21: Sarah Bulford - On Quitting Her Dream Job As A BC Park Ranger, Marketing, Art, Motocross, & More
21: Sarah Bulford - On Quitting Her Dream Job As A BC Park Ranger, Marketing, Art, Motocross, & More
My guest today is Sarah Bulford. I first became aware of Sarah while scrolling through Instagram and an article popped up while I was browsing titled, ‘Why I Quit My Dream Job’. Intrigued, I clicked and read this story written by Sarah which chronicles her working towards and attaining her DREAM JOB of becoming a Park Ranger in the national parks of beautiful British Columbia, Canada...and then what it was actually like. She vividly describes the harsh dualities of what happens when you combine over-tourism and a misallocation of support resources.
Now, my wife and I are from the prairies, and we recently moved to Penticton, British Columbia at the beginning of 2020. One of the reasons Why we moved was due to our draw of the mountains. British Columbia has some of the most spectacular nature in the world. The national parks are amazing, jaw-dropping, and absolutely breath-taking. My family are not the only ones...and when I read Sarah’s accurate depiction of what her experience was like. I felt a wave of emotions (similar as much as they could be...to what I imagined hers were and are). I was angry. I was disappointed. I was disgusted, pissed off, and left to wonder ‘what can be done...and what can I do? The first thing that came to mind was ‘well I have to share her story. Let her voice be heard. Listen to her and engage in a dialogue that is extremely important.’ We must do better to preserve, protect, respect, and live WITH nature. We must work towards being part of the solution, not the problem. I highly recommend you read Sarah’s story (which is hyperlinked in the description of this episode) and thank you Sarah for having the courage to share it.
In addition, Sarah is also known as Mountaindarlin on social media (Instagram: @Mountaindarlin) and is at the time of recording, supported by Klimwomen, GoPro, Redbull, Arcteryx, and DPSkis) and resides in Squamish BC! Her lifestyle is (in my opinion) totally amazing. She ski’s/rock-climbs/ has recently got into motocross and can be found ripping a dirt bike or plummeting down a ski slope in her spare time. For the last 7 years, she volunteered with the very busy Squamish Search and Rescue. She pays for her hobbies by working in marketing (Mountaindarlin Media - offering social media growth services) and selling watercolor art (Adveniredesigns.com) on the side. You can connect with her at www.mountaindarlin.com or on Instagram).
This episode is packed with goodies and takeaways as we go over her story and talk about environmentalism, art, marketing, BC, motocross, and more. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation with Sarah.

17 - Robert Borgersen on Teaching Through COVID-19, Personal Finance and The Importance of Your Why
17 - Robert Borgersen on Teaching Through COVID-19, Personal Finance and The Importance of Your Why
"Your why for the first year of university could be, 'I want to get a better idea of what I like, and I want to absolutely kill these courses I'm taking even though I don't like them...You will develop grit, staying power (aka discipline), learn how to study and write an essay perhaps for the first time in your life, etc. These skills will benefit you for the entirety of your life." - Robert Borgersen
"It's hard to turn a stopped ship. If you are a ship moving, all you have to do is make a rutter adjustment and you can change course. If the ship is stopped, you can make all the rutter adjustments you like...you won't go anywhere different." - Robert Borgersen
Robert Borgersen is a Mathematics Professor at the University of Manitoba. Actually, he was my second Applied Finite Mathematics prof when I attended U of M (I was 17) because I failed the first time with a different prof. A big reason why I passed the second time around was due to Rob's teaching style, communication, and approach. Thanks Rob :)
In this episode we chat about:
Rob's journey to becoming a Math Prof
COVID-19 impacts on education (from a prof's perspective)
How to be successful in post-secondary education whether taking in-person or virtual courses
Possible adjustments to online learning that would benefit students (ie increased # of tests...)
The importance of volunteering
Finding your why BEFORE going to university
However, the real meat and potatoes of this episode are when we dive into money. In Rob's spare time/on the side, he started up a business called We Pay Off Debt which focuses on personal finance support and making a difference in people's lives financially. His personal finance journey includes:
Paid off $41k in debt in about 18 months.
Built up a $21,000 emergency fund
Starting to put money towards retirement and kids education fund
Also, we talk about the importance of not having a credit card as it relates to getting out and paying down debt. At the time of recording, the Borgersen's are paying down their mortgage. Hopefully, Rob and I will do a round 2 because I want to talk to him about the order of this...and why it is important. A key point here I want to highlight is that he and his wife did all of this WITHOUT making any substantial raises. He did go out and make more money but only because they wanted to pay off more debt.
A bit extra info on Rob. He was one of those kids who knew what he wanted to be when he grew up (in his case, a Math teacher). He did his Masters in Mathematics and has been teaching since 2005. He teaches typically 6 courses per year and spends 80% of his work-time actually teaching (we dive into other professors 'scenarios' in this episode in terms of what time is spent towards teaching and research).
Lastly, for the first time on my podcast, this episode has freebie’s available for anyone listening to this episode. Check out www.wepayoffdebt.ca/dean for a couple of freebies associated with financial support.

