In Conversation With Sathnam Sanghera

In Conversation With Sathnam Sanghera

We sat down with award winning journalist, author, and broadcaster, Sathnam Sanghera to discuss his groundbreaking book, Empireland and his Channel 4 documentary, Empire State Of Mind exploring the legacy of Empire and imperialism in modern Britain. Since its release in February 2021, Empireland has received widespread critical acclaim, become a Sunday Times Bestseller, was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2021, and has become an integral part of Penguin Random House's Lit in Colour programme, where 15,000 copies were distributed to schools across the UK. As Empire is still not a mandatory part of the UK curriculum, we are left with a huge collective deficit when it comes to understanding multicultural Britain today. This lack of understanding is clearly shown in the racist and xenophobic abuse, trolling and hate that Sathnam has received since the release of his book and the documentary. Thankfully, we have also seen a shift in collective awareness regarding Empire, which is reflected in largely positive responses by the British public to Sathnam's work. It seems that there is a strong desire to get to know our collective roots, no matter how confronting that may be.

Join us as we discuss, imperialism, the legacy of Empire, Sathnam's own experiences with racism and abuse, artefacts in our museums, institutional racism, and more.

Colonialism & Cricket

Colonialism & Cricket

Many of us were appalled and saddened to hear Azeem Rafiq's devastating and damning statements to the DCMS Select Committee about his experience of racism in the Yorkshire Cricket team. Racism in sport is something which continues to play out in the UK, and is something which often has underlying roots in race and empire. In this episode, Natasha talks to Yogita Deogan about cricket's colonial roots, how it was a tool for asserting English dominance and instilling English values across the colonies of the Empire. Yogita talks about her own journey with cricket and how there are still huge inequalities regarding race and gender which need to be addressed. Yogita is a Diversity & Inclusion consultant for small to medium businesses with a particular focus on; gender inequality and decolonising cricket. These passions manifest in the voluntary work she does at Stanmore Cricket Club, and working with Diversify, a non-profit that runs social inclusion workshops in Primary and Secondary schools. Yogita is currently completing her Level 2 Cricket Coaching qualification, hoping to become a role model for more girls in cricket. In her spare time, she has her hands full with two young boys who just happen (slightly forced) to be as cricketing mad as her. This is Part One of two episodes. Stay tuned for Part Two, where Maya and Natasha discuss the violence of using the P Word as we reflect on Azeem's experience and our own.
