrapped the Miami Vice podcast!) I'm back with more hot takes and permanently back for these daily podcasts. To kick things off this week I spent some time over the weekend really thinking about Brian Acton's advice to delete Facebook and really look at my reliance on their apps. Naturally, this lead me to review my usage of WhatsApp and how to diversify myself away from the FAANG services.
Over the weekend I took some time to set up a XMPP/Jabber server with great success! This was a fun way to experiment and I think I'm going to stick with the self-hosted chat, that was incredibly easy to set up.

9 - Making Responsible Decisions
All this talk about saving money, owning physical media and finding free ways to stream has me thinking about making budget decisions. Sometimes we feel shame when we have to cut our budget so deep, but its okay. You're making the right decision.
In this short episode I discuss how I feel when I've made that decision before and how to still feel connected to the modern world.

Give me discs or give me death!
Following up from our conversations last week I take a look at the classic question: Physical or streaming? For me, which is a personal choice, its physical media. In this episode I defend my position but still see why streaming is so popular.
The key in all of it is everyone is allowed to make their own choice. I've gone extended periods without access to the internet, so owning physical copies of things is my preferred method. To each their own...

7 - The humble library
Everyone is busy signing up for streaming services and buying ebooks they’ll never read. You know who’s got your back? The library. You know who doesn’t judge you? The library. You know where its cool to hang out on the weekend with free wifi? The mother-freaking library.
If you haven’t been to the library in a few years, its time to go back. Aside from magical tomes that make you imagine shit that’s not real (books really are magic) they also have DVD’s and Blu-Rays. Plus, many have partnered with services that offer streaming music and movies for free. Of course, just about every library works with the Overdrive app (which you can sideload to a $30 Amazon Fire tablet, the cheapest of all devices) with will let you download ebooks and audiobooks.

6 - You Know its free, it has Alf
More and more places are giving away free TV shows and movies as an ad-supported service including IMDB, Roku, Pluto TV (who got recently acquired) and even Plex.
Today I'm taking a look at the high level view of these services and what it means to people without a bank account or credit card. I'm also extremely skeptical of Plex's decision to get into this game. Is there a conflict of interest adding commercial services and a way to host your maybe-illegal personal collection of DVD's?

5 - It's the whole point of cable
Hi pals, I am on the road today so I have a road show. Being on the road has me thinking about streaming services including the plethora of options, cost and of course the KonMari effect on owning versus streaming. All of that is coming up this week.
Today I'm taking a deeper look at subscription fatigue. With every service having their own subscriptions and trying to watch everything, should you reconsider signing up for traditional cable?
Also, are you even a cord cutter? In my opinion, cable replacement services doesn't qualify you for the cord cutting club.

4 - Where are all the feature phones?
Last episode of the week and today we're looking at feature phones. Across the world there are many versions of feature phones but its mysteriously difficult to find one here in the US. There are lots of flip phones and even a few Android Go devices.
Could a sub-$50 feature phone with Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram be useful to people? I think there's a huge market segment that manufacturers are missing out on.

3 - Smarten up my dumb house
At CES there were a number of home assistant devices announced. What caught my eye were devices that adapted dumb devices and added smart assistants.
Today lets discuss how these adapters can make it easier for more people to adopt the tech, get comfortable with it and reduce the amount of obsolete products.

2 - I love Stories and this is where to put them
Stories were all the rage in 2018. They showed up on all Facebook properties (take that Snapchat!), Skype (don't worry, they're gone now) and even YouTube.
Stories have a place on social media, they're just not being used in the right places. Today I make the case for Stories on Twitter and in group chats.

1 - Read your text messages, you animals
After more than a year away, I'm back with my first podcast episode. This show will air 4x/week (Mon. - Thurs.).
To kick off the week lets talk about how many unread text messages y'all have. I toss around a few ideas why there are so many unread notifications on people's screens and try to get to the root of the problem.