VLOG 1 - Dean Douglas on The Value of Volunteering, Creating, Learning & Starting A Business
VLOG 1 - Dean Douglas on The Value of Volunteering, Creating, Learning & Starting A Business
Hi Folks,
As mentioned in the intro of this episode, I’ve been experimenting with multiple tiny projects and back on Apr 29, 2020 I did my first VLOG where I recorded a short video 10-20 minutes of me talking and sharing thoughts that have been on my mind lately. Why am I doing this?
Getting comfortable being uncomfortable and putting myself out there more (digitally)
The process of vocalizing internal thoughts I think will be beneficial and probably externalize or actualize internally what I might be thinking of and pondering
COVID19 coping strategy
Possibly network or connect with others
If this benefits anyone as well throughout the process, great!
4 suggestions covered in this episode:
Volunteer for an organization that you connect with (small/med/large businesses, non/for-profits)
Create something (anything)…ex: podcast, art, hand write letters and mail them to people, social media post or attend to a part of your business that has been neglected or put off for some time
Register/signup of free online courses (ie Harvard Business School CS50: Introduction to Computer Science)
Start a business As mentioned in the video, I’m going through the process of building a business at the moment. It’s going to be called Douglas Marketing Inc and will talk more about this tomorrow
If you like this VLOG and want more hit SUBSCRIBE on my YouTube channel, on whichever podcast platform you listen on.
Questions related to this episode (COMMENT BELOW):
Which organization would you like to connect with and why?
What did you create today (not what are you going to create)…?
Which online course are you going to take and why?
What business would you like to start and why?

12 - Kiirsten May on The Proximity Paradox, Entrepreneurship, Storytelling, Marketing & More
12 - Kiirsten May on The Proximity Paradox, Entrepreneurship, Storytelling, Marketing & More
Kiirsten May is the co-owner of UpHouse, a marketing agency based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her and her business partner, Alex Varricchio, opened UpHouse in 2017 with a focus on supporting in-house marketers. Kiirsten describes UpHouse as, 'Rather than being a full-service agency that does everything, we like to get involved in the brand and strategy side and then support whatever our clients' needs are. For example, whether that's being there to provide video support, an extra set of hands for launching a product or digital marketing support until an agency hires in-house, etc)'. Fun fact, the average age of UpHouse team members is 30. This IS the next-gen that are leading the way in all aspects of marketing.
A note of context worth mentioning, we recorded this episode back in Feb 2020, and am posting it live in May 2020. I bring this up because the world has changed a lot in this short time due to COVID-19 and one of the main topics we discuss is Kiirsten and Alex's book that launched at the end of March. Titled The Proximity Paradox: How to Create Distance from Business as Usual and Do Something Truly Innovative is about this idea that the closer you are to a challenge, the harder it is to look at it creatively or to find an innovative way to solve it.
I recently finished this book and it is brilliant. With respect to what I just shared and the current times, I highly recommend and encourage people this book. Even though the book is targeted towards marketers, entrepreneurs, business owners as well as students (particularly in entrepreneurship or marketing) I would also add leaders in any field, and given the current state of our world with relation to COVID-19, there is a lot of innovation going on right now so I would suggest that if you are innovating, pick up this book.
In this conversation, we talk about marketing, branding, culture, corporate responsibility, social media, the importance of story-telling, writing, and much more.

