Design Cast

By Jason Reagin

Welcome to Design Cast, a podcast where I use my 25 years of educator experience and ask, “How do you design education?” Why is this important? Students all learn differently and need varied teaching methods to be successful. I chat with guests from all around the world from classroom teachers, to authors, consultants, and beyond.

Design Cast - Episode #101 - Christin Mohammed King - Trauma Informed Education

Design Cast - Episode #101 - Christin Mohammed King - Trauma Informed Education

For this episode of Design Cast, I had the pleasure of connecting with Christin Mohammed King.  Christin is a former colleague with so much value to add to any organization.  Her perspective on her recent experience in an all-boys school is incredibly insightful.  We discussed her experience working with boys in several different contexts and what she learned from them.

I do want to mention that we discuss a tragic event in her school and how it affected the boys.  This is a very sensitive topic, and if you are sensitive to hearing about trauma, I would suggest starting to listen to the episode at around the 10 or 12-minute mark.  While we are respectful and do not make light of this event, it is a sensitive topic.

It is my sincere hope that you will find value in our discussion and will share this with your networks and reach out to continue the conversation with me and other listeners!  Please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with Christin Mohammed King.

Design Cast - Episode #37 - Eric Burton - Classwork Zoom

On this episode of Design Cast I had the opportunity to speak with Eric Burton. Eric is the founder and creator of Classwork Zoom, which is a Chrome Extension that educators can use that utilizes the revision history of Google Docs and other items in your Google Classroom.  It allows the teacher to look at the time spent on an assignment by a student and includes analytics.  I have used it and it is an amazing tool to make your work as a teacher more efficient and effective.

Eric has made this product free to review a single student’s work at a time!  His website is http://classworkzoom.com and you can search for it in the Chrome Extension Store.  I highly recommend checking this out to anyone that uses Google Classroom.

Design Cast - Episode #26 - Jon Halligan - CP through VIE Education

On this episode of Design Cast I had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Jon Halligan.  He has held multiple roles from teacher to school leadership. Jon worked in multiple education institutions from primary to tertiary, state and private, from the UK to the UAE. For the last 5 years, Jon worked as the Head of Development & Recognition for the IBO in The Hague.  Jon has several startup projects that he is currently working on and we talk about those in this episode.

A lot of what we talked about dealt with the IB Career-related Programme or CP.  We have a lively discussion around the components of the CP and how schools can get started implementing the programme.  Jon also talks about his new start-up projects and they are VIE education which is the company that is setting up two different international schools in Switzerland which are going to be CP only schools!

I am currently the CP coordinator at my school and I see tremendous opportunities with ‘Personal Design Pathways’ for schools all over the world.  This conversation with Jon only confirmed my philosophy further!  I hope that you can see the possibilities for the design programs in your schools!!!

Design Cast - Episode #24 - Linda Keane - NEXT.cc

On this episode of Design Cast I had the pleasure of speaking with Linda Keane.  I connected with Linda after reading a few of her published articles on the subject of ‘Design Education’.  She is Professor of Architecture & Environmental Design At The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an eLearning Entrepreneur with the NEXT.cc. She promotes environmental education awareness within the context of a STEAM curricular framework.  This episode is really different as when we spoke, she shared her screen with me and had an entire presentation that illustrates the situations and concepts that she was discussing.  The video of this episode is available on my YouTube channel which is linked in the show notes.

If you would like to connect with Linda or check out the work that we talk about, head over to her website https://www.next.cc/ where the resources, tools, articles, and so on that you will hear about are located!  Again, the show notes for this episode will have links to many of the items that we discuss.

In this episode of Design Cast I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Suhail Khan.  Mr. Khan is a relatively new teacher to the profession, but has lots of experience beyond time in the classroom.  We talk about a range of topics, but what was most interesting about our chat was the time spent talking about how he has used Food Design as a service activity in Pune, India.  I am sure that you will all enjoy listening to it as much as did speaking with him about it.

Design Cast - Episode #21 - David Ardley - The “Value” of Design Education

On this episode of Design Cast, I chat with my long time colleague and friend, David Ardley.  Dave and I met in the summer of 2006 when he was the workshop leader of a DP Design Technology course that I participated in.  The training was amazing and we have kept in touch and collaborated ever since!  Our friendship is another reason why the ‘design’ education field globally is such an awesome opportunity to be active.

In this chat, Dave and I discuss a whole range of topics, but as the discussion moves on the theme of ‘value added education’ emerges.  This is a very valuable concept for school to consider and to take into account when planning for short and long term goals.  We would love to hear from you on this topic!  Please reach out in either the comment section of Anchor or through my website www.jasonreagin.ga

Dave shared several books with me during our chat.  They are:

Design Cast - Episode #10 - Perspectives of Curriculums Leaders (regarding Design programs)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Terry Linton on March 18, 2020.  He is the Director of Curriculum at Beanstalk Education Group in Beijing, China.  We discussed a whole host of things, but most importantly, Terry was able to lend insight into how senior leaders in a school plan for the implementation of teaching and learning in a school.  He also shared his perceptions of how outsiders might see a "design" program in a school.  He gives some suggestions to making your design program shine!

I hope that you enjoy listening as much as I had chatting with him!

There are a number of ways to get in touch with me. You can use the Google+ Community that many of you already are members of to leave me questions or suggestions.  You can email me at mr.reagin@gmail.com or call my Google voicemail +1.678.870.6676, I promise that I will not answer. It should go straight to voicemail. If you want to leave me a message that you want played on a future podcast that would be awesome! I have been using Voxer and really like its ease of use. My Voxer ID is wjreagin and you can leave a walkie-talkie style message. You can also follow me on Twitter @diskon4no.  Or just visit http://gg.gg/designcast to find other way to connect with me.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. If you want to send in questions or suggestions about Criterion C then please send them along and I will try to include the audio in future podcast episodes.  I want to thank Luc Crowther for his insights into teaching Criterion B and of course, Maryanna Geraghty for the excellent intro! It never gets old!