10 - Noah Palansky and Avi Stoller on Revolutionary Marketing, Innovation, Partnerships, AI & More
10 - Noah Palansky and Avi Stoller on Revolutionary Marketing, Innovation, Partnerships, AI & More
Noah Palansky (LinkedIn) and Avi Stoller (LinkedIn) are two of the three cofounders of TAIV (pronounced "tave") a Winnipeg-based tech start-up company that is revolutionizing the way traditional TV advertising is displayed inside businesses. If you're a business owner (small, medium, or large) that has TVs playing for your customers then this product is perfect for you. TAIV allows businesses to advertise what THEY want during commercial breaks at a fraction of the cost...and that's an understatement.
In this episode, we talk about entrepreneurship, marketing, the importance of relationships, personal hardships that both Noah/Avi have faced in the past to get to where they're at, and much more.
Here's a brief bio of each:
Noah worked in marketing for a software company that helped people with intellectual disabilities. He shares what he found to be the best Return On Investment (ROI) which was not doing the traditional forms of marketing but something else. Noah also had the unfortunate experience of losing his mom to a rare form of cancer while he was only a teenager. This tragic event inspired him to take action and actually make a difference by starting to fundraise money for cancer research. At 14, he started a foundation called Kids Count which aims to provide kids affected by cancer who want to take action by offering them training, tools, and support. To date (and this podcast was recorded in 2019) they've helped roughly 30 kids raise over $800,000 and their goal is to hit $1,000,000. You can also reach out to Noah on LinkedIn to learn more and get involved.
Avi wanted to be a doctor out of high school and ventured into a biochemistry degree. After a turn of events (which is better told by him in this episode), he was able to dig himself out of a low place and eventually ended up partnering with Noah where he is currently the Director of Business Development at TAIV.
I want to take a moment to thank both Avi and Noah for sharing their stories (both the highs and lows).

9 - Gerard Freeman on Australia, USA, Canada, Environmental Science, Social Media, Banking & More
I have had the pleasure of knowing Gerard (pronounced Jared...that's right! Jared) Freeman for a couple years and each conversation we've ever had has been extremely enjoyable, as you can quickly tell from this one. Born in Hobart, Tasmania he spent the first 4 years of his life there before moving to Currie, King Island and then to Scone, New South Wales. He's also lived in Newcastle, New South Wales, London, Ontario and at the time of recording, resides in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He has an Environmental Science Degree which we talk briefly about.
Personally, I find Australians some of the most fun and interesting people to hang out with. In this episode we bounce around and chat about many topics including: Rural and urban life, environment science, life in Australia vs Canada and the U.S.A., alternative banking options, social media and its effects on society and much more.

6 - Frank Veert on Becoming a Dealer Principal/General Manager By 25, Ambition, Inspiration & More
My guest this episode is Frank Veert. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Frank for a few years and we recently had the chance to sit down and talk about his story and what a story he has. I’m actually not going to say much for an intro this time because we just dive right into it at the beginning of the episode. The only thing I will say, is that Frank (at the time of this recording) is the Dealer Principle/General Manager of Eastern Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram…and he’s only 25. This episode is chalked full of inspiration and awesome takeaways so I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

5 - Samantha Walters on Changing Careers From Acting to Speech Language Pathology and More
5 - Samantha Walters on Changing Careers From Acting to Speech Language Pathology and More
"If you don't like the restaurant...leave!" - Samantha Walters
My guest today is my good friend Samantha Walters. Sam is an actor who has worked professionally in Manitoba's theatre and film industry and is also a Speech-Language Pathologist, which as you can imagine gave us a lot to talk about. In this episode, she shares her journey which is packed full of stories, experiences, and life-lessons. She has a 4 year Major in Theatre and Film from the University of Winnipeg where she focused on the Performance for Stage side of the program. At the end of her acting degree, she did Canada's National Voice Intensive program which is six-weeks where you learn the power of voice and speech. At the time it was in Vancouver, now it is in Toronto and is designed for artists/actors etc. She also has a Masters degree of Clinical Science for Speech-Language Pathology which she received from the University of Western Ontario in London, On.
As a kid, Sam asked a lot of questions and was a curious child (which I believe is one of the strengths that has helped her continuously grow over the years and assist in carving out her path). She was involved in dance, gymnastics, figure skating, Girl Guides of Canada, swimming and was exposed to acting in grade 4. At only 16 years old, she decided to focus on her acting career and after auditioning for a documentary about the Vaughn Street Jail, made her first pay cheque of $1,500. She acted at the Manitoba Theatre Center and was part of the Back Stage Pass program which opened up more doors for her down the road. She was extremely proud to act in the 'Immigration Stories' play which was put on by Sarasvati Productions (I highly encourage listeners to check them out) and this idea is absolutely beautiful. Currently, she is working as an SLP and as an acting coach for youth at Expressions Film Studio in Winnipeg.

4 - Angelo Lamsen on Rapping, Dancing, The 90’s & More
The struggle is important, it puts a lot of things in perspective and eventually, you ask yourself, 'Why am I doing this?' and if the reason why isn't big enough, you move onto the next thing"- Angelo Lamsen
My guest today is a good friend of mine, Angelo Lamsen. Angelo was born in 1990 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and from an early age took interest in the arts. From being in, "Sisler's Most Wanted" urban dance group in high-school to musicals and busting out moves as a young kid during family gatherings, music and dance always interested him.
In this episode, Angelo walks us through his evolution of dance and provides bits of history around his favourite genres, "Popping, Locking, Tutting' and more. We also talk about money-saving tips regarding textbooks as a student, lessons learned from failing in business, various jobs we've had over the years, and what it's like to be a professional rapper.
Angelo, aka 'Joe Boy Rock' and his cousin Andrew, who also goes by, 'Cortex' partnered up in 2016 to become the rap duo known as Machina II (MA-KI-NA 2) where this past summer they had the opportunity to open up for Swollen Members during their 2018 Family Reunion tour. If you're a fan of the more old school hip-hop then you should enjoy this Winnipeg group making moves in the Canadian rap and hip-hop scene. I highly encourage listeners to check them out on Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, and more. Plus, check out their Facebook page for upcoming performances.
Fun Fact: Winnipeg is actually home to 56,400 Filipinos (2016), making them the third-largest Filipino community in Canada by total population, however the largest by percentage (8.7%).

3 - Mitchell Clinton on Lifting The Vale Behind Marketing For An NHL Franchise, Podcasting & More
3 - Mitchell Clinton on Lifting The Vale Behind Marketing For An NHL Franchise, Podcasting & More
"Even if you go to University and you have an idea of what you want to do, just keep your mind open because you never know what path could end up piquing your interest." - Mitchell Clinton
My guest today is my good friend Mitchell (Mitch) Clinton. As a Winnipeg Jets Reporter (and for those who might now know who the Winnipeg Jets are, they are a professional hockey team who play in the National Hockey League 'NHL') he has the unique opportunity to actually travel with the Winnipeg Jets across North America.
In this episode, we lift the vale on what goes on behind the scenes with regards to a lot of the various types of marketing that gets produced and distributed through multiple media platforms. We talk about the evolution of social media and the growing impact it has on large sports franchises as well as the amount of effort and teamwork that goes into producing a top-of-the-line end product that ends up getting distributed to millions of fans watching around North America (and the world).
So without going into too much detail on who Mitch is because you'll have to just listen to the episode for the full rich experience of that. Mitch has been around hockey constantly since around five or six years old and has been officiating (reffing) since 13. His first exposure to broadcasting was after university working at 730 CKDM where he got to read sports and newscasts among many other things. He also played midget AA hockey throughout most of high school so as you can probably gather by now, he's a hockey guy through and through.
Mitch has a degree in Journalism with a minor in Political Science which he attained from the University of Winnipeg and also a diploma in Journalism where he graduated from the Creative Communications program at Red River College. He joined the Winnipeg Jets in November of 2013 originally as their Web Content Coordinator and this position evolved quickly as did the rise of digital marketing and social media. Mitch is also one of the hosts of the Winnipeg Jets Podcast, "Ground Control".
Finally, I encourage listeners to stay to the end because when asked, "Where do you see the NHL heading in the future and things you might want to see corrected?" his answer intrigued me and I'm hoping will spark some curious thoughts.

2 - Scott MacKenzie, The Polymath on Science, Technology, Space And More
2 - Scott MacKenzie, The Polymath on Science, Technology, Space And More
“By the time I die, I want to have at least pushed and advanced human civilization forward even if it’s the smallest step, like a small cog in a wheel for a big company or something that gets them further to my dream job. I want to work in space but if I can’t do it in my lifetime I want to at least make it possible for the next generation or the generation after that.” – Scott MacKenzie (age 24)
My guest today is Scott MacKenzie. At the time of this recording, Scott is 24 years old (but you would not tell by the conversation we had and the topics we cover in this episode) and currently attending Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He will graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree in the summer of 2019 and unlike most graduate students who are eager to jump into their careers, Scott wants to take a slightly different (and in my opinion a more patient) approach. Instead, (and this might change) he wants to work at different types of jobs throughout the world (possibly Antarctica or North America) until he figures out what he wants to do.
Scott's voracious appetite for learning is contagious and he is one of those people that at the end of a conversation, not only did you learn several new things you didn't know before but you often end up asking yourself, "How does he know all of this?" I consider him to be a Polymath, someone who has wide-ranging knowledge or learning and not only does he have a passion for learning multiple topics of interest but he is able to dive deep into each one. His breadth AND depth of knowledge is impressive and this conversation was no exception to uncovering this fact.
In 2010, Scott was in Grade 10 and only 16 years old when he joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He was in The Royal Winnipeg Rifles infantry unit where he stayed for six and a half years. Skip forward to last summer in 2018 which was between year two and three of his schooling and he had the opportunity to work up north as a probe assistant in the Yukon and Nunavut on a drill rig looking for diamonds. He would swing a hammer 6,000+ times/day working 10-12 hr days trying to knock out these rods that were filled with permafrost while drilling. As you could imagine this took a toll on his body so Scott did something about it...
In this episode, we cover many topics including; The differences between college and university as well as working for small or large organizations; Space, specifically...why there are no structures on the moon, multiple ways how to terraform Mars, how he is interested in building civilizations away from earth and overall space expansion. We also dive into universal basic income and how purpose might differ for civilizations if we are living on more than one planet; Various forms of power in terms of energy sources; Motivation and purpose and much more.
Lastly, I am very fortunate to be able to call Scott my brother-in-law (love ya, buddy!)
Fun Fact: Scott has listened to 50 audiobooks in the past three to four years and when it comes to reading, he sets aside only 30-40 minutes per day.

1 - Mike MacIver on Bagpiping, Space, History, The 90’s, Shifting From Student To Teacher & More
1 - Mike MacIver on Bagpiping, Space, History, The 90’s, Shifting From Student To Teacher & More
“That was my problem, I was so afraid that if I took a single day off, I would lose some part of my ability.” - Mike MacIver
Welcome to episode 1 of the Dean Douglas Show. This is a special episode not only because it is the first in what I hope will be many episodes to come but also because of who my guest is. My good friend Mike MacIver. I've had the pleasure of knowing Mike for only a short amount of time but in that timeframe, we've had many interesting conversations and this one was no exception.
At the time of the recording, Mike is a Pipe Major for the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band. With over 25 years of experience, he's played the Bag Pipes all over the world including three continents (Canada, Australia, and Northern Ireland). He trained more than 3,200 hours in just 3 years leading up to when he played in Grade 1 for the Cullybackey Northern Ireland Pipe Band.
Mike and I explore many topics in this episode including:
Deep focus and how too much of anything can be a bad thing
Pros and cons of being a perfectionist
How much time and dedication it takes to achieve a high level of success…and then what to do when the fun goes away from your passion
Hunting
Running and the benefits of losing weight
What it’s like to make the shift from being a student to a teacher in bagpiping
How getting comfortable with our inabilities can be beneficial
Space
History
The 90’s
Mike shares some of his self-talk that helps put things into perspective, “At the end of the day, we’re quite literally just a rock flying around a gigantic nuclear reactor at 20,000 miles/hr...does it matter THAT much if you missed a single grace note in your march Mike?”
Fun Fact: The actual speed of the earth flying around the sun is 67,000 mi/hr and you'll have to listen towards the end of the episode to gain context into what the heck we're talking about.
